Nanoparticle Iron Based Catalysts For Clean Water And Other Applications, Shelby Lynn Foster
Nanoparticle Iron Based Catalysts For Clean Water And Other Applications, Shelby Lynn Foster
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores the development, characterization, and application of iron-based catalysts for environmental remediation and energy generation. The research focuses on Fe-based nanomaterials for water purification, electrochemical ammonia production, and ethanol oxidation enhancement. The first section of the dissertation investigates the removal of water contaminants using nickel-iron (NiFe) bimetallic nanoparticles. Various NiFe ratios were synthesized and tested for their efficiency in degrading the azo dye (Orange G), with lower Ni content formulations achieving 80–99% dye removal within 60 minutes. Results show that changing the molar ratio of nickel to iron caused different removal rates, as well as the extent of …

A Security Worth Having: The Pursuit Of Happiness Through Reading Burney, Radcliffe, And Austen, Samantha Meeks
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores the works of three female authors of female protagonists in the long 18th century: Frances Burney’s Camilla and Evelina; Anne Radcliffe’s The Mysteries of Udolpho and The Italian; and Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey, Sense and Sensibility, and Pride and Prejudice. By following the paths to security the female protagonists of these novels fashion, and identifying the elements of Stoicism and related Hellenism and the aspects of cybernetics, this dissertation delves into the choices female protagonists make along the way regarding their security and how such choices lead to agency and self-fashioning for these women. Emotional, economic, and …

Project Wolbachia is a dengue control initiative in Singapore. Guided by Secondary Risk Theory, this study examined how primary (dengue) and secondary (Wolbachia) threat and coping appraisals shape public support and reactive behavior toward the project. A nationally representative survey of 1,000 Singaporeans showed that support was positively linked to the perceived primary risk, the efficacy of the project and the government, while negatively related to the perceived secondary risk. Reactive behavior was positively associated with perceptions of both primary and secondary risk. Media attention and trust in the government indirectly influenced support and behavior moderated by knowledge.

Background: Rare genetic variation provided by whole genome sequence datasets has been relatively less explored for its contributions to human traits. Meta-analysis of sequencing data offers advantages by integrating larger sample sizes from diverse cohorts, thereby increasing the likelihood of discovering novel insights into complex traits. Furthermore, emerging methods in genome-wide rare variant association testing further improve power and interpretability.
Results: Here, we conduct the largest meta-analysis of whole genome sequencing for low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), a therapeutic target for coronary artery disease, analyzing data from 246 K participants and integrating 1.23B variants from the UK Biobank and the Trans-Omics …

The Decline And Transformation Of Smallholders In Chinese Agriculture: National Trends, Qian Forrest Zhang, Meiling Wu
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Using data from official statistical sources and a nationally representative survey, we find that since 2001, China’s agricultural labor force has declined by over 50 percent—a loss of over 200 million smallholders, probably the largest in human history. This trend is the most pronounced in livestock sectors: from 2012 to 2021, 62.5 million smallholder units have disappeared. The 150 million remaining smallholders are mostly commodity producers, participating widely in commodity relations to access agrochemicals, machinery, rental land, and wage labor to produce for markets. The ageing smallholder population also face challenges in intergenerational reproduction, which will accelerate its decline.

The widespread use of smartphones has raised concerns about problematic usage behaviors, including excessive screentime and frequent phone checking, which can disrupt daily functioning. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a multifaceted nudge-based intervention in reducing smartphone use through subtle changes to smartphone settings. The intervention incorporated adjustments such as disabling face/touch ID, setting longer passwords, switching to grayscale mode, and removing social media apps from the home screen. A randomized within-subject cross-over trial with counterbalancing was conducted over a two-week period using a daily diary approach paired with objective smartphone usage data to track the impact of …

