Removing Of Erroneous Penicillin Allergy Labels (Repeal), Neil Powell Jan 2026

Removing Of Erroneous Penicillin Allergy Labels (Repeal), Neil Powell

School of Biomedical Sciences Theses

BackgroundPenicillin allergy records are common; 15% of hospital inpatients report a penicillin allergy record, but the majority, estimated to be >95%, can take penicillin after formal testing. Penicillin allergy records are associated with several patient, healthcare-system and wider societal harms thought to be due to the avoidance of non-penicillin antibiotics, which are often first line for common infections. Testing patients with penicillin allergy records and removing them if they test negative is called penicillin allergy de-labelling and is traditionally the role of allergists. More recently, non-allergy healthcare workers have been shown to be able to safely remove low risk penicillin …

Human Vaccine Hesitancy Spillover In The Field Of Veterinary Medicine: A Systematic Narrative Review Of Impacts And Veterinary Responses, Allison Schimpf

HEAL Project Outputs

Human vaccine hesitancy spillover in the veterinary field is a relatively new concept that has gained traction since the COVID-19 pandemic. Concerns about vaccine safety have increased among pet owners leading to questions about the potential impacts of reduced vaccination and how veterinarians can address these attitudes. A systematic search strategy following PRISMA 2020 guidelines was used with 3 different databases to collect peer-reviewed research articles from 2022 until now. The initial search yielded 376 articles for review and 11 were included after screening. Articles were analyzed using a narrative review format. Results showed that pet owners are more vaccine …

The Effects Of Surf Film Viewing As A Dialectical Behavior Therapy-Aligned Intervention For Trauma-Related Symptoms, Ryan Papero Jan 2026

The Effects Of Surf Film Viewing As A Dialectical Behavior Therapy-Aligned Intervention For Trauma-Related Symptoms, Ryan Papero

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

This study examined whether viewing a surf film aligned with Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) principles would reduce emotion dysregulation among trauma-exposed adults. Participants (N = 14) with self-reported childhood trauma were randomly assigned to view either The Endless Summer or a neutral industrial documentary. Emotion regulation was assessed using pre- and post-intervention Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) scores. An independent samples t-test comparing change scores indicated that the control group demonstrated a greater mean reduction in DERS scores (M = 6.13, SD = 5.22) than the surf group (M = 2.50, SD = 3.08); however, this difference was not …

The Effects Of A Thiamine Treatment On The Growth, Survival, And Foraging Behavior Of Thiamine-Deficient Michigan Lake Trout (Salvelinus Namaycush), Allie J. Muschong Jan 2026

The Effects Of A Thiamine Treatment On The Growth, Survival, And Foraging Behavior Of Thiamine-Deficient Michigan Lake Trout (Salvelinus Namaycush), Allie J. Muschong

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

The Great Lakes top predator Salvelinus namaycush (lake trout) suffers from Thiamine Deficiency Complex (TDC), which causes neurological problems and inhibits survival in young lake trout. The lake trout population in northern Lake Michigan experiences insufficient natural recruitment, necessitating yearly stocking. Few treatments have been explored, but preliminary studies in a hatchery setting suggest that increasing tissue thiamine promotes survival; thus, we expected a novel thiamine treatment to boost the foraging rate and weight of lake trout fry. We raised the eggs of six wild lake trout pairs, and applied treatments at both the egg stage and the hatch stage. …

A Phosphorylation Study Of Serine-8 And 26 In Two Fragments Of Amyloid Beta, A Peptide Involved In Alzheimer's Disease And Cancer, Colby J. Merrill Jan 2026

A Phosphorylation Study Of Serine-8 And 26 In Two Fragments Of Amyloid Beta, A Peptide Involved In Alzheimer's Disease And Cancer, Colby J. Merrill

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Both cancer and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) affect many people in the United States and impact the families of patients suffering from these challenging illnesses. Recently, it has been reported that these two diseases share several key pathophysiological features, and an inverse relationship exists between them. These diseases share several biochemical modulators, most notably the amyloid-beta protein, which affects tissues in both AD and cancer by misfolding and aggregating. Phosphorylation is believed to regulate the aggregation and toxicity of amyloid-beta by altering the protein's shape and charge, thereby changing its interactions with cells. Phosphorylation can also toggle some proteins on and …

The Impact Of Michigan's Public Act 308 On Foster Care Outcomes: A Synthetic Control Analysis, Maruis D. Martello Jan 2026

The Impact Of Michigan's Public Act 308 On Foster Care Outcomes: A Synthetic Control Analysis, Maruis D. Martello

