Where do children come from? The source of childhood—either nature or political will—is a matter not merely of chronology but of authority. Whoever makes children gets to define childhood. Legal childhood is one type of legal personhood. Legal personhood matters because legal persons bear legal rights and duties. Rights and duties direct how we act toward each other. Thus, our ideas about how persons come to be, who counts as a person, and how persons are defined in law determine in large part how we act toward persons, both other persons and ourselves.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States disproportionately affecting rural communities. This dissertation study investigates the involvement of rural communities in lifestyle behaviors associated with increased risk of cancers, the impact of socioeconomic factors, and what influences their behavior and the impact of political party affiliation. The study was conducted using a mixed-method quantitative data analysis enhanced by qualitative interviews. It began with an extensive literature review to identify existing research, and evidence gaps on the topic. The use of nuclear weapons presents an unparalleled risk of escalation, a reality that has become increasingly pressing due to recent geopolitical developments, particularly Russia’s revised nuclear doctrine and its ongoing conflict with Ukraine. While the legal frameworks governing armed conflict, particularly International Humanitarian Law (IHL), do not traditionally require an analysis of escalation risk before an attack, this article argues that the extreme and immediate consequences of nuclear escalation necessitate its inclusion within the precautionary measures framework.

Antibiotic resistance (AR) has become a critical global health crisis, threatening the efficacy of antibiotics and increasing healthcare costs, morbidity, and mortality. The One Health approach, which emphasizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, is increasingly recognized as an essential framework for addressing the complex drivers of AR. This review explores the mechanisms of resistance, such as genetic mutations, horizontal gene transfer, and biofilm formation, along with contributing factors such as the overuse of antibiotics in healthcare and agriculture. [Introduction] Fibrosis is one of the pathological conditions underlying the progression of numerous chronic diseases, and it contributes substantially to morbidity and mortality worldwide. Increasing amounts of evidence indicate that epigenetic mechanisms—including DNA methylation, histone modifications, RNA modifications, and non-coding RNAs—play pivotal roles in epithelial cell injury and maladaptive tissue repair, inflammatory cell and fibroblast activation, and extracellular matrix remodeling and accumulation. Compared to genetic alterations, epigenetic changes are relatively reversible, positioning them as promising therapeutic targets. This thesis explores the effects of inquiry-based learning on three key student outcomes: critical thinking, engagement, and academic achievement. Drawing on studies from which the methodology was applied across K-12 and higher education settings, this review summarizes empirical findings to identify strengths and limitations. Inquiry-based learning is frequently associated with improvements in student participation and reasoning skills due to its emphasis on providing opportunities for hands-on investigative processes and collaborative work; however, the magnitude of these effects varies based on the type of inquiry-based learning used and the level of instructional support. This literature review examines how digital technology influences student attention, engagement, and self-regulated learning in 1:1 classrooms. Across 30 studies, technology is deemed neither inherently harmful nor helpful; rather, its impact depends on how technology is used and the instructional design the educator employs. Digital distractions, such as smartphones, multitasking, and peer interruptions decrease focus and negatively impact academic performance. However, strategies such as goal setting, structured note-taking, reflection, and feedback loops help students develop greater self-regulation and manage their engagement. This literature review and application thesis examines the concerns related to nature-deficit, specifically screen usage, student disengagement, and mental health issues. This review examines how nature-based educational approaches can enhance mental health, improve academic performance, and connect to various topics, including Indigenous culture and interdisciplinary art approaches that integrate multiple subjects. The lesson plans provided in the application are rooted in culturally relevant, nature-based approaches for students in grades K-12, including an Indigenous-inspired lesson for elementary, middle, and high school art.

Image analysis can be useful for assessing crop health and predicting yield. Instead of expensive equipment, smartphones are considered an accessible and low-cost alternative. The objectives of this study were to evaluate whether fresh weight in green and red lettuce could be predicted by leaf color (intensity of green color measured by RGB) under different fertilizer treatments using RGB imaging from two widely used smartphone models (Samsung Galaxy and Apple iPhone). The two smartphones showed similar longitudinal patterns of RGB data (the intensity and dark green proportion), but the absolute difference in the RGB data was significantly different. Pilotage is a primary service offered by ports, ensuring the safe passage of entering and exiting vessels. This study applied motion prediction analysis to large vessels navigating the constrained waterways of Kaohsiung Port’s second harbor. To address the needs of pilots and port operators, a simplified planar motion equation was developed that incorporated speed over ground and rate of turn (ROT) as primary variables. The model relied on inputs of limited navigational data, enabling pilots to predict changes in heading and position over time and determine the conditions for safe harbor entry. For more than two decades, policymakers have been told that pharmaceutical innovators companies engage in a practice that is called, disparagingly, “evergreening.” The basic idea is that companies introduce new versions of their drugs that have later expiring patents or regulatory exclusivity. This way, the claim goes, the companies effectively block generic entry for years or decades longer than Congress intended and than is socially desirable. Initially these claims were supported by poorly researched anecdotes. In the last decade, some scholars and advocacy organizations have published papers that purport to provide empirical support for the “evergreening” accusation. But these empirical …

This dissertation presents research across three publishable manuscripts that investigate why structural and systemic racism persist among patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) seeking pain management, and how interprofessional collaboration and education can help reduce disparities through shared learning, accountability, and standardized care (Chapters Two through Four). A scoping review identifies current interventions and strategies aimed at sharing the pain experiences and feelings of being unheard by SCD patients (Chapter Two). Breastfeeding provides significant health benefits for both parent and child, yet many parents discontinue earlier than recommended. While childhood sexual abuse has been associated with breastfeeding difficulties, limited research has examined the broader effects of other forms of childhood maltreatments on breastfeeding outcomes. This cross-sectional study examined the relationship between a history of childhood trauma and breastfeeding outcomes, with social support explored as a potential moderator. Participants (n = 194) were birthing parents of children under the age of five, recruited from online parenting communities. The mutation in Gsα-coding GNAS exons, popular as gsp oncogene, is the most frequent mutation across all heterotrimeric G proteins involved in oncogenesis. GNAS R201, the most frequently mutated, followed by Q227, are found predominantly across various neoplasms and cancers such as IPMN, pituitary, thyroid, appendiceal, colorectal, etc. This review emphasizes the pivotal significance of the gsp oncogene and its ramifications underpinning the sustained addiction to GNAS mutation.