Perioperative identification of ischemic-hypoxic tissue is essential for reducing the risk of mastectomy skin flap necrosis (MSFN), a major complication following mastectomy. Implant-based breast reconstruction is jeopardized in the presence of MSFN. However, existing technologies are limited by depth insensitivity, dye-related risks, the need for contact sensors, and an inability to simultaneously assess both blood flow and oxygenation. A multi-wavelength speckle contrast diffuse correlation tomography (MW-scDCT) system was developed for noncontact, dye-free, and depth-sensitive imaging of tissue hemodynamics in a rat model incorporating four distinct flap scenarios: sham (SH), implant (IM), half necrosis (HN), and full necrosis (FN), representing varying …

Post-translational modifications (PTMs) are critical regulators of protein function, and their disruption is a key mechanism by which missense variants contribute to disease. Accurate PTM site prediction using deep learning can help identify PTM-altering variants, but progress has been limited by the lack of large, high-quality training datasets. Here, we introduce PTMAtlas, a curated compendium of 397,524 PTM sites generated through systematic reprocessing of 241 public mass-spectrometry datasets, and DeepMVP, a deep learning framework trained on PTMAtlas to predict PTM sites for phosphorylation, acetylation, methylation, sumoylation, ubiquitination and N-glycosylation. DeepMVP substantially outperforms existing tools across all six PTM types. Its …

Introduction: Little is known about change in sleep duration over time and Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) risk.
Methods: ADRD cases were identified among Southern Community Cohort Study participants enrolled in Medicare. Sleep duration was reported at enrollment and first study follow-up and categorized (short (< 7 hours), recommended (7-9) and long (> 9)), change was calculated between timepoints. Adjusted Cox proportional hazards regression was used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs, 95% CIs) for incident ADRD.
Results: We identified 2,093 ADRD cases among 17,945 participants. Compared to maintaining optimal sleep duration (7-9 hours) over 5 years, suboptimal changes were associated with 20-69% greater ADRD risk: adjusted …

The identification of selective molecules that interact with specific human nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) subtypes is essential for elucidating their structure and function. Animal venoms, particularly snake venoms, offer a diverse repertoire of bioactive molecules that may selectively bind to human nAChR subtypes. In this study, we cloned transcripts encoding human nAChR subunits and successfully expressed their extracellular domains (ECDs) in yeast cells. We further examined the interactions between nAChR subunits and snake venom toxins, identifying that snake Asp49-phospholipase A2 (Asp49-1) strongly interacts with the human β2 and β4 subunits while exhibiting weaker interactions with α subunits. To delineate the …

cAMP influences multiple aspects of cardiac biology, including the regulation of contraction, relaxation, and overall stress responses. The functional outcomes of cAMP are driven by the spatial arrangement of enzymes that produce and degrade cAMP (adenylyl cyclase [AC] and phosphodiesterase, respectively), together with the downstream targets of cAMP. We performed proximity-dependent biotin identification (BioID) of near-neighbor interactions proteomics in cardiomyocytes to generate proximity maps for three cardiac AC isoforms. Processing and trafficking functions were the most common gene ontology terms for ACs, with AC5 and AC6 generating unique proximal protein sets compared to AC9. AC5/6 proximal proteins showed significant localization …

Journal of Higher Education & Student Affairs
Parental separation during childhood leads to long-lasting psychological and socioemotional impact on the lives of emerging adults as they transition into higher education. The long-term effects of childhood parental separation on college students' academic performance, physical health, and overall mental wellbeing are well-documented. However, students can develop resilience to cope with challenging family and life experiences and even demonstrate post-traumatic growth. Post-traumatic growth refers to the positive changes and experiences college students discover after enduring life disruptions, such as being separated from their parents at an early age. To better understand the connection between parental separation and posttraumatic growth, a …

