The purpose of this research is to determine the role of the Surfeit-4 gene, or Surf-4 locus protein, during Drosophila melanogaster development. Surf-4 was identified in the Srivastava lab in a biochemical screen for proteins that associate with the basement membrane (BM): a structure needed and required for normal development and its degradation is a hallmark of tumor metastasis. Surf-4 has been predicted to function within intracellular compartments and is known to be expressed in many parts of the developing fly. High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2025

When we were kids, we were always told to leave someplace better than you found it - maybe it was your room, campsite, or local park. Now, we have taken this lesson as a call to action to restore the Indian River Lagoon. Over the semester, we created and hosted an Oyster City Safari program for elementary schoolers as a part of UCF’s STEM Day, educating 50 students about oyster reefs and their importance for conservation. We also supported faculty and graduate students in their active research projects, and worked hands-on with local restoration leaders in their ongoing conservation work. …

The project titled “Home-Based Exercise Program for Recovery After TAVR” focuses on improving recovery outcomes in patients with heart valve disease, specifically those who have undergone Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR). The purpose of the project was to evaluate the effectiveness of a home-based exercise program, with and without Cognitive Behavioral Intervention (CBI), compared to an educational control program. The study aimed to enhance patients’ physical functionality, quality of life, and recovery time after TAVR—an important consideration for older adults who may not be eligible for open-heart surgery.

Ecological restoration is essential for improving the ecological integrity of degraded ecosystems to enhance ecosystem services and biodiversity. In this study, we assessed the effectiveness of wetland restoration on retired cranberry farms by analyzing vegetation recovery and surface-water dynamics using the enhanced vegetation index (EVI) and normalized difference water index (NDWI) derived from Sentinel-2 satellite imagery. To quantify temporal dynamics of both vegetation recovery and surface-water cover, we identified the spectral distinctions among restored wetland plant communities. Our results indicated the emergence of distinct plant communities upon restoration. Restored wetlands in general showed significant and progressive vegetation recovery and expanding …

We developed a 3D printed model to better understand the structure and function of the molecule, Pikachurin. Pikachurin is an extracellular matrix scaffold protein that bridges photoreceptor and ON-bipolar cell synapses by linking the presynaptic dystroglycan complex to the postsynaptic receptor GPR179, ensuring precise synaptic alignment essential for normal vision. Pikachurin was discovered in 2008 by a Japanese team at the Osaka Bioscience Institute through a microarray analysis of mouse retinas and was named after the Pokémon, Pikachu, because of its “lightning-fast” function in vision transmission. Introduction: The escalating cost of journals, loss of access to research results, and mandates by funding agencies favor Open Access (OA). The suggestion that OA publications are cited more than those behind paywalls should appeal to faculty where citations are critical for promotion and tenure. Further, the option to publish Green OA without cost would be advantageous to faculty who lack financial support for OA publications.

Methods: We used data from Scopus to analyze field weighted citation counts (FWCI) for OA publications over 20 years in terms of OA type, document type, subject area, and subject normalized impact factor.

The purpose of this study is to address a gap in the literature regarding the relationship between theatre and empathy; specifically, investigating how varying levels of participation in theatre may influence cognitive and affective empathy. This study examines whether empathy can be fostered through mere observation of theatre or whether active participation yields greater effects. Twenty-eight undergraduate participants, all of whom attend a small liberal arts college in the United States, either participated in three theatre games or observed their fellow participants playing them. Effective and safe antibiotics active against pathogenic mycobacterial species are needed. Iron is an essential element for bacterial survival. Ga(NO₃)₃ (GN) and Ga protoporphyrin (GP) as iron mimetics have each been shown to inhibit the iron metabolism and growth of various mycobacterial species. In this study, the dual cyclodextrin nanoparticle (CDGPGN) is prepared that carries GP and GN using a sonication homogenization technique to increase the efficacy of the combination therapy. CDGPGN shows a long-acting antimicrobial activity against Mycobacteroides abscessus residing in monocyte-derived macrophages (MDM). Over the past few decades, Plato’s Phaedrus has become an important text for scholars interested in tracing new materialist approaches to the history of rhetoric and writing. Drawing on rhetoric and plant studies scholarship, this essay contributes to this conversation by arguing that trees disclose an important layer of irony in the dialogue, producing a deep, if not ambivalent, unity that brings together rhetoric, writing, and discourse. Through a study of trees in the dialogue, this essay demonstrates how the Phaedrus offers rich connections between spatial, nonhuman, and ecological dimensions of writing, rhetoric, and discourse.

The work described in this thesis has generated new oligoviologen structures designed to facilitate the formation of supermolecules that incorporate photoactive and redox-active groups. These viologens have several potential uses; for example, the 4+ oligoviologen (viologen 5) exhibits solvatochromic properties in various polar protic and polar aprotic solvents, indicating suitability for use as a solvatochromic dye. The syntheses of bis(4,4’-bipyridine)ortho-xylene, bis(4,4’-bipyridine)meta-xylene, and bis(4,4’-bipyridine)para-xylene were demonstrated through ¹H NMR characterization and confirmed through literature. Bis(4,4’-bipyridine)ortho-xylene, bis(4,4’-bipyridine)meta-xylene, and bis(4,4’-bipyridine)para-xylene were produced in 68%, 72%, and 54% yields, respectively. 4,4’-Bipyridine-1-[4-(bromomethyl)phenylmethyl]-1’- …

Yet, a mutation of this classic game involving physical agents in a two-dimensional discrete environment remains largely unexplored. This paper will analyze an important study performed by Chung et al. (2018) regarding transforming growth factor-beta (TGFbeta), which plays an important role in various cellular processes. Paradoxically, TGF-beta plays a different role in the development of cancer at various points.
