Impacts Of Management Practices And Soil Properties On Free-Living Nitrogen Fixation In Eastern South Dakota, Laura Galvan Nuevo
Impacts Of Management Practices And Soil Properties On Free-Living Nitrogen Fixation In Eastern South Dakota, Laura Galvan Nuevo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Free-living nitrogen (N) fixation (FLNF) may represent a sustainable pathway to supplement crop N demand in agroecosystems, yet edaphic and management factors regulating this process under field conditions remain poorly understood in the Northern Great Plains. Using 15N2 direct method to quantify potential FLNF (pFLNF) and baseline FLNF (bFLNF), this thesis investigates how crop rotations (2-, 3-, and 4-year systems), tillage management (conventional vs. no-till), cover cropping, and soil properties affect the potential of free-living diazotrophs to supply N via FLNF in a long-term no-till corn-based system in Southeastern South Dakota. A two-year field study evaluated pFLNF across four growing …

Elucidating The Results Of Multiple Linear Regression: A Systematic Literature Review And Monte Carlo Comparative Simulation Study Of Relative Importance Methodologies, Oscar Gaytan
Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations
Theory-supported multiple linear regression models are often formed to assess the impact of HR practices on organizational performance and other desired outcomes. Several methods are available to determine which predictors contribute most to said outcomes. However, researchers may make agential cuts in the method selection phase, with their histories, experiences, or perspectives on relative importance measures influencing their decisions. When multiple measures are employed, discordant results leave room for differing interpretations, potentially leading to suboptimal guidance. Correlation-Adjusted coRrelations (CAR) scores offer a unique alternative to established relative importance methodologies. However, a systematic literature review indicated that no large-scale comparison of …
Immune Suppression And Epigenetic Reprogramming In Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition, Hanxu Lu
Immune Suppression And Epigenetic Reprogramming In Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition, Hanxu Lu
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is increasingly recognized as a dynamic spectrum of cellular programthat contributes to tumor progression, metastasis, and therapeutic resistance. Rather than existing as discrete epithelial or mesenchymal phenotypes, tumor cells undergo intermediate EMT states in which epithelial and mesenchymal features are partially and variably expressed. In this thesis, I studied EMT state heterogeneity through two complementary and integrated dimensions: tumor-immune interactions and the dynamic remodeling of epigenetic programs across the EMT spectrum. Using a clonal EMT model derived from the murine triple-negative 4T1 mammary carcinoma cell line, including epithelial, intermediate, and mesenchymal states that are stably maintained in …
Advancing Cns Tumor Management: Novel Modalities In Surgery, Radiation, And Chemotherapy, Armin David Tavakkoli
Advancing Cns Tumor Management: Novel Modalities In Surgery, Radiation, And Chemotherapy, Armin David Tavakkoli
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Most tumors affecting the brain and spine are managed through a combination of surgical resection, radiation, and chemotherapy; however, operative morbidity from invasive surgery, the narrow therapeutic window of conventional radiotherapy, and poor blood-brain barrier penetration of systemic agents are critical barriers that hinder long term tumor control. This thesis presents three complementary strategies to advance brain and spine tumor therapy. First, we investigate laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) in the treatment of spinal tumors with metastatic epidural spinal cord compression, replacing “separation surgery” with a minimally invasive, image-guided approach that maximizes tumor ablation while preserving neurologic function. Second, we …
The Influence, Dependency, And Targeting Of Fatty Acid Uptake In Er+ Breast Cancer, Abigail E. Goen
The Influence, Dependency, And Targeting Of Fatty Acid Uptake In Er+ Breast Cancer, Abigail E. Goen
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Estrogen Receptor-positive/ Human Epidermal Growth Factor 2-negative, breast cancer (ER+/HER2- BC) is the most prevalent subtype of BC, impacting millions of individuals. Although early screening and treatment with endocrine therapy has greatly enhanced survival, this subtype sustains a steady increase of risk for recurrent disease for decades after diagnosis, indicating the persistence of residual cancer cells that are capable of maintaining dormancy for >20 years prior to metastatic outgrowth. Dormant cells reprogram metabolic pathways which can be profoundly influenced by the tumor microenvironment in promoting quiescence or proliferation. Fatty acid oxidation dependency has been noted as a hallmark of drug …
A Mixed-Methods Case Study Exploring Peer Online Course Review And Equity Outcomes At A California Community College, Mark C. Malonzo
A Mixed-Methods Case Study Exploring Peer Online Course Review And Equity Outcomes At A California Community College, Mark C. Malonzo
Theses and Dissertations
This single-case mixed-methods study examined how faculty participation in the Peer Online Course Review (POCR) process influenced course design practices and equity-focused learning experiences in asynchronous online courses at Jay College. Institutional data indicated persistent equity gaps, with BIPOC students, particularly Black, American Indian, and Pacific Islander students, experiencing lower success and completion rates in online courses.
The quantitative strand analyzed pre- and post-POCR student success metrics using existing institutional data. The qualitative strand drew on structured faculty interviews to examine changes in instructional practices, accessibility, and equity-minded pedagogy following participation in POCR. Quantitative and qualitative data were analyzed separately …
Coarse-Grained Models For Microbial Metabolisms And Biological Interactions, Meng Gao
Coarse-Grained Models For Microbial Metabolisms And Biological Interactions, Meng Gao
Open Access Dissertations
Microorganisms are microscopic, typically unicellular organisms widely distributed across the world’s environments. In the global ocean, they account for the majority of primary production and decompose organic matter to drive nutrient cycles. Through their metabolic processes, including photosynthesis, dinitrogen (N2) fixation, sulfur oxidation, and methanogenesis, microbes contribute to global biogeochemical processes, and establish their ecological niches in suitable habitats. Their biological interactions, including competition, symbiosis, and grazing, are important links among different functional groups in marine communities. Consequently, quantifying microbial metabolisms and their biological interactions is important to investigate their ecological functions in marine ecosystems and the global …

