Resilience Of Working Agricultural Landscapes, Shana Sundstrom, Jennifer Hodbod, Craig R. Allen
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Many alternative agricultural approaches have been developed as a response to the social and ecological costs of modern industrialized agriculture. These include diversified, organic, sustainably intensified, and ecologically intensified farming systems, each of which addresses different aspects of agriculture as a social-ecological system. However, clear theoretical models that account for human-nature coupling and the importance of scale are lacking. Global change, including climate change, land use change, and other human activities influencing social-ecological systems, is exacerbating uncertainty regarding agriculture system dynamics and increasing the need for comprehensive models that include a dynamical integration of socio-ecological-economic influences. Resilience theory and related …

Remnant Prairies And High-Diversity Restorations Work Together To Support Wild Bees Season-Long, Katie Lamke, David A. Wedin, Judy Wu-Smart
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
The presence of diverse bee communities in an ecosystem is vital for maintaining healthy plant communities, promoting habitat resilience, and supporting agriculture. In the US, wild bee declines have led to increased monitoring efforts, but there remain critical data gaps in much of the Midwest. Here, we sought to examine how variation in richness and abundance of flowering forbs influences the richness and abundance of wild bees across “remnant” tallgrass prairies, “high diversity” prairie restorations, and “low diversity” prairie restorations or degraded grasslands in eastern Nebraska. High-diversity plots attracted no bees in the early season due to a lack of …

Daily Activity Patterns Among Apex Predators In The Northwest United States, Sydney M. Romps
Daily Activity Patterns Among Apex Predators In The Northwest United States, Sydney M. Romps
Celebration of Student Scholarship
The gray wolf [Canis lupus], brown bear [Ursus arctos], and American black bear [Ursus americanus], are all ecologically interesting because they are all apex predators that exist in the same spaces in the United States. However, little research has been done after wolf reintroduction in many parts of the western U.S. to see if these three predators will change their daily activity patterns around each other. The goal of this research project was to see whether the daily activity patterns of the gray wolf, brown bear, and American black bear differ, and it was …
Lake Superior Drowning In Microplastics, Grace Krajenka, Mackenzie Jonas, Aaron Busiel, Jordon Brown
Lake Superior Drowning In Microplastics, Grace Krajenka, Mackenzie Jonas, Aaron Busiel, Jordon Brown
Celebration of Student Scholarship
Billions of microplastic particles litter the shores and waters of Lake Superior. However, the ecological impact of microplastics on the flora and fauna of Lake Superior have not been fully realized. Microplastic saturation of our waterways affects us by suffocating our natural ecosystems and contaminating our food and water sources. Beyond monitoring, however, research relating to potential solutions remains limited. Our goal is to encourage continued research into the ecological impacts of microplastics in the Lake Superior ecosystem, while increasing awareness in the community about microplastic contamination. To accomplish our goal, we conducted an extensive literature review to examine the …
Ecological Impacts Of Invasive Species, Nadia S. Finley, Lorie L. Thompson, Shannon A. Ehrlich, Kendall J. Phillips
Ecological Impacts Of Invasive Species, Nadia S. Finley, Lorie L. Thompson, Shannon A. Ehrlich, Kendall J. Phillips
Celebration of Student Scholarship
Nearly 6,500 nonnative species are present in the United States and are responsible for the extinction of over 760 native species. The introduction of invasive species is ongoing and the ecological ramifications of these invasions are diverse but could include competition between invasive and native species, disruption of natural ecological processes, and reduced ecosystem services. While invasive species are able to severely damage vital ecosystems, there are methods of predicting and lessening the impacts. Our goal is to educate our campus community about the impact of invasive species on native ecosystems, including the dangers of invasive species, and how we …
Plasma And Fecal Cortisol Metabolite Concentrations Following An Acth Challenge In Captive Brown Bears (Ursus Arctos)., Justin A. Pinero, Diana Jr Lafferty
Plasma And Fecal Cortisol Metabolite Concentrations Following An Acth Challenge In Captive Brown Bears (Ursus Arctos)., Justin A. Pinero, Diana Jr Lafferty
Celebration of Student Scholarship
Fecal cortisol metabolites (FCMs) are increasingly used to index physiological stress in wildlife. Cortisol and other glucocorticoids (GCs) act to mobilize glucose, providing immediate energy to respond to environmental perturbations. Cortisol, the predominant GC in most mammals, is metabolized by the liver and excreted as FCMs in feces. However, for FCMs to serve as a meaningful physiological index, we must understand the link between circulating stress hormone levels in the blood that impact host physiology and expression of measurable fecal hormone metabolites. Thus, my goal is to quantify the link between blood cortisol and FCM concentration. To achieve my goal, …

