Investigation Of Hazelnut Shells Driven Hard Carbons As Anode For Sodium-Ion Batteriesproduced By Hydrothermal Carbonization Method, Eli̇f Canbaz, Meral Aydin, Rezan Demi̇r Çakan
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
To be used as Na-ion battery anodes, hard carbon electrodes are synthesized from biomass, explicitly hazelnut shell (HS): via hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) followed by further pyrolysis at different temperatures (500, 750, 1000 °C). Then, the resulting hazelnut shell-based hard carbons are investigated using various methods including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, galvanostatic charge/discharge, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The effects of binders (PVdF, Na-alginate, CMC, and PAA) on electrochemical performance are determined. The obtained composite electrodes with different binders are tested in sodium half-cell configurations. A strong correlation is recognized between carbonization temperature and electrochemical performances and structural …

A Retrospective Study Comparing The Effects Of Dynamic Tape In Addition To Treatment On Adults With Upper Extremity Tendinopathy Versus Treatment Alone: A Focus On Elbow Tendinopathy, Lindsey Heaton
OTD DEx Reports - College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences
"Tendinopathy is a common overuse injury in the athletic and working population that is commonly treated with therapeutic tapes. Dynamic Tape (DT) is a biomechanical tape that works mechanically and alters movement patterns to absorb load and re-inject that energy back into the body without limiting range of motion. There is minimal research on the efficacy of DT for elbow tendinopathy. In addition to this, there was not yet a protocol on how to use DT for upper extremity tendinopathies. The researchers used these limitations to design a project with the intent to prove the efficacy of DT as a …

Turkish Journal of Zoology
Frogs can be added to a list of different raw materials which have sustainable economic value to their producers. Therefore, the biochemical attributes of the frogs require further scientific scrutiny. The major objective of the current study is to investigate some biochemical compositions of edible portions of Pelophylax ridibundus (Pallas, 1771) grown in different conditions. The wild frogs, semicultured frogs, and cultured frogs were investigated regarding female and male specimens, leading to six groups that were determined to investigate the biochemical features of frogs. The results show that they (all frogs in all six groups) have low lipid contents (p < 0.05). The protein contents of the frogs varied in the range of 10.54%-16.10%. The lowest ash contents were found in semicultured male and female frogs. The average moisture contents were roughly 80% for all specimens. The major fatty acids were C16:0, C18:0, C18:1n9, C18:2n6, and C20:4n6 for wild, semicultured, and cultured frogs, respectively, for both sexes, showing their respective amounts varied among groups. All in all, the results show that there exist some differences in the nutritional content of frogs grown in different

Time To Stop Pretending We Don’T Know Other Animals Are Sentient Beings, Marc Bekoff
Animal Sentience
Rowan et al.’s target article is an outstanding review of some of the history of the science of sentience, but one would have liked to see a much stronger “call to action.” We don’t need any more data to know that many other animals are sentient beings whose lives must be protected from harm in a wide variety of contexts. It is not anti-science to want more action on behalf of other animals right now.
Overcoming Inertia To Deliver Sentience Policy Commensurate With Sentience Science, Claire Bass
Overcoming Inertia To Deliver Sentience Policy Commensurate With Sentience Science, Claire Bass
Animal Sentience
Rowan et al’s target article makes clear that meaningful change in policy and practice to protect animals has failed to progress in lockstep with scientific understanding of their sentience and needs. The underlying causes for inertia in political and practical progress for animals in the UK context are multi-faceted and complex, including economic forces; lack of cross-departmental accountability for animal welfare; and challenges where it suits conservation scientists to dismiss or downgrade the impacts of management decisions on individual animals. All of these influences and more must be understood and addressed if we are to deliver meaningful and timely protections …

Although microbial populations in the gut microbiome are associated with COVID-19 severity, a causal impact on patient health has not been established. Here we provide evidence that gut microbiome dysbiosis is associated with translocation of bacteria into the blood during COVID-19, causing life-threatening secondary infections. We first demonstrate SARS-CoV-2 infection induces gut microbiome dysbiosis in mice, which correlated with alterations to Paneth cells and goblet cells, and markers of barrier permeability.
