Study Proposal For Additional Investigation Of Epac1 In Endothelial Apoptosis, Anh Luu Apr 2022

Study Proposal For Additional Investigation Of Epac1 In Endothelial Apoptosis, Anh Luu

ONU Student Research Colloquium

Inflammatory states such as sepsis are associated with elevated tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-⍺), which facilitates inflammation, increases the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative stress, and contributes to death of endothelial cells (EC). Exchange Factor Directly Activated by cAMP (EPAC1) is an intracellular cyclic-AMP (cAMP) sensor involved in EC responses such as barrier function, angiogenesis and proliferation. Previous studies in our lab demonstrated activation of EPAC1 protected EC from TNF⍺-induced cell death. Specifically, microvascular EC were pretreated for 45 minutes with 100 mM 8-pCPT-2′-O-Me-cAMP (8CPT, specific EPAC1 activator) or 10 mM forskolin (adenylyl cyclase activator that increases …

Assessing Benthic Macroinvertebrate Community Response To Dam Removal And Restoration Rattlesnake Creek, Montana, Samuel Brian Turner Apr 2022

Assessing Benthic Macroinvertebrate Community Response To Dam Removal And Restoration Rattlesnake Creek, Montana, Samuel Brian Turner

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Dam removal is increasingly used to restore stream ecosystems, however the ecological effects of this type of restorative action is under-studied. Benthic macroinvertebrates are commonly used as biological indicators of stream integrity when monitoring stream restorations. This study assesses the response of benthic macroinvertebrates to a small dam removal in Rattlesnake Creek, Montana. We examined benthic macroinvertebrate data collected from 2019-2021 to determine variation in community abundance and composition upstream, downstream, before and after dam removal and restoration. Macroinvertebrate community metrics were assessed, in relation to Montana specific biological and ecological integrity measures, to gain insight into the current states …

Even More Lesser Spotted Animals, Amanda Morgan Apr 2022

Even More Lesser Spotted Animals, Amanda Morgan

Children's Book and Media Review

Meet the underdogs of the animal kingdom. they're not as praised as lions, tigers and other big shot mammals, but this book is here to show you why they should be. The dingiso basically looks like a living breathing teddy bear and can jump to the ground from a 60 foot tree without receiving injury. The forest musk deer, unlike real deer, hangs out in trees. The little yellow-throated marten which, as the name suggests, has bright yellow fur, can take down an entire deer. The gerenuk and the dibatags are antelope with necks like giraffes. In learning about all …

Assessing The Effect Time And Burial Environment Have On The Use Of The Lamendin Dental Age Estimation Method In Two Archaeological Samples From Jordan, Sabrina L. Williamson Apr 2022

Assessing The Effect Time And Burial Environment Have On The Use Of The Lamendin Dental Age Estimation Method In Two Archaeological Samples From Jordan, Sabrina L. Williamson

LSU Master's Theses

The Lamendin method is a dental age estimation method that can be used by biological anthropologists when the skeletal anatomy is not available. The Lamendin method utilizes an index derived from measurements of the tooth root height (RH), periodontal line height (PLH), and root transparency height (RTH) to estimate the age of an individual. Although this method is often used in forensic contexts, its presence in the bioarcheological literature is almost non-existent. Research that mentions the Lamendin method conflict about whether the method can be used in specimens with longer postmortem intervals (PMIs) and in various depositional environments. This study …

Efficient Low Dimensional Representation Of Vector Gaussian Distributions, Md Mahmudul Hasan Apr 2022

Efficient Low Dimensional Representation Of Vector Gaussian Distributions, Md Mahmudul Hasan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation seeks to find optimal graphical tree model for low dimensional representation of vector Gaussian distributions. For a special case we assumed that the population co-variance matrix $\Sigma_x$ has an additional latent graphical constraint, namely, a latent star topology. We have found the Constrained Minimum Determinant Factor Analysis (CMDFA) and Constrained Minimum Trace Factor Analysis (CMTFA) decompositions of this special $\Sigma_x$ in connection with the operational meanings of the respective solutions. Characterizing the CMDFA solution of special $\Sigma_x$, according to the second interpretation of Wyner's common information, is equivalent to solving the source coding problem of finding the minimum …

