Density Functional Theory Studies Of Fermi Resonance In Small Aryl Azide Vibrational Probes, Gammanage Sathya Madhuwanthi Perera

Theses

Site-specific study of the protein using time-resolved IR spectroscopy with the assistance of vibrational probes (VPs) has been the most promising research discipline. However, azide VPs that are absorbed within the protein transparent window generate a complex absorption profile due to Fermi resonance (FR). In the current study, the azide absorption profiles of three aryl-azide compounds: 4-azidotoluene, 4-azido-N-phenylmaleimide, and 4-azidoacetanilide have been explored with basis set effect, solvent effect, intramolecular effect, and the effect of rotational isomerism. Basis set effect was studied using seven basis sets namely: 6-31G(d,p), 6-31+G(d,p), 6-31++G(d,p), 6-311G(d,p), 6-311+G(d,p), 6-311++G(d,p) and 6-311++G(df,pd) with DFT/B3LYP. An Inquiry Into The Language Development Of Twins: An Autoethnographic Study, Madison Grimm May 2022

An Inquiry Into The Language Development Of Twins: An Autoethnographic Study, Madison Grimm

Undergraduate Honors Theses

According to research, many twins have some form of a language delay. Despite the considerable research on twin language, the cause of these language delays is unknown. Several of the factors that have been proposed include genetics, prematurity, and low birth weight. I am a twin, and through this research, I reflect on my own language development from both memory and the records my family kept. The data from the records indicate that, unlike many other twins, I did not have a language delay. Despite the lack of a language delay, the data indicates the possibility that the environment and …

The Protective Influence Of Mindfulness Facets On The Relationship Between Negative Core Beliefs And Social Media Addiction Among Latinx College Students, Mariany Gainza Perez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Social media use has continued to rise over the last decade. This behavioral addiction shares essential components with substance addictions (e.g., mood modification, withdrawal). Dysfunctional core beliefs have recently been investigated in relation to Internet addiction and problematic Facebook use, but not with social media addiction specifically. Similarly, mindfulness-based interventions have been developed for various types of technology-related behavioral addictions, yet the relationship between dispositional mindfulness and social media addiction remains unexplored. This study investigated the relationships between these constructs among Latinx undergraduates within the context of social cognitive theory. Participants (n=386; 80.3% female) completed an online survey that assessed …

Small Heat Shock Protein 27 And Its Role In Human Disease, Bianka Andrea Holguin May 2022

Small Heat Shock Protein 27 And Its Role In Human Disease, Bianka Andrea Holguin

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Small heat shock protein 27 (Hsp27) is a ubiquitously expressed molecular chaperone with roles in many physiological processes. As an ATP-independent molecular chaperone, Hsp27 protects substrates from irreversible aggregation and holds them in a folding competent state for later recycling into the proteome. Hsp27 proteins form dimers that are assembled into large oligomeric complexes. Phosphorylation of Hsp27 dissembles the oligomers into chaperone active dimers. Several missense mutations of Hsp27 are causative for the neurodegenerative disorders Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease 2F and distal Hereditary Motor Neuropathy IIB. Here I show that the oligomerization and chaperoning ability of Hsp27 are altered by the Hsp27 …

Understanding The Role Of Small Mammals In Arctic Biogeochemical Cycling, Austin Roy May 2022

Understanding The Role Of Small Mammals In Arctic Biogeochemical Cycling, Austin Roy

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Small mammals play an integral role in their ecosystems. This is especially true in northern ecosystems, where small mammals represent both top-down and bottom-up forces and can have strong effects on ecosystem function through affecting biogeochemical cycling. Despite these important effects, the role of small mammals in influencing biogeochemical cycling has been largely underappreciated in the understanding of arctic ecosystems, leading to a call to better understand how small mammal herbivores impact ecosystem processes including carbon cycling. The overarching goal of this dissertation is to assess how biogeochemical cycling is affected by small mammal herbivore presence, behavior, and population dynamics …

Race, Science, And The Language Of Drug Control In The Americas, 1870s - 1920s, Freddy Mauricio Jaimes Jaimes May 2022

Race, Science, And The Language Of Drug Control In The Americas, 1870s - 1920s, Freddy Mauricio Jaimes Jaimes

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation explores the origins of the language of drug addiction and drug control in the American hemisphere during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries by analyzing the intersection between the scientific study of race and eugenics and the cultural and political reaction to the Chinese global diaspora across the Pacific. I argue that Chinese immigrants perfectly embodied European "scientific" ideas of national or racial degeneration in the minds of scientific and medical elites while exemplifying the publicâ??s predominant stereotypes of addiction. Chinese immigrants became the first and perhaps most powerful symbol that intrinsically associated drug consumption with degeneracy. …

Sex determination is a critical element of successful vertebrate development, suggesting that sex chromosome systems might be evolutionarily stable across lineages. For example, mammals and birds have maintained conserved sex chromosome systems over long evolutionary time periods. Other vertebrates, in contrast, have undergone frequent sex chromosome transitions, which is even more amazing considering we still know comparatively little across large swaths of their respective phylogenies. One reptile group in particular, the gecko lizards (infraorder Gekkota), shows an exceptional lability with regard to sex chromosome transitions and may possess the majority of transitions within squamates (lizards and snakes). However, detailed genomic …
