Space And Species Interactions In Welfare Estimates For Invasive Species Policy, Stephanie Brockmann, Hongyan Zhang, Doran M. Mason, Edward S. Rutherford Nov 2021

Space And Species Interactions In Welfare Estimates For Invasive Species Policy, Stephanie Brockmann, Hongyan Zhang, Doran M. Mason, Edward S. Rutherford

Faculty Publications

Aquatic invasive species (AIS) can cause catastrophic damages to lake ecosystems. Bigheaded carp are one such species that pose a current threat to Lake Michigan. Bigheaded carp are expected to have spatially differentiated impacts on other aquatic species in the metapopulation. Policymakers must decide how much to invest in mitigation or conservation policies, if at all, by understanding how invasions impact social welfare or social wellbeing. Estimates of social welfare implications, however, may be biased if important interactions between species and space are overly simplified or aggregated out of the model. In this analysis, a bioeconomic model that links an …

Smoking And Violence: An Exploratory Study Within A Maximum Security Forensic Institution, Yvonne Lapp Cryns Nov 2021

Smoking And Violence: An Exploratory Study Within A Maximum Security Forensic Institution, Yvonne Lapp Cryns

Theses

Nicotine addiction among the mentally ill occurs at a high rate and aggressive behavior frequently occurs in forensic psychiatric facilities. Few studies focused on psychiatric forensic inpatients and their behavioral response to nicotine withdrawal. This study was an analysis of the association between nicotine and aggressive acts, reported in Special Incident Reports, before and after a smoking ban at a forensic hospital. The findings indicate a notable increase in aggressive acts in the week following implementation of a smoking ban with a parallel rise in use of seclusion and restraint. A significant decrease in self harm and a notable increase …

Expression And Purification Of Phage T7 Ejection Proteins For Cryo-Em Analysis, Nicholas A. Swanson, Ravi K Lokareddy, Fenglin Li, Chun-Feng Hou, Mikhail Pavlenok, Michael Niederweis, Gino Cingolani Nov 2021

Expression And Purification Of Phage T7 Ejection Proteins For Cryo-Em Analysis, Nicholas A. Swanson, Ravi K Lokareddy, Fenglin Li, Chun-Feng Hou, Mikhail Pavlenok, Michael Niederweis, Gino Cingolani

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

Bacteriophages of the Podoviridae family densely package their genomes into precursor capsids alongside internal virion proteins called ejection proteins. In phage T7 these proteins (gp14, gp15, and gp16) are ejected into the host envelope forming a DNA-ejectosome for genome delivery. Here, we describe the purification and characterization of recombinant gp14, gp15, and gp16. This protocol was used for high-resolution cryo-EM structure analysis of the T7 periplasmic tunnel and can be adapted to study ejection proteins from other phages. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Swanson et al.

Best Friends Forever And Family Ties: Continuity And Change In Closeness With Parents And Friends Among Australian Adolescents, Mckell A. Jorgensen-Wells Nov 2021

Best Friends Forever And Family Ties: Continuity And Change In Closeness With Parents And Friends Among Australian Adolescents, Mckell A. Jorgensen-Wells

Theses and Dissertations

During adolescence, the need for social connection increases. Yet, fostering emotional closeness in relationships becomes more complex, as the need for autonomy also increases and social environments must adapt to become conducive to these seemingly competing needs. This complexity necessitates more research on what happens to close relationships during adolescence, so parents, scholars, and practitioners are better equipped to help individuals navigate the unique social atmosphere of adolescence. The current study draws upon multi-level modeling techniques to estimate growth models of Australian adolescents' closeness to parents and closeness to friends from ages 12-17 and examine predictors of these trajectories. Findings …

The First Troglobitic Scorpions From Hispaniola, Greater Antilles: Two New Species Of Cazierius Francke, 1978 (Scorpiones: Diplocentridae), Rolando Teruel, Solanlly Carrero Jiménez, Gabriel De Los Santos

Euscorpius

Two new species of the Greater Antillean endemic scorpion genus Cazierius Francke, 1978, are herein described from the island of Hispaniola. They were found inside isolate limestone caves in the Dominican Republic and are fully troglomorphic, thus, apparently being strict troglobites that represent the first ever documented for this genus. The present additions raise the number of Hispaniolan species of both Cazierius and the family Diplocentridae Karsch, 1880, to five and ten, respectively.