Ecce Leadership Development: Supports, Barriers, And Identity Formation, Andrea Weidele
Open Access Dissertations
Early childhood care and education (ECCE) leadership development is not given the attention it deserves. Despite the proven link between high-quality ECCE programs and positive societal outcomes, leadership development within the sector is significantly under-resourced. Because program quality is inherently tied to leadership efficacy, there is an urgent need to investigate the supports and structures that foster effective ECCE leadership. This study addressed that gap by using a qualitative multiple case study to explore how six ECCE program leaders of licensed ECCE programs from a New England state describe their leadership development, including supports and barriers they encountered and how …
Linking Phytoplankton Physiology And Ecology To Global Biogeochemical Cycles: A Modeling Approach, Margaret Bernish
Linking Phytoplankton Physiology And Ecology To Global Biogeochemical Cycles: A Modeling Approach, Margaret Bernish
Open Access Dissertations
Phytoplankton, or microscopic primary producers, contribute to carbon export through the biological transformation of carbon dioxide into organic molecules. Phytoplankton are responsible for approximately half of global net primary production, while only contributing minimally to total photosynthetic biomass. Despite their important role in the global cycling of nutrients, phytoplankton physiology and ecology are often highly simplified in global biogeochemical models. This dissertation elucidates the role of phytoplankton physiology and ecology within biogeochemical cycles, allowing for better characterization of marine microbial distribution and better representation of nutrient cycling for interpretive and predictive models. The development of formulations that link physiological responses …
Investigating The Effects Of Nucleopore Defects On The Cellular Response To Stress In Als/Ftd Ipsc-Derived Neurons, Alicia Christine Collins
Investigating The Effects Of Nucleopore Defects On The Cellular Response To Stress In Als/Ftd Ipsc-Derived Neurons, Alicia Christine Collins
Open Access Dissertations
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/frontotemporal dementia (ALS/FTD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease spectrum characterized by motor dysfunction, cognitive decline, and death within a few years of clinical onset. Hallmark features of ALS/FTD include defects in nucleocytoplasmic transport (NCT) and abnormal cytoplasmic mislocalization and aggregation of the RNA-binding protein TDP-43, both of which have been shown to be exasperated by oxidative stress (OS). It remains unclear how these processes are connected and how they collectively contribute to neurodegeneration. To fill this gap of knowledge, we used human embryonic kidney cells, neuroblastoma cells, and induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cortical neurons harboring the ALS/FTD C9ORF72 …
Submesoscale Dynamics Of Phytoplankton And Carbon Export Revealed By High-Resolution Airborne And Satellite Remote Sensing Of Currents And Ocean Color, Sarah E. Lang
Open Access Dissertations
Satellites and airborne sensors reveal submesoscale (1 - 10 km) variability in ocean color in the form of filaments, eddies, and patches. The variability in ocean color is closely tied to the physical dynamics that restructure phytoplankton distributions and drive active biological responses like changes in primary productivity and community structure. As the base of the marine food web and a key component of the biological carbon pump, phytoplankton are crucial to the overall health of marine ecosystems and to the ocean's role in climate. This dissertation focuses on the use of airborne and satellite remote sensing to study the …
Noncanonical Roles Of Hepatitis B Virus Precore Rna In Reverse, Mengyin Zhang
Noncanonical Roles Of Hepatitis B Virus Precore Rna In Reverse, Mengyin Zhang
Student Theses and Dissertations
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a partially double-stranded DNA virus that replicates through reverse transcription. Transcription from the HBV core promoter generates two genome-length RNAs: pregenomic RNA (pgRNA) and precore RNA (pcRNA). pcRNA contains the entire pgRNA sequence plus an additional 32 nucleotides at its 5’ end that include the precore start codon, enabling translation of the precore protein, the precursor of the secreted HBV e antigen (HBeAg). Whereas pgRNA is translated to produce core and polymerase and serves as the template for reverse transcription by cis-acting HBV polymerase, pcRNA has long been considered unable to support HBV DNA synthesis. …

