Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers

Image guided radiotherapy (IGRT) using kilovoltage cone-beam CT (CBCT) has become an indispensable tool to ensure the geometric accuracy of radiotherapy treatment delivery. Although significant technical advances have been made in reducing imaging dose, the repeated imaging procedures can still accumulate significant dose to healthy tissues. Despite the widespread use, we still lack clear guidance for optimisation and widely accepted frameworks for evaluating the quality and suitability of CBCT imaging protocols. To address this gap, the 2022 European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO) Physics Workshop focused on image-quality and imaging-dose optimisation for IGRT using CBCT. This publication represents a …

Chemotherapeutic resistance is a major obstacle to chemotherapeutic failure. Cancer cell resistance involves several mechanisms, including epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), signaling pathway bypass, drug efflux activation, and impairment of drug entry. P-glycoproteins (P-gp) are an efflux transporter that pumps chemotherapeutic drugs out of cancer cells, resulting in chemotherapeutic resistance. Several types of long noncoding RNA (lncRNAs) have been identified in resistant cancer cells, including ODRUL, MALAT1, and ANRIL. The high expression level of ODRUL is related to the induction of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) gene expression, resulting in the emergence of doxorubicin resistance in osteosarcoma. lncRNAs are observed to be regulators of …

No Escape From Microplastics: Contamination Of Reef Manta Ray Feeding Areas In A Remote, Protected Archipelago, Jessica Savage, Joanna Harris, Heather J. Koldewey, Tom B. Letessier, M Rowcliffe, D Morritt

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Remote islands receive plastic debris from elsewhere, ranging from microplastics (>5 mm) to macroplastics, which can further breakdown into microplastics. The ingestion of microplastics by marine species has been linked to decreased fitness. Reef manta rays, Mobula alfredi, are liable to ingest microplastics due to their filter-feeding strategy and habitat overlap with plastic hotspots. Their population is in decline due to unsustainable fishing pressures and a slow life history, with potential additional demographic pressure from plastic pollution. This study investigates the concentration and characteristics of microplastics in the top 0.5 m of the water column in reef manta rays …

Retracted: Accurate Electrocardiogram Classification Of Heart Disease Using Deep Learning Network, Hadeel M. Saleh, Sahar Hamad Ahmed, Akeel Sh. Mahmoud

Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics

Long short-term memory networks can effectively process complex temporal patterns in electrocardiogram data. These sequential models excel at classifying heart disease from the rich signals captured by electrocardiograms. However, traditional algorithms struggle with the intricate waveforms encoded in each heartbeat. Deeper architectures such as LSTM are better equipped to untangle the subtle variations between healthy sinus rhythms and lethal arrhythmias. In this study, an LSTM model was developed to diagnose disease from the PTB dataset. The network was trained using a fusion of deep learning schemes for sequential data. The model underwent several evaluations, from a confusion matrix mapping predictions …

The Relationships Among Orthorexia Nervosa, Perfectionist Tendencies And Academic Achievement In Nutrition And Dietetics Students, Sophia Grace Owens

Master's Theses

Eating disorders can cause a disturbance in how the health of food is viewed (Cerniglia et al., 2017). If a person has disturbances in their eating behaviors that can cause harm to their health, but the behaviors do not fit into the criteria of a specific eating disorder, they fall into the category of a disordered eating pattern (Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, 2018). Because of the stress the college environment can cause students, some college students may cling to anything they can control, which may be reflected in their dietary habits. Orthorexia Nervosa (ON), a disordered eating pattern, is …

The Impact Of Growth Hormone-Releasing Hormone Antagonist On Human Adipose-Derived Stem Cells, Jeanne Michelle Dugas May 2025

The Impact Of Growth Hormone-Releasing Hormone Antagonist On Human Adipose-Derived Stem Cells, Jeanne Michelle Dugas

Master's Theses

Obesity is a condition that affects over 40% of American adults and contributes to numerous preventable health issues. This condition is caused by increased adipose tissue, which forms when stem cells transform into adipocytes. Mesenchymal stem cells, including human adipose-derived stem cells (hASC), are multipotent with the ability to differentiate into adipocytes, osteocytes, or chondrocytes. Many factors affect this transformation, including the peptide growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH). The main role of GHRH is to trigger the release of growth hormone, but it has also been found to play an important role in adipocyte metabolism. We expect that if the differentiation …

The Antioxidant Potential Of Rosemary Leaf-Derived Nanovesicles, Shani Akila Griffin

Master's Theses

Human dermal fibroblasts are essential for maintaining skin homeostasis. However, exposure to exogenous and endogenous stressors can lead to fibroblast instability, extracellular matrix degradation, and excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. These factors contribute to skin aging and ROS-induced skin disorders leading to hair loss. Adverse effects from synthetic treatments have driven interest in natural alternatives like plant extracts for skin therapy. However, the polyphenols in these treatments require an effective delivery system to ensure their stability and targeted application. Plant derived nanovesicles (PDNVs) are emerging as a promising natural alternative for therapeutic applications. Their biocompatibility, stability, and encapsulated compounds …

Alveolar bone supports and anchors teeth. The parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) pathway plays a key role in alveolar bone biology. Salt-inducible kinases (SIKs) are important downstream regulators of PTH/PTHrP signaling in the appendicular skeleton, where SIK inhibition increases bone formation and trabecular bone mass. However, the function of these kinases in alveolar bone remains unknown. Here, we report a critical role for SIK2/SIK3 in alveolar bone development, homeostasis, and socket healing after tooth extraction. Inducible SIK2/SIK3 (Ubq-creERt;Sik2f/f;Sik3f/f) deletion led to dramatic alveolar bone defects without changes in tooth eruption. Ablating these kinases impairs alveolar bone formation due to disrupted osteoblast …

Redefining The Photic Zone: Beyond The Autotroph-Centric View Of Light In The Ocean, Thomas Davies, Tim Smyth May 2025

Redefining The Photic Zone: Beyond The Autotroph-Centric View Of Light In The Ocean, Thomas Davies, Tim Smyth

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Traditional measures of the photic zone have remained focused on autotrophs, limiting understanding of how changing marine lightscapes impact heterotrophs that use light as a resource or an environmental cue. We propose a new photic zone definition that encompasses all biological processes influenced by celestial light, and a new measure of photic zone depth, the minimum light intensity that elicits biological responses. This approach allows photic zone measures to be inclusive of all marine photobiology driven by sunlight, moonlight, or starlight, and enables urgently needed exploration of the nature, extent and ecological implications of changing marine lightscapes.

Jewish Contributions To The Anti-Apartheid Movement, Ashley Davis

Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology

In his autobiography Long Walk to Freedom, Nelson Mandela (1995) wrote, "I have foundJews to be more broad-minded than most Whites on the issues of race and politics, perhaps because they themselves have historically been victims of prejudice" (p. 91). The centuries of persecution faced by Jews engrained into J ewish teachings and culture a strong sense of morality and pushed them towards social and political activism. In South Africa, while White Jews were considered a part of the privileged minority, they faced discrimination and blatant anti-Semitism. Their privileged position as Whites and simultaneous ethnic status as 'lesser' than …
