Androgenic Hormones In Crustacean Aquaculture: A Review, Muzaffer Mustafa Harlioğlu, Ardavan Farhadi̇
Androgenic Hormones In Crustacean Aquaculture: A Review, Muzaffer Mustafa Harlioğlu, Ardavan Farhadi̇
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Increased demands of the seafood market have led to the rapid growth in crustacean aquaculture production in various parts of the world. Therefore, an expansion in the knowledge of the reproductive biology of crustaceans has become more important. Hormones released from the androgenic gland (AG) in crustaceans are liable for both the separation of primary and secondary sexual features and reproductive behavior. AG removal in male crustaceans causes a transformation of the intersex animals towards the females and a degeneration of spermatids and reproductive organs. AG implantation and injection of AG extracts are common approaches for crustacean masculinization. In this …

Turkish Journal of Zoology
Feeding effects of the invasive, polyphagous brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB), Halyomorpha halys (Hemiptera:Pentatomidae), on some agricultural fruits (hazelnut, blueberry, mandarin, lemon) were investigated in Guria and Samegrelo regions of Georgia in 2019 and 2020. The damage to hazelnut kernels was evaluated when H. halys adults were allowed to feed on kernels in different stages of development. Furthermore, BMSB adults were allowed to feed on almost ripened fruits of blueberry, on small mandarin fruits which were not yet well developed, and on ripened fruits of mandarin. The evaluation of damage on lemon was recorded after allowing adult BMSB on small, …
The Clean Water Act At 50: Is The Act Obsolete?, Jonathan H. Adler
The Clean Water Act At 50: Is The Act Obsolete?, Jonathan H. Adler
Faculty Publications
As an introduction to “The Clean Water Act at 50” symposium, this Article explores the question of statutory obsolescence in the particular context of the CWA. Part I considers the phenomenon of statutory obsolescence and what it means to say that a given statute is “obsolete.” Part II then evaluates the CWA, identifying the reasons one might conclude that the Act is (or is not) obsolete. Part III then considers what could be done about the CWA’s obsolescence if, in fact, one concludes it is obsolete.
This abstract has been taken from the author's introduction.
Antidiscrimination Law Through A Sociolegal Lens, Anna Offit
Antidiscrimination Law Through A Sociolegal Lens, Anna Offit
Faculty Publications
This Symposium invites reflection on whether the Anthropology of Law has “any space left for the content of rules” at a time when the concerns of legal anthropologists have largely shifted to processes, materials, and practices that are “adjacent to law.” Taking the jury system as an illustrative case, this Essay advocates for the relevance and value of the anthropological study of rules, their content, and their effects. Looking in particular at antidiscrimination rules derived from Batson v. Kentucky, decided in 1986, it argues that a sociolegal, ethnographic approach to how lawyers perpetuate discrimination in jury selection offers insight …

