Husbandry And Management Interventions For The Conservation And Welfare Of Captive Animals – A Systematic Evidence Map, Anaelle Lemasson Lemasson Jul 2025

Husbandry And Management Interventions For The Conservation And Welfare Of Captive Animals – A Systematic Evidence Map, Anaelle Lemasson Lemasson

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Zoos and aquariums are poised to play increasingly important roles in mitigating the global biodiversity crisis. However, the ultimate success of ex-situ conservation depends on animal welfare and effective husbandry and management practices. As such, an empirical understanding of ‘what works’ in zoo management is crucial for guiding success and embedding cost-effective practices. Here, we present the first systematic evidence map for husbandry and management interventions used in zoos and aquariums. We identified and extracted 1,070 articles spread across 45 journals, and examined patterns within taxonomic, spatial, temporal, and thematic categories. Studies originated from 516 institutions in 69 countries, and …

Effective And Eco-Friendly Strategies To Control Birds In Industrial Estate, Jasti Rahayu, Upik K. Hadi, Susi Soviana Jul 2025

Effective And Eco-Friendly Strategies To Control Birds In Industrial Estate, Jasti Rahayu, Upik K. Hadi, Susi Soviana

Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development

Bird infestations in industrial areas can cause infrastructure damage, contamination, and health risks. Despite these impacts, they are rarely addressed in environmental management strategies. At the Kaltim Industrial Estate (KIE) in Bontang, East Kalimantan, synanthropic bird species that thrive in human-altered environments have become persistent nuisances, particularly because of structural opportunities for roosting and altered ecological conditions. To address this issue, this study applied Integrated Pest Bird Management (IPBM), a non-lethal and environmentally friendly approach that combines species identification, behavior analysis, and targeted deterrents. IPBM was selected for its adaptability to industrial settings and its alignment with sustainable development goals. …

Advanced Quantification Pipeline Reveals New Spatial And Temporal Tumor Characteristics In Preclinical Multiple Myeloma, Zhixin Sun, Jacqueline M Godbe, Alexander Zheleznyak, Brad Manion, Junhao Hu, Julie L Prior, Kathleen Duncan, Ulugbek S Kamilov, Monica Shokeen

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Radiological imaging plays an indispensable role in both preclinical and clinical studies of multiple myeloma (MM). However, manual quantification in longitudinal small animal PET/CT is limited by annotator bias, signal artifacts from urinary/fecal excretion, and voxel misalignment due to non-rigid registration. To address these challenges and improve characterization of tumor biology, we developed a semi-automated PET/CT quantification pipeline targeting defined regions of interest (ROIs) within the bone marrow-rich mouse skeleton, achieving sub-organ spatial resolution, including in anatomically complex sites such as the pelvis. We applied this MM-specific preclinical pipeline to analyze tumor distribution in a longitudinal molecular PET study …

Microbial And Ecophysiological Indices Of Agricultural Soils As Affected By Different Farming Practices In Tropical Monsoon Climate, Gulshan Ara Begum, Sajal Roy, Nasrin Chowdhury

Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development

Organic farming is increasingly promoted as a sustainable alternative to conventional agriculture due to its positive effects on soil microbial dynamics, a critical component of ecosystem functioning. However, empirical comparisons of microbial responses across these systems are scarce. Therefore, we conducted a study to assess the various microbial indices of soils taken from distinct crop fields (e.g., brinjal, chilli, tomato, bean, and fallow lands) managed under both conventional and organic farming techniques. Composite soil samples from surface layer (0–15 cm) were collected in a completely random way from Bandarban upazila of Bangladesh (22°11'24.0"N 92°09'00.0"E, organic fields; 22°10'12.0"N 92°09'36.0"E, conventional fields). …

Sustainable Water Management In Universities: Perceptions, Behaviours, And Challenges, Hastin Setiani, Dwita Sutjiningsih, Riri Fitri Sari

Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development

Universities are increasingly adopting the “living laboratory” model to implement and evaluate sustainability innovations. These settings enable students, staff, and stakeholders to co-create and test real-world solutions, including those related to water use. Universitas Indonesia promotes sustainability through an integrated approach encompassing policy development, academics programs, and infrastructures. Prior studies using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) have demonstrated that attitudes and perceived norms significantly influence sustainable behavior. However, limited research has examined how these dynamics operate within Indonesian universities or how university-based initiatives may contribute to broader urban water management. This study addresses that gap by examining perceptions, behaviors, …

Convergence In Action: Where Environmental Science Meets Sustainable Development Practice, Herdis Herdiansyah Jul 2025

