New urbanism is a response to prevent the decline and erosion of settlements, attention to local and regional capacity, and return to identity. Villages are in constant contact and interaction with the city, and this interaction is ongoing in all areas. Undoubtedly, rural development is not possible in all social, economic, managerial, and physical dimensions, regardless of the city. The study aims to implement the principles of urbanism in Ardabil based on the performance of surrounding rural settlements in the framework of modern urban planning. Accordingly, a questionnaire was prepared. The components include managerial, physical, socio-cultural, economic, and environmental components. …

Teaching Dna Extractions From Fruits (Strawberry, Banana, Kiwi, And Watermelon), Amadea Pourier, Dillon Nelson, Wiyaka Pomarleau, Kay Cutler, Madhav P. Nepal
iLEARN Teaching Resources
In this lesson, students will use a simple DNA extraction solution and isopropyl alcohol to extract DNA from strawberries, banana, kiwi, and watermelon. The extraction solution consists of dish detergent, water, and table salt. Grinding or crushing the soft fruit tissue will separate the cells. The dish detergent breaks down the membranes, exposing the DNA to the solution. The salt helps the DNA molecule to stick together from the proteins. The cold alcohol dissolves everything but the DNA, which forms an insoluble layer of the DNA allowing it to be visible.

Cells elaborate transcriptional programs in response to external signals. In the peripheral nerves, Schwann cells (SC) sort axons of given caliber and start the process of wrapping their membrane around them. We identify Actin-like protein 6a (ACTL6a), part of SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling complex, as critical for the integration of axonal caliber recognition with the transcriptional program of myelination. Nuclear levels of ACTL6A in SC are increased by contact with large caliber axons or nanofibers, and result in the eviction of repressive histone marks to facilitate myelination. Without Actl6a the SC are unable to coordinate caliber recognition and myelin production. Peripheral …

Isotopic Study Of The Waters From The Sulphur Springs Catchment, Tampa, Florida, Esra Zengin
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A stable isotope study was carried out using precipitation, spring water, groundwater well sample, and a seawater sample during the wet season in the Sulphur Springs watershed in Tampa, Florida. Studies that track long term isotopic variation over wet seasons are limited in the region. To fill this knowledge gap, this study aims to quantify the contributions of precipitation and diffuse sources to discharge in Sulphur Springs. A three-component mixing model was applied using δ18O and δ2H values to determine different source water contributions to spring water discharge. The three-component mixing model calculations suggest spring water consists mainly of diffuse …
Inhibition Of Cell Adhesion And Actin Localization During Migration Upon Protective Antigen Mutant Ligand Binding To The Capillary Morphogenesis Gene 2, Sai Lun Lee
Theses and Dissertations
Capillary Morphogenesis Gene 2 protein (CMG2) is a type 1 transmembrane receptor known as the anthrax toxin receptor 2 (ANTXR2). While it is documented that the cell surface receptor CMG2 mediates anthrax toxin entry into the cell via endocytosis, the physiological role of CMG2 is not well understood. Others have suggested that CMG2 may have a role in mediating ECM homeostasis and angiogenesis. Additionally, both anthrax protective antigen (PA) and a furin protease-resistant mutant, PASSSR, inhibit corneal neovascularization in a mouse model, and interestingly PASSSR has a greater affinity to CMG2 receptor. PASSSRalso has a more potent antiangiogenic effect than …

The Effect Of Clay On The Inhibitory Effect Of Mustard Seed Meal On Velvetleaf Seedling Growth, Heeyun Oh
The Effect Of Clay On The Inhibitory Effect Of Mustard Seed Meal On Velvetleaf Seedling Growth, Heeyun Oh
Honors Theses
Mustard seed meal (MSM) has been studied as a biofumigant in suppressing weed growth in an organic-friendly way. Previous studies have shown that MSM in the presence of elevated sand content was highly effective in suppressing the germination of velvetleaf seeds, and that as clay/silt in sand content increased, MSM effectiveness decreased in suppressing seed germination. Based on these results, it was postulated that clay may have effects on MSM by inhibiting this biofumigant from suppressing weed growth. Two different types of pure clay--kaolin and montmorillonite--were selected with their increasing concentrations. Low concentrations of clay do not seem to influence …