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

This paper evaluates the impact of Michigan’s 2014 Public Act 308 on foster care adoption outcomes. By converting traditional adoption subsidies into dynamic, redeterminable contracts, the policy aimed to reduce the financial uncertainty associated with adopting children with latent or evolving special needs. Using data from the Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System (AFCARS) from 2000 to 2022, we implement a generalized synthetic control method to account for unobserved time-varying heterogeneity. We find that the policy had no statistically significant impact on the aggregate adoption rate. However, it generated significant gains within targeted subpopulations, increasing the probability of …

Integrating Computational Modeling And Experimental Analysis To Characterize Autophagosome Size And Number., Rakan A. Alnsour Jan 2026

Integrating Computational Modeling And Experimental Analysis To Characterize Autophagosome Size And Number., Rakan A. Alnsour

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Autophagy is a key cellular recycling process that helps cells maintain homeostasis and survive stress by breaking down damaged organelles and misfolded proteins. When autophagy is disrupted, it contributes to diseases such as cancer, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease, so getting accurate measurements of autophagosome size and number is important for understanding how this pathway works. In this project, we are working on improving a computational model in CompuCell3D that simulates how autophagic bodies clump inside the yeast vacuole, which we later compare to real transmission electron microscopy images. We generated starting files with defined body numbers and sizes, simulated …

Open Educational Resources

This open educational resource presents a practical mathematics lesson in which students turn numerical data from Wikipedia into a clear data visualization. Students select a Wikipedia page with a data table but little or no visual representation. They examine the original source, date, units, definitions, and possible data limits. They then organize the data in Microsoft Excel or another spreadsheet, choose an appropriate chart, and explain what the visualization helps readers understand. A complete worked example uses the 2017 population growth rates of South American countries.

The resource package includes an instructor lesson plan, a student project guide, a Wikimedia …

Student Perceptions Of The Learning Environment In A Hospital School Program, Hannah Buck Jan 2026

Student Perceptions Of The Learning Environment In A Hospital School Program, Hannah Buck

Brehm Scholars Research

Most research related to hospital school programs has focused on adult perspectives (e.g., teachers, administrators, parents, and clinical staff) rather than on the perspectives of hospitalized students. This study examined the education-related perspectives of hospitalized K–12 students (N = 10) who had engaged with the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital School Program in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Participants completed one semi-structured interview and two short surveys. Sessions were audio-recorded, transcribed, in vivo coded, and thematically analyzed. Despite the challenges associated with hospitalization, participants generally reported equal or greater enjoyment of in-hospital schooling compared to non-hospital schooling. Survey responses revealed that higher …

Corticotropin-Releasing Factor Neurons In The Bed Nucleus Of The Stria Terminalis Modulate Avoidance Behaviors And Feeding, Juan Manuel Romero, Shae-Marie Stafford-Trujillo, Mitzy Mendoza, Pey-Shyuan Chin, Snigdha Srivastava, Mikhail Kochukov, Qingchun Tong, Benjamin Russell Arenkiel

The Brown Foundation: Institute of Molecular Medicine

Introduction: Animals rely on defensive avoidance of exposed or potentially threatening environments as a fundamental survival strategy, often expressing this behavior as thigmotaxis, or a preference for the periphery of an open space. However, researchers still do not understand how neural circuits coordinate avoidance behavior with competing physiological drives such as feeding. In this study, we investigate how corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF)-expressing neurons in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST) integrate environmental avoidance and feeding behavior.

Methods: We used adult male and female mice and applied fiber photometry to monitor BNST CRF neuronal activity in vivo. We performed both …

Climate Change Impacts On Forest Canopy Temperatures: From Mechanisms To Implications, William Hagan Brown

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Forests are a vital interface between the biosphere and the atmosphere. As global temperatures rise due to increasing anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, it is important to understand the response of forest tree canopy leaf temperature (Tcan). Additionally, understanding variation in Tcan and regulation across species within ecosystems is crucial for understanding how climate change affects plants. Thus, this research aimed to measure Tcan in temperate and tropical forests under contrasting environmental conditions to advance understanding of Tcan. At the Birmingham Institute of Forest Research Free-Air CO2 Enrichment (BIFoR-FACE) site, continuous thermal infrared (TIR) …

Characterisation Of Biodegradable Polymers And Their Degradation In The Environment, Robyn Barrett Jan 2026

Characterisation Of Biodegradable Polymers And Their Degradation In The Environment, Robyn Barrett

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

The escalating accumulation of persistent plastic waste necessitates the transition to sustainable materials, with bio-based and/or biodegradable polymers increasingly adopted for applications, such as forestry tree shelters, where retrieval is costly and impractical. However, the true environmental fate and long-term stability of these complex bio-based and/or biodegradable polymer products remain uncertain. This uncertainty is exacerbated by reliance on conventional degradation assessments that employ indirect metrics (e.g., carbonyl index, CO$_2$ evolution) under ideal laboratory conditions, often failing to predict performance in the heterogeneous and complex natural environment. This research addressed this critical analytical gap by establishing a high-resolution, untargeted chemical framework …

