Would Earth Law Change The Face Of Environmental Law In England?, Hetty Summerhayes

Plymouth Law Review

This article aims to compare Environmental Law in England with the established body of Earth Law which currently exists internationally. It provides an analysis of English Law as it applies to marine protection, environmental permitting and wildlife conservation and critically analyses whether they are doing enough to ensure a conservationist regime. Further, it explores the Earth Law movement and how it might influence and change the application of Environmental Law in England. Particular attention is paid to academics and writers such as Christopher Stone, Rachel Carson and Cormac Cullinan. Examining the shift we as human beings must take from an …

Potential Interactions Between Diatoms And Bacteria Are Shaped By Trace Element Gradients In The Southern Ocean, Alexa R. Sterling, Laura Z. Holland, Randelle M. Bundy, Shannon M. Burns, Kristen N. Buck, P. Dreux Chappell, Bethany D. Jenkins

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

The growth of diatoms in the Southern Ocean, especially the region surrounding the West Antarctic Peninsula, is frequently constrained by low dissolved iron and other trace metal concentrations. This challenge may be overcome by mutualisms between diatoms and co-occurring associated bacteria, in which diatoms produce organic carbon as a substrate for bacterial growth, and bacteria produce siderophores, metal-binding ligands that can supply diatoms with metals upon uptake as well as other useful secondary compounds for diatom growth like vitamins. To examine the relationships between diatoms and bacteria in the plankton (diatom) size class (> 3 µm), we sampled both bacterial …

Inclusion And Belonging In Irish Higher Education For Black And Minority Ethnic Students., Fionnuala Darby Jan 2022

Inclusion And Belonging In Irish Higher Education For Black And Minority Ethnic Students., Fionnuala Darby

Articles

Using Critical Race Theory (CRT) as an analytical prism, this study interrogates the sense of belonging and inclusion experienced by Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) students on one higher education campus in Ireland. The most important story told within the study is as simple as it is complicated. The simple part is that the BME students felt that the campus was inclusive and that they experienced a sense of belonging. The complicated part is that the findings are premised in a normative assumption of whiteness as evidenced by numerous and incremental moments of exclusion in the daily experience of microaggressions, …

Democratic Backsliding And Multiracial Democracy. A Response To The 2021 Jorde Symposium Lecture By Steven Levitsky, Tom Ginsburg Jan 2022

Democratic Backsliding And Multiracial Democracy. A Response To The 2021 Jorde Symposium Lecture By Steven Levitsky, Tom Ginsburg

Articles

We live in an anxious era, particularly about the possibility of multiethnic democracy. The polarization of American democracy in general, accelerated by Trumpism in particular, has challenged narratives of race as gradually declining in significance. Instead, conventional wisdom suggests that Trumpism results directly from rising racial resentment of a White population that fears losing its relative power.2 “Dog Whistle Politics” have been discarded in favor of openly nativist appeals, including by media figures such as Tucker Carlson.3

We are not alone. In France, the theory of the Grand Remplacement (Great Replacement) has spread from the fringes to the …

Streaming Property, Lee Anne Fennell Jan 2022

Streaming Property, Lee Anne Fennell

Articles

People acquire property rights in objects and real estate in order to capture the stream of services that these assets can provide over time. The thing or parcel itself is merely a delivery mechanism, a way of packaging and protecting rights to that value stream. And, significantly, these assets cannot stream services to anyone without a set of facilitating conditions and complementary goods, such as public infrastructure, that do not lie within the asset owner’s individual control. This Essay argues that we can gain fresh traction on inequality by recasting property as service streams rather than as owned things. Doing …

Communicating Privilege And Faculty Allyship, Lisa Hanasono, Hyun Kyoung Ro, Deborah A. O'Neil, Ellen M. Broido, Margaret M. Yacobucci, Susana Peña, Karen V. Root