Intermittent Fasting As Adjuvant To Topical Therapy In The Management Of Mild To Moderate Psoriasis, Grace Queiroz Apr 2022

Intermittent Fasting As Adjuvant To Topical Therapy In The Management Of Mild To Moderate Psoriasis, Grace Queiroz

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Psoriasis is a common chronic inflammatory skin condition with no known cure. Intermittent fasting involves limiting caloric intake to designated time periods and decreases markers of systemic inflammation, but the clinical efficacy of intermittent fasting for patients with psoriasis remains unclear. We propose a randomized controlled clinical trial to investigate the clinical impact of adjunctive intermittent fasting on plaque psoriasis. Patients with mild to moderate plaque psoriasis will be managed with topical calcipotriene/betamethasone dipropionate cream and randomized to either practice daily intermittent fasting with an 8-hour eating window or practice a diet without time restriction. We hypothesize that patients engaging …

In light of climate change, coastal gentrification, localism, and discrepancies in shellfish regulatory structures, access to coastal shellfish harvesting areas has become increasingly complex for tribal communities throughout Maine. This report is a comprehensive analysis of municipal shellfish regulatory structures and their impact on limiting clam-harvesting access for indigneous peoples in coastal Maine. Our work is in tandem with Manomet and the Maine Shellfish Learning Network (MSLN) with the aim of accumulating historical and contemporary knowledge of regulations that govern access to coastal resources, with the understanding to apply that knowledge to help promote a more inclusive framework for coastal …

Chromatin Architecture: Mechanisms Of Gene Regulation, Logan O'Donnell Apr 2022

Chromatin Architecture: Mechanisms Of Gene Regulation, Logan O'Donnell

Honors Projects in Science and Technology

The rapid growth and division of cells as they proliferate and penetrate to surrounding tissues defines the collection of disease states known as cancer. Abnormal gene expression drives this uncontrollable replication of cells. In recent studies, aberrant HOX gene expression has been noted in a multitude of cancer types such as myeloid leukemia, prostate cancer, and breast cancer [1]. Within cancerous cells with aberrant HOX expression, late expressing HOX genes are suppressed while early expressing HOX genes are reactivated. HOX genes are significant in controlling early phases of organismal development such as cell cycle, cell movement, and gene expression. Likewise, …

How Does Prey Type Affect Pitcher Plant, Sarracenia Purpurea, Microbial Community Function?, Stacey Pedraza, Jessica Bernardin, Leonora Bittleston

2022 Undergraduate Research Showcase

Microbial communities are formed by groups of microorganisms, which impact the earth’s ecosystems. The way these organisms interact and function significantly affects how nutrients and energy move through our ecosystems. Discovering, analyzing, and defining the functions carried out by microbial communities can help reveal how ecosystems shift with changing conditions. However, it’s a challenge to analyze and track microbial community interactions or functions within large ecosystems. Focusing and analyzing the microbial communities in small ecosystems first, will help to study larger ecosystems. This study uses the small-scale ecosystem of the carnivorous pitcher plant, Sarracenia purpurea, to investigate microbial community …

Environmental Political Theory: Georgia, Sophie Wieland Apr 2022

Environmental Political Theory: Georgia, Sophie Wieland

Undergraduate Research Symposium 2022

Perceptions of the environment are based on individuals’ experiences and values. This work, in the subfield of environmental political theory, seeks to understand why people hold the environmental beliefs that they do. Through a literature review, the beliefs of two hypothetical citizens of the country of Georgia were deduced based on the economic, political, and environmental history of Georgia. I hypothesized the likely values and experiences of an Azeri pharmacist and Georgian casino dealer, concluding that the power structure of Georgia would privilege the Georgian casino dealer. The Azeri pharmacist is likely of a lower socioeconomic status, is more tied …

Non-Native Coccinellid Beetles And Land Use Abundance Patterns In The Quad Cities Region, Jack Hughes, Tierney Brosius, Michael Reisner

