The Javan banteng (Bos javanicus) persists on Java mainly in a small number of protected-area strongholds, making robust climatic niche characterization important for conservation planning and for evaluating potential management or restoration targets. Here, we modeled banteng climatic suitability in southwestern Java using a MaxEnt (maxnet) framework calibrated with bioclimatic predictors from CHELSA and benchmark occurrence records from extant populations in Ujung Kulon National Park (UKNP) and Alas Purwo National Park (APNP). To contextualize transferability to non-occupied protected habitat, we also projected suitability to Cagar Alam Pananjung Pangandaran (CAPP) and quantified environmental novelty using the Multivariate Environmental Similarity Surface (MESS). …

Patents In Paradise: The Evolution Of Patent Law In The Cayman Islands, Andrew W. Torrance, Andrew P. Morriss, Lisa C. Friedman

This study examines the Cayman Islands’ unique position in the global intellectual property (IP) landscape, contrasting its success as an exporter of financial and legal services with the inherently domestic nature of patent protection. We hypothesize that due to this limitation, the Cayman Islands functions as a strategic, cost-effective jurisdiction for augmenting patent protection initially obtained elsewhere. Our research provides the first comprehensive analysis of Caymanian patents, and through a quantitative examination of patent family data—including filing trends, economic valuation, geographic distribution, and assignee profiles—we find strong empirical evidence to support this thesis.

Clinical trial data occupy a contested space between private commercial assets and public goods. While the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has historically shielded these data through expansive trade-secret interpretations, the European Union (EU) has adopted a more open disclosure regime. This Article compares the two regimes and traces how the EU’s two-decade journey toward transparency has become a key reference for researchers and advocates of open data-sharing.

Focusing on EU practices—targeted redactions, time-bound access, granular disclosure guidelines—the paper shows that U.S. objections to broader transparency often rest on overstated concerns about competitive harm. A Filspari (sparsentan) case …

Estimates of cardiorespiratory fitness metrics (e.g., maximal oxygen uptake) from wearable electronic devices are often characterized by significant noise and variability. Inconsistencies arise due to algorithmic differences between manufacturers, sensor inaccuracies, and biological variance. The integration of data from multiple disparate sources lacks a standardized method for weighting measurements based on source reliability or handling late-arriving data. While the disclosed method is described in the context of cardiorespiratory fitness metrics such as VO2 max, it is equally applicable to any changing physiological variable derived from noisy or disparate sources, including but not limited to daily or weekly average blood pressure. …

The modern Supreme Court has defined “discriminatory intent” as a strict-liability concept. It does not matter why the government sorts people by a protected characteristic, such as race or sex; it matters only that the government does sort people by such a characteristic. This principle is the key holding of affirmative-action cases, such as Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. President & Fellows of Harvard College. Yet, in the recent case United States v. The molecular pathways linking genetic variants to Parkinson's disease (PD) onset and progression remain incompletely defined; however, risk alleles in multiple genes, including GBA1, strongly implicate lipid metabolism. To systematically identify causal biomarker signatures, we analyzed comprehensive metabolome profiles from blood plasma in 149 PD patients and 150 controls, along with complementary genetic, RNA-sequencing, and metabolic data from other available clinical and pathologic cohorts. Using colocalization and summary-data-based Mendelian randomization, we tested whether expression and metabolic quantitative trait loci mediate the association between implicated genetic variants and PD risk. Natural and working lands are often touted as natural climate solutions due to their ability to take up and store carbon, and land managers are increasingly tasked with considering how management actions impact carbon outcomes alongside other management goals. As a result, there is a need to assess how management actions may drive trade-offs and co-benefits between multiple management goals. However, quantitative analysis of trade-offs is not feasible for many local-scale management projects.
