Guide For Selecting Experimental Models To Study Dietary Fat Absorption, Andromeda M. Nauli, Ann Phan, Karen Mai, Kathleen Tran, Surya M. Nauli
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Dietary fat absorption is a complex, multi-step process involving digestion, enterocyte uptake, intracellular trafficking, re-esterification, and transport via lipoproteins into circulation. Because dietary fat absorption plays a central role in lipid homeostasis, metabolic syndrome, and fat malabsorption disorders, its study has a broad biomedical significance. However, experimental investigation of this process is technically challenging due to the short lifespan of enterocytes, the dual lymphatic and portal transport routes, and the need to trace the metabolic fate of absorbed lipids. This review summarizes and critically evaluates the major experimental systems used to study dietary fat absorption, highlighting their respective strengths, limitations, …

From Vulnerability To Robustness: A Survey Of Patch Attacks And Defenses In Computer Vision, Xinyun Liu, Ronghua Xu
From Vulnerability To Robustness: A Survey Of Patch Attacks And Defenses In Computer Vision, Xinyun Liu, Ronghua Xu
Michigan Tech Publications
Adversarial patch attacks have emerged as a powerful and practical threat to machine learning models in vision-based tasks. Unlike traditional perturbation-based adversarial attacks, which often require imperceptible changes to the entire input, patch attacks introduce localized and visible modifications that can consistently mislead deep neural networks across varying conditions. Their physical realizability makes them particularly concerning for real-world security-critical applications. In response, a growing body of research has proposed diverse defense strategies, including input preprocessing, robust model training, detection-based approaches, and certified defense mechanisms. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive review of patch-based adversarial attacks and corresponding defense techniques. …
Insect Apocalypse? Population Patterns Of Aquatic Macroinvertebrates Across North America, Analiese Kate Bauder
Insect Apocalypse? Population Patterns Of Aquatic Macroinvertebrates Across North America, Analiese Kate Bauder
Honors Thesis
There is a common idea that there is an “insect apocalypse”, that insect populations are on a drastic decline. To test this hypothesis we took data collected by the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) from 2015 to 2023 and analyzed it to create a time series model depicting the population of aquatic macroinvertebrates at 34 sites across North America (Appendix 1). NEON is an NSF funded, continental-scale observation facility designed to collect long-term open-access ecological data to better understand the complexities of Earth's ecosystems and how they are changing. From this model, we defined the slope of the change in …

Linking A Seasonal Freshwater Prey Subsidy To The Body Condition Of An Estuarine Consumer In A Subtropical Coastal River, Jordan A. Massie, Ryan J. Rezek, W. Ryan James, Rolando O. Santos, Natasha M. Viadero, Ross E. Boucek, Jennifer S. Rehage
Marine Science
Movements of fishes among habitats often correspond to shifting resource availability and can occur in response to fluctuating freshwater inflows in coastal systems. Seasonal availability of prey can provide resources that increase fitness, yet hydrologic variability can influence the movements of both consumers and prey. Shifts in the timing/magnitude of prey availability driven by climate and water management may lead to a resource mismatch, carrying consequences for growth, survival, and reproduction. Here, we examined how seasonal/interannual variation in prey biomass (sunfishes, Lepomis spp.) affects the body condition of Common Snook (Centropomus undecimalis) in Everglades National Park. Further, we investigated how …

Sounds can give rise to powerful affective experiences, both positive and negative. Misophonia is an intensely negative response to sounds such as chewing, whereas autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) and musical chills result are experiences as positive and pleasant. Anecdotally, all of these experiences occur as early as childhood, but we know relatively little about how they develop. We investigated this question longitudinally.

Hypertension and osteoporosis are highly prevalent chronic conditions that have significant implications for global health, especially in aging populations. While these conditions have traditionally been viewed as separate, emerging research suggests a strong pathophysiological link between the two. Understanding these shared mechanisms may help improve screening and guide integrated management strategies. This narrative review was conducted between January 2024 and July 2025 using PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar. The search strategy used the Boolean string: (“hypertension” OR “high blood pressure”) AND (“osteoporosis” OR “bone loss”), supplemented with pharmacologic terms (“ACE inhibitors,” “angiotensin receptor blockers,” “thiazide diuretics,” “beta-blockers”, “SERMS”, “Bisphosphonates”, “Denosumab”, …

High Phosphorus Intake: The Role Of Phosphorus And Health Outcomes Through The Lens Of High Phosphorus Additive Intake, Taigen M. Mayes
Senior Honors Theses
Phosphorus is a commonly consumed mineral in the traditional human diet and plays an essential role in human physiological functions. With the use of phosphate additives, high phosphate intake has become increasingly prevalent in recent years. Phosphate is regulated in the body by a homeostasis mechanism. A disruption to the homeostasis has a link to various pathologies such as bone health, cardiovascular disease, cancers, and kidney issues. Various studies have investigated the role of phosphate and its effects on human function. Bone health, cardiovascular disease, cancer, premature aging, dementia, and kidney disease are linked with high phosphorus intake.