Medical images exhibit latent anatomical groupings, such as organs, tissues, and pathological regions, that standard Vision Transformers (ViTs) fail to exploit. While recent work like SBM-Transformer attempts to incorporate such structures through stochastic binary masking, they suffer from non-differentiability, training instability, and the inability to model complex community structure. We present DCMM-Transformer, a novel ViT architecture for medical image analysis that incorporates a Degree-Corrected Mixed-Membership (DCMM) model as an additive bias in self-attention. Unlike prior approaches that rely on multiplicative masking and binary sampling, our method introduces community structure and degree heterogeneity in a fully differentiable and interpretable manner. Comprehensive …

Characterization Of The Human Thnatomicrobiome By Decomposition Stage Through Bioinformatic And Meta Data Analysis, Ashton C. Laughlin
Biology Theses
Estimating the postmortem interval (PMI) is one of the most crucial factors in forensic death investigations. Recent advances in forensic microbiology have led to increased interest in using the study of the human postmortem microbiome, or “thanatomicrobiome,” to improve PMI estimates. In addition to current PMI estimation techniques, microbial community succession could serve as a valuable tool in estimating PMI. Further research is needed to develop a comprehensive understanding of the human postmortem microbiome. The purpose of this study is to contribute to the expansion of this tool by reviewing the current literature and analyzing previously published data using the …
Adversarial Robustness In Biomedical Time-Series Models, Rohan Tiwari
Adversarial Robustness In Biomedical Time-Series Models, Rohan Tiwari
Bioengineering Theses
This study investigates adversarial vulnerabilities in deep learning models for biomedical time-series classification across two clinically important modalities: electrocardiography (ECG) and electroencephalography (EEG). Using the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia and CHB-MIT seizure datasets, I evaluate time-domain attacks (FGSM, PGD), Fourier-domain constrained attacks, and learned spectral perturbations designed to reveal modality-specific sensitivity patterns. Across both tasks, a consistent trend emerges low-frequency components (0–5 Hz) constitute a dominant axis of adversarial vulnerability, with perturbations in this range producing the steepest degradation in classification performance. In ECG models, protecting the physiologically relevant QRS band (5–20 Hz) significantly improves robustness, whereas EEG models remain highly sensitive …