Blue Crab In The New York Area As An Indicator For Climate Change, Adelle Molina Nov 2021

Blue Crab In The New York Area As An Indicator For Climate Change, Adelle Molina

Sustainability Seminar Series

In the northeast US, winters are getting warmer, shorter, and milder due to climate change. It is hypothesized that populations of some species near their northern range limit may experience elevated population growth rates owing to lower mortality in winter, higher growth rates in summer, and the synergistic relationship between these physiological processes. Blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus) in New York estuaries are close to their northern range edge and are potentially climate “winners” in this region. To provide advice to managers, we monitored blue crab populations in a coastal, lagoonal estuary and used a combined modeling approach to simulate the …

Race And Reasonable Suspicion, Ric Simmons Nov 2021

Race And Reasonable Suspicion, Ric Simmons

Florida Law Review

The current political moment requires society to rethink the ways that race impacts policing. Many of the solutions will be political in nature, but legal reform is necessary as well. Law enforcement officers have a long history of considering a suspect’s race when conducting criminal investigations. The civil rights movement and the progressive criminal justice decisions of the Warren Court mitigated the explicit use of race as a factor, but there is ample evidence that many modern police officers still openly or implicitly use race to guide their investigative decisions.

This Article examines and critiques how courts have historically analyzed …

Expanding Lgbt, Marie-Amélie George Nov 2021

Expanding Lgbt, Marie-Amélie George

Florida Law Review

In many circles, “LGBT” is an antiquated acronym that excludes many of the individuals that the movement is supposed to serve. “LGBTQ,” “LGBTQIA,” and other variations of the acronym have become ever more pervasive as nonbinary, intersex, and asexual individuals have become increasingly visible. The LGBT initials that once signaled solidarity and intersection are now appearing limited because they highlight only certain subgroups.

Although many movement organizations have adopted a more expansive formulation of LGBT, national legal rights organizations have limited their agendas to LGBT issues. Until recently, they devoted the bulk of their efforts to gay and lesbian concerns …

Male Same-Sex "Horseplay": The Epicenter Of Sexual Harassment?, Kimberly D. Bailey Nov 2021

Male Same-Sex "Horseplay": The Epicenter Of Sexual Harassment?, Kimberly D. Bailey

Florida Law Review

In Oncale v. Sundowner Offshore Services, Inc., the U.S. Supreme Court recognized same-sex sexual harassment as a cognizable claim of sex discrimination under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. At the time, many scholars found this recognition to be significant and important, but some also argued that the Court provided an incomplete analysis regarding the meaning of discrimination “because of sex.” Specifically, some scholars argue that the Court’s opinion reinforces the sexual desire paradigm in the analysis of sexual harassment cases. Building upon this critique, this Article focuses specifically on the harassment of men who generally …

Development And Validation Of A Survey Instrument Targeting Teachers’ Perceptions Of The Scope Of Engineering, Jacob Pleasants Nov 2021

Development And Validation Of A Survey Instrument Targeting Teachers’ Perceptions Of The Scope Of Engineering, Jacob Pleasants

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

Around the world, pre-college teachers are increasingly being called upon to address engineering, often as part of science instruction. Teachers are typically tasked with engaging students in authentic engineering design activities to promote students’ development of design practices while deepening their knowledge of relevant science concepts. Planning and implementing engineering experiences that authentically reflect the field require that teachers hold accurate perceptions of what engineering is, how it works, and how it is related to yet distinct from science. As teacher education and research efforts in this area grow, there is a need for high-quality instruments that elicit key aspects …

Advances In Rhizobial Research – Progress Priorities In Temperate Areas, Angela Sessitsch Nov 2021

Advances In Rhizobial Research – Progress Priorities In Temperate Areas, Angela Sessitsch

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Rhizobia are well known for their capacity to establish a symbiosis with legumes. During this symbiosis the bacteria inhabit root nodules where they reduce atmospheric nitrogen and make it available to the plant. Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) is an important source of nitrogen and the various legume crops and pasture species often fix as much as 200-300 kg nitrogen per hectare (Peoples et al., 1995). Globally, symbiotic nitrogen fixation has been estimated to amount to at least 70 million metric tons of nitrogen per year (Brockwell et al., 1995). Furthermore, in many cases nitrogen fertilizers are not efficiently used by …

