Acute Schistosomiasis In A Traveler Returning From St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands: A Case Report., John Weis, Mackenzie Caruthers, Megan Buller
Ambulatory and Primary Care Articles
In this case report, we describe a patient who presented to their primary care provider with abdominal pain after returning from travel to the Caribbean island of St. Croix. The patient reported two weeks of epigastric abdominal pain, dyspepsia, nausea, and night sweats. Following an initial evaluation that revealed eosinophilia with unclear etiology, they were referred to an infectious disease clinic. Through a targeted infectious evaluation and workup, the patient was diagnosed with acute schistosomiasis syndrome and was treated with praziquantel. Treatment resulted in the complete resolution of her symptoms, and follow-up laboratory evaluation showed complete resolution of her eosinophilia. …

Improvements In The Thermal Stability And Mechanical Robustness Of Holograms Recorded In Acrylamide/Polyvinyl Alcohol-Based Photopolymers Through The Use Of D-Sorbitol As A Plasticizer, Michael Murray, Aaron Byrne, Izabela Naydenova, Suzanne Martin
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
In this work, a photopolymer formulation is presented that demonstrates significant improvements in layer hardness and temperature stability, while retaining the excellent holographic recording characteristics and ease of preparation associated with acrylamide (AA)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based photopolymers. This is achieved through the use of N-phenyl glycine as an electron donor and, for the first time, D-Sorbitol, a naturally occurring sugar-alcohol, as a plasticizer. The plasticizing effect of D-Sorbitol is demonstrated through the minimal loss of diffraction efficiency (η) observed upon UV bleaching (fixing) of 500 lines/mm gratings, which is evidence for effective mass transport during holographic recording. This solves a key …

Background: Bronchiolitis exposes infants to both acute burdens (e.g., hospitalization in cases of severe bronchiolitis) and increased risks for chronic respiratory sequelae (e.g., asthma). In severe bronchiolitis, recent evidence suggests distinct pathobiological roles of microbiota (e.g., viruses, bacteria) and host responses influenced by genetic and epigenetic factors. However, the relationship of airway microbiota with host DNA methylation (DNAm) in infants with severe bronchiolitis remains unknown.
Methods: In a multi-center prospective cohort of 504 multi-ethnic infants with severe bronchiolitis (age < 1 year), using nasopharyngeal microbiome (exposure) and blood DNAm (outcome, Infinium MethylationEPIC BeadChip, Illumina) data within 24 h of the hospitalization, we conducted microbiome-epigenome-wide association studies (mbEWAS). We examined microbiota-associated differentially methylated CpGs (mbDMCs, false discovery rate [FDR] < 0.05), regions (mbDMRs, FDR < 0.05), and DNAm age acceleration. We also determined the associations of DNAm age acceleration with asthma development by age 6 years. Furthermore, we focused on asthma-related pathogenic bacteria-Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, and Streptococcus pneumoniae-for functional analyses by examining serum mbDMR-related proteins (Proseek Multiplex, Olink) and their enriched pathways (FDR < 0.10).
Results: Across 23 common taxa-observed at least in 25% of the infants, we identified 1 mbDMC (S. pneumoniae, cg16594639, chr20: 39528675) …

Positive Youth Development And Connection With Nature Through Urban Agriculture, Casey Ortbahn, Marijke Hecht, Kristi Lekies
Journal of Youth Development
Youth urban agriculture programs connect youth with nature and support positive youth development. In this qualitative study, we use photovoice to amplify youth voices and explore 16 high school youths’ perceptions of how participation in a youth gardening program supported their confidence, connection, and sense of belonging. Using qualitative thematic analysis of photos, posters, and interviews, we identify several program processes that supported confidence and belonging, including meaningful relationships with peers and adults, connections with nature, and relationships with more-than-human beings. Our analysis reveals that nature is an important context for youth development and that nature is also more than …

