Epilepsy, affecting millions globally, often leads to significant cognitive and psychiatric comorbidities, particularly in children. Anxiety and depression are particularly prevalent, with roughly a quarter of pediatric epilepsy patients having a comorbid diagnosis. Current treatments inadequately address these issues. Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), a melanocortin peptide, has shown promise in mitigating deficits after early-life seizures (ELS), potentially through mechanisms beyond its canonical action on the melanocortin 2 receptor. This study explores the hypothesis that recurrent ELS is associated with long-term anxiety and that treatment with ACTH can prevent this anxiety through a mechanism that involves the melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R) in …

A Preliminary Report Of The Carotenoid Assessment In Adults 50 Years Of Age And Older In Louisiana, Mary-Catherine Feazell
Master's Theses
Fruits and vegetables are at the core of a healthy, balanced diet. They assist in preventing the development of chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer (Fadnes, et al., 2022). Aging is a natural biological process followed by disease, cognitive impairment, and a natural decline of the body’s ability to perform at its best. The older adult population is currently the fastest-growing population globally (El-Shebiney et al., 2022). Vitamin A is crucial for several parts of the body to function correctly. Despite the positive effects of Vitamin A on the body, the recommended dietary intake is not …

Asia-Pacific Intellectual Property Management and Innovation Book Series
Branding for universities is a relatively new concept, particularly as they position themselves to be an “entrepreneurial university.” This model necessitates a proactive approach to intellectual property (IP) management and technology transfer. Recent studies on university branding focus on higher educational institutions (HEIs) and how branding supports the development of their distinct identities and reputation. However, research on the perception of university-developed products, particularly in the context of the Philippines, is still limited. This study, therefore, examined the brand perceptions and purchase drivers of engaged stakeholders towards University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB)-developed products to evaluate the effectiveness of …

Towards A Global Understanding Of Tree Mortality, Andres Holz, International Tree Mortality Network
Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations
Rates of tree mortality are increasing globally, with implications for forests and climate. Yet, how and why these trends vary globally remain unknown. Developing a comprehensive assessment of global tree mortality will require systematically integrating data from ground-based long-term forest monitoring with large-scale remote sensing. We surveyed the metadata from 466 865 forest monitoring plots across 89 countries and five continents using questionnaires and discuss the potential to use these to estimate tree mortality trends globally. Our survey shows that the area monitored has increased steadily since 1960, but we also identify many regions with limited ground-based information on tree …

This effort compares the total area and spatial overlap between vegetation classes in existing vegetation maps of different eras to provide insight into possible changes in vegetation cover between 1851 and 2023 (Table 1). There are significant differences between the classifications and methods used to make each map, so we focus here on research questions that:
a) relate to at least one specific Key Habitat, and
b) where there is existing research suggesting that the specific pattern investigated is true, and
c) where the differences between the vegetation classifications compared are expected to be smaller than the differences over time. …

House Flies (Musca Domestica) In Abu Dhabi Emirate: Assessing Deltamethrin Insecticide Resistance And Associated Microbial Communities, Mohamad Abdelrahim Hamdan
Theses
This study investigates the common house fly (Musca domestica), a globally important insect that serves as both a decomposer and a mechanical vector for pathogens. The emergence of insecticide resistance, particularly knockdown resistance (kdr) mutations, has been reported in house fly populations, raising concerns for pest control. Additionally, house flies exhibit diverse bacterial communities, influencing pathogen transmission and environmental microbial dynamics. The primary objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of kdr mutations associated with insecticide resistance in house flies collected from the Abu Dhabi Emirate and to analyze their microbial composition using metagenomic approaches. House flies were …

