Nanotechnology has significant advantages over traditional methods for degrading dyes. Plant-based nanoparticles were generated apart from other biomaterials. This work employed a green sol-gel approach to prepare titanium dioxide nanoparticles by using Petai (Parkia speciosa) peel extract. The produced TiO2 was analyzed by XRD, UV-DRS, FE-SEM, FTIR, Raman, zeta, and nanoparticle size analysis. PP-TiO2 nanoparticles having a tetragonal anatase phase, spherical, stable particles, and a small particle size (16–22 nm) were successfully produced. When exposed to UV light, the nanoparticles displayed strong photocatalytic activity, eliminating Acid Yellow 25 in less than 120 minutes. This work demonstrates …

Feed It To The Ocean: The Federal Approach To Decommissioning In Alaska Native Climate Adaptation Projects, Sophia Tidler
Alaska Law Review
This Note calls on the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) to issue guidance clarifying that concurrent decommissioning is an in-scope “connected action” under the National Environmental Policy Act for relocation, managed retreat, and protect-in-place projects aimed at replacing infrastructure in environmentally threatened Alaska Native communities. In 2018, the Denali Commission completed the Final Environmental Impact Statement for Alaska’s first community-driven village relocation of the millennium, facilitating construction of essential infrastructure at Mertarvik, the relocation site for the village of Newtok. However, the Denali Commission chose to exclude a full-scale decommissioning plan for Newtok’s existing infrastructure. Today, more than seventy-three Alaska …

The Future Of Alaska’S Wetlands In A Post-Sackett World, Johanna Crisman
Alaska Law Review
In 2023, the United States Supreme Court decided Sackett v. Environmental Protection Agency, which effectively restricted the United States Army Corps of Engineers’ (“USACE”) and the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ability to regulate development of wetlands. The State of Alaska submitted an amicus brief to the Court on behalf of the petitioners, the Sackett family. In the wake of the decision, Governor Dunleavy praised the decision by the Court, emphasizing that the decision provided the state more autonomy over its own wetlands. Still, there is concern by environmentalists that the State does not have the resources to protect the wetlands …

The small, spring-dwelling snails, Pyrgulopsis Call & Pilsbry, 1886, form a diverse radiation in Western North America. In this study, we examine the validity of three species of Pyrgulopsis, Pyrgulopsis pilsbryana (Baily & Baily, 1952), P. nonaria Hershler, 1998, and P. transversa Hershler, 1998. These three species of Pyrgulopsis are found primarily in Utah, with ranges extending into Idaho, Wyoming, and Nevada. They were originally diagnosed primarily on the number and position of penial glands, but subsequent examination with mitochondrial DNA data suggested they should be synonymized. Here, we incorporate additional mitochondrial and nuclear DNA data, increased geographic sampling, …

Potential Epigenetic Impacts Of Phytochemicals On Ruminant Health And Production: Connecting Lines Of Evidence, Sebastian P. Schreiber, Juan Villalba, Mirella L. Meyer-Ficca
Wildland Resources Student Research
The once mysterious “dark matter of nutrition”, comprising countless plant derived secondary compounds, also known as phytochemicals, is now understood to have significant and wide-ranging effects on consumers, including myriad health benefits in humans and livestock. The selective consumption of phytochemically rich and diverse plants, in appropriate doses, by ruminants represents an adaptive means of therapeutic and prophylactic self-medication. Due to their chemical structure, phytochemicals have long been recognized as antioxidants. However, the mechanisms that underlie numerous additional phytochemical-based health benefits are generally less understood. These effects (i.e., anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and anticarcinogenic effects) are likely related to epigenetic processes. Evidence …

A 23-year-old man with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN 1) with pancreatic tail masses and Cushing syndrome (status after transsphenoidal adenomectomy) presented with a slow-growing, asymptomatic right lower lung lobe mass confirmed to be an atypical carcinoid tumor by pathologic staging following successful basilar segmentectomy with mediastinal lymphadenectomy. Pulmonary carcinoid tumor (PCT) is a rare neoplasm in patients with MEN 1, but there is limited data on trends in atypical versus typical carcinoid tumors in these patients. This case emphasizes the need to characterize these trends given the implications for metastatic potential and 5-year survival, which can help guide …

Previous research has found the link between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and externalizing behaviors later in adolescence and adulthood. However, limited studies have explored longitudinal trajectories of aggressive behaviors affected by ACEs. This study aimed to investigate how aggressive behaviors change over time and compare the trajectories of aggressive behaviors between children with three or fewer (low-risk ACEs) and those with four or more ACEs (high-risk ACEs) with the role of school connectedness on the trajectories of aggressive behaviors over time. The study sample consisted of 4231 children collected by the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study, a longitudinal …

While neural compression has the potential to revolutionize image compression, recent studies have emphasized its ability to introduce subtle artifacts that could alter the image content. Concerned about the impact of such modifications on scientific images, this work explores the potential effects of neural compression on these images, focusing on two critical aspects: semantic understanding and forensic integrity. We use scientific image datasets to assess the performance of neural compression techniques on Visual Question Answering (VQA) and copy-move forgery detection tasks. Our findings indicate that the subtle changes introduced by neural ] compression do not significantly degrade the performance of …

