Designing More-Than-Data Walks: A Situated Approach To Understanding Place In A Data-Driven Society, Louise Mullagh
Designing More-Than-Data Walks: A Situated Approach To Understanding Place In A Data-Driven Society, Louise Mullagh
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
In our increasingly data-driven world, reliance on quantitative data to understand place risks overlooking the unique, nuanced dynamics that contribute to a holistic understanding. This research introduces More-than-Data (MtD), a concept that emphasizes the integration of data, information, knowledge, wisdom and lived experience to cultivate situated, engaging and balanced understandings of place. This research explores walking as a research method to embed MtD into practice. Walking, as a situated and deliberate practice, facilitates contemplation, observation, and direct interaction with the environment. Drawing on five MtD walks conducted in various locations, this research demonstrates the potential of walking as a practice …

Towards Distributed Creativity: Understanding Generative Ai In The Context Of Design Philosophy And The Material Turn, Ákos Schneider, Dávid Csűrös
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
This study examines the transformative role of generative AI (GenAI) in design through the lens of the material turn, which foregrounds materiality’s agency in shaping human practices. In this context, GenAI is not a mere tool but an active participant in co-creation, challenging subject-object distinctions in design philosophy. Drawing on ontological design, postphenomenology, cognitive science, and material engagement theory, we reinterpret creativity as an emergent phenomenon within sociomaterial networks. Our framework reveals design as a relational process, where creativity unfolds through adaptive interactions, shifting the designer’s role from control to orchestration. We conclude by highlighting the subject- and object-decentered interpretation …

Craftsman Gaze Data Study To Enhance Craft Material Selection And Facilitate Knowledge Transfer, Catherine Schwarz, Jean-François Bassereau, Jenny Faucheu
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
Material selection methods and tools are mainly quantitative multicriteria based and cater essentially to engineering material selection requirements. However, shifts in material sourcing and manufacturing as well as data processing tend to lean towards tailored fabrication models in which the material leads the design. This highlights emerging opportunities and requirements in material selection, including the need to consider the situation of the person making the assessment, which has come to the forefront of material selection. Designers and researchers have already provided valuable research to enhance material selection on a sensorial basis. However, little has been recommended for material selection based …

Schiff bases exhibit a wide range of biological activities, including antibacterial, antifungal, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory properties. The aim of study was to synthesized 2-amino-benzothiazole derivatives and showed their novel structure leads to potent antimicrobial activity. The Schiff base compounds derived from 6-bromo-4-fluoro-2-aminobenzothazol was prepared from the reaction of 6-bromo-4-fluoro-2-aminobenzothazol compound (W1) with potassium thiocyanate in the presence of bromine. Unsaturated Alpha-Beta (W2-6) compounds were obtained from the reaction of and aromatic benzaldehyd with para -hydroxy acetophenone in a basal medium. The interaction of alpha-beta - unsaturated compounds with 4,6-dichloro-2-aminobenzothiazole gives compounds (W7-11) 4-(1-(4,6-dichlorobenzothiazole-2-El amino) - 3-aryl) phenol. The prepared compounds …

Osteoporosis is defined as a heterogeneous bone disease that leads to weakening in the structure of bones. Bone structure remains dynamic throughout an individual’s life, it undergoes continuous growth and resorption in a specific mechanism called bone turnover. Osteoporosis assumes the perturbation of equilibrium of the growth to destruction towards the destructive away. Bone turnover markers consider as indicators for pathway of bone turning over, it classified into two groups: first group to build the bones, the second group to break it down. By using bio tests and assays, these markers can be evaluated to monitor the activity of the …

Applications Of The Mathieu Groups And Information Theory In Dna Encoding Functions, Juan C. Nava Jr
Applications Of The Mathieu Groups And Information Theory In Dna Encoding Functions, Juan C. Nava Jr
Theses and Dissertations
A foundational idea in mathematics lies in breaking down existing components into their bare fundamentals. As evidenced by prime numbers and composites, we learn this idea at an early age. Categorizing these broken-down components into their simplest form allows mathematicians to construct proofs from emergent patterns. John Conway’s Atlas of Finite Groups in the 1990s was particularly concerned with the categorization of structures known as groups. There are certain axioms a group must adhere to, which amount to the retention of symmetry; ultimately a group helps us to better understand symmetric actions performed on a set with a binary operation. …
Knowledge Gaps And Personal Experiences: A Qualitative Examination Of Women's Menstrual Health And Birth Control Choices, Danielle M. Jackson
Knowledge Gaps And Personal Experiences: A Qualitative Examination Of Women's Menstrual Health And Birth Control Choices, Danielle M. Jackson
Honors Theses
Women all over the world face significant knowledge gaps and societal perceptions (Mukanga et al., 2023) regarding menstruation and birth control, which impact their understanding of both the physical and mental symptoms associated with these experiences. From a young age, women are often left to navigate these processes without sufficient education or support, leading to confusion, misconceptions, and a lack of empowerment when it comes to managing their reproductive health (Guendelman et al., 2000). The stigma surrounding topics like menstruation and hormonal contraception can further isolate women, making it difficult for them to seek reliable information or openly discuss their …