Coral reefs have been detrimentally impacted causing health issues due to elevated ocean temperatures as a result of increased greenhouse gases. Extreme temperatures have also exacerbated coral diseases in tropical reef environments. Numerous studies have outlined the impacts of thermal stress and disease on coral organisms, as well as understanding the influence of site-based characteristics on coral physiology. However, few have discussed the interaction of all three. Laboratory out-planting restoration projects have been of importance throughout impacted areas such as the Caribbean and southern Florida in order to increase coral cover in these areas. This study analyzes photosynthetic efficiency of …
Humility, Climate Change, And The Pursuit Of Scientific Truth, John Copeland Nagle
Humility, Climate Change, And The Pursuit Of Scientific Truth, John Copeland Nagle
Journal Articles
This Essay begins with the understanding that environmental law could not exist without science. The tolerable amount of pollution, the proximity of a species to extinction, and the threats presented by climate change are just some of the questions that environmental law depends on science to answer. Often environmental law insists that science alone is relevant to a particular regulatory action, such as an air pollution standard or an endangered species listing. It is not surprising, therefore, that many disputes about environmental law are really disputes about science.
Science, however, does not always yield the information that environmental law needs …
Oxidative Damage To Brain Cells Underlies: (I) Resistance To Radiation And Increased Tumor Cell Growth In Glioblastoma; (Ii) Apoe Allele Status And Pentose Phosphate Pathway Proteins In Alzheimer Disease Mouse Models, Nicole Rummel
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
Oxidative phosphorylation occurs within the inner mitochondrial membrane producing ATP for the cell’s energy needs. The Electron Transport Chain carries out the transfer of electrons from electron carriers through a series of proteins to form a proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane. This gradient acts as the energy source needed to put a phosphate onto ADP and form ATP. With the large amounts of free electrons and oxygen within the mitochondria, an inevitable by-product of free radicals in the form of superoxide are produced. Superoxide (O-̇2) is a reactive radical that can react further to …
Synthesis Of 6,6- And 7,7-Difluoro-1-Acetamidopyrrolizidines And Their Oxidation Catalyzed By The Nonheme Fe Oxygenase Lolo, Nabin Panth
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
One of the remarkable steps in loline alkaloid biosynthesis is the installation of an ether bridge between two unactivated C atoms in 1-exo-acetamidopyrrolizidine (AcAP). LolO, a 2-oxoglutarate-dependent nonheme Fe oxygenase, catalyzes both the hydroxylation of AcAP and the resulting alcohol's cycloetherification to give N-acetylnornoline (NANL). The mechanism of hydroxylation is well understood, but the mechanism of the oxacyclization is not. I synthesized difluorinated analogs of AcAP in an attempt to further understand the mechanism of the unusual cycloetherification step.
I prepared 6,6-F2-AcAP in eight steps from N,O-protected 4-oxoproline. The key step was a Dieckmann …
Mass Spectrometric Analysis Of Lignin Model Compounds: Fundamental Investigations Of Ionization And Supramolecular Interactions For Lignocellulosic Biomass Applications, Kimberly Dean
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
Lignocellulosic biomass is pivotal for the development of renewable energy sources and materials essential to mitigate the exploitation of fossil fuels causing climate change and environmental pollution issues. The conversion of biomass into fuel requires the hydrolysis of cellulose and a biproduct of this process is the isolation of millions of tons of lignin as biorefinery waste. Lignin is a complex high molecular weight polymer whose structure remains undefined and critically limits potential industrial applications of lignocellulosic biomass. The advancement of analytical methods for structural elucidation of lignin and its ensemble of phenolic compounds is therefore essential to advance this …
The Role Of Charge On Dna Packaging And Integrity Within Reconstituted Peptide-Dna Assemblies, Ehigbai Oikeh
The Role Of Charge On Dna Packaging And Integrity Within Reconstituted Peptide-Dna Assemblies, Ehigbai Oikeh
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
In nature, DNA exists primarily in a highly compacted form. The compaction of DNA in vivo is mediated by cationic proteins; histone in somatic nuclei and arginine-rich peptides called protamines in sperm chromatin. The packaging in the sperm nucleus is significantly higher than somatic nuclei resulting in a final volume roughly 1/20th that of a somatic nucleus. This tight packaging results in a near crystalline packaging of the DNA helices. While the dense packaging of DNA in sperm nuclei is considered essential for both efficient genetic delivery as well as DNA protection against damage by mutagens and oxidative species, …

Development Of Fluorescence Based Approaches To Understand Astrocyte Biology In The Context Of Nicotine And Nicotinic Receptor Activity, Surya P. Aryal
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
Smoking and tobacco use (STU) is a major global health problem and worldwide more than six million people die due to tobacco related diseases each year. Although majority of smokers try to quit smoking several times in their life, traditional therapeutic approaches, which focus only on neuronal cells, have a very low success rate. Understanding the effect of nicotine on glial cells, synaptic communication and blood vasculature in the brain can provide further insights on the neurobiology of substance abuse and can potentially help to design better therapeutic approaches. Glial cells are non-excitable cells in the brain which do not …
Application Of Mass Spectrometry For Characterization Of Plant-Based Phenolics And Alkaloids, Masoumeh Dorrani
Application Of Mass Spectrometry For Characterization Of Plant-Based Phenolics And Alkaloids, Masoumeh Dorrani
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
Plant-derived compounds have the potential to produce value-added compounds with a variety of applications. For example, the lignin part of the lignocellulosic biomass, produced in large quantities as waste from the paper and pulp industries, is a rich source of phenolics with potential applications in the renewable energy sector, pharmaceutical, and chemical industries. On the other hand, plant alkaloids are the primary source for developing plant-derived therapeutics. Unfortunately, the recalcitrant nature of plant cell walls, low extraction yields of small secondary metabolites, and the lack of effective analytical methods for a rapid and accurate identification of plant-based compounds and plant’s …

Organizational Implications Of Pope Francis’ Integral Ecology, Frank J. Barrett, Ryan G. Duns
Organizational Implications Of Pope Francis’ Integral Ecology, Frank J. Barrett, Ryan G. Duns
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
We explore Pope Francis's “integral ecology” in the encyclical Laudato Si (Francis, 2015) as it provides us with an agenda for a planetary virtue ethic that should inspire the field of Organizational Development to reconsider the moral implications of our work. We begin by offering the framework of virtue ethics as a way of understanding Laudato Si (LS). We then summarize the argument in LS as it focuses on four ecological issues—climate change, pollution, water, and the plight of the poor as we tease out the document's implicit virtue ethic. Finally, we propose how OD practitioners can become more aware …
Venerating Earth: Three Sacramental Perspectives, Jame Schaefer
Venerating Earth: Three Sacramental Perspectives, Jame Schaefer
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
three prominent ways in which the sacramentality of creation has been nuanced over the centuries are explored: (1) Experiencing the presence of God in the world with focus on Ignatius of Loyola’s final contemplation in his Spiritual Exercises; (2) reflecting on manifestations of God’s goodness, power and wisdom that eminent patristic and medieval theologians discerned when studying the world and novel attributes that are discernible today when informed by current scientific findings; and (3) receiving the Eucharist as a heightened encounter with God that can strengthen individuals and communities to act cooperatively. These three ways of perceiving the world within …

