Pre-Vent Cpap Belly Device, Brandon D. Nguyen, Cameron A. Zipper, Eugina Lee
Biomedical Engineering
The CPAP Belly Pre-Vent device was developed to prevent stomach distension caused by Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) treatment in premature neonatal patients under 2 kg. CPAP therapy provides critical respiratory support but can lead to air accumulation in the stomach due to esophageal insufficiency. This accumulation, known as CPAP belly, can interfere with lung expansion and feeding efficiency. The goal of this project was to design, develop, and test a device that passively vents excess air from the stomach to alleviate these issues.
The main phases of the project consist of identifying customer requirements and translating them to engineering …

Despite decades of interventions aiming to transform the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce to be more inclusive and diverse, little progress has been made in creating long-lasting, sustainable change. For a long period of time, the STEM workforce has been described as a leaky pipeline. While there has been some utility to thinking about the STEM workforce in this way, in this article, we discuss how characterizing the STEM workforce as a leaky pipeline can impede the design of innovative interventions that contribute to sustainable change toward a more inclusive scientific enterprise. As an alternative, we join others …

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
In this article, we discuss the fermatean neutrosophic graph of Wiener index, which is an essential topological index formed according to geodesical distance of vertices. The Wiener index is an important factor to describe the structure of a graph and we de ned it in relation to fermatean neutrosophic graphs and computed it for some speci c fermatean neutrosophic graph structures including complete fermatean neutrosophic graphs, cycles and trees. Subsequently, the Wiener index is compared with the connectivity index, a core-degree based parameter, using a sequence of theorems. As an application the study responds to the di culties in election …

Contraceptive Hormone Influences On The Role Of Primary Reinforcement And Reinforcer-Enhancement In Nicotine Self-Administration, Kathleen Robin Mcnealy
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Hormonal contraceptives contain a synthetic estrogen (e.g., ethinyl estradiol/EE) and/or a synthetic progestin (e.g., levonorgestrel/LEVO) and can exacerbate nicotine intake. However, whether altered intake reflects changes in nicotine reinforcement or enhancement by nicotine of co-occurring reinforcers is unknown. This reinforcer-enhancement effect is evidenced in rats when nicotine self-administration is increased by the presence of a visual stimulus (VS) reinforcer. This dissertation examined the effects of EE and LEVO on nicotine reinforcement and reinforcer-enhancement in ovary-intact female Sprague-Dawley rats. Rats were implanted with a jugular catheter and assigned to receive daily injections of EE (Vehicle, 0.125 [Low], or 0.18 [High] μg/day; …

Why Politics Become Violent, John Vonnes
Why Politics Become Violent, John Vonnes
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
A truly concrete, undisputed explanation of the emergence of ideology-based terrorism from previously peaceful political movements has to this point alluded the literature. The structural explanation comes closest to providing such an explanation, but it too is disputed and opposed by alternative theories. I therefore attempt to fulfill this gap by answering the question “why do ideology-based terrorists choose violence?” To do so, I investigate and test the viability of the structural explanation as a potential answer to this question through three case studies from across 20th century Europe, namely the Red Brigades, Francisco Franco’s Insurgency, and the 20th Century …

Adjudication Under Cover: Compliance And Inequality In The Criminal Courts, Mary Ellen Stitt
School of Criminal Justice Faculty Scholarship
State agencies tasked with governing poverty often aim to improve individuals’ social conditions by transforming their conduct. From welfare offices to prison reentry programs, those agencies work to compel behavioral changes by making the receipt of aid—or punishment— contingent on individuals’ compliance with requirements like appearances for regular appointments and negative drug test results. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in a court-mandated therapeutic program, this study shows how “compliance” with standard behavioral requirements is constructed around health, financial resources, and institutional trust, with the result that the most vulnerable people are systematically marked as noncompliant and channeled towardmore punitive interventions. This …

