Investigating The Presence Of R-Loops At The Centromeres Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Daniel D'Souza

This study investigates the presence and localization of R-loops at the centromeres of Drosophila melanogaster. R-loops are non-canonical nucleic acid structures that have been implicated in various cellular processes, including genomic instability and accurate chromosome segregation. Although previous research has found R-loops at Drosophila satellite sequences and LTR retrotransposons, their presence and function at the centromeres of a whole organism remain largely unknown. Using IF-FISH (immunofluorescence-fluorescence in situ hybridization), we stained R-loops with the S9.6 antibody. The module aimed to engage prospective mathematics teachers in the practice of working with datasets and analyzing data to investigate questions related to local Brooklyn schools, as well as to gain deeper insight into the students and communities where they conduct their field experiences. Vacatur is the default remedy for successful administrative rulemaking challenges brought under the Administrative Procedure Act (APA). Yet its broad and sweeping effects raise critical questions regarding its appropriateness as a one-size-fits-all remedy. Unlike injunctive relief, which is subject to a rigorous heightened standard, and remand without vacatur, which has a comparable standard of its own, vacatur is routinely awarded without similar scrutiny, leading to inconsistencies in the judicial application of remedies in APA challenges.

Music influences emotion, physiology, and cognition, yet little is known about how the frequency it is tuned to affects these influences. Prior research has shown that music tuned to 432 Hz can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and improve sleep. My colleagues and I conducted two studies to investigate this. Our research found that music tuned to 432 Hz promotes a significant increase in memory retention and induces a state of focus and relaxation. These results suggest that shifting from the standard tuning frequency of 440 Hz to 432 Hz could have a profoundly positive impact on our daily lives. …

Mannosidases are a type of glycoside hydrolase (glycosidase) that facilitate the hydrolysis of glycosidic bonds in mannose-containing polysaccharides and glycans, including those found in glycoproteins. Their main role is to cleave specific linkages involving D-mannose residues, effectively trimming or degrading mannose-rich oligosaccharides. These enzymes are crucial in N-glycosylation pathways, which are essential for proper protein folding, glycoprotein maturation, and the regulation of carbohydrate metabolism in eukaryotic cells.

Nearly six million in the U.S. experience symptoms associated with the diagnoses of comorbid Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Many with these diagnoses fail to respond to first line treatments that include medication and psychotherapy. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy is a non-invasive treatment option for individuals who fail to respond to first line treatments.

Methods: This program evaluation completed a retrospective chart review of adult patients with comorbid MDD and PTSD, who received TMS treatments at a private practice clinic between the time frame of September 2024 and October of 2025.

Background: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), a chronic lung disease in preterm infants, often leads to acute respiratory exacerbations triggered by infections. Our previous mouse study suggested that azithromycin's anti-inflammatory properties may benefit virus-induced respiratory illnesses prophylactically.

Methods: In this single-center, double-blind RCT, 60 children (6 months to 6 years) with BPD received azithromycin (5 mg/kg three times weekly; n = 30) or placebo (n = 30) for one winter season (October to March). The endosteum is a thin layer of connective tissue lining the inner surfaces of bones adjoining the medullary cavity. The endosteum houses a variety of cells crucial for bone growth, repair and remodelling, including bone-forming osteoblasts, bone-resorbing osteoclasts and their precursor cells. Historically, the endosteum has been extensively studied as a key site for haematopoiesis by which blood cells are incessantly produced. However, recent studies have defined the endosteum as a niche for skeletal stem cells, underscoring the importance of the harmony between the inner endosteum and the outer periosteum in maintaining bone homeostasis. Fear can be a powerful catalyst for cognitive potential, or a potent agent of havoc. This descriptive (transcendental) phenomenological study aimed to understand the phenomenon of fear experienced by teachers in public and private secondary schools in Central Florida. Semi-structured interviews collected data from the purposive sample, and the data were thoroughly analyzed using Colaizzi's (1978) model. The emergent essence of the lived experience of teachers identified the phenomenon of fear as the inducement of a debilitating sense of powerlessness that diminishes self-confidence and self-efficacy, resulting in emotional, cognitive, and/or physical impairments that directly affect the metacognitive potential of teachers. …

Goal Statement: The goal of this prevention portfolio is to strengthen protective factors for adolescents in Richmond, Virginia, who have experienced violence or loss. The focus is on reducing emotional distress, strengthening resilience, and promoting healthy development among youth who have been affected by community trauma. Significant Findings: Youth in Richmond are disproportionately affected by poverty, violence, and exposure to loss, which contribute to high rates of depression, anxiety, and emotional distress. The City of Richmond Community Health Needs Assessment (2022) found that nearly 29% of youth live in poverty, while the Virginia Youth Risk Behavior Survey (2023) reported that …

Developing expertise in the practice of online tutoring is presented by peer tutors who provided support to students with synchronous sessions with the onset of COVID-19. The experiences and learning of peer tutors were probed through the use of critical incidents (Flanagan, 1954), and how weekly training meetings provided support to them, creating a collaboration among the tutors and the training manager.