Genetic Analysis Of Crispr/Cas9 Basigin Knockout T98 Glioblastoma Clones, Mia J. Strazny, Robert J. Belton Jr, Amy Abel
Celebration of Student Scholarship
The focus of the research in our laboratory is the transmembrane glycoprotein basigin. This interesting, multifunctional protein is involved in multiple cell processes, including embryonic development, embryo implantation into the uterus and metabolic regulation. Early studies demonstrated that basigin expression is elevated in rapidly growing cells such as cancer cells. This work suggested that releasing soluble basigin might stimulate the surrounding normal tissues to express a group of enzymes called extracellular matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). MMPs play a central role in proliferation by breaking down the extracellular matrix surrounding layers of cells. We hypothesize that basigin expressed by cancer cells can …
Using Thioflavin T As A Biosensor For The Detection Of Nucleic Acid Secondary Structures, Caitlyn B. Nunn, Philip Yangyuoru
Using Thioflavin T As A Biosensor For The Detection Of Nucleic Acid Secondary Structures, Caitlyn B. Nunn, Philip Yangyuoru
Celebration of Student Scholarship
The purpose of this ongoing research project was to learn more about the compound Thioflavin T by developing methods using a UV/Vis spectrophotometer to study how this molecule interacts with other biomolecules. Thioflavin T (ThT), is a fluorescent dye that can bind proteins and nucleic acids and can be used to probe protein aggregation and unique nucleic acid secondary structures. It can be used as a biosensor to detect specific abnormal proteins called amyloid fibrils in biological samples. In this project, we will investigate how thioflavin T interacts with different nucleic acid secondary structures with the goal of developing a …
Importance Of Reference Points In Orientation In A Current By Juvenile Mummichog (Fundulus Heteroclitus), Ryan C. Heines, Jill Leonard
Importance Of Reference Points In Orientation In A Current By Juvenile Mummichog (Fundulus Heteroclitus), Ryan C. Heines, Jill Leonard
Celebration of Student Scholarship
Recent studies on the dispersal-relevant behavior of marine fish larvae suggest that they possess the behavioral capabilities necessary to directly affect dispersal outcomes. Current research has shifted to determining to what extent larvae and young juveniles can manage their dispersal, as well as what sensory cues they can use for orientation and settlement. There is little contemporary data to suggest that larvae can detect the speed and direction of current without an external reference, which suggests that they lack control over their trajectories and eventual settlement location. The mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus) is a species of marine killifish that …
Integration Of Multiple Datasets To Evaluate Red Fox Distribution, Laura S. Whipple, Diana Jr Lafferty
Integration Of Multiple Datasets To Evaluate Red Fox Distribution, Laura S. Whipple, Diana Jr Lafferty
Celebration of Student Scholarship
To address declining global biodiversity, large-scale and long-term standardized wildlife surveys allow biologists to directly compare data across time and space to identify drivers of species declines. However, standardized surveys are resource-intensive, often leading to significant data gaps. One source of abundant and inexpensive data are wildlife observations from the public (e.g., community/citizen science). When combined, community observations can provide wildlife data from areas that lack high-quality survey data, while standardized surveys can account for the opportunistic nature that makes community observations difficult to use in wildlife studies. Therefore, integrating high-quality survey data with abundant community observations may produce more …
