Synthesis And Application Of Novel Trisresorcinarenes And Investigation Of New Photochemical Processes Of Chromophores, Carson Lawrence Hasselbrink

Open Access Dissertations

Two fields of organic chemistry with a prominent presence in many research groups are supramolecular chemistry and photochemistry. These fields continue to grow and spread their influence in many industries and research areas. The first two chapters of this dissertation focus on the studies and applications of the macrocyclic isomers Noria and trisresorcinarene (R3). The development of their respective rotaxanes via the slipping method was examined and how the incorporation of the linear thread molecule affects the binding properties of the exterior pockets for target gas molecules: CO2, Xe, and Kr. Additionally, a novel water-soluble version of Noria …

The American Lobster (Homarus Americanus) In Narragansett Bay During A Time Of Ecosystem Flux: Temperature, Predation, And Larval Dynamics, Kristin Huizenga Jan 2022

The American Lobster (Homarus Americanus) In Narragansett Bay During A Time Of Ecosystem Flux: Temperature, Predation, And Larval Dynamics, Kristin Huizenga

Open Access Dissertations

The American lobster (Homarus americanus) in southern New England sustained a particularly prosperous fishery during the 1980s and 1990s. However, in 2001 lobsters in the region began to decline, leading to the eventual collapse of the fishery in Rhode Island. The Narragansett Bay was no exception to this trend, with the number of lobsters caught by the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography weekly fish trawl survey peaking in the 1990s before the decline. Today, few lobsters are caught in the Bay.

This dissertation seeks to identify whether environmental stressors and predators drive lobster populations in …

The Self-Health Movement: Changing For Good Health, Julian Michael Saad Jan 2022

The Self-Health Movement: Changing For Good Health, Julian Michael Saad

Open Access Dissertations

Each person's efforts to support their personal health deserve to be supported and valued by those providers, researchers, and politicians that take a vested interest in the health of populations. Although there are scientific fields, like Population Health, that are committed to supporting equitable patterns of health across populations, there remains a very real absence of a unifying framework that can coordinate the very essential efforts of persons, populations, providers, researchers, and politicians. There is a great need for a generally-accepted and widely-used way of communicating to individual persons and general populations about the science of their health and the …

Advanced Water Treatment And Reuse With Activated Ferrate, Charles D. Spellman Jan 2022

Advanced Water Treatment And Reuse With Activated Ferrate, Charles D. Spellman

Open Access Dissertations

Ferrate is a promising, emerging water treatment technology. However, there has been limited research on the application of Ferrate in a water reuse paradigm. Recent literature has shown that ferrate oxidation of target contaminants could be improved by "activation" with the addition of reductants or acid. This study examined the impact of sulfite-activated Ferrate in laboratory water matrix and spiked municipal wastewater effluents with the goal of transforming organic contaminants of concern (e.g., 1,4-dioxane) and inactivating pathogenic organisms. Additionally, the formation of brominated disinfection byproducts by activated ferrate were examined and a proposed reaction pathway for byproduct formation is presented. …

The Role Of Shoc2 In Embryonic Development, Rebecca G. Norcross Jan 2022

The Role Of Shoc2 In Embryonic Development, Rebecca G. Norcross

Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry

The canonical ERK1/2 signaling cascade regulates cellular functions critical in vertebrate embryonic development such as proliferation, apoptosis, differentiation, and migration. Thus, its signals are controlled by a variety of mechanisms. Scaffold proteins are considered central to the mechanisms regulating the transmission of the ERK1/2 signals. Yet, their functions in development nor the molecular mechanisms by which they exert their control are not well understood.

This study focuses on the essential regulator of ERK1/2 signals during development – the scaffold protein Shoc2. Loss of Shoc2 leads to early embryonic lethality in mice and zebrafish. Germline mutations in the shoc2 gene result …

Structural Basis For Reversible Glucan Phosphorylation By Glucan Dikinases And Glucan Phosphatases, Tiantian Chen Jan 2022

Structural Basis For Reversible Glucan Phosphorylation By Glucan Dikinases And Glucan Phosphatases, Tiantian Chen

Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry

Plants store glucose in the form of starch, an insoluble macromolecule that is synthesized and degraded diurnally. Glucan phosphatases play a critical role in starch breakdown, working with glucan dikinases in a cyclic phosphorylation and dephosphorylation. Herein, we present a novel glucan phosphatase Like SEX Four3 (LSF3) from Physcomitrella patens. Structural and enzymatic studies demonstrate that LSF3 is a dimeric glucan phosphatase that displays robust specific glucan phosphatase activity. Dimerization is shown to be essential for LSF3 stability and function. Structure-guided bioinformatic analysis shows that LSF3 is found in early land plants and green algae.