Estuaries may be uniquely susceptible to the combined acidification pressures of atmospherically driven ocean acidification (OA), biologically driven CO2 inputs from the estuary itself, and terrestrially derived freshwater inputs. This study utilized continuous measurements of total alkalinity (TA) and the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) from the mouth of Great Bay, a temperate northeastern U.S. estuary, to examine the potential influences of endmember mixing and biogeochemical transformation upon estuary buffering capacity (β–H). Observations were collected hourly over 28 months representing all seasons between May 2016 and December 2019. Results indicated that endmember mixing explained most of the observed variability …

Spin Interactions In New Donor-Acceptor Complexes, Ju Chen
Spin Interactions In New Donor-Acceptor Complexes, Ju Chen
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
Transition metal complexes ligated by Donor-Acceptor (D-A) biradicals are of interest for probing the degree of electronic coupling between chemically biased radical fragments. The unique nature of their electronic coupling has allowed these systems to serve as ground state analogues of charge separated excited states generated by photoexcitation. We have been interested in how the nature of the acceptor radical affects the magnitude of the electronic coupling matrix element in these biradicals. As such, we have synthesized a new series of D-A semiquinone-verdazyl (SQ-VD) biradical ligands and their transition metal complexes. We have characterized these new complexes by x-ray crystallography, …

The Consequences Of Climate Change For Native Bee Assemblages, Melanie R. Kazenel
The Consequences Of Climate Change For Native Bee Assemblages, Melanie R. Kazenel
Biology ETDs
Recent declines in terrestrial arthropod biodiversity highlight the need to pinpoint which taxa and ecosystem services are most threatened, and why. But, for most of the world’s ~20,000 bee species, we lack robust evidence of population trends, and the role of climate change remains surprisingly little studied. I used long-term bee monitoring data from the Sevilleta Long-Term Ecological Research Program (Socorro, NM, USA), along with complementary experimental and observational data, to examine how climate relates to bee abundance and diversity patterns over time and space, and to identify the traits that govern bees’ climate sensitivities. Under climate change, drylands worldwide …

Dental Management Of A Patient With Systemic Mastocytosis, Alexander Richard Legge, Andrew Whyte, Simon Heywood
More Faculty of Health Research
Mastocytosis is a term encompassing a group of clinical disorders characterised by clonal proliferation of abnormal mast cells (MCs) in organ systems of the body. Mastocytosis can be systemic (with or without skin involvement) or cutaneous, and can affect organs including bone marrow, liver, spleen, lymph nodes and mucosal surfaces. Patients with systemic mastocytosis (SM) are susceptible to triggers that could cause activation of abnormal MCs, resulting in multiorgan dysfunction and life-threatening anaphylactic reactions. Mastocytosis has a number of ramifications for the dental management of a patient with the condition. Patients are at increased risk of complications due to a …

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) results in a cascade of cellular responses, which produce neuroinflammation, partly due to the activation of microglia. Accurate identification of microglial populations is key to understanding therapeutic approaches that modify microglial responses to TBI and improve long-term outcome measures. Notably, previous studies often utilized an outdated convention to describe microglial phenotypes. We conducted a temporal analysis of the response to controlled cortical impact (CCI) in rat microglia between ipsilateral and contralateral hemispheres across seven time points, identified microglia through expression of activation markers including CD45, CD11b/c, and p2y12 receptor and evaluated their activation state using additional …