Iron(Ii)/Cobalt(Ii)-Mediated Silicon And Carbon Quantum Dots For Nanozyme Activity And Fluorescence Sensing Of Hydrogen Peroxide And Glucose, Kang Qin

Dissertations and Theses

Silicon quantum dots (SiQDs) and carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have been widely studied as fluorescent nanomaterials for sensing applications. In this thesis, we developed two different nanomaterials, SiQDs and CQDs, and investigated their catalytic activities and applied them for the detection of hydrogen peroxide and glucose. In the first project, Co2+-mediated SiQDs were synthesized through a hydrothermal method. The obtained nanoparticles showed obvious peroxidase-like activity toward the oxidation of tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in the presence of H2O2 under acidic conditions. Moreover, a weak oxidation of TMB was also observed without H2O2, suggesting the existence of oxidase-like activity. To better understand the …

Invasion Dynamics, Environmental Conditions, And Community Impacts Of Yellow Sweetclover (Melilotus Officinalis) Across The Northern Great Plains, Sakshi Saraf

Dissertations and Theses

Understanding how environmental conditions and invasion dynamics shape native plant Communities is critical for conserving and managing the semi-arid grasslands of the Northern Great Plains (NGP). Invasive plant species are increasingly altering ecosystem structure and function across this region, yet knowledge gaps remain regarding the drivers of invasion, their spatiotemporal dynamics, and their associations with native plant communities. This dissertation investigates three questions: (1) what environmental conditions are associated with the distribution and abundance of the invasive legume Melilotus officinalis (yellow sweetclover; MEOF), (2) how does MEOF vary across space and time under climatic conditions, and (3) how are environmental …

Bold legislative action is essential to modernize an outdated regulatory framework that no longer serves the public interest. By reforming the General Mining Law of 1872, the United States can advance towards a more sustainable and equitable future, leveraging its mineral resources to benefit all citizens and support the global transition to renewable energy. The urgency of this moment demands decisive action, as the implications for our environment and society are profound. Although Congress has not yet proven its capabilities in overcoming division and moving past legislative gridlock, it must rise to the occasion.

An Autoethnographic Study Of A Technical Services Librarian’S Teaching Journey During The Tenure Track: “Define Myself For Myself To Both Survive And Thrive”, Junli Diao Jan 2026

An Autoethnographic Study Of A Technical Services Librarian’S Teaching Journey During The Tenure Track: “Define Myself For Myself To Both Survive And Thrive”, Junli Diao

Publications and Research

This autoethnographic study explores the disorienting dilemma that a technical services librarian experienced while alternating between working behind the scenes to fulfill professional responsibilities and teaching in the library to meet organizational expectations as a faculty member. The analysis of personal data accumulated during the tenure track period reveals three themes: teaching as learning to become, teaching as learning to challenge the system, and teaching as learning to research. Reflection focuses on three themes interconnected by the concept and practice of mindful learning. With the acknowledgement of limitations, this autoethnography concludes it was the self-reflective lifelong learning mindset that helped …

Exploring The Role Of Satisfaction With Love, Education, Work, And Leisure In Flourishing During Emerging Adulthood And Early Established Adulthood, Jonathon J. Beckmeyer, Tyler B. Jamison, Cindy L. Hartman

Faculty Publications - Family and Consumer Sciences

Using data from 857 young adults (18 to 35 years-old), we explored how satisfaction with education, work, romantic, and leisure experiences were associated with flourishing. We found associations between satisfaction and flourishing, even when accounting for having completed salient developmental tasks related to education, work, romantic relationships, and leisure. Although we did not find that gender (cisgender women compared to cisgender men) or developmental stage (emerging adult compared to early established adult) moderated associations between developmental domain satisfaction and flourishing, we did find gender and developmental stage differences in education, work, and leisure satisfaction as well as developmental task completion …

Viral Ecology And Taxonomy At Axial Seamount, Madison Bohan Jan 2026

Viral Ecology And Taxonomy At Axial Seamount, Madison Bohan

Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium

Viruses are microscopic infectious agents that can infect all living organisms and are found in every ecosystem on Earth. Despite this abundance, viral communities in deep-sea environments remain understudied. Hydrothermal vent systems are a unique environment of study due to high pressure, extreme temperatures, and lack of sunlight that make environments uninhabitable except for specialized organisms. The goal of this study is to characterize viral families at Axial Seamount and improve our understanding of viral diversity in deep-sea hydrothermal ecosystems. A team of researchers conducted a research cruise along the Pacific Ridge to sample multiple hydrothermal vent systems. Water samples …