The Legume – Rhizobia Symbiosis. Does It Vary For The Tropics Relative To The Mediterranean Basin?, J. G. Howieson, A. Mcinnes Nov 2021

The Legume – Rhizobia Symbiosis. Does It Vary For The Tropics Relative To The Mediterranean Basin?, J. G. Howieson, A. Mcinnes

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Symbiotic N fixation from legumes is one of the most important biological processes on the planet. It currently provides the majority of the N requirement in agriculture, yet will have to double if cereal crop production is to meet world demand by 2020 (Kennedy and Cocking 1997). To effectively harness the value of biological N fixation from legumes we need to more fully understand G2 x E; where G refers to the genotypes of both the legume (Gl) and its microsymbiont (rhizobia; Gr), and E refers to the edaphic environment in which the symbiosis is …

Advances In Forage Legumes: Shrub Legumes, M. H. Shelton Nov 2021

Advances In Forage Legumes: Shrub Legumes, M. H. Shelton

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Forage tree legumes benefit agriculture through their multi-purpose contributions to livestock feeding, to productivity of farming systems, and to protection of the environment.

Of the several hundred forage tree legume species regarded as having potential for forage only c. twenty are in common use. These are listed together with their agroecological range and tolerance of adverse environments including acid soils, cool temperatures, low rainfall, poor drainage and high salinity. The value of many species to ruminants is limited due to low nutritive value arising from low protein availability and low acceptability caused principally by high condensed tannin content. Only 10 …

Alfalfa, J. H. Bouton Nov 2021

Alfalfa, J. H. Bouton

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Cultivated alfalfa or lucerne (Medicago sativa spp. sativa) is the most important forage legume in the world with approximately 32 million hectares cultivated mainly in the temperate regions of both the northern and southern hemispheres. Intensive research has been conducted on the management and physiology of the crop and a major seed industry has developed world wide. Since insect and disease pests are numerous in alfalfa, development of cultivars with the proper fall dormancy and a broad genetic base for pest resistance has been pursued in order to provide increased adaptation, persistence, and yield. There has been a …

Carbon And Nitrogen Isotopic Discrimination In Alfalfa For High Yield And Quality Forage, W. S. Oliveira, P. P. A. Oliveira, M. Corsi, S. M. Tsai Nov 2021

Carbon And Nitrogen Isotopic Discrimination In Alfalfa For High Yield And Quality Forage, W. S. Oliveira, P. P. A. Oliveira, M. Corsi, S. M. Tsai

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Biological nitrogen fixation and assimilation of CO2 can be indirectly monitored in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) through the variation of the stable N and C isotopes in the plant (Δ values). Such measurements result in a simple, non-destructive and reliable method for identification of alfalfa cultivars of high yield and nutritional quality. A program for selection of 12 alfalfa cultivars under field and controlled conditions (lysimeters) included determination of biomass and N accumulation. Under controlled conditions yields ranged from 1.77 to 2.47 ton/ha/month (Pioneer 5312 and WL-605) and N2-fixed varied from 77.43 to 84.01% for total N (Brazilian …

Power Reclaimed And Given: Female Passivity And Agency In Harris, Brand, And Smith, Annika Northrop Nov 2021

Power Reclaimed And Given: Female Passivity And Agency In Harris, Brand, And Smith, Annika Northrop

Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research

The paper “Power Reclaimed and Given: Female Passivity and Agency in Harris, Brand, and Smith” explores representations of women in art in Claire Harris’ “After Image,” Dionne Brand’s “Blues Spiritual for Mammy Prater,” and Ali Smith’s How to be both. Harris’ poem depicts a woman, who is the subject of a male photographer’s photos and who has been objectified and relegated to passivity by the photographer, in the active process of reclaiming the power to create her own identity. Brand’s poem shows Mammy Prater as a woman who, although formerly subjugated and abused, has already reclaimed that power; in …

Effects Of Freshwater Input On Nutrient Loading, Toxic Cyanobacteria Bloom Development And Cyanotoxin Production In Lake Pontchartrain Estuary, Louisiana, Callie L. Snow Nov 2021