School of Media and Communication Faculty Publications

As individuals who use their privilege to reduce prejudice, educate others about social justice, and actively stop discrimination, faculty allies can play a vital role in transforming universities to be more equitable, diverse, and inclusive. However, discrepancies persist in how faculty define privilege and communicate allyship. Drawing from standpoint theory, we examined discursive divergences in how 105 full-time faculty defined and experienced privilege and how they enacted allyship in the workplace. Participants tended to conceptualize privilege as a set of advantages and lack of structural barriers for people based on their group membership(s). Discursive differences emerged regarding the degree to …

Mathematics Education In Field Education Contexts, Aldinete Silvino De Lima, Iranete Maria Da Silva Lima, Carlos Eduardo Ferreira Monteiro, Liliane Maria Teixeira Lima De Carvalho

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This article approaches the relationship between mathematics education and field education, based on the academic production of the research group on mathematics education in field education contexts (Gpemce) created in 2008 at the Federal University of Pernambuco. After presenting the repercussions and lines of research of the group, we reflect on the roots and principles of field education and some approximations of this domain with mathematics education. Then, we present a documentary study, whose corpus consists of 20 articles published in journals by researchers from Gpemce from 2009 to 2020. These articles are organised around four thematic categories that are …

The Banality Of Evil (?): The Strange(Ly Quiet) Careers Of Korematsu And Hirabayashi In The Federal Circuit Courts, 1943‐2016, Scott Dewey

Articles

Korematsu v. United States (1944) and Hirabayashi v. United States (1943), the most famous Supreme Court cases associated with the tragic internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, now “live in infamy”, along with the likes of Plessy v. Ferguson and Scott v. Sandford, among the worst constitutional law train-wrecks of American legal history. Ironically, American courts and judges also used the two towering internment cases for their resounding language supporting racial equality and non-discrimination. In either guise, the cases came to cast a long shadow over America’s legal landscape. Thus, it may be somewhat surprising to discover that …

Global Healthcare Provider Training Package: Dapivirine Vaginal Ring (Prep Ring), Ipm South Africa

Dapivirine Vaginal Ring (PrEP Ring)

The development of the PrEP Ring was a response to the reality that women remain more likely to acquire HIV than men. HIV is one of the leading causes of death among women ages 15–49 worldwide. HIV incidence is particularly high among young women: in the age range 15–24 years, they are twice as likely to acquire HIV as men of their age, accounting for nearly 25% of new adult infections in sub-Saharan Africa. Biological, economic and sociocultural factors all play a role in increasing women’s chances of acquiring HIV and manifest in practices such as early sexual debut, early …

“Long Covid,” Bodily Systems As Adaaa Major Life Activities, And The Social Model Of Disability, Leslie P. Francis, Michael Ashley Stein Jan 2022

“Long Covid,” Bodily Systems As Adaaa Major Life Activities, And The Social Model Of Disability, Leslie P. Francis, Michael Ashley Stein

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

Long COVID claims for disability-related employment discrimination have been met by physical reductionism during determinations of disability. Difficult to diagnose due to an absence of agreed-upon physiologically observed biomarkers, and liable to elude ADA coverage and/or eligibility for reasonable workplace accommodations, long COVID illustrates a misunderstanding of the relationship between disability, bodily function, and disability anti-discrimination law. Although the ADAAA was intended to extend the range of people considered to be disabled for purposes of disability anti-discrimination law, including bodily system function as a major life activity in the amended statute has contributed to problematic physical reductionism in disability determinations …

Patterns And Process Of Sandbar Revegetation On The Missouri National Recreational Rive, Amena Begum Ruma Jan 2022

Patterns And Process Of Sandbar Revegetation On The Missouri National Recreational Rive, Amena Begum Ruma

Dissertations and Theses

Decades of flow regulation have reduced sandbar area and recruitment of cottonwood and willow along the Missouri River. Conflicts exist between managing sandbars for habitat (removing vegetation) for threatened sandbar-nesting birds (i.e., Piping Plover) and allowing natural recruitment of early successional riparian woodland (set-aside bars) that may support other species and ecological values. Recent changes in topography, geomorphology, and vegetation were examined on sandbars that have been “set aside” from management within seven reaches of the Missouri National Recreational River (MNRR) in southeastern South Dakota, USA. An existing time series of maps of sandbar landcover, derived from satellite imagery, was …