Antidepressant Use In Older Age Bipolar Disorder (Oabd): Results From The Gage-Bd International Consortium, P. J. Chen, Lisa T. Eyler
Faculty Scholarship
Background Antidepressants are still commonly prescribed in bipolar disorders, despite ongoing controversy of the potential risk of inducing hypomania/mania. There is limited knowledge about the characteristics of antidepressant use in older age bipolar disorder (OABD; age ≥50) in the current literature. Aim To describe antidepressant use, sociodemographic and clinical correlates of a global sample of OABD individuals. Methods The Global Aging and Geriatric Experiments in Bipolar Disorder (GAGE-BD) consortium provided cross-sectional international data on OABD individuals ( n = 746) and younger-age bipolar disorder (YABD, age <50 years; n = 692) regarding antidepressant use. Multivariate logistic regression was employed to assess the association between AD use with demographic and clinical variables. Results Of 1252 participants, 33.1 % of OABD individuals and 38.1 % of YABD individuals were using antidepressants. In multivariable models among OABD, antidepressant use was associated with BD type II (OR = 1.61, 95 % CI: 1.09–2.38), higher depression severity (mild-to-moderate: OR = 1.86, 95 % CI: 1.13–3.06; severe: OR = 4.23, 95 % CI: 2.38–7.50), lower YMRS scores (OR = 0.93, 95 % CI: 0.89–0.97), female sex (OR = 1.37, 95 % CI: 1.00–1.89), lower education (OR = 0.61, 95 % CI: 0.43–0.86), and being unemployed (OR = 0.69, 95 % CI: 0.50–0.96). Antidepressant monotherapy was reported in 18 % of OABD users ( n = 46) and 19 % of YABD users ( n = 51). These findings suggest that both clinical severity and sociodemographic characteristics influence antidepressant prescribing in OABD. Conclusion Antidepressant use was less prevalent in OABD compared to YABD, and associated with female sex, lower education, lack of occupation, type II BD, higher depression severity and lower mania scores. In OABD, antidepressants appear to be used more commonly in contexts where they may be clinically more indicated, such as increased depression severity.

Genes influencing opioid use disorder (OUD) biology have been identified via genome-wide association studies (GWAS), gene expression, and network analyses. These discoveries provide opportunities to identifying existing compounds targeting these genes for drug repurposing studies. However, systematically integrating discovery results and identifying relevant available pharmacotherapies for OUD repurposing studies is challenging. To address this, we've constructed a framework that uses existing results and drug databases to identify candidate pharmacotherapies. For this study, two independent OUD related meta-analyses were used including a GWAS and a differential gene expression (DGE) study of post-mortem human brain. Protein-Protein Interaction (PPI) sub-networks enriched for GWAS …

Background: Follistatin is a potent regulator of various TGF-β superfamily members, including myostatin (MSTN) and activin A. Previous studies have shown that follistatin is crucial in enhancing myogenesis during acute muscle injury. The mechanism by which fibro-adipogenic progenitors (FAPs)-specific follistatin influences muscle homeostasis in obese mice remains unknown. Therefore, we investigated the physiological role of follistatin in PDGFRα-positive FAPs in the regulation of muscle homeostasis and exercise in obese mice.
Methods: A PDGFRα-specific follistatin knockout (follistatin KO) mouse model was generated using PDGFRα-GFP-CreERT2 (PDGFRα-GCE) and follistatinflox/flox mice. These mice were fed a 60% high-fat diet (HFD) for 20 weeks, followed …

The widespread availability of dietary supplements has contributed to their increased use, with over half of U.S. adults reporting regular consumption. Prior research suggests that supplement use is associated with better overall health, and regulatory legislation has been implemented to mitigate potential adverse effects. One motivation for supplement use may be self-diagnosed health issues; however, incorrect self-diagnoses could lead to inappropriate supplement consumption and potentially contribute to disordered eating patterns. This study examined whether regular supplement users are more accurate in self-identifying an eating disorder. A sample of 511 undergraduate students completed a self-report questionnaire assessing supplement use and eating …

Understanding how host plant availability influences behavior in Drosophila species provides valuable insight into ecological specialization and speciation. This study examines the effects of different host plants on the reproductive and oviposition behavior of Drosophila silvestris and Drosophila grimshawi. The primary objective of this project is to determine whether females exhibit host-plant preferences during egg-laying. A secondary aim is to assess whether sex and mating status influence host plant preference, specifically comparing male, unmated female, and mated female behavior with two host plants. To test these hypotheses, newly emerged flies were divided into three treatment groups: male-only, female-only, and mixed …