Convergence In Action: Where Environmental Science Meets Sustainable Development Practice, Herdis Herdiansyah

Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development

Since the introduction of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the pursuit of human well-being through development and planetary sustainability for a better future has become a global discourse (de Jong & Vijge, 2021; Naseer et al., 2025; Arora-Jonsson, 2023). The SDGs have catalyzed interdisciplinary dialogue and strengthened global commitment (Naseer et al., 2025) by emphasizing the balance and integration of economic, social, and environmental aspects (Sedovs et al., 2025). However, the assumption that all goals can be achieved simultaneously and harmoniously seems hasty and potentially ignores the inherent tensions between ecological and …

A Technique For Estimating The Number Of Shoots On Pole-Sized Red Pine: The Relationship Of Selected Tree Parameters To Number Of Shoots In Central Wisconsin Sand Plains Plantations, J. H. Hainze, D. M. Benjamin Jul 2025

A Technique For Estimating The Number Of Shoots On Pole-Sized Red Pine: The Relationship Of Selected Tree Parameters To Number Of Shoots In Central Wisconsin Sand Plains Plantations, J. H. Hainze, D. M. Benjamin

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Diameter at breast height (dbh) , of ten tree parameters tested, was most highly correlated with the number of shoots per tree in six red pine plantations in the central Wisconsin sand plains. Tree height, frequently used as an estimator of shoot number in young conifers, was not highly correlated with shoot number. A strong, nonlinear correlation existed between branch diameter and number of shoots per branch. Multiple regressions using several tree parameters yielded the highest R2 values, however, dbh was judged the simplest and most practical estimator of shoot number for central Wisconsin red pine plantations.

Winter Wheat Cold Hardiness And Fructan Reserves Affected By Rhopalosiphum Padi (Homoptera: Aphididae) Feeding, S. G. Wellso, C. R. Olien, R. P. Hoxie Jul 2025

Winter Wheat Cold Hardiness And Fructan Reserves Affected By Rhopalosiphum Padi (Homoptera: Aphididae) Feeding, S. G. Wellso, C. R. Olien, R. P. Hoxie

The Great Lakes Entomologist

The cold hardiness of 'Winoka' and 'Genesee' winter wheats was each significantly less (P = 0.05) when fed upon by bird-cherry oat aphids, Rhopalosiphum padi, than non-infested seedlings. Aphid feeding also reduced the amount of fructans in crown tissue ca. 20% compared to extracts from crowns of non-infested seedlings. It appears that the cold hardiness of these wheat cultivars may have been reduced because of fructan depletion by insect feeding.

Control Of Hyadaphis Tataricae (Homoptera: Aphididae) On Honeysuckle Including Observations On Host Plant Resistance, Philip L. Nixon, Carolyn Peet Nixon, James E. Schuster Jul 2025

Control Of Hyadaphis Tataricae (Homoptera: Aphididae) On Honeysuckle Including Observations On Host Plant Resistance, Philip L. Nixon, Carolyn Peet Nixon, James E. Schuster

The Great Lakes Entomologist

llyadaphis tataricae causes witches-brooming to the growing tips of Zabelii and other large bush-type honeysuckles in the north central states. Insecticide tests show that acephate (Orthene), dimethoate (Cygan), or oxydemeton-methyl (Metasystox-R) sprayed monthly in June and July will reduce witches-brooming. Malathion was not effective in reducing damage. Host plant resistance observations indicate that Lonicera x notha, L. x muendeniensis, L. x amoena 'Alba', L. x ).;ylosteoides, and L. tatarica 'Arnold Red' are ll. tataricae resistant. These large bush-type honeysuckles would appear to be good replacements for Zabelii and other susceptible honeysuckles in ornamental plantings.

Will There Be A Pill For That? ‘Money Dysmorphia’ And The Medicalization Of Struggles For Subsistence, Bojan Savic Jul 2025

Will There Be A Pill For That? ‘Money Dysmorphia’ And The Medicalization Of Struggles For Subsistence, Bojan Savic

Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis

This article questions the rationality, operation, and effects of money dysmorphia as an emerging mental health diagnosis. It critiques the medicalization of financial angst amid the capitalist “polycrisis”, showing how the individuation and somatic pathologization of class subordination, socioeconomic precarity, and struggles for subsistence obscure capitalist inequalities, depoliticize them, and shield them from critique. I identify five concurrent strategies through which struggles for subsistence are medicalized: trivialization, reversal of social import, repetition, direct depoliticization, and the substitution of inequality with poverty. Furthermore, I show how the medicalizing discourse reifies money dysmorphia by constructing its social costs. The article concludes by …