Biology: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

Harmonia axyridis was introduced in 1916. This species of coccinellid beetle is considered a desirable species for agriculture practices because of its ability to control pests. There is increasing evidence that H. axyridis may be outcompeting native species which could be contributing to the decline of some species that are disappearing from the landscape. Harmonia axyridis has a large migration range of 2 Km enabling the species to affect a large area of land. Invasive species often increase in abundance in urban landscapes which may be the case with H. axyridis. During the summer of 2021 we investigated H. axyridis …

The Impact Of Career And Interpersonal Relationships On Subjective Well-Being, Melissa Lomuscio

Honors Projects in Applied Psychology

My thesis explores the concepts of career and interpersonal relationships and their impact on subjective well-being. Career and interpersonal relationships are two of the most time-consuming and important aspects of human life. Given this, they have some of the largest influences on our well-being and levels of happiness. In order to understand how to use these two variables to positively impact our well-being, we must first understand their role in our well-being in general and how they affect it. For this thesis, I explore this relationship through a series of 32 interviews, where interviewees are asked about their career paths …

Covid-19 In Boise Sewage Anticipates Hospitalizations And Deaths By 1-2 Weeks, Erin Milliken, Ernie Ogden, Lexi Skinner, Minu Kesheri, Nida Ajmal, Greg Hampikian

2022 Undergraduate Research Showcase

COVID-19 virus concentration in Boise sewage predicts rises in clinical cases, hospitalizations and deaths. This is done through wastewater-based epidemiology, which provides a convenient and rapid method of testing pooled samples from over 200,000 residents. Wastewater viral counts prepare health care services for spikes in cases. COVID-19 continues to be a major health concern as it undergoes mutations, resulting in new variants that have produced several spikes in COVID-19 cases over the past two years. Spikes can cause care shortages in testing, treatment and hospitalization. Wastewater testing (unlike patient testing) can detect asymptomatic infections and symptomatic non-testing individuals, leading to …

Stress And Social Support Of Foster Parents During Covid-19, Carlie Mcniff

21st Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2022)

Foster parents provide crucial care to hundreds of thousands of children in the U.S., and with their role comes a variety of challenges. They face a great amount of stress which is why the turnover rate is high, and there is a critical need for more foster parents. Uncertainty is a large component of the foster care system, and the COVID-19 pandemic heightened this. It is unknown how stress that foster parents have experienced during this time was affected, and this study seeks to explore that. Additionally, this study focuses on types and sources of social support of foster parents …

Effects Of Urbanization On House Sparrow (Passer Domesticus) And House Finch (Haemorhous Mexicanus) Song Propagation, Sarah Grimes, Eliza Lewis Apr 2022

Effects Of Urbanization On House Sparrow (Passer Domesticus) And House Finch (Haemorhous Mexicanus) Song Propagation, Sarah Grimes, Eliza Lewis

21st Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2022)

The recent surge in urbanization has increased pollution, which includes both physical pollution (e.g. exhaust) and sensory pollution (e.g., anthropogenic noise). We know birds increase the frequency and amplitude of their song in urban areas to reduce masking by low frequency noise pollution. However, bird song (i.e., a signal) is also affected by the environment and accompanying ambient noise. This study investigates how anthropogenic disturbances alter the ability of birds to communicate. Specifically, we aim to understand how urbanization affects the propagation of bird song by examining differences in active space, or the maximum distance a receiver can detect a …

Changes In Chromatic Contrast Of Avian Plumage In Forests With Different Levels Of Deer Browsing, Morgan Sherrard, Suihnem Mawi, Timothy Boycott, Megan Gall

21st Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2022)

Visual signal propagation through the environment can be influenced by many factors, including the visual background. For example, normally camouflaged animals can appear quite salient when the environmental substrate is changed. Deer can alter this visual background by consuming the forest understory; ultimately this can have implications for species that use visual signals to attract a mate or defend a territory. We are interested in studying how deer browsing affects the chromatic contrast (i.e., how much an animal stands out from the background for a given receiver) using an avian model system. Brown headed cowbirds (Molothrus ater) and wild turkeys …