Gnns For Network Classification In Single Cell Rna Sequencing Data, Reid C. Sewell
Gnns For Network Classification In Single Cell Rna Sequencing Data, Reid C. Sewell
Capstone Projects
A common technique when investigating a disease is to profile gene expression, as this gives unique insights into the functions of a cell. Gene expression data gathered from single cell RNA sequencing can be encoded into a gene co-expression network, which is a graph of potential relationships between different genes. One method for interpreting data encoded as a graph is to use a graph neural network, or GNN. This project designs and implements a GNN architecture to accomplish classification tasks on graph data. Then, given a dataset of gene co-expression networks made from multiple single cell RNA sequencing studies, the …

Phosphomimetic Substitution Of Serine Residue Ser260 With Aspartate Suggests Regulation Of Activity Of Human Cytosolic Malate Dehydrogenase By Phosphorylation, Charles Pelagalli '25, Luke Tischio, Kathleen Cornely
Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications
Human cytosolic malate dehydrogenase (MDH1) is a key enzyme involved in the malate-aspartate shuttle of eukaryotic cells, and which catalyzes the reaction of oxaloacetate to malate. As MDH1 is responsible for maintaining redox homeostasis by regeneration of NAD+ for glycolysis, its regulation is of particular interest in pharmaceutical applications, specifically in treating cancer cells that proliferate quickly and hence rely greatly on glycolysis. While the regulation of MDH1 by the phosphorylation of key residues has been previously documented, work still remains in identifying the specific residues involved in regulation of the enzyme by phosphorylation. In this study, we used …

High-resolution digital elevation models (HRDEMs) from LiDAR and InSAR technologies have significantly improved the accuracies of mapping hydrographic features such as river boundaries, streamlines, and waterbodies over large areas. However, drainage crossings that facilitate the passage of drainage flows beneath roads are not often represented in HRDEMs, resulting in erratic or distorted hydrographic features. At present, drainage crossing datasets are largely missing or available with variable quality. While previous studies have investigated basic convolutional neural network (CNN) models for drainage crossing characterization, it remains unclear if advanced deep learning models will improve the accuracy of drainage crossing classification. Although HRDEM-derived …

Profiling Gene Expression In Epstein-Barr Virus Infected Heart Tissue, Jacob Smith
Honors Theses
The overall purpose of this project is to evaluate active gene expression in heart tissue samples infected by the Epstein-Barr virus. By cataloging active gene expression, one could elucidate the cellular and molecular mechanisms that underpin viral infection’s role in the development of heart pathology. This was accomplished by extracting nucleic acids from homogenized heart tissue samples, employing reverse-transcription PCR (RT-PCR) to synthesize cDNA from extracted mRNA), and performing a qPCR to quantify the levels of gene expression from these cDNA samples. The genes explored within this project were: Hsp60, a chaperonin protein involved in mitochondrial stress response; BCL2, an …

Jim Crow Medicine: Race In Jama, 1883-1982, Han Koehle
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Using a historical approach I examined race discourse within the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) between 1883 and 1982 to better understand how race concepts connect to the production of medical knowledge and ignorance; how they influenced the production of legal and medical policy; how they related to the production and maintenance of health injustice; and how oppressions and injustices are interrelated. I found a clear differentiation between Jim Crow era and post-Jim Crow race discourse. Jim Crow era race discourse was characterized by a nested, bio-nationalist construct of race, an explicit commitment to White supremacy, a sense …

Neurodevelopmental And Environmental Mechanisms Of Invasion, Proliferation, And Tumor Cell Fate Specification In Glioblastoma, Bianca Lynn Myers
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Glioblastomas (GBMs) are the most aggressive primary brain tumors, and despite over 50 years of research efforts, the median survival remains at 14 months post-diagnosis. The current standard of care consists of maximal surgical resection radiotherapy with concurrent chemotherapy using temozolomide. However, the highly proliferative and invasive nature of GBM cells renders total resection nearly impossible as tumor cells invade the surrounding healthy tissue. The molecular and environmental drivers of these tumorigenic phenotypes are largely unknown. Here, we demonstrate that the neurodevelopmental transcription factor ASCL1 enhances tumor cell proliferation and invasion while activating the expression of a neural stem cell …
