Traumatic brain injury (TBI)-related growth hormone deficiency is often undertreated, despite documented physical, metabolic, and neuropsychiatric effects. Insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), with neuroreceptors located in brain regions responsible for learning, memory, and mood, regulates cerebral blood flow, neurogenesis, and neuroplasticity. The aim of this study was to determine associations between IGF-1 levels and post-TBI symptom severity, anxiety, and depression. This retrospective observational study at an Academic Brain Injury Center included participants evaluated 3-12 months post-TBI with available IGF-1 values and complete Rivermead Post-Concussion Symptoms Questionnaire (RPQ-13), Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) responses. Patients under 18 or …
Ex Vivo Single-Molecule Analysis Of Ryanodine Receptor 2 Assembly In Cardiac And Neuronal Tissue, Qianye Yin, Christopher I. Richards
Ex Vivo Single-Molecule Analysis Of Ryanodine Receptor 2 Assembly In Cardiac And Neuronal Tissue, Qianye Yin, Christopher I. Richards
Chemistry Faculty Publications
Understanding receptor assembly is critical for elucidating the mechanisms underlying their function and regulation in physiological processes. While traditional in vitro single-molecule studies rely on isolating proteins from heterologous expression systems, they often fail to capture the in vivo physiological complexity involved in the organization and assembly of cell surface proteins. This protocol employs Total Internal Reflection Fluorescence Microscopy (TIRFM) to study GFP-tagged Ryanodine Receptor 2 (RyR2) molecules encapsulated within nanoscale vesicles. These vesicles, generated from organs rapidly extracted from the animal, effectively provide a snapshot of the receptor's assembly state at the time of extraction, enabling detailed analysis of …
Positive Youth Development For Youth Living In Structurally Diverse Families, Jonathon J. Beckmeyer
Positive Youth Development For Youth Living In Structurally Diverse Families, Jonathon J. Beckmeyer
Faculty Publications - Family and Consumer Sciences
Research on family structure diversity and youth well-being has largely aligned with deficit orientations, emphasizing that living in structurally diverse families is a potential risk-factor for youth well-being and development. In this article, I advocate for increased strengths-based scholarship on youth living in structurally diverse families by centering this research with positive youth development (PYD) frameworks. Broadly, PYD frameworks orient scholars toward viewing youth holistically, attending to positive indicators of well-being as well as how youth capacities and experiences intersect with family and community resources to promote flourishing and thriving. Approaching family structure diversity and youth well-being from a PYD …

Why Academic Law Librarians Quit: Results Of The Law Librarian Exit Survey, Laura J. Ax-Fultz
Faculty Scholarly Works
The pandemic exposed the struggles of workers everywhere. The complexity of handling family, work, illness, and a host of other issues led many to reconsider their employment. The phrase “The Great Resignation” summed up the zeitgeist of the early pandemic. Concurrently, open positions for academic law librarians were increasing. I sought to unravel the apparent surge in open positions by surveying academic law librarians to discover why they resigned from their positions or considered leaving them during the period of January 2020 through June 2023.
These findings were evaluated within the context of a high volume of job postings in …

Polycaprolactone—Based Block Copolymers For Nanopatterning Oxide Materials Via Sequential Infiltration Synthesis, Sudarshana Patra, Carter Herbert, Lane Nichols, Prachi Sarwara, Uttam Manna, Mahua Biswas
Faculty publications – Physics
Sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS) has emerged as a powerful technique to integrate inorganic materials into polymeric templates for fabricating functional hybrid and inorganic-only nanostructures. While several polymers, including self-assembled block copolymers (BCPs), have been widely used as templates for inorganic and hybrid oxide nanostructures, biocompatible polymers such as polycaprolactone (PCL) have not been explored for nanopatterning. In this work, we investigate SIS in polystyrene-block-polycaprolactone (PS-b-PCL) BCPs to demonstrate the feasibility of PCL as a guiding polymer for selective infiltration of Al2O3. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed the strong interaction of TMA–H2O precursors with …

This study seeks to understand the effects on researchers’ work at a large research university in the wake of the university library’s shift from a near-comprehensive journals package with a single, large publisher to a selective list of individual journal subscriptions. Analyzing historical journal usage, along with turnaway and interlibrary loan trends from the years following the changes, the authors made use of structured interviews with local researchers to bring context and meaning to the quantitative data. The interviews highlighted researchers’ strategies for gaining access to literature in their fields to which the library does not subscribe, and revealed assumptions …

