Polymeric Nanofibers Supported Metal Oxides For Electrochemical Energy Storage Devices, Rutul Patel
Polymeric Nanofibers Supported Metal Oxides For Electrochemical Energy Storage Devices, Rutul Patel
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
With increasing demand for energy, there is an increased need to find effective ways to store the available energy to sustain current and future generations. Thus, the research investigates whether polymetric nanofibers support metal oxide are a good solution to store energy. The materials used for synthesis includes N-dimethylformamide, nickel nitrate, cobalt nitrate and polyacrylonitrile.
These fibers are developed three phases. First, a homogenous mixture is prepared, followed by electrospinning of the mixture. Next, calcination of the prepared nanofibers was done to generate the 1D nanofibers embedded with metal oxides. The samples are primarily tested for supercapacitor applications, hydrogen evolution …

BACKGROUND: The prognosis of patients with early relapsed or refractory large B-cell lymphoma after the receipt of first-line chemoimmunotherapy is poor.
METHODS: In this international, phase 3 trial, we randomly assigned, in a 1:1 ratio, patients with large B-cell lymphoma that was refractory to or had relapsed no more than 12 months after first-line chemoimmunotherapy to receive axicabtagene ciloleucel (axi-cel, an autologous anti-CD19 chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy) or standard care (two or three cycles of investigator-selected, protocol-defined chemoimmunotherapy, followed by high-dose chemotherapy with autologous stem-cell transplantation in patients with a response to the chemoimmunotherapy). The primary end point was …

The thermal shift assay (TSA)—also known as differential scanning fluorimetry (DSF), thermofluor, and Tm shift—is one of the most popular biophysical screening techniques used in fragment-based ligand discovery (FBLD) to detect protein–ligand interactions. By comparing the thermal stability of a target protein in the presence and absence of a ligand, potential binders can be identified. The technique is easy to set up, has low protein consumption, and can be run on most real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) instruments. While data analysis is straightforward in principle, it becomes cumbersome and time-consuming when the screens involve multiple 96- or 384-well plates. There …

An Assessment Of Grass Regeneration Nurseries At The Western Regional Plant Introduction Station, 1994-1997, V. L. Bradley, R. C. Johnson
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The Western Regional Plant Introduction Station (WRPIS), Pullman, WA, USA, maintains over 17,000 accessions of forage and turf grasses that are mostly wind cross-pollinated and highly heterogenic. Regeneration procedures have been refined over the past nine years to include improved isolation distance and increased plant populations for regeneration. The grass regeneration nurseries planted from 1994 through 1997 were evaluated using data recorded in the Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRIN) and it was found that approximately 78% of the regenerations were successful. Reasons for failures were contributed to inadequate plant number, presence of disease, seed shattering, and unsuitable growing environment. Several …

Assessment Of Ensilability Of Six Tropical Grasses Using Three Different Approaches, B. Zierenberg, K. Friedel, A. Glatzle, A. Chudy
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The preparation of well-preserved silages is considered increasingly important in the tropics and subtropics. In these regions silage production played a minor role in the past, as ensilability of tropical grasses is generally considered poor. In this study ensilability of six tropical grasses grown in the Paraguayan Chaco Boreal (Panicum maximum cv. Gatton, Cynodon plectostachyus, Cynodon sp. cv. Tifton 85, Digitaria eriantha var. pentzii, Panicum maximum cv. Tanzania and Digitaria milanjiana) was assessed in three different ways: (1) The chemical determination of the ratio between water soluble carbohydrates (WSC) and buffer capacity (BC), (2) the biological …

Fermentation Quality Of Phasey Bean And Guineagrass Silages, Y. Imura, T. Namihira, Yasuhiro Kawamoto
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Silages were made from guineagrass (Panicum maximum Jacq. var. maximum) and phasey bean (Macroptilium lathyroides (L.) Urb.) at three-growth stages. The silages were investigated in relation fermentation quality. Phasey bean silage showed a better fermentation quality than guineagrass silage. The latic acid to total acid ratio of phasey bean silage was higher than 500g/kg DM, and the volatile basic nitrogen to total nitrogen ratio was lower than 100g/kg. It is concluded that phasey bean is an unique legume suitable for good silage fermentation.