Advanced-stage lung squamous-cell carcinoma (LUSC) remains a therapeutic challenge. Although immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have revolutionized LUSC treatment, only a small subset of LUSC patients can achieve durable clinical benefits, underscoring the need for novel strategies. Emerging immunotherapy strategies have demonstrated early evidence of promise for LUSC patients, particularly multi-specific antibodies and fusion proteins, antibody-drug conjugates, adoptive cell therapies, and cancer vaccines. Additionally, advances in multi-omics and artificial intelligence offer potential for precise immunotherapy by deciphering the complex tumor-immune microenvironment and predicting therapeutic responses. The future of LUSC treatment lies in rational multi-target and biological therapies to boost immune cytotoxicity, …

From Damage Signals To Immune Modulators: Oxidized Lipids In Immunometabolic Inflammation, Neetu Srivastava, Xiaoxiao Wan
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Oxidized lipids, once viewed as byproducts of oxidative stress, are now recognized as critical mediators linking metabolism, redox imbalance, and immunity. Generated through enzymatic and nonenzymatic oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids, oxidized phospholipids, lipid aldehydes, and oxidized lipoproteins act as context-dependent signals regulating immune activation, resolution, and metabolic adaptation. In metabolic inflammation, these lipids engage scavenger and Toll-like receptors to influence macrophage polarization, dendritic-cell function, and T-cell differentiation. Their context and concentration determine whether oxidized lipids amplify inflammation or promote immune tolerance. Accumulation of these species connects oxidative stress to immune dysfunction, contributing to diseases, such as atherosclerosis, obesity, diabetes, …

Evolutionary Conservation Of Midline Axon Guidance Activity Between Drosophila And Tribolium Frazzled, Piyasi Ghosh, Benjamin C. Wadsworth, Logan Terry, Timothy A. Evans
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
The regulation of midline crossing of axons is of fundamental importance for the proper development of nervous system connectivity in bilaterian animals. A number of conserved axon guidance signaling pathways coordinate to attract or repel axons at the nervous system midline to ensure the proper regulation of midline crossing. The attractive Netrin-Frazzled/DCC (Net-Fra) signaling pathway is widely conserved among bilaterians, but it is not clear whether the mechanisms by which Net and Fra promote midline crossing are also conserved. In Drosophila, Fra can promote midline crossing via Netrin-dependent and Netrin-independent mechanisms, by acting as a canonical midline attractive receptor and …

Shaping The Future Of Vertical Bone Augmentation: A Detailed Review Of Additive Manufacturing And 3d Biodegradable Scaffolds, Sleem Abdelstar Farag, Refaie Ahmed Omar, Salah A. Salman, Ahmed Barhoum, Gomaa A. Abdalla, Abdalla Abdal Hay Ali
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Achieving effective alveolar bone augmentation in the vertical dimension presents a significant challenge in periodontal tissue regeneration, particularly for optimizing dental implant procedures. Sufficient alveolar bone height is crucial for successful implant placement. To achieve this, several surgical approaches—such as autologous bone block grafting, distraction osteogenesis, and guided bone regeneration (GBR)—are commonly used, often in combination with natural or synthetic grafting materials. However, these conventional methods face limitations, including morbidity, dimensional instability, structural weaknesses, handling difficulties, and high failure rates. Recent advancements in additive manufacturing, present innovative solutions by enabling the creation of 3D porous scaffolds with essential properties for …
The Application, Construction, And Validation Of Hidden Markov Model Profiles For Carbonic Anhydrase Enzymes, Samuel F. Kaplan
The Application, Construction, And Validation Of Hidden Markov Model Profiles For Carbonic Anhydrase Enzymes, Samuel F. Kaplan
Master's Theses
Carbonic anhydrases (CAs) catalyze the reversible hydration of CO2 and have evolved independently at least eight times, resulting in structurally distinct enzyme families (α, β, γ, δ, ζ, η, θ, ι). Traditional sequence alignment methods struggle to classify these convergently evolved proteins because their sequential similarity does not reliably indicate functional or evolutionary relationships. Many CA sequences in public databases are annotated generically without family assignments, and prior computational approaches have focused predominantly on the three well characterized families (α, β, γ), leaving the five recently discovered classes without robust classification tools. Family level assignment is often a prerequisite for …