Standardization And Accuracy Of Race And Ethnicity Data: Equity Implications For Medical Ai, Alexandra Tsalidis, Lakshmi Bharadwaj, Francis X. Shen
Articles
The rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into healthcare has raised many concerns about race bias in AI models. Yet, overlooked in this dialogue is the lack of quality control for the accuracy of patient race and ethnicity (r/e) data in electronic health records (EHR). This article critically examines the factors driving inaccurate and unrepresentative r/e datasets. These include conceptual uncertainties about how to categorize races and ethnicity, shortcomings in data collection practices, EHR standards, and the misclassification of patients’ race or ethnicity. To address these challenges, we propose a two-pronged action plan. First, we present a set of best …

Theses and Dissertations--Community & Leadership Development
This study evaluated the presence and depth of experiential learning within undergraduate course syllabi from the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food, and Environment. Through a content analysis of 41 syllabi across five academic majors, the study examined how course objectives and assignments aligned with Kolb’s Experiential learning cycle (1984), Webb’s depth of knowledge (1997), and Joplin’s Mini to maxi Scale (1981). A structured coding instrument was used to quantify the frequency of learning elements across these three frameworks. The findings revealed that Abstract Conceptualization and Reflective Observation were the most common stages in both objectives and assignments, while Concrete Experience …
True Law As Genre: Narrative Nonfiction And The Law, Jorge L. Contreras
True Law As Genre: Narrative Nonfiction And The Law, Jorge L. Contreras
Texas A&M Journal of Property Law
The Genome Defense, which offers a book-length narrative nonfiction account of the civil litigation that led to the elimination of patents on human genes in the United States, is a member of a distinct literary subgenre that I term True Law. Like the older and better-known True Crime genre, True Law narratives blend the conventions of journalism and novelistic writing to describe complex legal disputes in a manner that is engaging and accessible to the general public. True Law accounts, which have increased in number and popularity since the publication of Jonathan Harr’s A Civil Action in 1995, serve …
Protecting Older Adults Who Are Incarcerated: Does The 8th Amendment Work?, Jalayne J. Arias
Protecting Older Adults Who Are Incarcerated: Does The 8th Amendment Work?, Jalayne J. Arias
Health Matrix: The Journal of Law-Medicine
Older adults in prison and within other carceral systems (i.e. jails, parole) are uniquely at risk for elder mistreatment. Emerging research has begun to consider the experiences of older adults within carceral settings, including aging in prison, chronic conditions and medical care, compassionate release, and end-of-life care. This research exposes evidence that prisons and other carceral settings lack resources and services for older adults. Given increased vulnerability and a lack of protective resources, older adults experiencing incarceration may experience disproportional rates and consequences of elder mistreatment. A public health approach to develop tools and resources that would prevent, detect, and …
Body Size Distributions Of Riverine Freshwater Plankton Communities, Staci Ann Reynolds
Body Size Distributions Of Riverine Freshwater Plankton Communities, Staci Ann Reynolds
Dissertations and Theses
The individual size distribution (ISD) is an individual based model that estimates the relative abundance of individual body sizes in a community. ISD’s slope or lambda (λ) gives insight into the communities’ food web and energy transfer. Climate change is expected to shift mean body sizes and λ as it increases individuals’ energy demands. Alterations in food webs and spatial distribution throughout the middle Missouri River basin may also have an impact on these communities λ. In a mesocosm experiment and field study, planktonic communities were sampled and had body sizes measured. Generalized linear mixed models were fit to calculate …

The Unintended Consequences Of Normalization: Unmonitored Mental Health Discourse Among Youth And Suicide Risk, Farley Morris
Social Work Theses - Archive
Suicide has become an increasingly common cause of death among U.S. children ages 10–14. In 2001, suicide accounted for 8% of deaths in this age group; by 2010 the proportion rose to 12%, and by 2020 it reached 22% (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2020). Although factors such as adverse childhood experiences (Felitti et al., 1998; Jones et al., 2024), psychache (Shneidman, 1998), burdensomeness (Joiner, 2005; O’Connor, 2011), and hopelessness (Bat Tonkus et al., 2022; Qiu et al., 2017) are associated with suicide, these elements alone do not explain the significant rise in suicide deaths over the past …