Effects Of Freshwater Input On Nutrient Loading, Toxic Cyanobacteria Bloom Development And Cyanotoxin Production In Lake Pontchartrain Estuary, Louisiana, Callie L. Snow

LSU Master's Theses

Estuaries in the northern Gulf of Mexico (GoM) are undergoing profound alterations due to changes in climate and implementation of coastal restoration activities and these may lead to the increasing frequency of harmful algal blooms (HABs). The introduction of large volumes of nutrient-rich, fresh Mississippi River water into nutrient-poor Lake Pontchartrain Estuary is known to substantially change the chemistry and ecology of the estuary, and warm temperatures paired with the persistent nutrient loading into the estuary supports the proliferation of potentially toxic cyanobacteria blooms (CyanoHABs). Throughout 2019, a long-term opening of the Bonnet Carré Spillway (BCS), initially from February to …

The principal micronutrient found in hemp microgreens was iron (Fe), followed by manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), boron (B), and copper (Cu). Hemp microgreens were similar to other commonly grown microgreen species in minerals except for P and Mg, where they could potentially be an excellent source, and Zn, where they fell below previously reported amounts. The …

Response Of Roseau Cane (Phragmites Australis) To Two Biotic Stresses: Hyalopterus Pruni And Bipolaris Yamadae, Heather E. Cizek Nov 2021

Response Of Roseau Cane (Phragmites Australis) To Two Biotic Stresses: Hyalopterus Pruni And Bipolaris Yamadae, Heather E. Cizek

LSU Master's Theses

Roseau cane (Phragmites australis) is considered an invasive plant because of its ability to replace native plant species. However, in Louisiana it plays an important role protecting coastal infrastructure and being part of the marsh ecosystem in the lower Mississippi River Delta. In recent years, Roseau cane has been affected by a die-off, a problem that has also been reported in some European countries. Possible biotic and abiotic factors that have been associated with the die-off include scale insects, climate change, pollution, salinity levels, and pathogens.

In this research, the individual and combined effect of a foliar disease …

3-Dimensional Structural Determination Of Epidermal Growth Factor-Like Repeat 27 From Mouse Notch1 Using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, Justin Grennell

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

NOTCH1 has been associated with a variety of human ailments, such as cancer and heart disease. NOTCH1 is a transmembrane protein that contains 36 epidermal growth factor-like (EGF) repeats, which facilitate cell signaling by binding proteins on neighboring cells. Each repeat contains about 40 amino acids and has to be folded in a specific manner to function properly. The amino acid sequence, carbohydrate pattern, and calcium-binding sites of EGF-like repeats vary, but the pattern along the 36-repeat chain is conserved. The Abruptex region (EGF24-29) of NOTCH1 is a highly glycosylated (having undergone sugar addition) and flexible region, which gained its …

There has been great interest in genetic risk prediction using risk scores in recent years, however, the utility of scores developed in European populations and later applied to non-European populations has not been successful. The goal of this study was to create a methylation risk score (MRS) for metabolic syndrome (MetS), demonstrating the utility of MRS across race groups using cross-sectional data from the Hypertension Genetic Epidemiology Network (HyperGEN, N = 614 African Americans (AA)) and the Genetics of Lipid Lowering Drugs and Diet Network (GOLDN, N = 995 European Americans (EA)). To demonstrate this, we first selected cytosine-guanine dinucleotides …

Predicting Thermal Responses Of An Arctic Lake To Whole-Lake Warming Manipulation, Qunhui Zhang, Jiming Jin, Phaedra Budy, Sarah E. Null, Xiaochun Wang, Casey A. Pennock Nov 2021

Predicting Thermal Responses Of An Arctic Lake To Whole-Lake Warming Manipulation, Qunhui Zhang, Jiming Jin, Phaedra Budy, Sarah E. Null, Xiaochun Wang, Casey A. Pennock

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

We investigated how lake thermal processes responded to whole lake warming manipulation in an arctic lake through observations and numerical modeling. The warming manipulation was conducted by artificially heating the epilimnion as a proxy for climate warming. We performed numerical modeling with an improved lake scheme based on the Community Land Model (CLM). We simulated a control run (CTL) without warming and a warming manipulation simulation (WARM). Results indicated WARM accurately captured observed temperatures where water stratification was extended in time, and water stability was strengthened. Two additional sensitivity tests with different warming onset dates and of the same warming …