Progress And Regression, Modernity And Social Evolution, José Maurício Domingues Jul 2025

Progress And Regression, Modernity And Social Evolution, José Maurício Domingues

Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis

This paper deals with progress and evolution. Regarding progress, it in particular critically engages with recent works (Wagner, Allen, Jaeggi), arguing that we need a more assertive perspective. Our immersion in an evolutionarily and contingently created but globally established (modern) imaginary is found to underpin that more assertive perspective of progress. To articulate its perspective more generally, the paper draws upon a former elaboration on evolutionary homology and homoplasy regarding power. Thereby it tackles the development of morals/ethics, leading to a discussion of progress – and regression – including but going beyond material and cognitive issues. It grapples with evolutionary …

The Regulations Of Social Meaning In The Digital Platform Era, Peter O'Loughlin Jul 2025

The Regulations Of Social Meaning In The Digital Platform Era, Peter O'Loughlin

Akron Law Review

The regulation of social meaning has traditionally been subjected to rational choice theory (RCT) perspectives in an age when the internet and technology were in nascent stages of development. Today, social meaning is being regulated in much more subtle but powerful ways by digital platforms who are leveraging behavioral economic (BE) insights to control, dictate, and reshape the social meaning of a variety of social roles, conduct, objects, and events. Whilst this form of social government (or private ordering of society’s social fabric) has obvious and desirable benefits to recalibrating society as a collective and assuaging or reversing the stereotyping …

Effect Of Cellulase Preparation On Fermentation Of Silage, E No, Y Harasawa, A Ataku, N Narasaki, T Sueyoshi

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The effects of cellulase preparation (Meicelase) on silage fermentation were studied using the first cutting alfalfa and timothy. In one-liter laboratory silos with Meicelase of 0, 0.2, 0.4 and 0:8% of the fresh grasses, the fermentative quality was examined throughout a 30 day ensilage period. The amount of the lactic acid in the silage with the Meicelase was considerably greater than the control silage with no additive. In addition, the pH of that silage was low and the content of water soluble carbohydrate (WSC) was high. However, the differences in the amount of Meicelase applied had no effects in the …

Effects Of Sample Drying Method On Estimates Of Nutritive Value Value, S Uchida, H Hayashi, T Horigome

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The influence of different drying methods for the sample used for analysis on the estimates of the nutritive value of silage was investigated. The silages and hay were made from the same grass and fed to three wethers to determine digestibilities. The samples for analytical use of silages and hay fed, and feces excreted, were prepared by three drying techniques of freeze drying (F), oven drying at 60 C (L) and oven drying at 100 C (H) and then each dried sample was ground in a Wiley mill to pass a 0.5 mm screen. The residual moisture in prepared samples …

Effect Of Lactic Acid Bacteria On Silage Fermentation, Ph Hellings, G Bertin, M Vanbelle Jul 2025

Effect Of Lactic Acid Bacteria On Silage Fermentation, Ph Hellings, G Bertin, M Vanbelle

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Inoculants were tested to determine their suitability for use as silage aids. Studies carried out in laboratory indicated (1) that the minimum inoculum should be at least 105 viable organisms per gram of fresh fodder and (2) of all bacterial strains tested, only the Lactobacillus and, specifically, L. casei improved storage characteristics. But the efficiency of an inoculant was subordinated to the fermentable sugars content of the crops. In this respect, alfalfa and second cut grass had the lowest potential for ensilage. Energy was supplied as a mixture of milled barley and amylolytic complex. The influence of a 1: 1: …

Ensilage Of Alfalfa Press-Cake. A Kinetic Model For Ph, Acidity And Nitrogen Evolution, G Amdrich, L Lencioni, R Florentini, G Anelli

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

A kinetic model to describe the time evolution of pH, acidity, metabolizable nitrogen and k1 • B, ( a function related to the bacteria concentration) during ensilage of alfalfa press-cake is suggested. The basic hypotheses of the model are given together with the related differential and integral equations. The kinetic model has been tested using experimental data obtained from two samples of alfalfa press-cake respectively ensiled with and without acid addition. The correlation coefficients obtained indicate the reliability of the suggested model.

Ensilage Of Alfalfa Press-Cake, G Anelli, G Andrich, M Contini, L Lencioni

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The Istituto Industrie Agrarie of the University of Pisa has developed a wet green crop fractionation process which involves the ensilage of the press-cake. This note reports some experimental results on the alfalfa press-cake ensiled with or without addition of acid. The evolution of silages was evaluated through organoleptic and chemical parameters. The good behaviour· during the ensilage shows that alfalfa press-cake is suitable to be ensiled even without previous acidification.