Social Work Dissertations - Archive
Unintended pregnancies have been linked to adverse outcomes such as pre-term births and low infant birthweight (Harron et al., 2020), psychological distress(Abbasi et al., 2013; Barton et al., 2017; Gauthreaux et al., 2017; Mercier et al., 2013), relationship strain (Barton et al., 2017; Moseson et al., 2019), intimate partner violence (IPV) and reproductive coercion (K. T. Grace & Anderson, 2018), and economic strain from unanticipated medical costs despite insurance coverage (Trussell, 2007). Unintended pregnancy outcomes offer crucial insights into the complexities of women's reproductive desires and intentions (CDC, 2023; Rossen et al., 2023). These outcomes inform public health interventions to …
Quantifying And Understanding The Role Of Bias In Astrophysical Data, Joshua A. Osborne
Quantifying And Understanding The Role Of Bias In Astrophysical Data, Joshua A. Osborne
Physics Dissertations - Archive
Astrophysical studies are limited to the data provided. Data which is inherently prone to a range of biases such as: instrumental, selection, and methodological bias. Quantifying these biases and understanding their origin is critical to ensuring that the results we infer are representative of the physical world.
This is true even when attempting to study high-redshift phenomena, such as Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs). Due to their immense brightness at high redshifts, GRBs serve as a strong candidate for standard candles in high redshift space. Their use as a standard candle, however, requires a precise understanding of observational biases that affect …

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
Biomedical relation extraction is a key task in information extraction supporting downstream applications such as knowledge discovery, information retrieval, and question answering. As such, improvements in relation extraction (RE) are expected to have major implications for other information needs in biomedicine. In this dis- sertation, we pursue biomedical relation extraction in several advanced settings with recent advances in large language models (LLMs) and retrieval augmented generation (RAG). First, we address an important slot filling task on social media that arose during the Covid-19 pandemic, using the idea of continuous prompts with encoder models. Next, we handle a tricky dynamic n-ary …
Snake Venoms As Models For Understanding The Origins And Evolution Of Gene Regulatory Networks, Siddharth S. Gopalan
Snake Venoms As Models For Understanding The Origins And Evolution Of Gene Regulatory Networks, Siddharth S. Gopalan
Biology Dissertations - Archive
Understanding the relationship between genotype and phenotype is a fundamental goal of biology. However, the vastly complex nature of eukaryotic gene regulation can make deriving precise relationships between genotype and phenotype challenging. The gene regulatory architecture of snake venom systems provide an opportunity to study this problem in a phenotypic system with immense variation in phenotypes and the underlying genetics. Using a set of integrated functional genomic approaches with snake venoms as a central model, in this dissertation, I provide several examples of the regulatory mechanisms by which diversity in phenotypes arises. Specifically, I identify how gene expression heterogeneity between …

Genetic Analysis Of Methionine Restriction-Associated Mitochondrial Unfolded Protein Response Signaling., Josh D. Dodge
Biology Dissertations - Archive
The lifespan of an organism is dictated by various genetic and environmental factors. One such determinant is the health of mitochondria which are organelles that mediate various critical cell functions including a significant role in generating the vast supply of cellular energy. Indeed, the gradual decline of mitochondrial function is believed to be a hallmark and possible cause of aging. Paradoxically, mild mitochondrial dysfunction early in life extends lifespan in various model organisms. Cells use diverse approaches to promote mitochondrial homeostasis, including the transcriptional reprogramming of cells by mitochondrial unfolded protein response (UPRmt) to mitigate mitochondrial stress. Consistently, UPRmt activation …

Innovative Approaches To Combat Triple-Negative Breast Cancer: Integrating Metabolic Modulation, Advanced Therapies, And Lifestyle Interventions, Ngozi Damilola Chidumebi Akingbesote
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), an aggressive and often lethal subtype of breast cancer, continues to challenge researchers and clinicians due to its poor prognosis and limited therapeutic options. This thesis explores novel therapeutic strategies that integrate metabolic modulation, advanced radionuclide therapies, and lifestyle interventions to combat TNBC effectively. The first component investigates metabolic scaling and its implications for cancer metabolism. Gene and protein expression analyses across species reveal that metabolic processes, including oxidative metabolism and detoxification, scale inversely with body mass. This foundational insight underscores the importance of systemic metabolic regulation in understanding cancer progression. In the realm of cancer …
Applicability Of Multilateral Environmental Agreements During International Armed Conflicts, Beatrice L. Hamilton
Applicability Of Multilateral Environmental Agreements During International Armed Conflicts, Beatrice L. Hamilton
Loyola University Chicago Law Journal
Armed conflicts increasingly contribute to environmental damage and climate change, yet, as proven by recent and ongoing conflicts, the legal framework for the protection of the environment under the law of armed conflict (LOAC) fails to effectively mitigate these damages. With rising temperatures, already diminishing resources, the counter-acting of mitigation and adaptation efforts due to warfare and geo-political tensions on the rise, there is a strong case for considering the potential for enhancing the protection of the environment during armed conflicts.
This Article examines the terms of applicability of multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) during international armed conflicts. The article draws …