Interactive Mapping Of Allergenic Urban Street Trees In Australia, Diman Krwanji, Anna J. Hopkins, Kristina Lemson, M. Hanson
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Tree pollen can be a persistent allergen for sensitised individuals, causing allergic rhinitis and asthmatic symptoms. Increased urbanisation results in larger populations living in cities and relying on urban greenspaces for recreation and associated ecosystem services, where the street landscapes are determined by urban planners. Urban forest strategies broadly divide planting choices based on biological functionality, climate resilience and environmental benefits but increasingly the associated physical and mental health impacts of urban vegetation are being considered. Here, we studied pollen allergenicity in four Australian cities by incorporating measures of allergenicity in existing street tree asset databases and visualising these using …

Thorium Ore Dust Research Applicable To Mineral Sands Industry Workers, Gregory S. Hewson, M. I. Ralph, M. Cattani
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Historically, radiation exposure to mineral sands workers arose primarily from intake of thorium associated with monazite dust generated in mineral separation plants. Research investigations in the 1990s provided greater insight into the characteristics of inhaled thorium ore dust and bioassay studies inferred that some workers had accumulated significant lung burdens of thorium. Recent changes to biokinetic models have increased the radiation dose assessed to arise from thorium intake, raising questions on the appropriateness of current assumptions used in exposure assessment and feasibility of further bioassay research. Past radiation research undertaken in the Western Australian mineral sands industry is summarised and …

Interdisciplinary Research Among Tourism, Public Health, And Global Health: A Promising Stream Focusing On Populations With Suboptimal Health Status, Jun Wen, Fangli Hu, Danni Zheng, Haifeng Hou, Wei Wang
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Research suggests that approximately 75% of the world's population suffers from suboptimal health status, meaning these individuals often feel unwell but have no clearly diagnosable conditions. Suboptimal health status, originating from traditional Chinese medicine, signifies an intermediate state between health and disease. Tourism has been deemed beneficial for personal health and general well-being. More recently, it has been proposed as a non-pharmacological intervention for individuals with dementia, given its potential contributions to health promotion and disease prevention/treatment. Yet, the tourism literature has paid scarce attention to populations with suboptimal health status, even as an aging society becomes inevitable. This paper …

Genomic Characterisation Of The Relationship And Causal Links Between Vascular Calcification, Alzheimer’S Disease, And Cognitive Traits, Emmanuel O. Adewuyi, Simon M. Laws
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Background/Objectives: Observational studies suggest a link between vascular calcification and dementia or cognitive decline, but the evidence is conflicting, and the underlying mechanisms are unclear. Here, we investigate the shared genetic and causal relationships of vascular calcification—coronary artery calcification (CAC) and abdominal aortic calcification (AAC)—with Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and five cognitive traits. Methods: We analyse large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWAS) summary statistics, using well-regarded methods, including linkage disequilibrium score regression (LDSC), Mendelian randomisation (MR), pairwise GWAS (GWAS-PW), and gene-based association analysis. Results: Our findings reveal a nominally significant positive genome-wide genetic correlation between CAC and AD, which becomes non-significant after …

Liability Considerations For Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal Projects In U.S. Waters, Korey Silverman-Roati, Martin Lockman, Romany M. Webb
Sabin Center for Climate Change Law
Scientists have identified a number of land- and ocean-based carbon dioxide removal (“CDR”) approaches. Ocean-based approaches, also known as marine CDR, hold great potential for uptake and sequestration of carbon dioxide. However, controlled field trials in the ocean are needed to better understand the efficacy and impacts of several marine CDR approaches. Legal considerations will have a major bearing on whether, when, where, and how such field research goes forward. Previous studies have analyzed the potential international and domestic legal framework applicable to marine CDR research and subsequent deployment (if that is ultimately deemed appropriate). However, relatively little research has …

