Microcoleus is an anatoxin-producing genus of cyanobacteria found globally. Anatoxin (ATX) is a high potency neuromuscular toxin. Fatalities caused by ingesting ATX- contaminated water, or the ATX-producing algae, have been recorded since the 18th century, but have more recently increased in magnitude and frequency. This experiment is intended as a pilot study to explore how future conditions of the Russian River under increased agricultural and industrial pollution, and climate change might affect the growth and toxin production of M. anatoxicus. M. anatoxicus underwent 12 treatments made up of 3 treatment groups targeting increased salinity and nutrient gradients. The only significant …

The mammalian dive response drives the physiological changes that humans undergo while diving to conserve enough oxygen in the body for basic functions to continue to function. The autonomic nervous system synergistically influences the cardiac, pulmonary, and vascular systems and causes apnea, bradycardia, vasoconstriction and splenic emptying to sustain aerobic ATP production in the heart and brain. This thesis begins with the local history of the Liberty Prairie, the land where I conducted the ecological field-work that I later discuss in my second thesis on soil microbiome diversity (“Examining Soil Microbial Diversity in Transition Zones Between Corn Fields and Restored Prairie in the Upper Midwest"). I examine the Indigenous histories of the land, and the conflicts between the Bodwéwadmi and Euro-American settlers that resulted in the land being farmed for cattle, corn, and soy for over a hundred and fifty years. Prairies were once the largest ecosystem in North America, but agriculture and settlement has destroyed up to 99% of their pre-colonization extent. Prairie restorations are a strategy to recover the biodiversity and carbon sequestration functions of these grasslands, but typically occur in isolated strips between agricultural fields. My thesis analyzes how effective prairie restorations in the Liberty Prairie (northeastern Illinois) are at recovering the diversity of the prairie soil microbiome, focusing on verrucomicrobia abundance, alpha diversity, and soil physical characteristics.

This study aimed to examine the relationship of physical activity and/or dietary quality and diabetes prevalence in the general population and within specific age groups. It was a cross-sectional study using 2011–2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Patterns Equivalents data (n = 15,674). Physical activity was measured by Global Physical Activity questionnaire; dietary quality was analyzed using the Healthy Eating Index 2015; diabetes prevalence was determined by reported diagnosis and glycohemoglobin or fasting glucose. Data were analyzed using multiple logistic regression adjusted for demographic variables and weight status. Results revealed that although …

This work explores the present-day interactions of a long-ago established tree disease complex known as beech bark disease (BBD) that afflicts the American beech tree (Fagus grandifolia) in northeastern North America. Disease development initiates when an exotic scale insect known as the beech scale (Cryptoccocus fagisuga) infest susceptible American beech and feed on live parenchyma cells in the outer bark. The interactions that occur between the beech scale and living bark predispose the host to infection by two independently vectored species of pathogenic fungi: Neonectria faginata and Neonectria ditissima. Schwann cells are a type of glial cell in the peripheral nervous system that produce the myelin sheath surrounding neuronal axons. This myelin insulates the neurons and promotes the rapid conduction of electrical impulses throughout the body. Schwann cells have also been found to play a critical role in neuron repair following nerve injury. During nerve injury, the myelin sheath is damaged, stimulating Schwann cells to release cytokines, or inflammatory mediators, that recruit immune cells to the site of injury so that the myelin debris can be cleared, and repair can take place.1 Then neuronal growth is facilitated by heregulin …

Singular efforts in PK-12 settings to instill a social justice mindset will not achieve the same outcomes as social justice education infused throughout content area instruction. In collaboration with 10th -grade teachers, we developed and implemented a biblioguidance curriculum to develop students’ social justice and content area competency. Evaluation findings from the pilot implementation indicate there was a significant impact on some social justice competencies and all targeted content area competencies. Also, students appeared to recognize the benefits of a biblioguidance approach. In light of the outcomes, we celebrate the curriculum's successes and offer suggestions for ongoing improvement.

The oral behavior of drinking includes interactions between the tongue, jaw, and liquid being ingested to provide hydration to the animal. Different mechanisms may be used to ingest liquid such as lapping, licking, or sucking. The objective of the study was to compare the mechanism of lapping across marsupial species through comparison of the length of gape cycle, and the amplitude of jaw pitch and tongue protraction between the two marsupial species, Didelphis virginiana and Monodelphis domestica. Within the mammalian retina, there are melanopsin-containing ganglion cells. These intrinsically photoreceptive cells help control behavioral aspects of vision as well as to aid in circadian rhythms. In this project, it will be determined whether or not glaucoma has an effect on these cells, and what that effect is, from different points in the disease. I argue that philosophy (or the act of philosophizing) should be considered a form of anxiety. I will examine whether or not philosophy should be evaluated as a mental disorder as well. The purpose of this study was to examine potential relationships between cumulative stress exposure in infants in neonatal intensive care units (NICU), as measured using a resting salivary cortisol level at NICU discharge, and the amount (hours per week) or frequency (days per week) of parent presence and skin-to-skin care (SSC). This descriptive study was conducted via a secondary analysis of a dataset representing 78 NICU families from a tertiary level NICU in the Midwest. In this review, we critically summarize up-to-date Raman-based methodologies for red blood cells (RBCs) analysis used in biology and medicine, and compare them with both classical, as well as other spectroscopic and microscopic approaches. Statutory interpretation is a unique legal field that appreciates fiction as much as fact. For years, judges and scholars have acknowledged that canons of interpretation are often based on erudite assumptions of how Congress drafts federal statutes. But a recent surge in legal realism has shown just how erroneous many of these assumptions are. Scholars have created a robust study of congressional practices that challenge many formalist canons of interpretation that are divorced from how Congress thinks about, drafts, and enacts federal statutes. The genus Cricotopus (Diptera: Chironomidae) has a worldwide distribution and possesses a wide variation in ecology and habitat preference across its distribution. Identification of Cricotopus species and distinguishing them from the species of closely related genera (i.e. Orthocladius and Paratrichocladius) are generally difficult. Studies regarding the cinereous vulture (Aegypius monachus), classified globally as near threatened, have recently accelerated in Turkey. Comprehensive studies particularly about the northwestern Anatolian population, have been conducted. Also, the genetic studies carried out, have revealed that the cinereous vulture population in Turkey is panmictic and that it has recently suffered a bottleneck.
