The Mono Basin Project: Remedying Environmental Injustice Through Tribal Beneficial Use Designations, Molly Greene Jan 2026

The Mono Basin Project: Remedying Environmental Injustice Through Tribal Beneficial Use Designations, Molly Greene

UC Law Environmental Journal

Due to a history of violence, dispossession, and racism, Native American tribes in California face structural disadvantages and inequities with respect to water rights. At the same time, tribes lack meaningful legal remedies to gain access to the water resources necessary to maintain their ways of life. One key issue is that California water agencies traditionally did not consider tribal water uses when implementing water quality control laws, leaving such uses unprotected. For years, tribes have urged the State to fill in these gaps in the law by adopting tribal beneficial uses (“TBUs”), which would protect tribal water uses, such …

The Case For A Moratorium On Deep-Sea Mining: The International Seabed Authority, Indigenous Rights, And Marine Ecosystems In The Eastern Pacific, Afrah A. Qoqandi

UC Law Environmental Journal

The rising interest in deep-sea commercial exploitation has sparked a powerful debate over the environmental and social justice implications of mining the ocean’s depths for valuable minerals. Deep-sea mining targets polymetallic nodules found on the seabed, containing metals critical for green technologies like electric vehicles and solar cells. The Clarion-Clipperton Zone (“CCZ”) in the eastern Pacific is estimated to hold more nickel, manganese, and cobalt than all terrestrial resources combined. As one of the last largely untouched ecosystems, deep-sea mining in the CCZ raises significant concerns about the irreversible harm to its biodiversity and the disruption to Indigenous communities reliant …

Investigating The Reliability And Validity Of The Social Connectedness Instrument Among U.S. Adults, Blake A. Fraser

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Growing evidence shows that poor social connectedness is becoming a public health threat, with rising prevalence and connections to poor mental and physical health across the lifespan. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop feasible and effective social connectedness interventions. There is limited evidence for the effectiveness of current interventions, with studies recommending tailoring the intervention to an individual’s specific social connection needs. However, previous measures of social connectedness provide little information about potentially modifiable contributors of poor connection. Thus, the Social Connectedness Instrument (SCI) was developed to fill in this gap by proposing two novel latent constructs of …

Expansion Of Federal Benefits To Non-Native Adopted Children, Anna-Grace Hockensmith Jan 2026

Expansion Of Federal Benefits To Non-Native Adopted Children, Anna-Grace Hockensmith

American Indian Law Journal

There is palpable tension between tribal sovereignty and federal administrative control in the distribution of federal benefits to members of Tribal Nations. This tension is felt by adopted non-Native children who might struggle to receive federal benefits even though the tribe of their adopted parent(s) has accepted them as a member. This Note explores how adoption of a non-Native child by a tribal member intersects with tribal membership and whether that membership should be enough for the child to receive federal benefits.

The Note discusses four main topics, including: (1) tribal membership, adoption, and current federal enrollment criteria; (2) an …

In this licensee holdover for succession rights to a rent-controlled apartment, the landlord sought possession after the tenant-of-record's death, alleging the respondent was a licensee without succession. The landlord served judicial subpoenas on the Administration for Children's Services (ACS) and the Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) for extensive records related to the deceased tenant's foster parenting. The tenant moved to quash the ACS subpoena, arguing it was impermissibly broad, a fishing expedition, and sought confidential information about non-party minors. The court granted the tenant's motion, finding the landlord was not a proper party to seek foster care records …

A263: Exploring Cadd-Based Binding Modes Of Androstenedione And Its Metabolites With Potential In Vivo Targets, Yuhong Ding, Wei Dong

International Journal of Physical Activity and Health

The abuse of androstenedione, an endogenous steroid hormone, among athletes to enhance performance is a significant concern in sports. Current anti-doping detection methods are limited by short detection windows and high false-positive rates, largely due to the transient nature of primary metabolites. To address these challenges, this study employs computer-aided drug design (CADD) to identify stable, long-acting metabolites of androstenedione that can extend the detection window and improve anti-doping efficacy. The integration of CADD with sports physiology principles allows for a more comprehensive understanding of how exercise-induced metabolic fluctuations can influence the detection of these metabolites. Method: Molecular docking simulations …