The Ecology And Dispersal Of The Avian Vampire Fly In Its Native And Invasive Ranges, Carly M. Crow
The Ecology And Dispersal Of The Avian Vampire Fly In Its Native And Invasive Ranges, Carly M. Crow
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Invasive species are considered a leading threat to global biodiversity. There are three major steps in a successful invasion: 1. A species arrives to a non-native location 2. It establishes a breeding population 3. It spreads beyond the location of arrival. The need to understand what variables facilitate a successful invasion across these steps is pressing, especially when considering systems that are vulnerable to biodiversity loss such as islands. The first chapter of this thesis focuses on the arrival step of an invasion. I present research on insects found on a tourist boat traveling between islands in the Galapagos archipelago. …

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This qualitative study explored the lived experiences of individuals who practice a religion based on Yorùbá traditions and have formally engaged in professional counseling. There are a variety of indigenous religious systems that have derived from Yorùbá which are often viewed as people who are unlikely to discuss their engagement in a formal counseling relationship. This study considered the nature of how many individuals who practice a religion based on Yorùbá traditions approach counseling from a different perspective. The philosophy of Carl Rogers’ person-centered theory was used as the framework for defining the counseling relationship and the counseling process. An …
Investigating The Influence Of Stress On Motivational Dysfunction In Male And Female Rodents, Emily Laine Errante
Investigating The Influence Of Stress On Motivational Dysfunction In Male And Female Rodents, Emily Laine Errante
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Motivational dysfunction is present in a variety of disorders, including major depressive disorder, schizophrenia, and Parkinsonism and can negatively impact social functioning, employment, and treatment response. Interestingly, outside stressors and stress hormones have been shown to contribute to depressive episodes in humans and depressive-like behaviors in rodents, including reducing motivated behaviors. Effort-related decision making procedures have been utilized in both humans and animals in order to examine motivational dysfunction, as it offers a subject a choice between high effort/reward and low effort/reward options, but little research has examined the effects of stress on effort-related decision making behaviors. Moreover, almost all …

Wetland Restoration Efforts Result In Increasing Phylogenetic Diversity, Nicholas T. Foster
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Over the course of ecological restoration efforts, it has been observed that, despite restoration activities, species richness sometimes declines in a given habitat. While this response can be interpreted to mean that restoration activities are ineffective, other measures known as Phylogenetic Diversity Metrics can show that the community is actually becoming more diverse. Utilizing plant inventories collected as transect data from 1992-2021 of five wetland sites under various types of restoration in northern Illinois, a regional wetland community phylogeny was assembled. The community phylogeny was then analyzed for phylogenetic diversity measures through this 30-year period across the five sites. Additionally, …
Stress Analysis On Walls In Complex Fluids With Fluid-Solid Interaction, Dehong Fang
Stress Analysis On Walls In Complex Fluids With Fluid-Solid Interaction, Dehong Fang
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
The wall shear stress (WSS) in blood vessels influences many biological processes, such as atherosclerosis, clot growth, angiogenesis, aneurysm rupture, and blood cell transport and adhesion. The deformable red blood cells (RBCs) in blood flow make the WSS even more complex. To analyze the WSS in complex fluids with cell suspensions, numerical simulations of blood flows in simple straight channels were conducted, where the fluid-solid interactions were simulated by immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann method. The spatiotemporal dynamics of WSS were analyzed using dynamic mode decomposition (DMD), which is a technique that can extract the low-rank spatiotemporal features from complex fluids. The …
Understanding The Invasion History And Dispersal Patterns Of The Faucet Snail, Bithynia Tentaculata, Emma B. Grindle
Understanding The Invasion History And Dispersal Patterns Of The Faucet Snail, Bithynia Tentaculata, Emma B. Grindle
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Invasive species pose a major threat to biodiversity and are becoming increasingly common across the globe. The success of these invasive species often comes down to an ability to disperse effectively into novel environments over time and at multiple scales. Aquatic invasive species can be particularly challenging as they are not readily visible and are often well established before being formally observed. In the Upper Mississippi River region, an invasive European snail species, the faucet snail (Bithynia tentaculata) has invaded from Europe via the Great Lakes. The snail serves as an intermediate host for several species of trematode parasites that …

Factors Contributing To College Counselors’ Probability To Take A Client’S Sexual History, Adam Gregory
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Many young adults are experiencing human sexuality related issues and disorders. Researchers have found ample evidence linking hindered human sexuality discussions with clients by mental health professionals to low and reduced comfort, lack of willingness, and non-positive attitudes about sex. There is limited research that shows there is a connection between sex-based discussions in the field of mental health and the lack of clinicians’ education and training in the field of human sexuality. One of the most essential ways to identify, treat, and promote sexual health is a thorough sexual history taking by clinicians. Mental health professionals agree that taking …