Proteogenomic analysis is applied to samples from the CALGB 40601 (Alliance) randomized neoadjuvant trial of trastuzumab, lapatinib, or the combination to identify biomarkers associated with pathological response status. Absence of ERBB2 gene amplification and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) protein overexpression by proteogenomics is associated with non-pathological compete response (pCR) (p < 0.05), highlighting potential false positives from standard diagnostics. Pathway analysis in proteogenomics-confirmed HER2+ samples identifies elevated epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and WNT-β-catenin signaling in non-pCR cases before treatment. Twenty-four pCR-associated proteins reproduce in a second proteomic dataset, and four (GPRC5A, TPBG, SP140L, and NEU1) are significant in a third. A meta-analysis of ten diverse neoadjuvant anti-HER2 treatment regimens from four independent studies confirms that non-pCR cases express higher levels of mRNA for G protein-coupled receptor class C group 5 member A (GPRC5A, p = 0.0002) and trophoblast glycoprotein (TPBG, p = 0.00008). Thus, proteogenomic analysis identifies negative biomarkers for pCR and alternative plasma membrane targets for treatment-resistant HER2+ breast cancer.

Human norovirus is the leading cause of viral gastroenteritis across all age groups. While there is a need for human norovirus antivirals, therapeutic development has been hindered by a lack of cell culture systems and animal models of infection. Surrogate viruses, such as Tulane virus (TV), have provided tractable systems to screen potential antiviral compounds. Our previous work demonstrated that TV encodes a viral ion channel, which dysregulates cytosolic calcium signaling. We set out to investigate whether host pathways triggered by viral ion channel activity, including store-operated calcium entry (SOCE), play a role in virus replication. Using pharmacologic inhibitors and …

Background/Objectives: Adjuvant radiation for gynecologic malignancies often exposes organs at risk (OARs), such as the bone marrow, bowel, rectum, and bladder, to radiation, leading to toxicities that impact treatment tolerance and patient quality of life. Scanning proton beam therapy, particularly with Individual Field Simultaneous Optimization (IFSO), may offer dosimetric and biological advantages over volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT). This study evaluates the clinical impact of IFSO-based proton planning in post-operative gynecologic cancer patients.
Materials and Methods: Fourteen patients receiving adjuvant proton therapy to 45 Gy in 25 fractions were retrospectively analyzed. Comparison VMAT plans were generated on the same datasets. …

Hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs) promote lung protection and pathogen eradication during acute lung injury. We therefore tested the theory that pharmacologic stabilization of HIFs dampens lung injury during SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia. Initial studies in murine SARS-CoV-2 models showed improved outcomes after treatment with the FDA-approved HIF-stabilizer vadadustat. Subsequent studies in genetic models implicated alveolar-expressed Hif1a in mediating lung protection. Therefore, we performed a randomized, double-blinded, multicenter phase 2 trial in patients admitted for SARS-CoV-2 infection and concomitant hypoxia (SpO2 ≤ 94%). Patients (n=448) were randomized to oral vadadustat (900 mg/day) or placebo for up to 14 days. Safety events were similar between …

The United States invests billions of dollars annually to perform stream restoration projects, yet few studies have investigated the effects this ecosystem manipulation has on nutrient cycling and associated water quality. Water quality improvement remains a substantial motivation for mitigating catchment-scale disturbances, especially in urban streams. Various urban land use practices impact the transfer and transport of nutrients such as soluble reactive phosphorus, ammonium, and nitrate plus nitrite from land into the streams and rivers. The uptake length (Sw), or the distance a dissolved nutrient travels downstream within a stream reach, can be measured using short-term nutrient injections, where shorter …

Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) represent a heterogenous group of tumors with significant inter- and intra-patient variability. Once considered to be rare, neuroendocrine neoplasms are being increasingly recognized through the advent of advanced diagnostic techniques, which may be contributing to the significant increase in the incidence and detection rate of these tumors. NENs can be classified into well differentiated and poorly differentiated neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) or neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs). The proliferation rate of NETs can vary from Ki-67 1-55%. In addition, the SSTR expression can vary significantly. Because of this high "heterogeneity", their detection and characterization have become essential to disease management, …
Rethinking The Philosophy Of Religion: Toward A Better Relationship Between Religion And Science, Jovino De Guzman Miroy
Rethinking The Philosophy Of Religion: Toward A Better Relationship Between Religion And Science, Jovino De Guzman Miroy
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
This paper rethinks the philosophy of religion by asking what it can learn from the less antagonistic and more dialogic relationship between science and religion. Greater heterogeneity amongst student beliefs requires that the philosophy of religion become pluralistic. Moving beyond antagonism, the task of the philosophy of religion is to improve the relationship between religion and science for the better. The paper also probes what it means to study religion scientifically. The reform of the philosophy of religion proposed here means that the field shed its apologetic nature, but continue its project of reason-giving for a synthesis of religious experience. …
How The Immediate Physical Environment Affects The Non-Physical Aspect Of Health, Katryn Noelle E. Valeriano
How The Immediate Physical Environment Affects The Non-Physical Aspect Of Health, Katryn Noelle E. Valeriano
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
Human health has been closely intertwined with environmental health. By the term “environment,” I refer not only to nature or relationships found in an ecosystem but also to the immediate physical milieu of an individual or what is termed as “personal space.” Before the pandemic, the notion of personal space was more fluid and receptive due to the ease one had in “re-framing” the environment and reorienting oneself. However, during the pandemic, the personal space of humans was restricted in so many ways through lockdowns and various forms of isolation. This article intends to re-interpret concepts, such as of “physical …

