Efficacy Of Spirulina (Arthrospira Platensis) Utilization In Broiler Diets, Garrett James Mullenix Dec 2021

Efficacy Of Spirulina (Arthrospira Platensis) Utilization In Broiler Diets, Garrett James Mullenix

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) is a cyanobacteria microalgae that has potential as an animal feed ingredient. Five experiments were conducted to further assess its ability to serve as a protein source in broiler diets. Experiment 1 consisted of an amino acid digestibility and apparent metabolizable energy assay. The results indicated that the standardized ileal amino acid levels of spirulina are comparable with typical soybean meal. Experiment 2 assessed the performance and processing parameters of broilers fed 10% spirulina in low crude protein diets, using published digestibility coefficients. Spirulina inclusion improved footpad quality and increased redness and yellowness of the breast, skin …

Divergent Selection For Water Conversion Ratio In Broiler Populations, Joseph Hiltz Dec 2021

Divergent Selection For Water Conversion Ratio In Broiler Populations, Joseph Hiltz

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Water scarcity is a global reality and with the anticipated population growth, freshwater resources will be further strained to meet both human needs and agriculture applications. To ensure a water sustainable and food secure future, all aspects of agriculture must become more efficient. Two strategies were explored. The potential of improving water efficiency in broilers was examined. The first strategy was to develop a more efficient and accurate method for measuring water consumption/inputs in agriculture. To date, water measuring technology has lacked the necessary sophistication to assure accuracy and repeatability of low flow water usage.

After establishing a low flow …

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Chapter 1: COFs (covalent organic frameworks) are a new type of microporous crystalline polymer connected by organic units via strong covalent bonds. Due to their well-defined crystalline structures and excellent chemical and thermal stabilities, COF materials are considered promising candidates in applications such as gas adsorption, catalysis, and energy storage.Chapter 2: A new covalent organic framework (COF) based on imine bonds was assembled from 2-(4-formylphenyl)-5-formylpyridine and 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)pyrene, which showed an interesting dual-pore structure with high crystallinity. Postmetallation of the COF with Pt occurred selectively at the N donor (imine and pyridyl) in the larger pores. The metalated COF served as …

Evaluation Of Nitrous Oxide Emissions From Furrow-Irrigated Rice On A Silt-Loam Soil In Arkansas, Jordan M. Slayden Dec 2021

Evaluation Of Nitrous Oxide Emissions From Furrow-Irrigated Rice On A Silt-Loam Soil In Arkansas, Jordan M. Slayden

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As the number one rice (Oryza sativa)-producing state in the United States, Arkansas also ranks fourth as the largest user of groundwater. Recently, due to the development of drought- resistant hybrid cultivars, the furrow-irrigated rice production system has become an increasingly popular alternative to traditional flood-irrigated production with respect to conserving groundwater and maintaining yield. However, other environmental parameters, like greenhouse gas emissions, specifically nitrous oxide (N2O), have yet to be evaluated under furrow-irrigated rice. The objectives of this study were to i) evaluate the effects of site position (i.e., up-, mid-, and down-slope) and tillage treatment [i.e., conventional tillage …

Body Mass And Body Condition Variation Of Mallards (Anas Platyrhynchos) Within And Among Winters Within The Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley, John Thompson Veon Dec 2021

Body Mass And Body Condition Variation Of Mallards (Anas Platyrhynchos) Within And Among Winters Within The Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley, John Thompson Veon

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Most North American waterfowl overwinter in southern North America before migrating back to breeding grounds in the northern US and Canada. These species face the challenge of needing to maintain or increase their body mass during an environmentally difficult winter period. Successful body mass maintenance during the winter period has major ramifications not only for their winter survival but for their fitness across the entire year. Recent research in Europe and the western United States suggests that the body mass of mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) has increased from the late 1960s to early 2000s. However, the factors responsible for increases in …

Genome-Wide Analyses Of Genomic Variation Regulating Differential Stress Responses In Japanese Quail, Steven Anthony Shumaker Dec 2021

Genome-Wide Analyses Of Genomic Variation Regulating Differential Stress Responses In Japanese Quail, Steven Anthony Shumaker