SMU Data Science Review
Breast cancer is prevalent among women in the United States. Breast cancer screening is standard but requires a radiologist to review screening images to make a diagnosis. Diagnosis through the traditional screening method of mammography currently has an accuracy of about 78% for women of all ages and demographics. A more recent and precise technique called Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT) has shown to be more promising but is less well studied. A machine learning model trained on DBT images has the potential to increase the success of identifying breast cancer and reduce the time it takes to diagnose a patient, …

Identification And Characterization Of Forest Fire Risk Zones Leveraging Machine Learning Methods, Joshua Balson, Matt Chinchilla, Cam Lu, Jeff Washburn, Nibhrat Lohia
SMU Data Science Review
Across the United States, record numbers of wildfires are observed costing billions of dollars in property damage, polluting the environment, and putting lives at risk. The ability of emergency management professionals, city planners, and private entities such as insurance companies to determine if an area is at higher risk of a fire breaking out has never been greater. This paper proposes a novel methodology for identifying and characterizing zones with increased risks of forest fires. Methods involving machine learning techniques use the widely available and recorded data, thus making it possible to implement the tool quickly.

What Does Masculinity Have To Do With It? The Roles Of Fathers In The Socialization Of Children’S Emotions And Emotion Regulation, Kathryn Cherry
Dissertations
Emotion regulation skills are important in a variety of domains throughout the lifespan, including psychological, social, academic, and occupational functioning. Research on children’s emotion regulation skill development often examines the family, exploring caregiver approaches to emotion socialization. However, this research has predominantly been conducted with mothers. Fathering is of particular interest to children’s emotional development for a variety of reasons, including the role of traditional Western masculine norms in gendered differences in emotion expression and regulation techniques. Fathers’ conformity with masculine norms and difficulty with emotion regulation have potential to impact their emotion socialization practices, and therefore relate to their …

The Effects Of Hydrologic Heterogeneity On Harmful Algal Blooms In Freshwater Reservoir, Lake Sinclair, Georgia, Margaret Blackledge
Biology Theses
Aquatic habitats are frequently studied after a major water quality problem like the occurrence of an algal bloom. In this study, A proactive rather than a reactive response was considered, where the complexity of conditions conducive to uncontrolled cell growth were studied before a bloom took place by sampling regularly. This study aimed to monitor water quality by monthly sampling of algal communities for approximately one year. As the base of the aquatic food web, algae are a highly diverse group of organisms with varying sensitivity to physical and chemical changes in the environment. Four shallow sites were monitored at …

Hydrogen Peroxide Vapor Decontamination Of Polylactic Acid Fibers, Alexandra Craig
Mechanical Engineering Theses
Electrospun fibers have attracted attentions in topical drug delivery due to the ability to modulate drug release at high drug loading. While the pharmaceutical properties of these drug-eluting fibers were reported elsewhere, the compatibility of these fibers with hydrogen peroxide vapor, an effective decontaminant, is not fully established. In this work, polylactic acid (PLA) microfibers loaded with acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) were electrospun to examine their compatibility with hydrogen peroxide vapor. Results suggested a strengthening effect of the PLA/ASA fibers due to intermolecular interactions of ASA with PLA, which modulated the in vitro drug release rates. After exposing PLA/ASA fibers to …

A Literature Review Of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Research, Brindlea Peterson
Honors Theses
Mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) are a type of traumatic brain injury (TBI) usually sustained from an injury to the head and are hard to diagnose due to the lack of physical evidence seen in diagnostic radiology. The estimated worldwide rate of incidence each year is 42 million, making mTBIs rather common. In the US armed forces, that rate of incidence is even higher due to the dangerous nature of the work being done. Many complications can come from not properly addressing an mTBI after it happens which makes being able to determine an appropriate return-to-play or return-to-duty time very …