Building upon our understanding of …

Comparison Of Peak Skin Dose Calculated By Patient Radiation Dose Monitoring And Tracking Systems Versus Solid-State Detector Measurements, Vincent D. Gargaro

Theses and Dissertations

This study aims to compare the Peak Skin Dose (PSD) that patients obtain from fluoroscopy procedures. The study will show the differences between the PSD measured and calculated from a solid-state detector and the values the unit is displaying. Also, the study will compare PSD measurements from Patient Radiation Dose Monitoring and Tracking Systems (PRDMT). Numerous parameters need to be obtained to depict the PSD that a patient is receiving accurately. The PSD is crucial in assessing the potential biological effects of radiation.

The formalization used to derive the calculated PSD in this study has been established by Jones, A. …

Rational Design Of Metal-Organic Frameworks (Mofs)-Based Functional Materials Towards Better Air Quality, Zan Zhu Jan 2022

Rational Design Of Metal-Organic Frameworks (Mofs)-Based Functional Materials Towards Better Air Quality, Zan Zhu

Theses and Dissertations

Air pollution is a major threat to environmental safety and public health. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particulate matter (PM), and airborne microorganisms are three typical air pollutants. Conventional strategies to prevent and mitigate air pollution have been employed, which, however, are generally passive. For instance, VOC sensing through solid-state devices is a conventional approach, which, however, is not capable of capturing and removing VOCs. On the other hand, air filters and face masks are useful equipment to protect people from inhaling PM and airborne microorganisms. But most commercial filters can only capture them on the surfaces, which may cause secondary …

Clear Aligner Therapy In The Mixed Dentition: Indications And Practitioner Perspectives, Nicholas M. Lynch Jan 2022

Clear Aligner Therapy In The Mixed Dentition: Indications And Practitioner Perspectives, Nicholas M. Lynch

Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: This study evaluated current trends and perspectives among orthodontists regarding clear aligner therapy in the mixed dentition (CAMD), including insights into perceived indications, compliance, oral hygiene, and other factors.

Methods: An original, 22-item survey was mailed to both a randomized, nationally representative sample of practicing orthodontic specialists (n = 800) and to a specific, randomized sub-sample of high-aligner-prescribing orthodontists (n = 200). Questions assessed respondents’ demographic information, experience with clear aligner therapy, and perceived advantages/disadvantages of CAMD compared to fixed appliance therapy (FA). Responses were compared using McNemar’s chi-squared and paired t-tests to assess CAMD versus FA. …

Coupled Structure-Function Responses To Disturbance: High Structural Complexity Resistance Supports Primary Production Resistance, Kerstin M. Niedermaier Jan 2022

Coupled Structure-Function Responses To Disturbance: High Structural Complexity Resistance Supports Primary Production Resistance, Kerstin M. Niedermaier

Theses and Dissertations

The capacity of forests to resist structural change and retain material legacies–the biotic and abiotic resources that persist through disturbance–is crucial to sustaining ecosystem functioning after disturbance. However, the role of forest structure as both a material legacy and feature supporting carbon (C) cycling stability following disturbance has not been widely investigated. We used a large-scale disturbance manipulation to ask whether LiDAR-derived canopy structures as material legacies drive 3-year responses of NPP to a range of disturbance severity levels. As part of the Forest Resilience Threshold Experiment (FoRTE) in northern Michigan, USA we simulated phloem-disrupting disturbances at a range of …

Varied Levels Of Fructose Consumption Induce Physiological, Cognitive, And Mitochondrial Alterations In Aged Female Rats, Emilie L. Bjerring Jan 2022

Varied Levels Of Fructose Consumption Induce Physiological, Cognitive, And Mitochondrial Alterations In Aged Female Rats, Emilie L. Bjerring

Theses and Dissertations

Since the 1970s, fructose consumption has dramatically increased within the United States, as well as the world. While adolescents tend to be the largest consumer of fructose, mostly seen in the form of sugary beverages, the consequences of a high fructose diet started in adulthood can also have severe implications on physiological parameters as well as cognition. Several studies have linked fructose consumption to metabolic syndrome, a clustering of symptoms related to overall health, with particular emphasis placed on obesity, type II diabetes, and the relationship with Alzheimer’s Disease. These findings largely stem from the outcomes of studies on cognition, …

Investigating The Effects Of Psilocybin On Models Of Anxiety, Recognition Memory, And Depression-Like Behavior And The Role Of The 5-Ht2a Receptor In Mediating Psilocybin’S Impact On Behavioral Despair, Nikita Thakur

Theses and Dissertations

Psychedelics are a class of hallucinogenic substances that exert their effects through serotonin (5-HT) receptor agonism, particularly at the 5-HT2 receptor, which is further characterized into the 2A, 2B, and 2C subtypes. While some research studies indicate that psychedelics mediate their effects via 5-HT2A receptor agonism, others show that it is not necessary to induce these effects. Recently, there has been a growing interest in psychedelic-assisted therapy as a promising alternative for treatment of anxiety and depression, two of the most common psychiatric disorders worldwide associated with significant morbidity. Although antidepressants and pharmacological interventions for anxiety have revolutionized …