Progress And Challenges In Profiling Protein-Rna And Protein-Associated Rna-Rna Interactions, Zhuoyi Song, Eric L Van Nostrand

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

RNA binding proteins (RBPs) play essential roles in post-transcriptional gene regulation by interacting with a wide range of RNA targets. In addition to regulating RNA processing via individual RBP-RNA interactions, there is a growing appreciation of the regulatory impact of protein-associated RNA-RNA interactions that include both well-studied examples of small regulatory RNAs (e.g. microRNAs, snRNAs, snoRNAs, piRNAs) guiding ribonucleoprotein complexes to their targets as well as structured RNA elements defining the interaction landscape for an RBP. To elucidate the full scope of RBP-RNA interactions, CLIP ( crosslinking and immunoprecipitation)-based methods have emerged as powerful tools. Even with the wide application …

Design Of Nanomaterial-Based Sensors For Enhanced Halogen Bonding, Ben H. Edelman, Charles W. Sheppard, Lucas A. Chuidian, Arielle Vinnikov, Felix Bevc, Lillian B. Hughes, Carol A. Parish, Michael C. Leopold

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Halogen bonding is a highly directional, noncovalent, intermolecular interaction which has been harnessed for a variety of applications, including sensor design. A halogen bond (XB) is formed between a region of positive electrostatic potential on a halogen atom (X) and electron rich portions of target molecules. The strength of XB interactions relies on shorter XB bond distances and more linear R–X···B bond angles, which facilitate stronger, more negative binding energies. While prior studies have sought to maximize interactions, few have explored or experimentally demonstrated how geometries and bond angles can enhance XB interactions. Herein, fundamental studies are conducted at self-assembled …

Volumetric Wear Analysis Of Polyethylene Orthopedic Liners Using Point Clouds, Gabriel Landi Jan 2026

Volumetric Wear Analysis Of Polyethylene Orthopedic Liners Using Point Clouds, Gabriel Landi

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

In vivo wear of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) orthopedic bearings represents a major problem in shoulder and knee arthroplasty, with significant amounts of devices failing due to the complication itself, and even more due to associated reasons for retrieval, including aseptic loosening. However, quantification of UHMWPE wear has largely been limited to linear and in vitro volumetric analyses, obscuring the understanding of the amount of clinically relevant material loss. This study proposes new methods to measure articular, rim, and backside surfaces of retrieved shoulder and knee UHMWPE liners, centered around the coordinate measuring machine (CMM)-based collection of high density …

Background: HER2-low breast cancer (HER2 immunohistochemical [IHC] score 1+, or IHC 2+ without HER2 gene amplification) is distinct from HER2-positive and HER2-0 breast cancer (IHC 0), with a differing prognosis and specific therapeutic options. The DESTINY-Breast04 trial demonstrated notable efficacy of the HER2 antibody-drug conjugate trastuzumab deruxtecan over standard chemotherapy in patients with metastatic breast cancer (MBC) defined as HER2-low. More recently, the DESTINY-Breast06 trial confirmed this benefit in hormone receptor-positive and HER2-ultralow (less than 1+, but with ≤10% of infiltrating cancer cells showing incomplete and faint/weak membrane staining) cases, prompting re-evaluation of HER2 diagnostic thresholds and treatment strategies.

Dietary components influence microbial composition in the digestive tract. Although often viewed as energy sources, dietary components are likely to shape microbial determinants of intestinal colonization beyond metabolism. Here, we report that a dietary long-chain fatty acid enhances the yeast Candida albicans colonization of the murine gut partly by eliciting modifications to the fungal cell surface. Mice fed an oleic acid-rich diet were readily colonized by C. albicans and exhibited higher fungal load in feces compared with rodents fed an isocaloric control diet. Surprisingly, β-oxidation, a catabolic process to break down fatty acids for energy production, was dispensable for C. …