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As consumer demands for poultry grow, producers work to improve bird productivity in both meat and egg production. This endeavor is multifaceted, as many different factors play a part in influencing the productivity of birds, including environmental conditions, overall health, and genetic potential. One aspect controlled for in all aspects of poultry production optimization is stress management. Mitigation of stress is of primary concern to producers, as improper stress management can have many deleterious effects on chickens. Stress management requires an understanding of poultry stress responses and their physiological mechanisms, which can be more deeply understood through genomic analysis. Chapter …

Does Self-Reference In Concept Mapping Influence Transfer?, Daniel A. Parker Dec 2021

Does Self-Reference In Concept Mapping Influence Transfer?, Daniel A. Parker

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Concept maps are a popular learning activity that have successfully demonstrated student learning outcomes. Research suggests that concept mapping has a positive effect on recognition, recall, and transfer. Likewise, researchers in cognitive psychology have shown the value of referencing oneself with a concept. Known as the self-reference effect, learners who connect their experiences or traits with new knowledge are more likely to remember that knowledge than if they used other mnemonic devices. Previous research suggests that integrating self-reference in concept mapping may improve recall. However, to date, no study has investigated the influence of this combination on higher order learning …

Two-Dimensional Black Phosphorus For Terahertz Emission And Near-Field Radiative Heat Transfer, Mahmudul Hasan Doha Dec 2021

Two-Dimensional Black Phosphorus For Terahertz Emission And Near-Field Radiative Heat Transfer, Mahmudul Hasan Doha

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The main focus of this work is to investigate two potential optical and optoelectronic applications of black phosphorus (BP): the near-field radiative heat transfer in plasmonic heterostructures with graphene and terahertz emission from multi-layer BP photoconductive antennas. When the separation distance between graphene-black phosphorene is much smaller than or comparable to the thermal wavelength at different temperatures, a near-field radiation heat transfer breaks the Planck blackbody limit. The magnitude of the near-field radiation enhancement acutely depends on the gate voltage, doping, and vacuum gap of the graphene and BP pair. The strong near-field radiation heat transfer enhancement of the specific …

Understanding The Chemical Structures Of Polydopamine, Deborah Takyibea Okyere Dec 2021

Understanding The Chemical Structures Of Polydopamine, Deborah Takyibea Okyere

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Polydopamine (PDA) is described as a bioinspired polymer produced by a method involving the chemical oxidation of dopamine in a pH-dependent medium. It has been used for the functionalization of nanomaterials in diverse applications including drug delivery and biosensing because of its strong adhesiveness, functionality is easily modified, and biocompatibility with mammalian cells and tissues. The polymerization process is believed to be initiated by the autoxidation of dopamine to dopaminequinone. However, the repeating units, as well as the final structure of PDA, are not well understood. Hence, this work focuses on the characterizations of the PDA structures during formation and …

Optimization Of Nitrogen Removal Rate In One-Stage Reactor Through Partial Nitrification Anammox Process During Direct Treatment Of Poultry Litter Wastewater, Yiting Xiao Dec 2021

Optimization Of Nitrogen Removal Rate In One-Stage Reactor Through Partial Nitrification Anammox Process During Direct Treatment Of Poultry Litter Wastewater, Yiting Xiao

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Anammox is an increasingly common process used for the treatment of reject water and even mainstream wastewater due to its low oxygen demand. However, anammox is not commonly utilized in the direct treatment of poultry litter because of the high organic content, which would inhibit the anammox process. Thus, this project is aimed at optimizing the nitrogen removal rate through partial nitrification anammox process (PN/A) to treat synthetic poultry litter wastewater. Nitrogen removal efficiencies will therefore be improved through optimizing the combination of three operating parameters including hydraulic retention time (HRT), dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration, and carbon to nitrogen (C/N) …

In addition, this study concludes with a discussion surrounding the additional challenges associated with parenting the exceptional, frameworks for gifted parent support systems, as well …

Adapting Animals: Nineteenth-Century British Literature, Science, And Media, Kristen Layne Figgins Dec 2021

Adapting Animals: Nineteenth-Century British Literature, Science, And Media, Kristen Layne Figgins

