I Roll To Attack The King: An Examination Of Far-Right Dissent And Ttrpgs In The Contemporary Age, Jenna C. Johnston
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Far-right ideologies have become more prevalent, both in the political sphere as well as fictional and fantasy spaces. This project analyzes the rise of far-right ideology within tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs) and offers potential reasons as to why this shift is occurring. Through the analysis of three Dungeons and Dragons (DnD) campaigns from TTRPG show Dimension 20, combined with psychological and sociological research, this work highlights the importance of actions within TTRPGs and their impact on our actual reality. Many may act within the confines of fantastical worlds such as TTRPGs in a way that aligns with far-right ideology because …

Effects Of Added Vestibular Noise On Blindfolded Locomotor Veering, Russell J. Carmichael, Allison Sam, Philip K. Schot Phd
International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities
BACKGROUND: Nearly every fundamentally healthy human, regardless of fitness, age, or gender is incapable of walking in a perfectly straight line when visual information is removed. This is known as veering. Many different potential causes have been examined, but the most persuasive explanation is that without visual input, sensory interference (or noise) accumulates and causes random motor output errors. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine veering behavior during blindfolded walking when added vestibular noise (vibration) was applied to the skull at select locations. METHODS: A handheld massager attached at the top of the head or over one …

Crystal Structures And Low-Affinity Complex Formation Of Halogenase Ctcp And Fad Reductase Ctcq From The Chlortetracycline Biosynthetic Pathway, Caixia Hou, Sylvie Garneau-Tsodikova, Oleg V. Tsodikov
Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications
Enzymatic halogenation in natural products has been intensely investigated due to its potential utility as a tool to improve pharmacological and pharmaceutical properties of drug leads. Chlortetracycline (CTC), the first tetracycline (TC) antibiotic discovered nearly eight decades ago, contains a chlorine group. This chlorine is installed enzymatically by the flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD)-dependent halogenase CtcP. CtcP and the FAD reductase CtcQ, which is also encoded in the CTC biosynthetic gene cluster, function as a two-component system. Structural information on CtcP and CtcQ has been lacking. In this study, we determined crystal structures of CtcP from Kitasatospora aureofaciens in a complex …

The Statewide Coastal Restoration Guide (SCRG) is a comprehensive planning resource developed through a collaboration between Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP), University of Central Florida (UCF), and Resource Environmental Solutions (RES) to strengthen and unify shoreline restoration efforts across Florida. With over 4,500 miles of estuarine shoreline, Florida’s coasts are vital to the state’s ecological health, economic prosperity, and community resilience. However, they face increasing threats from sea level rise, stronger storms, erosion, habitat degradation, and development. The SCRG responds to these challenges by providing science-based, non-regulatory guidance for implementing resilient, nature-based restoration strategies that protect both ecosystems and …
Patient Violence In The Emergency Department : The Potential Role Of Endogenous And Exogenous Factors, Laura Baker Graham
Patient Violence In The Emergency Department : The Potential Role Of Endogenous And Exogenous Factors, Laura Baker Graham
Dissertations
Patient Violence against nurses is a widespread problem resulting in both emotional and physical injury to the nurse. Emergency Department (ED) nurses are at an increased risk due to the volume and variety of the patients they serve, and the general chaotic environment of the ED; however, little research has been done examining the characteristics of patients who offend and the physical environment of the ED where the event happened. The aim of this three-article dissertation was to develop a more thorough understanding of the personal attributes (endogenous) of the individual patient and external (exogenous) factors of the emergency department …

In recent years, social prescribing—particularly green prescribing and nature prescriptions—has rapidly gained popularity as a holistic approach to improving health and well-being by connecting individuals with nature-based activities and community support. Due to the unique qualities of protected and conserved areas, they provide irreplaceable benefits to humans. This has prompted many to quickly identify, define, and measure their positive impacts on human health and well-being. As exciting as this potential may be, it is imperative to consider that health is the terrain of another sector. Just as ecosystem management may be unfamiliar to health professionals, health is a field that …

Tourism, defined widely to include all types and forms of permitted outdoor recreation and visitation to Protected and Conserved Areas (PCAs) including by local, national and international visitors, plays a complex and often contested role in PCAs. While a significant share of global tourism depends on the ecological richness of these areas, their conservation value does not automatically translate into sustainable financial returns. Nonetheless, when effectively managed, tourism in PCAs can generate conservation funding, support local livelihoods, and provide infrastructure investment, particularly in under-resourced landscapes (Leung et al., 2018). Beyond economics, public use of PCAs contributes to building social license …

Spinosad is a widely used insecticide effective in controlling Aedes aegypti populations, but the molecular mechanisms underlying resistance remain poorly understood. This study explores the role of a serine protease, AeaSP (AAEL002624), in the potential detoxification ability of spinosad. Our results showed the crude protein of Ae. aegypti degraded approximately 48% of spinosad in vitro within 1 h; based on our previous research, AeaSP was believed to be potentially involved in the degradation of spinosad. Subsequently, AeaSP was recombinantly expressed in vitro, and its enzymatic activity was tested using BAEE as a substrate, with a Michaelis constant (KM) of 0.88 …