Efficacy Of Immersive Virtual Reality Gameplay In Environmental Attitude Change: The Case Of Abandoned Offshore Oil Platforms In Santa Barbara, Arun Prasad Srinivasan Manoharan
Efficacy Of Immersive Virtual Reality Gameplay In Environmental Attitude Change: The Case Of Abandoned Offshore Oil Platforms In Santa Barbara, Arun Prasad Srinivasan Manoharan
Master's Theses
Public perception plays an important role in shaping conservation policies and decisions, especially in contested environmental spaces. Offshore oil platforms, historically viewed as environmental hazards, have been found to serve as marine habitats that support diverse marine life. However, public perception remains largely negative, influenced by concerns over pollution from past oil spill accidents. Traditional environmental education methods, such as lectures and documentaries, often fail to engage audiences effectively or shift entrenched opinions. This study explores the efficacy of immersive Virtual Reality (VR) gameplay in changing environmental attitudes, specifically in the context of abandoned offshore oil platforms in Santa Barbara, …
Defining Transcriptional Signatures Of Susceptibility For Ceftriaxone And Tetracycline In Neisseria Gonorrhoeae, Sanjana Logu
Defining Transcriptional Signatures Of Susceptibility For Ceftriaxone And Tetracycline In Neisseria Gonorrhoeae, Sanjana Logu
Theses
Resistance to antibiotics is the ability of bacteria to survive in spite of the administration of drugs designated to kill them; and overuse of antibiotics over the past decades has led to a vast increase in resistance. Most infections are treated empirically, such that patients are given a recommended course of antibiotics, however these infections are not frequently tested for their antimicrobial susceptibility profiles (i.e., tested only in the case of treatment failure). This can lead to inappropriate prescription which can increase the selective pressure of antibiotics on other bacterial members of our microbiomes. Susceptibility testing would help determine the …

Theses and Dissertations
Classification “flickering,” where the classification of an object changes inconsistently between consecutive video frames, remains a persistent issue in modern object classification algorithms. This problem undermines the reliability of autonomous vision systems and poses significant risks in high-stakes applications such as autonomous vehicles. This thesis explores the use of response surface methodology, a statistical design of experiments technique, to optimize hyperparameters across three object classification pipelines. The first pipeline combines YOLOv8 with SORT to establish a benchmark. The second integrates a Bayesian back-end, while the third employs an exponential smoothing back-end. Hyperparameter tuning was conducted using a two-step process: an …

Improving Zero Shot Learning By Linking Multi-Label Cnns With Llms, Michael A. Wegner
Theses and Dissertations
Classifying previously unseen objects poses a significant challenge for traditional computer vision algorithms, which rely on extensive labeled training data. Zero-shot reasoning offers a way to overcome this limitation. This research explores a novel method for image recognition using the Animals with Attributes 2 (AWA2) dataset as a proof of concept. A multi-label ResNet50 model predicts core attributes like color, ear shape, or number of limbs. Those attributes then feed into ChatGPT which leverages its extensive knowledge base to classify the animal based on the provided attributes. This novel approach skips the need to train on every possible class. Instead, …

Class Imbalance: A Landscape Of Classification Models, Joshua L. Edmonds
Theses and Dissertations
Class imbalance poses significant challenges in machine learning classification. This study evaluates the performance of seven models (ANN, k-Means, kNN, LDA, LR, SVM, XGBoost) across multiple imbalance levels (10\%, 5\%, 1 \%, 0.5\%) and investigates the effectiveness of sampling techniques (Undersampling, SMOTE, SMOTE-ENN). ANOVA results confirm that model choice is the most critical factor, with XGBoost and SVM demonstrating superior robustness. SMOTE improves recall but reduces precision, while undersampling generally degrades overall performance. While significant, imbalance levels do not play a critical role in model effectiveness.

Utilizing DOEHRS-IH and DOEHRS-HC, a retrospective epidemiological study was performed on Robins AFB personnel to investigate relative risks of hearing loss associated with exposures to continuous noise, impulse noise, and ototoxic metals and solvents. An analysis of variance identified age, frequency octave, era and exposure type as influencers of hearing threshold shifts. Risk ratios showed higher risk of hearing loss for exposures to continuous noise + impulse noise + ototoxic metals as well as continuous noise + impulse noise at low frequencies (500Hz and 1,000Hz), and lesser risk for exposures to continuous noise + impulse noise and continuous noise + …