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the nineteenth century, Charles Darwin and other proponents of evolutionary theory provided a theoretical framework for discussing the question of humanity’s place in the world. These nascent theories emphasized the shared animal nature of humans and the nonhuman creatures who had once occupied a distinctly lower place on the chain of being. My dissertation addresses the question of how nineteenth-century scientific attitudes about animals were reflected in the literature of the period. By examining culture-texts from the nineteenth century, it is clear that literature was an active participant in extending scientific knowledge, often by playing with the blending categorical …

Post-Fire Tree Mortality And Regeneration Patterns As Proxies Of Conifer Forest Resilience, Sebastian Upton Busby Dec 2021

Post-Fire Tree Mortality And Regeneration Patterns As Proxies Of Conifer Forest Resilience, Sebastian Upton Busby

Dissertations and Theses

Shifting wildfire patterns and climate conditions, magnified by anthropogenic climate change, are threatening the resilience of conifer forests in North America and more specifically, the western US. If native conifer species are functionally maladapted to novel fire patterns and post-fire climate conditions, large-scale shifts in conifer forest structure, composition, and extent may occur as warming intensifies. Forest resilience in the context of fire and climate can be understood and quantified by the survival of trees through fire events and success of trees to regenerate post-fire and maintain population levels. In this dissertation, I use field observations and remote sensing to …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Runs of homozygosity (ROH) occur when offspring inherit haplotypes that are identical by descent from each parent. Length distributions of ROH are informative about population history; specifically, the probability of inbreeding mediated by mating system and/or population demography. Here, we investigated whether variation in killer whale (Orcinus orca) demographic history is reflected in genome-wide heterozygosity and ROH length distributions, using a global data set of 26 genomes representative of geographic and ecotypic variation in this species, and two F1 admixed individuals with Pacific-Atlantic parentage. We first reconstructed demographic history for each population as changes in effective population size through time …

A Multigrid Homotopy Method For Computing Eigenfunctions Of Differential Operators With Two-Dimensional Heterogeneity, Chelsea Drum Dec 2021

A Multigrid Homotopy Method For Computing Eigenfunctions Of Differential Operators With Two-Dimensional Heterogeneity, Chelsea Drum

Master's Theses

In this thesis, we develop an accurate algorithm for computing the smallest eigenvalues of the self-adjoint spatial differential operator for the two-dimensional heat equation with a piecewise constant coefficient and periodic boundary conditions. The piecewise constant coefficient is created by the discontinuity of the diffusivity coefficient across the interfaces between two or more heterogeneous materials. Our method involves the combination of the well-known Inverse Iteration with a multigrid homotopy.

Fisheries Research Reports

Recreational fishing is a popular activity in Western Australia, occurring throughout the state from private and charter boats, and from a variety of natural and man-made structures along the shore. Ongoing monitoring of the shore-based recreational fishery is essential to assist with monitoring, management evaluation and stock assessments for nearshore species. Especially for species such as Australian Herring and Southern Garfish who were the focus of recent management changes in 2015 (reduction of bag limit from 30 to 12) and 2017 (closure of Perth Metropolitan waters), respectively. An on-site roving creel survey to collect effort and catch data from shore …

Insights Into The Role And Regulation Of The Mitochondrial Unfolded Protein Response During Pathogen Infection, Mohammed Adnan Qureshi Dec 2021

Insights Into The Role And Regulation Of The Mitochondrial Unfolded Protein Response During Pathogen Infection, Mohammed Adnan Qureshi

Biology Dissertations - Archive

Mitochondria are essential cellular organelles known for their role in energy production, apoptosis, aging, calcium signaling and others. Due to their essential nature, mitochondria are often under attack by numerous pathogens as a means to promote their infection. Consequently, mitochondrial function is often perturbed during infection, a phenomenon that must be mitigated in order for the host to survive. Cells employ various tactics to repair damaged mitochondria during stresses such as pathogenic infection. One way of countering mitochondrial stress is through the recovery mechanism known as the mitochondrial unfolded protein response (UPRmt). The UPRmt supports mitochondrial recovery by promoting mitochondrial …

Livelihood And Happiness In A Resource (Natural And Cultural)-Rich Rural Municipality In The Philippines, Rosalina Palanca-Tan, Sheila Bayog