The Atlantic sea scallop (Placopecten magellanicus) fishery on the Northeast U.S. continental shelf generates approximately USD 500 million ex-vessel revenues annually, making it one of the most valuable single species fisheries in the United States. Wind energy development is planned for key areas on the U.S. Mid-Atlantic shelf where the Atlantic sea scallop fishery operates, creating novel challenges in managing trade-offs between traditional users like fisheries and new users like offshore wind energy. An agent-based modeling framework that integrates spatial dynamics in Atlantic sea scallop stock biology, fishing fleet behavior, and federal management decisions, was implemented to investigate …

The Amundsen Sea Embayment (ASE) experiences both the highest ice shelf melt rates and the highest biological productivity in West Antarctica. Using 19 years of satellite data and modelling output, we investigate the long-term influence of environmental factors on the phytoplankton bloom in the Amundsen Sea (ASP) and Pine Island (PIP) polynyas. We test the prevailing hypothesis that changes in ice shelf melt rate could drive interannual variability in the polynyas' surface chlorophyll-a (chl a) and Net Primary Productivity (NPP). We find that the interannual variability and long-term change in glacial meltwater may play an important role in …

Ecological feedbacks are fundamental features of the Earth system, affecting physical processes and chemical cycles. Our understanding of the interactions underlying these feedbacks at different spatial and temporal scales and the extent to which feedbacks affect Earth system functioning remains limited. Climate change and other anthropogenic pressures are already negatively affecting ecological processes in marine, freshwater, and terrestrial ecosystems. These will most likely be amplified in the coming decades under our current warming and socioeconomic pathways. The knock-on impacts on ecological feedbacks have the potential to cause rapid perturbations to the Earth system, and may significantly impact the structure and …

Child sex trafficking is a major public health issue affecting the youth population of the United States and internationally. This scoping review examines risk factors on multiple levels including individual, family, community, and macro and digital contexts. A systematic search of databases identified 32 studies meeting inclusion criteria. Findings suggest that individual-level risk includes cumulative exposure to violence and trauma, substance use, mental health and behavioral problems, child welfare and justice involvement, runaway behavior, educational disruption, limited social support, and intersection demographic vulnerabilities (e.g., gender, sexuality, race/ethnicity, disability). Family‑level risk reflects unstable or unsafe home environments characterized by substance use, …
From Weapon To Shield: Risk And Special Intent In South Africa’S Case Against Israel, Heidi Matthews
From Weapon To Shield: Risk And Special Intent In South Africa’S Case Against Israel, Heidi Matthews
Articles & Book Chapters
South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice is best understood as a mode of judicial self-help, instead of a method of undermining Israel’s sovereignty. The fact that South Africa claims standing – based partly on its own obligation to prevent genocide – has been largely overlooked in scholarly discussions of the case. However, centring this fact allows us to see that it is Israel’s alleged intentional creation of circumstances that give rise to a serious risk of genocide in Gaza that constitutes the core of South Africa’s case. The plausible existence of such a risk …
Economic Development And The Environment, Kelsey Jack, Nicholas Ryan
Economic Development And The Environment, Kelsey Jack, Nicholas Ryan
Discussion Papers
Economic development relies on and transforms the environment. The transformation is evident in the poor environmental quality in many developing countries. For example, air quality in Southeast Asia is three times worse than in the United States, in sub-Saharan Africa four times worse and in South Asia more than six times worse. We model how environmental quality affects health, productivity and well-being and how individuals privately adapt to environmental hazards. We also model how collective action and formal regulation contribute to environmental quality. We draw three main findings from a review of empirical research on these mechanisms. First, individual adaptation …