Professional Sport Venue Threats, Security Measures, And Technological Solutions, Brandon Allen, Laurajean Holmgren, Stacey A. Hall
Global Sport Business Journal
Several incidents involving large crowds have led venue security directors to adopt preventive strategies. Venue organizers should foster a safe and secure environment, which requires assessing risk levels, recruiting and training staff, exercising plans and protocols, and leveraging technology solutions. The purpose of this study is to explore professional sport venue threats, security measures, and technology utilization. Security directors (n=52) from five major sports leagues in the United States (MLB, MLS, NBA, NFL, and NHL) participated in the study. Key findings focus on staffing, training and development, fan behavior, and facility operations. Recommendations include investing in multiple strategies to enhance …
Using Lrr Standard Deviation As A Genotype Quality Control Measure And Its Downstream Effect On Cnv Calling., Adam Dunne
Using Lrr Standard Deviation As A Genotype Quality Control Measure And Its Downstream Effect On Cnv Calling., Adam Dunne
ORBioM (Open Research BioSciences Meeting)
Background:
Log R Ratio (LRR) is a genotype intensity measurement returned alongside routine genotype results and used to detect structural variation in the genome known as copy number variation (CNVs). Although LRR standard deviation (SD) is commonly applied as a quality control measure in CNV studies, limited research has explored its effect on genotype quality and the potential impact on CNV calling.
Methods:
A total of 720,152 genotypes were available on 716,234 cattle. Among these were 1,044 cattle that had duplicate genotype samples where one sample was considered gold standard (LRR SD < 0.3, Call Rate ≥ 0.95). Genotype concordance was calculated for all duplicates. PennCNV was used to call CNVs and concordance among CNV calls per duplicate animal was determined using the Jaccard index.
Results:
Across all 720,152 cattle samples, the mean …

Environmental Screening For Multidrug Resistant (Mdr) Organisms In The Surgical Ward Of An Irish Tertiary Referral Hospital., Sinead A. Fahy, Sinéad Fahy
ORBioM (Open Research BioSciences Meeting)
The aim of the current study was to determine the prevalence of Multidrug Resistant Organisms (MDRO) colonisation on a surgical ward of an acute tertiary hospital. MDRO determination was conducted on a patient-occupied surgical ward over a 6-month period. The screen included sink, and shower drains in bathrooms and sinks of multi-bedded and single-occupied rooms. Swabs were cultured on chromogenic agar to enable detection of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Carbapenemase producing enterobacterales (CPE), Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) and Extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL). Suspect resistant organisms were confirmed using NG-Carba 5 (NG Biotech, Guipry, France) lateral flow tests, Vitek 2.0 …
Artificial Intelligence And Privacy, Daniel J. Solove
Artificial Intelligence And Privacy, Daniel J. Solove
Florida Law Review
This Article aims to establish a foundational understanding of the intersection between artificial intelligence (AI) and privacy, outlining the current problems AI poses to privacy and suggesting potential directions for the law’s evolution in this area. Thus far, few commentators have explored the overall landscape of how AI and privacy interrelate. This Article seeks to map that territory.
Some commentators question whether privacy law is appropriate for addressing AI. In this Article, I contend that although existing privacy law falls far short of resolving the privacy problems with AI, privacy law properly conceptualized and constituted would go a long way …
Examining The Impact Of Stress On Collegiate Flight Students, Shivanee D. Cannon-Patron
Examining The Impact Of Stress On Collegiate Flight Students, Shivanee D. Cannon-Patron
Beyond: Undergraduate Research Journal
Stress may negatively affect the timely completion of a student pilot's flight training. A student pilot influenced by stress may be subject to what is known as "falling behind the aircraft," a condition that constantly requires minor interventions from their flight instructor. This lack of situational awareness and decreased performance may inadvertently cause the student pilot to repeat the flight lesson, increasing the time spent in the training course.

PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
This literature review investigates the influence of Passiflora incarnata on the Gut-Brain Axis, focusing on the role of flavonoids and the specific biological mechanisms involved in this process. The study aims to identify Passiflora incarnata as a practical, non-harmful, and cost-effective alternative to current modern anxiety medications. This study also emphasizes the need for further clinical trials to integrate Passiflora incarnata further into healthcare settings. Using a narrative review approach, this analysis will examine pre-existing empirical articles, all of which have been found on credible sites, are peer-reviewed, and have been published within the past twenty-five years. The data discussed …