Inflammatory conditions represent the largest class of chronic skin disease, but the molecular dysregulation underlying many individual cases remains unclear. Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) has increased precision in dissecting the complex mixture of immune and stromal cell perturbations in inflammatory skin disease states. We single-cell-profiled CD45+ immune cell transcriptomes from skin samples of 31 patients (7 atopic dermatitis, 8 psoriasis vulgaris, 2 lichen planus (LP), 1 bullous pemphigoid (BP), 6 clinical/histopathologically indeterminate rashes, and 7 healthy controls). Our data revealed active proliferative expansion of the Treg and Trm components and universal T cell exhaustion in human rashes, with a relative …

Enhancing Melatonin Secretion: The Methodical Consumption Of Tryptophan From Whole Cow’S Milk To Regulate Sleep Quality In Individuals Aged 18-30 With Delayed Sleep-Wake Phase Disorder, Shraddha Patel
Virginias Collegiate Honors Council Conference
Young adults in the United States are increasingly affected by DSPD (delayed sleep-wake phase disorder), a circadian rhythm disorder that delays evening sleep and morning wake times. Although medicinal supplements have shown to produce effective results on sleep induction, they come with unwanted side-effects. A review of the literature on clinical nutrition and endocrinology suggests that dietary alterations through the timed consumption of tryptophan-abundant whole cow’s milk could be a supplemental means of improving sleep quality. Studies on chrono nutrition indicate that dietary components absorbed by the bloodstream can change the circadian schedule of melatonin secretion from the pineal gland, …

Thq Synthesis, Formation Of Aerogels For Co2 Capture, Joey Gloriod
Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T
The accelerated increase of carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere over the modern era damages natural ecosystems through ocean acidification and global warming. As such, carbon capture is an essential tool for regulating CO2 levels from rising further, or, ideally, decreasing the carbon footprint overall. This project's goal is to formulate new materials for high capacity and selective CO2 adsorption. The material of focus is polymerized from the newly synthesized tetrahydroquinazoline (THQ) monomer. THQ is prepared in a four-step synthesis and polymerized through an acid catalyzed ring-opening mechanism. The PTHQ wet gels are then dried in an autoclave …
Nutrient Release From Aquatic Plants, Michaela Quinones
Nutrient Release From Aquatic Plants, Michaela Quinones
Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T
Eutrophication is among the greatest threats to global freshwater. Methods such as floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) utilize aquatic plants to remove excess nutrients directly from the water column. However, plants senesce or die off seasonally, releasing nutrients back into the water. The harvesting of plant tissues can be employed to remove nutrients from the system more permanently. The effectiveness of these strategies is dependent on the amount of nutrients a senesced or dying plant releases. This study submerged four common Missouri macrophytes in conditions that prompted senescence and examined the nutrient concentrations over time. The amount of nutrients released varied …
Insecticide Metabolic Responses Of Two Lepidoptera, John Sneed
Insecticide Metabolic Responses Of Two Lepidoptera, John Sneed
Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T
Soybean loopers (Chrysodeixis includens) and corn earworms (Helicoverpa zea) are moth pests of soybean and corn fields across the United States, including Missouri. Here, we assessed their toxic and metabolic responses to cypermethrin, a pyrethroid insecticide registered for foliar use in agriculture.
An analysis of literature studies and generation of preliminary dose-response curves in the laboratory indicated that, although corn earworms and soybean loopers belong to the same lepidopteran family (Noctuidae), they show different susceptibilities to topically applied cypermethrin. To assess if metabolic factors are responsible for these differences, we undertook synergistic studies with PBO, TPP, and DEM, which are …

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a serious problem affecting soldiers in training and during deployment. Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) accounts for over 80% of the TBIs recorded in soldiers in the last two decades. While symptoms may be mild initially, subjection to continued mTBIs could result in severe comorbidities appearing years later. Examination of current research available on mTBI shows an overwhelming skewing of murine animal models used as being solely male and of one age. With age and sex being known to have an affect on TBI, this project set out to explore the differences in severity in various …