Does Performance Change Budgets? Punctuated Equilibrium, Performance, And The Budget For Juvenile Justice In An American State, Elaine Yi Lu, Robert Hines, Katherine Willoughby
Publications and Research
How performance informs budgeting and budgets is contentious and unclear. Applying punctuated equilibrium theory, this research seeks to understand if performance information once placed on the media and macropolitical agendas can lead to long term budgetary shifts. This research highlights how the accumulation of performance information punctuated the funding scheme and created a new equilibrium over time.
This research uses mixed methods to study the impact of performance on Florida’s (USA) Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) over a 20-year period. First, we conduct a media review of 400 randomly sampled newspaper articles to characterize the media discourse around the DJJ …
A Multifactorial Approach To Improve Piglet Health And Survival, Aryeri Stephanie Bardales Castellanos
A Multifactorial Approach To Improve Piglet Health And Survival, Aryeri Stephanie Bardales Castellanos
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Pre-weaning mortality (PWM) remains a significant challenge in modern swine production systems, particularly in the context of hyper prolific sows. Although genetic selection has successfully increased litter sizes, these advancements have also intensified physiological stress on sows and increased the vulnerability of neonatal piglets. The majority of PWM occurs within the first 72 hours postpartum, with crushing by the sow as the leading cause of death. Additionally, iron deficiency anemia remains one of the most widespread nutritional disorders in piglets, further compromising survival, immune function, and growth. This thesis adopts a multifactorial approach to evaluate two management interventions aimed at …

Integrating Invasion Risk And Habitat Suitability To Guide Invasive Species Management In Wetlands, Lakes, And Rivers, Brenden M. Elwer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Invasive species disrupt ecosystems by altering habitats, competing with native species, and disrupting food webs. The northern Great Plains is an ecologically important region with many wetlands, lakes, and rivers that are under threat from two invasive species, Bighead (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) and Silver Carp (H. molitrix; bigheaded carp). These large planktivores change the abundance and composition of phytoplankton and zooplankton communities which alters prey for native mussels, fishes, and, potentially, waterfowl. Bigheaded carps have invaded a portion of the Northern Great Plains, and preventing further spread is a primary management goal. My work assists these efforts by providing tools to …

Assessment And Management Of Dectes Stem Borer, Dectes Texanus Leconte, In South Dakota Soybeans, Zachary Loomis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Dectes stem borer (Dectes texanus LeConte, Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) has emerged as an increasingly significant pest of soybean (Glycine max) in South Dakota. Although historically considered a minor concern, rising populations of this insect have led to significant preharvest lodging and subsequent yield loss in affected fields. The Dectes stem borer's larval feeding within the soybean stem interferes with nutrient flow, and as the season progresses, this internal feeding weakens stem integrity, amplifying lodging risks and causing considerable challenges for farmers and researchers. Since 2017, both the number and severity of Dectes stem borer infestations have been on the rise …

Isolation, Characterization & Identification Of Cultivable Field Pea Seed Bacteria In South Dakota, Diana Wairimu Njuguna
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Pea (Pisum sativum L.) is a legume, cultivated on over 25 million acres, particularly in Canada, France, China, Russia, and the United States. Its seeds harbor microbiota including bacteria and fungi, either on the surface (epiphytes) or within seed tissues (endophytes). These microbes can be pathogenic or beneficial, enhancing seedling metabolism and protection from environmental stresses. Characterizing beneficial seed microbiota enables development of microbial inoculants for seed treatment. Seeds from 12 varieties (green or yellow seed coats) were harvested from Sturgis and Dakota Lakes in 2021. Epiphytes were extracted using sonication followed by grinding the seeds to obtain endophytes. Isolates …

The primary depolymerization processes of hydrolytic lignin (HL) are examined, focusing on the formation of intermediate oligomers and bulky environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs). Fragmentation of HL was conducted in a continuous atomization (CA) fast flow reactor, where HL, dissolved in a 9:1 acetone-to-water solution, was dispersed. Results indicated that HL fragmentation occurs significantly faster in the gas phase in comparison to the literature rate of formation of major biofuel-phenolic compounds. In other words, the formation of phenolic compounds occurs at much lower rate constants being the limiting stage for lignin depolymerization. The critical role of surface associated reactions for …

Variation in gene tree estimates is widely observed in empirical phylogenomic data and is often assumed to be the result of biological processes. However, a recent study using tetrapod mitochondrial genomes to control for biological sources of variation due to their haploid, uniparentally inherited, and non-recombining nature found that levels of discordance among mitochondrial gene trees were comparable to those found in studies that assume only biological sources of variation. Additionally, they found that several of the models of sequence evolution chosen to infer gene trees were doing an inadequate job of fitting the sequence data. These results indicated that …