Anhedonia And Impulsivity In College Alcohol Use: A Path Analysis, Sydney N. Stamatovich Jan 2022

Anhedonia And Impulsivity In College Alcohol Use: A Path Analysis, Sydney N. Stamatovich

Dissertations and Theses

This study tested a path model to explore whether different types of anhedonia are associated with alcohol use and problems via different types of impulsivity in 640 college students (ages 18-25). This study parsed anhedonia into four specific facets: consummatory and anticipatory anhedonia, and “recreational” and social anhedonia. Consummatory anhedonia (i.e., the “liking” of a reward) was hypothesized to be associated with alcohol use and problems via sensation seeking, a component of impulsivity where individuals tend to seek out rewarding, yet sometimes risky stimuli. Further, anticipatory anhedonia (i.e., the process of “looking forward to” or “wanting” a reward) was hypothesized …

Influence Of Social Expectations On Muscle Dysmorphia In College-Age Males Studying Exercise Science, Quinten Garver

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

PURPOSE: To investigate the correlation between the risk of an individual developing MD and the presence of unrealistic social expectations. The research question is “How do unrealistic social expectations influence the development of muscle dysmorphia in college-age males studying exercise science?”. METHODS: An electronic survey was distributed to all exercise science students at The University of Akron. This survey was targeted exclusively at male students; any responses received by females were not analyzed. The survey consisted of 20 questions that were aimed at determining the individual’s risk of developing muscle dysmorphia and determining how likely the individual is to have …

The Effects Of Effluent Discharge Into The Santa Fé River, João Vito Bezerra Dragone Jan 2022

The Effects Of Effluent Discharge Into The Santa Fé River, João Vito Bezerra Dragone

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

The discharge of effluents into rivers is something that has occurred a lot throughout our history, rivers like the Mississippi River and the Tiete River (São Paulo, Brazil) have been targets for many years. Therefore, in this paper I choose to show, through hard data and some assumptions, the impact of sewage dumping in water bodies, in this case the Santa Fé River, Florida and the reason why we should avoid dumping these effluents into the rivers.

Monitoring Drug Concentration In Emergency Medicine, Andrew Woods Jan 2022

Monitoring Drug Concentration In Emergency Medicine, Andrew Woods

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

The careful monitoring of a drug’s concentration in the body of a patient is of the utmost importance in modern medicine. Many of the lifesaving medications that are administered in an emergency medicine environment have a narrow window of efficacy. This effective concentration is in an ever-changing state, as the body processes and eliminates exogenous compounds that are introduced to maintain homeostasis. To ensure the proper treatment and/or management of ailments, special attention must be given to the concentration of a given drug in the body as time progresses. These changing concentrations can be evaluated and tracked using the mathematical …

Exploring The Functionality Of Putative Bop3 Post-Translational Modifications, Liliya Tkachuk, Rebecca Adams Phd

[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

All eukaryotic cells require that transcribed mRNAs undergo export form the nucleus to the cytoplasm where they can be translated into proteins. This process requires a host of proteins which are conserved between the unicellular budding yeast, S. cerevisiae, and humans. During this process, Mex67 and other associated proteins facilitate the mRNA to travel across the nuclear pore complex (NPC), doorways embedded in the nuclear envelope. Upon the exit of mRNA, Mex67 is released and recycled back into the nucleus to provide the export of more mRNA. This release occurs through the action of Dbp5, whose activity is regulated …

Isolation And Characterization Of Novel B. Subtilis Bacteriophages, Johnson Phung, Rebecca Adams

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Bacteriophages are viruses that infect bacteria cells. Bacteria, being the most abundant form of life on the planet, have an estimated ten to a hundred different types of bacteriophages that infect each species. Bacteriophages are everywhere on Earth, but the number of phages that have been identified is only a fraction of what are thought to exist. This project focuses on isolating and identifying phages that infect the bacterium Bacillus subtilis. B subtilis is a decomposition microbe commonly found in the soil. Our first goal was to determine whether the 3 samples of Bacillus subtilis phages that were previously …