Soil has played a fundamental yet undervalued role in shaping the fate of historical warfare. While the effects of war on the soil environment have been thoroughly investigated, the impact of soil on military strategies and battle outcomes remains poorly understood. This review aims to: i) explore the multifaceted role of soil in warfare, focusing on its impact on several aspects (mobility, fortifications, camouflage, health, geopolitical strategy, etc.); ii) identify which soil types were usually most associated with conflicts, and iii) how soil features influenced military decision-making. A dataset of over 17,000 recorded battles (1468 BCE–2003) was …

A national, anonymous, online survey was administered inviting 3,161 correctional health professionals to examine the associations between facility characteristics and the availability of medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) in jails and prisons. Responses from 268 participants representing 212 correctional facilities were analyzed. We used multivariate logistic regression to identify associated facility characteristics, and open-ended responses were analyzed using content analysis. Facilities in the Western United States had higher odds of providing MOUD compared with those in the Midwest (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 3.67, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.28–10.99). Jails had higher odds of offering MOUD than prisons (AOR …

The utilization of extensive datasets, such as those generated by DNA or RNA sequencing, has become a central focus in drug discovery and personalized medicine (PerMed). Nonetheless, these datasets are constrained by the absence of protein-functionality testing, which affects physiological responses. In this study, we employed PamGene PamStation technology to quantify protein function by kinase activity across more than 500 signaling pathways from patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Using proteins derived from nine patients and five human HCC cell lines for drug discovery and the clinical trial-on-a-chip approach, we developed comprehensive PerMed scores from the PamStation data to differentiate individual …
“If You Can Do This Job, You Can Do Anything”: An Exploration Of The Lived Experiences Of Early Career Social Workers Engaged With People Living With Hiv/Aids, John J. Edwards
Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses
The HIV/AIDS epidemic, now in its fifth decade, is one of the most consequential health, social, scientific, and political challenges of the modern era. Since its emergence, social work has played a critical role in service provision and advocacy on behalf of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). Tremendous biomedical advancements over the years have fundamentally transformed HIV from an invariably fatal illness to a chronic and manageable condition. As the profile of HIV has changed over time, less is known about the contemporary experiences of social workers engaged with PLWHA. To address this gap, semi-structured interviews were conducted with early …

Modeling “Abnormal” Ovulatory Dynamics: Enzymes, Insulin, And The Impact Of Stress, Savannah E. Williams
Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses
This work focuses on modeling the impact of stress on ovulatory dynamics. We develop a mathematical model of endocrine processes including gonadotropin-releasing hormone, kisspeptin signaling, and the ovulatory cycle. Integral to our model development, we define ovulatory criteria, conduct an extensive global sensitivity analysis, and fit parameters to clinical hormone data throughout the ovulatory cycle. We then incorporate four biological pathways through which stress may interact with the ovulatory cycle – increased aromatase activity, hyperinsulinemia, suppression of luteinizing hormone (LH), and the influence of cortisol on kisspeptin signaling. High levels of simulated chronic stress cause significant disruption of the ovulatory …

An interplay of growth factors and signaling pathways governs the development and maintenance of lymphatic vasculature, ensuring proper fluid homeostasis and immune function. Disruption of these regulatory mechanisms can lead to congenital lymphatic disorders and contribute to various pathological conditions. However, the mechanisms underlying the molecular regulation of these processes remain elusive. Here, we reveal a critical and previously unappreciated role for the signaling scaffold protein Shoc2 in lymphangiogenesis. We demonstrate that loss of Shoc2 results in near-complete loss of lymphatic vasculature in vivo and senescence of lymphatic endothelial cells in vitro. Mechanistically, Shoc2 is required for balancing signaling through …