Curing The Peasant's Disease : Frank Oldt’S Work And Research On Hookworm Disease In South China, 1905-1926, Jiaying Fu
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
While current scholarship on “hygienic modernity” in China focuses on the construction of urban health systems and institutional infrastructures, this study proposes an alternative analytical lens by foregrounding the domain of agricultural health. It aims to investigate how early twentieth-century medical researchers uncovered public health models grounded in China’s agrarian conditions. Taking the case of Frank Oldt (1879–1976), a medical missionary living in Guangdong between 1905 and 1926, this research examines how he identified, interpreted, and sought to mitigate the problem of hookworm disease—a parasitic condition intricately linked to China’s farming practices and rural environmental conditions.
Specifically, this thesis aims …

BACKGROUND: Phase 1 or phase 1/2 trials are a first step in pediatric cancer drug development. Currently, there is a paucity of information regarding contemporary outcomes for pediatric patients enrolled in these trials. We describe characteristics and outcomes of patients enrolled in pediatric phase 1 clinical trials over a 9-year period at a single institution.
METHODS: We queried our clinical trials management system to generate a list of patients enrolled and treated on pediatric phase 1 or phase 1/2 trials from 2011 to 2019. We collected baseline demographics, clinical data, efficacy, and safety endpoints post-enrollment including: time to death, objective …
Tradition, Individuality, And Innovation In Western Classical Music Performance: A Quantitative Analysis Of Bach’S Fourth Cello Suite Prelude, Clare Monfredo
Tradition, Individuality, And Innovation In Western Classical Music Performance: A Quantitative Analysis Of Bach’S Fourth Cello Suite Prelude, Clare Monfredo
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Why do we seek out new performances of a commonly performed piece of music? An essential tradition of Western classical music (WCM) is the performance of canonical works by composers, an activity that requires the interpretation and execution of written scores by individual performers. In this practice, performers are not only expected to determine the composer’s “intentions,” but also somehow (paradoxically) share these in a “unique” performance interpretation. In musical education, performers are trained by teachers to create these “unique” interpretations by learning how to intuit composers’ intentions in a system that passes down interpretative traditions through master-apprentice one-on-one lessons. …