Economics Department Faculty Publications

This paper looks at the economic and welfare conditions of residents in Lake Sebu, a largely rural but natural and cultural resource-rich municipality in Southern Mindanao in the Philippines. Two notions of welfare are used in the study: economic welfare, measured in terms of household income and vulnerability to hunger; and social welfare, measured in terms of self-reported happiness. The study uses primary data collected through a household survey and analyzed with statistical and econometric procedures (tests of difference between sub-populations; and ordinary least squares, binary probit, and ordered logistic regressions). The results suggest mixed implications of abundant natural and …

Preclinical Development Of Epicertin, A Novel Biotherapeutic For The Treatment Of Ulcerative Colitis., Micaela Ann Reeves Dec 2021

Preclinical Development Of Epicertin, A Novel Biotherapeutic For The Treatment Of Ulcerative Colitis., Micaela Ann Reeves

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Epicertin (EPT) is a recombinant variant of the cholera toxin B subunit with a C-terminal KDEL endoplasmic retention motif. Previously, orally administered EPT demonstrated mucosal healing activity in acute and chronic dextran sulfate sodium colitis models, indicating its therapeutic potential for ulcerative colitis (UC) treatment. However, oral dosing with EPT requires neutralization of gastric acid prior to administration, hindering its facile application in the treatment of chronic diseases like UC. One solution to this issue is that EPT may also be administered intracolonically without losing efficacy. This work describes the determination of a target intracolonic dose of EPT for future …

Pyridine Nucleotide Redox Potential In Coronary Smooth Muscle Couples Myocardial Blood Flow To Cardiac Metabolism., Marc Matthew Dwenger Dec 2021

Pyridine Nucleotide Redox Potential In Coronary Smooth Muscle Couples Myocardial Blood Flow To Cardiac Metabolism., Marc Matthew Dwenger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The maintenance of myocardial oxygen supply during stress is essential for sustaining cardiac health. Enhancement of coronary blood flow upon increases in myocardial oxygen demand (i.e., hyperemia) relies on regulation of voltage-gated K+ (Kv) channels by their intracellular β subunits (i.e., Kvβ proteins). Considering that, Kvβ proteins are aldo-keto reductases (AKRs) and regulate Kv channel gating, we tested the hypothesis that elevation of myocardial oxygen demand modifies intracellular NAD(H) in arterial myocytes. Furthermore, we tested whether the resultant change in the redox state of the pyridine nucleotide pool directly regulates coronary Kv1 channel activity. High-resolution imaging mass spectrometry and …

Investigations Of Potential Mechanisms Underlying Spinal Cord Injury-Induced Polyuria., Jason H. Gumbel Dec 2021

Investigations Of Potential Mechanisms Underlying Spinal Cord Injury-Induced Polyuria., Jason H. Gumbel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Spinal cord injury (SCI) results in neurological impairments including motor, sensory, and autonomic dysfunction. These neurological deficits result in a litany of complications apart from muscular paralysis, including bladder, bowel, cardiovascular, and sexual function. SCI-induced polyuria (the overproduction/passage of urine) remains understudied, and therefore mechanisms behind it are largely unknown and require extensive investigation for potential targeted therapies to improve quality of life. The objective of this dissertation was to investigate potential mechanisms of SCI-induced polyuria and explore potential therapies to improve quality of life in the SCI population. Metabolic cages, Western blot, enzyme-linked immunoassay, and immunostaining were first used …

Exploring Service Provider Perspectives On Facilitators And Barriers To Needle Exchange Program Participation By Females Who Inject Drugs., Tammi Alvey Thomas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As the opioid epidemic lingers on across the country, many areas have set up harm reduction strategies such as needle exchange programs (NEPs) to combat the long-term consequences of injection drug use (IDU). Males and females face a plethora of health issues associated with injection drug use such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C. While males comprise the largest portion of the injection drug use population, most research is gender neutral, which makes it difficult to discern issues specifically related to females inhibiting our ability to design interventions and procedures targeted to address their needs. Females require varying …

Impact Of Pank1 Deletion On Mitochondrial Acetylation And Cardiac Function During Pressure Overload., Timothy N. Audam Dec 2021