Background and aims: Vitamin D binding protein (DBP) serves a dual function as a vitamin D carrier and actin scavenger. Free DBP is present in high concentrations in serum, while a smaller pool is bound to lipoproteins like HDL and VLDL. The role of DBP's interaction with lipoproteins remains unclear. Given that HDL has been proposed to have both atheroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties, we sought to compare whether HDL-associated DBP and/or total serum DBP could serve as useful biomarkers for assessing disease severity in psoriasis and cardiovascular disease. Methods: Psoriasis (PSO) patients (N = 83), which were part of a …

Biological apatite mineral is highly substituted with carbonate (CO32−). CO32− can exchange for either phosphate, known as B-type, or hydroxyl groups, known as A-type. Although the former has been extensively studied, A-type CO32− substituted apatites are poorly understood. Therefore, A-type CO32− apatites with biologically relevant levels of CO32− (1.7–5.8 wt%) were prepared and characterized. The addition of A-type CO32− into the apatite structure caused the predicted expansion of the a-axis and contraction of the c-axis in the unit cell. This was accompanied by a significant modification in the atomic …

This paper demonstrates the feasibility of using an electronic nose to assess fish quality by analyzing air quality and examining volatile organic compounds (VOCs) alongside physical variables, with pH, protein content, and VOCs serving as chemical reference points. Artificial intelligence algorithms were employed to predict quality and calculate regression coefficients. Using the reference neural network algorithm based on chemical and physical compounds, regression coefficients (R values) achieved were 0.99, 0.98, and 0.97, respectively. Additionally, ANFIS (Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System) produced R values of 0.99, 0.85, and 0.98. Both fuzzy logic and ANFIS proved effective for predicting fish quality. Image processing …
Feminists For Sex-Based Rights: Trump Or Harris In The 2024 Election?, Kara Dansky
Feminists For Sex-Based Rights: Trump Or Harris In The 2024 Election?, Kara Dansky
Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence
Some US feminists who support sex-based rights for women and girls voted for Donald Trump in the 2024 US presidential election; others voted for Kamala Harris. For an American feminist to vote for a female Democrat for president is not surprising. Still, because the Democrats embraced “gender identity” at the expense of women and girls as a sex class, some feminists chose to vote for Donald Trump. This article explores some reasons for voting one way or the other (or not at all).

The Evolution And Continued Monitoring Of Seagrass Meadows In Higher Town Bay, Isles Of Scilly, United Kingdom, Alex Mallinson
The Plymouth Student Scientist
The pressures of modern society have been proven to have widespread negative effects on worldwide seagrass meadows, thus necessitating an increased need for the accurate and long-term monitoring of sites of special interest. These monitoring programs have typically relied on the in-situ measurement of individual seagrass plants. However, technological advancements have increased the prevalence of new surveying techniques, including satellite imagery, aerial photography and bathymetric measurement. With the advent of machine learning, the processing of these methods has increased in efficiency and become more objective in nature, transforming the way surveys are being undertaken. This study focuses on the unique …

The plant species established within floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) influence nutrient removal efficiency. To enhance adoption of FTWs by agricultural producers, both economic and ecological benefits from FTWs are needed to increase their use within irrigation retention reservoirs. Thus, we ascertained the feasibility of growing food crops in FTWs by evaluating two edible plant species to determine survivability and nutrient accumulation when grown in FTWs. We quantified plant growth (at saleable/harvestable size), nutrient uptake in root and shoot tissues, and overall nutrient removal efficiency of sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum) and Swiss chard (Beta vulgaris) over a …

How should the law respond to intentionally useless objects that are constructed from scarce materials and thrust into an overcrowded world?
Approximately sixty million tons of electronic waste, or "e-waste" -for example, discarded iPhones, refrigerators, desktop computers -is produced each year. This annual pile of electronic rubbish represents sixty-two billion dollars' worth of tangible raw materials (such as gold and other scarce metals) that has been rendered useless. In addition to wasting raw materials, e-waste clogs our landfills, poisons the groundwater, and taxes our capacity to store it. Worst of all, much of this waste is intentionally created …