The increasing use of spatial molecular technologies such as multiplex immunofluorescence (mIF) and spatial transcriptomics (SRT) has driven the need for robust statistical methods to analyze the spatial architecture of tissues. However, a lack of consensus on “gold standard” approaches present challenges for benchmarking and comparison. To address this gap, we developed “scSpatialSIM”, an R package for simulating biologically realistic spatial single-cell molecular data. “scSpatialSIM” enables users to efficiently simulate single-cell spatial patterns without requiring reference datasets, incorporating features such as cell clustering, cell co-localization, tissue compartments, and tissue holes. Additionally, the package supports simulation of both categorical data (e.g., …
Disability Theatre Communities: Engaging Artists And Audiences In Contemporary International Performance, Joseph Paul Hill
Disability Theatre Communities: Engaging Artists And Audiences In Contemporary International Performance, Joseph Paul Hill
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
“Disability Theatre Communities” examines how communities are constructed in, through, and around contemporary international disability theatre performances. It explores ideas of community formation and intersection across three case studies to elucidate the various ways in which disability theatre artists, productions, companies, and organizations attract, engage, and educate variable artist and audience communities. The project analyzes Rome, Italy’s Teatro Patologico and its Integrated Theatre of Emotion, a theatrical training program for neurodivergent performers; Wales-based writer, theatre-maker, and dramaturg Kaite O’Reilly, whose international collaborations center d/Deaf and disabled performers and foreground audience accessibility; and the biennial BIT (Blind in Theatre) International Festival …
The Effect Of Tbi On Working Memory And Anxiety In Rats, Mariola Sobolewska
The Effect Of Tbi On Working Memory And Anxiety In Rats, Mariola Sobolewska
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a significant public health concern, often leading to cognitive and emotional impairments. This study examined the effects of TBI on working memory and anxiety-like behavior in young male Sprague-Dawley rats using the Radial Arm Maze (RAM) and Elevated Plus Maze (EPM), which are behavioral assessments. The RAM tests spatial working memory by evaluating the animal’s ability to remember and efficiently navigate multiple arms to retrieve rewards. The EPM assesses anxiety-like behavior based on the animal’s preference for open versus closed arms. The study utilized young male Sprague-Dawley rats, a well-established rodent model known for its …
Re-Envisioning Digital Agency: From Representationalism To Interpretant-Driven Epistemology, Michael C. Lee
Re-Envisioning Digital Agency: From Representationalism To Interpretant-Driven Epistemology, Michael C. Lee
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis examines the epistemological and ethical foundations of digital technologies, particularly code and algorithmic systems, by considering their entanglement with representationalism. Arguing that code now functions as a dominant social agent and epistemic subject, through the concept of the Code’s-eye view, I explore how automated datafication reduces human experience to quantifiable inputs, reinforcing epistemic closure and social fragmentation. Drawing on pragmatist philosophy, including Peirce’s semiotics, Dewey’s democratic ethics, and Rorty’s conversational inquiry, I propose an interpretant-driven epistemology grounded in communal inquiry and interpretive openness. This alternative framework resists the binary logic of algorithmic rationality by emphasizing conflict and the …
Detecting Sonic Hedgehog Expression In The Adult Mouse Brain Using A Gene Expression Tracer, Kendra Stephens-Jones
Detecting Sonic Hedgehog Expression In The Adult Mouse Brain Using A Gene Expression Tracer, Kendra Stephens-Jones
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Sonic Hedgehog (Shh) is best known for its role in development, yet evidence supports Shh signaling plays a functional role in the adult brain. Previous work demonstrated that Shh is expressed by dopamine (DA) neurons in the ventral midbrain and that loss of Shh from these neurons leads to late-onset motor and structural abnormalities resembling Parkinson’s disease. However, the extent of Shh expression and its connectivity to the striatum in the adult mouse brain remain unclear due to the lack of reliable antibodies for Shh detection. To address this gap, the present study employed Shh L/L and DAT-Cre+/- mice …
Love Amid The Rage: Feminist Affect In Women's Life-Writing, Genesis Siverio
Love Amid The Rage: Feminist Affect In Women's Life-Writing, Genesis Siverio
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The aim of this thesis is to show the ways women’s emotions or affect, particularly rage and love, are described by women writers in their most intimate stories. I discuss the way emotion has been demeaned, and how feminist scholars have instead viewed the body as a place of insight, reclaiming a knowledge from the senses. In the midst of white supremacy and heteropatriarchy, women give voice to their affectual experiences and cultivate the feelings they have so often been denied. Focusing on the particular ways women’s anger manifests in their lives and in their bodies, I zoom in on …

Beef production is an important component of the world’s food supply, with production being near 59 million tons in 2023 (USDA, 2023). Enhancing our understanding of the factors influencing metabolism will lead to improvements in production efficiency. Using RNA-seq and WGCNA of longissimus muscle samples, gene expression and metabolic pathway analyses were performed to examine relationships with ultrasound and body mass variables. In this study, body weight (BW), ultrasound back fat (BF), ultrasound muscle depth (MD), and body condition score (BCS) were traits recorded for 18 cull beef cows. As expected, all production-related traits monitored (WT, BF, MD, and BCS) …

The mammalian kidney contains numerous nephrons connected to the collecting ducts, and each nephron consists of a glomerulus, a proximal tubule, the loop of Henle (LoH), and a distal tubule. Folliculin (FLCN) is a causative gene for Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome, which is characterized by a variety of manifestations, including renal cysts and cancer. Although deletion of Flcn in the mouse collecting duct and distal nephron leads to cyst formation, its precise role in the entire nephron remains unclear. Herein, nephron-specific Flcn knockout mice exhibited cystogenesis along the entire nephron segments, most prominent in the LoH, preceded by an irregularly shaped lumen …