Impact Of Pank1 Deletion On Mitochondrial Acetylation And Cardiac Function During Pressure Overload., Timothy N. Audam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent studies have associated elevated protein acetylation levels with heart failure in humans. Although mechanisms promoting elevated acetylation levels are not fully known, excess acetyl-CoA may drive enzyme-independent acetylation of cardiac proteins. Accumulation of acetyl-CoA depends on the availability of sufficient CoA, whose production is regulated by pantothenate kinases in the CoA biosynthetic pathway. We show that cardiac proteins are hyperacetylated during heart failure in humans and tested in mice whether limiting CoA abundance would improve ventricular remodeling during pressure overload-induced hypertrophy. We limited cardiac CoA levels by deleting the rate-limiting enzyme in CoA biosynthesis, Pank1 (one of three PANK-encoding …

Assessing The Role Of Arsenic Exposure And Mirna-186 In Skin Tumorigenesis And Chromosomal Instability., Angeliki Lykoudi Dec 2021

Assessing The Role Of Arsenic Exposure And Mirna-186 In Skin Tumorigenesis And Chromosomal Instability., Angeliki Lykoudi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Chronic arsenic exposure through drinking water is a global health issue, affecting more than 200 million people. Arsenic is a group I human carcinogen and causes chromosomal instability (CIN). Arsenic exposure is the second most cause of skin cancer after UV radiation. MiR-186 is overexpressed in arsenic-induced squamous cell carcinoma relative to premalignant hyperkeratosis. Predicted targets of miR-186 are cell cycle regulators. Thus, we hypothesize that miR-186 overexpression drives malignant transformation of HaCaT cells by induction of CIN. Stable clones of HaCaT transfected with pEP-miR-186 expression vector or empty vector were maintained under puromycin selection were exposed to 0 or …

Characterizing The Role Of Macrophages In Cisplatin-Induced Kidney Injury And Progression To Chronic Kidney Disease., Sophia M. Sears Dec 2021

Characterizing The Role Of Macrophages In Cisplatin-Induced Kidney Injury And Progression To Chronic Kidney Disease., Sophia M. Sears

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cisplatin is a commonly used chemotherapeutic for treatment of many solid-organ cancers. Unfortunately, 30% of patients treated with cisplatin develop acute kidney injury (AKI), and even patients who do not develop AKI are at risk for long term declines in kidney function and development of chronic kidney disease (CKD). While traditional rodent toxicity studies have utilized a single, lethal dose of cisplatin, new models of cisplatin-induced kidney injury have revealed that repeated, low doses of cisplatin lead to development of kidney fibrosis. This model can be used to examine AKI-to-CKD transition processes. C57BL/6 mice are one of the most used …

Towards Long Term Colloid Suspension In A Vertically Rotated System., Md Mahmudur Rahman Dec 2021

Towards Long Term Colloid Suspension In A Vertically Rotated System., Md Mahmudur Rahman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Within a colloidal suspension gravity may compromise the observation of governing physical interactions, especially those that are weak and/or take significant time to develop. Conducting the experiment in a long-term microgravity environment is a viable option to negate gravitational effects, though significant resources are required to do so. While it may not be possible to simulate long-term microgravity terrestrially, particles can resist quick sedimentation in a confined suspension system rotating vertically with appropriate rotation speed. The goal of the investigation is to demonstrate the existence of long-term particle suspension regime for a certain colloidal suspension while characterizing colloidal behavior due …

The Role Of Sphingolipids In Aki And The Progression To Ckd: Potential Therapuetic Targets., Nicholas A. Hoffman Dec 2021

The Role Of Sphingolipids In Aki And The Progression To Ckd: Potential Therapuetic Targets., Nicholas A. Hoffman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) is most simply defined as a rapid decline in kidney function over a period of hours to days. There is currently a lack of effective treatment options for patients with AKI, highlighting the need to identify new therapeutic targets. Sphingolipids play a number of roles in different models of AKI, suggesting they could be promising future targets for treating kidney injury. Specifically, sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) and its receptors (S1PRs) have been implicated in numerous inflammatory disorders and models of AKI. The purpose of this review is to better characterize the role of S1P receptors in models of …
