Pharmaceutical companies are subject to monopolies of their own making in the pharmaceutical market. Legislators have tried to limit these monopolies by passing legislation in the hopes that it will lower prices. Unfortunately, these attempts to lower the costs of prescriptions have caused more issues to arise over time. When employing complex aspects of intellectual property law, such as evergreening and product hopping, there is no control exerted over pharmaceutical companies.

Over the last decade, many states have passed laws seeking to restrict or ban certain medications approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). One of the most recent examples: gender-affirming care medications for transgender youth and young adults. As of January 2025, twenty-six states have passed laws banning or restricting the provision of genderaffirming care to minors. Proponents of these laws challenge the procedures and prescription drugs as “experimental,” while critics of these laws characterize both as best-practice medical care. Deep-learning approaches can greatly benefit the modeling and design of nanophotonic and optical structures. Traditional full-wave simulations are time and resource-intensive, which can act as a bottleneck in photonic design. On the other hand, deep-learning approaches for designing the response of nanophotonic geometries can be computationally inexpensive and produce accurate and efficient results. The focus population of this study is those with cognitive disabilities, which limit in some way a person’s ability to complete mental tasks, such as communication, planning, or remembering. The primary purpose is to focus on the participants' sense of agency and perceived stigma. The Sense of Agency Scale (SoA) measures a participant’s consciously perceived control over their mind, body, and the immediate environment. The Perceived Disability Social Stigma Scale (PDSS) measures to what degree participants believe that people with disabilities are stigmatized in their respective communities. In recent years, marathon and ultra-marathon participation has grown substantially. Past research has shown that a range of variables influence the performance of endurance athletes. This study included participants of the Forgotten Florida 50-mile and 100-mile race and the Chattanooga Erlanger Half-Marathon and Marathon. These athletes were questioned about their sleep, nutrition, and training habits implemented for the races they completed. The results show the significance of carbohydrate consumption throughout the race for energy maintenance and shortened race times. Hydrogel materials, which are polymer networks comprised mostly of water, hold significant promise for biomedical applications due to their compatibility with biological systems. Conventional hydrogel materials are often brittle and weak, but most applications in biomedical systems require materials to be strong and tough. The topology of a polymer network dictates its mechanical properties. An important strategy for designing tougher hydrogels is the release of stored length, such as from the unfolding of polyprotein cross-linkers. Despite a global trend towards more equal gender representation, not every country has improved at the same pace or to the same level. This study investigates language as a potential tool for better understanding the differences between countries regarding the presence of female managers. By using language as a tool, I arrive at two primary results: (i) pronoun drop is significantly and inversely associated with the presence of female managers, but gendered language structures have little association, and (ii) a gender intensity index can produce misleading results. Sexual abuse, in all of its many forms, has been a controversial topic for centuries. This project looks at a specific subset of sexual abuse: high school student-teacher assaults. Victims of sexual abuse often face barriers to justice. This project addresses several demographic barriers. Research has shown that people of color and members of the queer community are typically reluctant to report due to police and societal perceptions of these groups. Teenagers face additional challenges, such as not know how their peers, parents, school, or community will react. Gene regulation is governed by complex networks of interactions between enhancers and promoters, regions of the genome that are typically distant from one another yet functionally linked through chromatin looping. Recent research has revealed the significant role of Gquadruplexes (G4s) in facilitating these interactions. This thesis explores the role of long Gquadruplex regions (LG4s) in enhancer–promoter communication, proposing that these regions mediate physical interactions between enhancers and their target promoters through direct G4:G4 interactions. Using a chromatin conformation capture (EQuIP-seq), electrophoretic mobility shift assays (EMSA), and luciferase reporter assays, the study demonstrates that LG4s may drive gene expression by promoting …

The Salvia genus, commonly known as the sages, is the largest genus in Lamiaceae with almost 900 known species. In Kentucky, a reported 12.7% of mothers smoke cigarettes during pregnancy. Nicotine readily crosses the placental and blood-brain barriers, with fetal blood concentrations reaching 15% higher than maternal levels. By stimulating and desensitizing nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the autonomic nervous system, nicotine disrupts uteroplacental blood flow, potentially altering fetal growth and development.

The purpose of this qualitative, interpretive study was to explore the perceptions of Black, veteran, in-service teachers regarding recruitment and retention strategies in rural Tennessee K-12 public schools. This study addressed significant racial disparities in the Tennessee education system, where the percentage of Black teachers was notably lower than the percentage of Black students, particularly in rural schools. Data were collected from 20 Black, veteran, in-service teachers using questionnaires and semi-structured interviews to examine the factors influencing their decisions to seek employment and remain in rural districts. Research has shown that acute supplementation with dietary nitrate will increase the amount of circulating nitrate, boosting NO bioavailability via the nitrate-nitrite-NO pathway, providing enhanced vasodilation. There are limited dietary nitrate studies including young, healthy female participants. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of acute dietary nitrate, via beet root juice (BRJ) supplementation, on resting heart rate and blood pressure in young, healthy women. A total of 11 women (aged 18-22) performed a repeated-measures, placebo-controlled, counter-balanced, crossover design investigated the impact of dietary nitrate on the cardiovascular system’s resting measurements after one hour. Firefighters experience immense job-related stress. Firefighters can respond to hundreds of traumatic calls or critical incidents throughout their careers. Witnessing a critical incident can be highly stressful and mentally taxing. Therefore, some fire departments offer mental health resources such as Critical Incident Stress Management/Debriefing (CISM/D) and Peer-group support to help firefighters cope with stressful incidents. Additionally, firefighters may seek professional mental health treatment. To investigate firefighters’ perceptions regarding the effectiveness of these resources, an anonymous survey of Rhode Island firefighters was conducted. Rescue and recovery missions on extraterrestrial sites are an inevitable necessity, especiallywith increased extraterrestrial exploration. Robotic and crewed missions provide significant challenges due to budgetary restrictions and time constraints. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) techniques leverage shared swarm knowledge for solution convergence. However, traditional PSO exhibits performance degradation in dynamic scenarios. The author presents Time-Variant Particle Swarm Optimization (TVPSO), which weighs newer measurements higher than previously held values. The evolution of similar phenotypes poses an interesting challenge in evolutionary biology. While divergent ecologies may drive differing morphology, physiology, or behavior, similar phenotypes are often due to similar ecology or selection for mimicry. One prominent case of mimetic phenotypes is found in hairy and downy woodpeckers. While several hypotheses might explain the hairy-downy mimicry complex, I aimed to assess the idea that downy woodpeckers benefit from resembling hairy woodpeckers.