First Record Of Fungal Diversity In The Tropical And Warm-Temperate Middle Miocene Climate Optimum Forests Of Eurasia, Jennifer M.K. O'Keefe
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
The middle Miocene Climate Optimum (MMCO) was the warmest interval of the last 23 million years and is one of the best analogs for proposed future climate change scenarios. Fungi play a key role in the terrestrial carbon cycle as dominant decomposers of plant debris, and through their interactions with plants and other organisms as symbionts, parasites, and endobionts. Thus, their study in the fossil record, especially during the MMCO, is essential to better understand biodiversity changes and terrestrial carbon cycle dynamics in past analogous environments, as well as to model future ecological and climatic scenarios. The fossil record also …

New Orleans During A Pandemic: Engaging African American Community Stakeholders On Covid-19 Information, Prevention, Testing And Vaccination, Anthony Thompson
XULAneXUS
This case study examines how the Louisiana Community Engagement Alliance Against COVID-19 Disparities (LA-CEAL) worked to engage African American residents in New Orleans during the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on research interviews with Black physicians, pharmacists, and community health providers, along with field notes collected during 12 months of project assistance, the study addresses four research questions concerning African American hesitancy toward COVID-19 treatment and vaccination, strategies for community engagement, clinical trial recruitment, and inclusive research practices during a pandemic. Findings indicate that vaccine hesitancy and research mistrust among Black New Orleanians are rooted in a long history of scientific racism …
Optimizing The Time To Transfer Sexually Produced Corals Of Porites Astreoides, Agaricia Agaricites, And Montastraea Cavernosa To An Offshore Nursery, Rachel Ionata
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
As reefs continue to decline globally and become unable to recover on their own, restoration becomes essential to abate reef degradation and boost reef recovery until the main sources of the degradation are addressed. Sexual propagation is an important restoration technique that still requires optimization. One of the major knowledge gaps is determining the optimal time to transfer newly-settled sexually-produced corals from an aquarium to an offshore nursery without compromising their survival and growth. This study transferred settlers from Porites astreoides, Agaricia agaricites, and Montastraea cavernosa to an offshore nursery at approximately one week, five weeks, and nine weeks post-settlement, …

Characterization Of Fish Assemblages On An Upper Mesophotic Reef In South Florida Using A Commercial Grade Mini Rov, Sydney L. Panzarino
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
Mesophotic coral ecosystems, or MCEs, are coral ecosystems at approximately 30-150m depths and represent the transitional zone where benthic organisms rely less on photosynthesis and more on filter-feeding or other feeding habits in order to sustain themselves. Fish assemblages in MCE’s have been poorly studied and may possibly provide a connection to shallow water reefs (SWR’s). Mesophotic reef fish communities from 32-37 m depths were assessed using video footage recorded by a remotely operated vehicle (ROV). Video transects were performed at three locations: unburied areas north and south of Port Everglades, as well as an area which experienced burial from …
Forms Of Femininity: The Esoteric Visual Language Of Amazigh Women Through Ceramic Traditions And Symbolic Motifs, Mackenzie Nunnally
Forms Of Femininity: The Esoteric Visual Language Of Amazigh Women Through Ceramic Traditions And Symbolic Motifs, Mackenzie Nunnally
Theses and Dissertations
Amazigh women exercise agency and maintain autonomy as individuals through an esoteric feminine visual language. This language incorporates traditional, ritual-based pottery-making practices that are grounded in ancient spiritual beliefs and socio-cultural roles. Highly functional yet artistic ceramicwares serve as forms of femininity, or visual representations of the women. Decorative yet decidedly symbolic, geometric motifs decorate these wares and serve as esoteric signifiers of Amazigh heritage while allowing the female artisans to communicate their own experiences, principles, and worldviews. This esoteric visual language is defined and analyzed by connections made between ancient aspects of Amazigh culture and ritual-based pottery-making practices, comparing …