Understanding women’s physical and mental well-being following childbirth is critical for informing policies on labor market equity, family support, and fertility. Using event study methods and panel data from China, we document a persistent motherhood penalty in both physical and mental health, whereas the health impacts on fathers are minimal. While mothers experience a temporary reduction in paid work hours, they face a sustained increase in unpaid domestic labor — housework and childcare — resulting in a net increase in total work time. This additional workload likely contributes to deterioration in health. Mothers are also more likely to engage in …

Background: Copy number variants (CNVs) may increase the risk for neurodevelopmental conditions. The neurobiological mechanisms that link these high-risk genetic variants to clinical phenotypes are largely unknown. An important question is whether brain abnormalities in individuals who carry CNVs are associated with their degree of penetrance.

Methods: We investigated whether increased CNV penetrance for schizophrenia and other developmental disorders was associated with variations in cortical and subcortical morphology. We pooled T1-weighted brain magnetic resonance imaging and genetic data from 22 cohorts from the ENIGMA (Enhancing Neuro Imaging Genetics through Meta Analysis)-CNV consortium. The mechanisms for the age-related increase in fatigability of the elbow flexor muscles during dynamic contractions are unknown. The purpose of this study was to determine the contribution of supraspinal and contractile mechanisms for the age-related increase in fatigability of the elbow flexor muscles. Twenty-eight young (23.2 ± 2.6 years; 14 females) and 32 older adults (72.6 ± 5.6 years; 15 females) performed 80 maximal velocity contractions at 20% of maximal isometric strength. Voluntary activation and muscle contractile properties were assessed before and immediately following the fatiguing exercise using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and electrical stimulation. Aims Heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) is a major health problem. Increasing L-type calcium channel (LTCC) activity deteriorates heart function; however, myocardial RRAD knockout (cRADΔ/Δ) instills tonic modulated LTCC current (ICa,L) that preserves healthy myocardium. Thus, we chose to challenge the dogma that enhanced trigger Ca2+ is maladaptive. The study objective was to test the hypothesis that modulated ICa,L in cRADΔ/Δ mice rescues dilated cardiomyopathy by providing tonic modulated trigger Ca2+. Background/objectives: Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) of the hand are rare, representing only 2% of all STS. The small size and benign appearance of these tumors often lead to unplanned excisions and diagnostic delay. This systematic review sought to characterize the clinical presentation, histology, treatment modalities, and oncological outcomes of hand STS.

Methods: A systematic review of PubMed and Embase was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. The protocol was registered on PROSPERO. We included studies with ≥10 patients with STS that provided data on treatment options and oncologic outcomes. We report here the development of the spectral library-based multiplex segmented selected ion monitoring (SLB-msSIM) method, a conceptually unique approach with significantly enhanced sensitivity and robustness for single-cell analysis. Significance: Pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (PNENs) are an uncommon cancer whose incidence rate has increased dramatically in recent years. Surgery is the only potentially curative treatment, which relies on both preoperative tumor localization and postoperative margin definition using histopathological examination for decision making. If pathology could be automated, valuable time and resources could be saved.

Aim: In this study, we investigate the ability of machine learning (ML) with handcrafted features, as well as deep learning, to classify label-free microscopy images of PNENs as a first step toward automated pathology of such tumors.

Recognizing and updating bacterial names is key to communication between the veterinary clinical microbiology laboratory, veterinarians, and clients. Moraxella oculi sp. nov., distinct from Moraxella bovis and Moraxella bovoculi, was isolated from a cow with infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis. Several respiratory pathogens were recognized, including Neisseria leonii sp. nov. described from rabbits, Mannheimia indoligenes sp. nov. described from cattle in Europe, and Moraxella haemolytica sp. nov. described from a goat in China. Stenotrophomonas forensis sp. nov. is a novel designation within the Stenotrophomonas maltophilia complex associated with isolates derived from horses. The 2020 standards set by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) now require the incorporation of the International Classification of Function and Patient-Centered Outcomes into professional practice. These standards can be introduced initially through simulation, but to develop a competent and culturally aware professional, outcome measures should be completed during clinical experiences under the guidance of approved preceptors. As this is a relatively new standard, many preceptors did not receive this as part of their education and may be uncomfortable integrating outcomes into their practice.