The Interaction Of Moral Identity And Recognition On Fundraising Behavior, Craig O. Fulton Jan 2022

The Interaction Of Moral Identity And Recognition On Fundraising Behavior, Craig O. Fulton

Theses and Dissertations

The research examined the role of moral identity in motivating prosocial behavior, specifically volunteer fundraising measured in dollars via Facebook fundraisers for the Spina Bifida Association, a national nonprofit organization. I predicted a three-way interaction of moral identity symbolization, internalization, and recognition (i.e., public acknowledgment of the gift by the organization) to predict prosocial behavior. When moral identity internalization is low, I hypothesized that high moral identity symbolization will motivate recognized prosocial behavior due to the opportunity to have one’s prosocial behavior in a public venue. In contrast, when moral identity internalization is high, prosocial behavior would be motivated regardless …

Exosomal Mirnas As Biomarkers For Radiation Toxicity In Breast Cancer Patients, Mina V. Mcginn Jan 2022

Exosomal Mirnas As Biomarkers For Radiation Toxicity In Breast Cancer Patients, Mina V. Mcginn

Theses and Dissertations

Radiotherapy (RT) is a standard treatment for most breast cancer patients (BCPs), but is often accompanied by acute and late toxic effects in normal tissue. Exosomes are nano vesicles about 30-150nm in size that originate from the endosomal network and are found in most body fluids. Exosomes are a fundamental driver of intercellular communication by transferring proteins, lipids and microRNA (miRNA). Exosomal miRNA (Exo-miRNA) signatures may serve as non-invasive prediction biomarkers of post-radiation toxicities of BCPs. Eighty six BCPs treated in the Radiation Oncology Department were enrolled in an IRB approved study. BCPs were evaluated weekly during RT and at …

Chronic pain (CP) is a significant contributor to disability and disease burden globally. In 2019, approximately 50.2 million adults (20.4% of the US population) experienced chronic pain, contributing to $560-635 billion in direct medical costs. In addition, the worldwide prevalence of diabetes mellitus has reached epidemic proportions and is set to increase to 629 million by 2045. Almost 50% of patients with diabetes present with diabetic neuropathy (DN), and one in five patients with diabetes presents with painful DN (pDN) which is the most common cause of neuropathic pain (NP) in the US. Symptomatic treatment is the mainstay of management …

Anthracyclines Attenuate The Nrf1-Mediated Bounce-Back Response, Bader Albalawi Jan 2022

Anthracyclines Attenuate The Nrf1-Mediated Bounce-Back Response, Bader Albalawi

Theses and Dissertations

Proteasome inhibitors, such as carfilzomib, are FDA-approved to treat multiple myeloma and mantle cell lymphoma. Unfortunately, proteasome inhibitors have only produced clinically significant results in patients with hematologic cancers, despite their predicted pan-cancer utility, and even hematologic cancer types frequently show intrinsic and acquired resistance.

One proposed mechanism responsible for the proteasome inhibitors' shortcomings is the NRF1-mediated bounce-back response. Identification of drugs that can potentiate the action of proteasome inhibitors could overcome resistance in patients with hematologic cancers and expand proteasome inhibitors' use to treat solid tumors. Our previous studies have identified anthracyclines as potential compounds that interfere with the …

Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI) are a class of drugs that were originally developed for the treatment of depression but have since been expanded to be used in management of affective and neurological disorders, as well as stroke and aging-related neurocognitive changes. Ranging from irreversible to reversible and selective to non-selective, these drugs target the monoamine oxidase (MAO) enzyme and prevent the oxidative deamination of various monoamines and catecholamines such as serotonin and dopamine, respectively. Tyramine is a potent releaser of norepinephrine (NE) and is found in high concentrations in foods such as aged cheeses and meats. Under normal conditions, NE …

Covid-19 Vaccination In Palestine/Israel: Citizenship, Capitalism, And The Logic Of Elimination, Nicolas Howard, Emily Schneider Jan 2022

Covid-19 Vaccination In Palestine/Israel: Citizenship, Capitalism, And The Logic Of Elimination, Nicolas Howard, Emily Schneider

Sociology & Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Despite Israel’s responsibility under international law to combat the spread of contagious diseases and epidemics in its occupied territories, Israeli officials have refused to distribute COVID-19 vaccines to Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Through a critical discourse analysis of Israeli officials’ statements regarding Israel’s COVID-19 vaccination campaign, this paper explores how Israel evades this responsibility while presenting itself as committed to public health and human rights. We find that Israeli officials strategically present Palestinians as an autonomous nation when discussing COVID-19 vaccinations, despite Israel’s ongoing attempts to prevent the creation of a Palestinian state. Relatedly, Israel justifies …