A 2 × 2 full factorial design was used to compare four treatments: black tea + water (BW), black tea + whey (BH), hibiscus + water (HW), and hibiscus + whey (HH). The fermentation solvents (water or whey) were heated to 88 °C, infused with 0.6% (w/v) black tea or hibiscus for 10 minutes, sweetened with 10% (w/v) sucrose, cooled to 22 °C, and inoculated with 20% (v/v) kombucha starter culture. Fermentations were carried out at 22 °C …
Measurement And Control Of The Oxidation-Reduction Potential And Its Chemical And Sensory Consequences In Wines, William Jordan Wright
Measurement And Control Of The Oxidation-Reduction Potential And Its Chemical And Sensory Consequences In Wines, William Jordan Wright
Master's Theses
The oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) is a measurement thought to reflect the overall ability of a solution to oxidize or reduce substances within that solution. In wine, there is no absolute agreement as to which substances control or dominate the ORP; however, oxygen, ethanol, iron-tartrate and copper-tartrate complexes, and glutathione are suspected to play key roles, while sulfur dioxide and phenolics may act as buffers. Anecdotally, some varieties of Vitis vinifera are prone to oxidation while others are prone to reduction, though the chemical basis of this remains unclear. The following works aim to further elucidate the influence of specific chemical …

Associations Between Nutrition-Related Chronic Disease And Food Insecurity: Data From The California State University, Elizabeth Ochoa
Master's Theses
Food insecurity is a growing public health concern consistently associated with elevated rates of nutrition-related chronic disease (NRCD) across the general population. Despite young adulthood being a critical window for dietary pattern formation, this relationship remains minimally explored among college students. This thesis examined associations between food insecurity and NRCD diagnosis, including hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and cardiovascular disease, among undergraduate students across the California State University (CSU) system. Cross-sectional data were drawn from the Spring 2021 CSU National College Health Assessment, administered across all 23 campuses. After exclusions, the analytical sample comprised 13,762 students. Bivariate analyses assessed relationships between key …
Environmental Impact Of Preventative Fire-Retardant Applications On Soil Water Chemistry, Patrick C. Michelsen
Environmental Impact Of Preventative Fire-Retardant Applications On Soil Water Chemistry, Patrick C. Michelsen
Master's Theses
Between 1992 and 2012, 84% of all documented wildfires were started by humans. These fires often start around high-risk locations such as power lines and roadsides where fuel loads are near these potential human-caused ignition sources. Point source ignition sites that are surrounded by shrubs or grasslands are especially important because fires that occur within these biomes are responsible for far more destruction of property than forest fires. One strategy that is effective at mitigating the spread of fires from ignition sites that are within grassland or shrub biomes are preventative fire-retardant products (PFRPs). These PFRPs differ from traditional fire-retardant …

Background. Childhood maltreatment (CM), encompassing abuse and neglect, is highly prevalent and associated with elevated risk for major depressive disorder (MDD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and other related conditions. However, the extent to which neuroanatomical alterations in MDD and PTSD are attributable to CM is uncertain.
Methods. Here, we analyzed CM and whole-brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data from 3711 participants in the ENIGMA (Enhancing Neuro Imaging Genetics through Meta Analysis) MDD and PTSD Working Groups (25 sites; mean age = 33.3 ± 13.0 years; 59.9% female). Normative modeling estimated deviation z scores for 14 subcortical volume, 68 cortical thickness …

Law And The Self-Coordinating Market Idea, Sanjukta Paul

Much of the focus of the live Symposium was on comparing existing scholarship associated with two intellectual communities. I have no objection to that enterprise in the abstract, though I think it is a bit premature where law and political economy (LPE) is concerned and sets up an apples-to-oranges comparison to the decades-old streams of work and thinking in law and economics (L&E). But I would rather use the privilege of the space in this written Symposium to sketch what I believe is the ultimate substantive nub of contestation in this conversation about the core subject matter of “the economy” …

Development Of A Framework For Identifying Asphalt Pavement Cracking Distresses Using Machine Learning, Dingxin Cheng
Mineta Transportation Institute
Asphalt pavement cracking is one of the most critical distresses affecting pavement performance and service life. When pavement deteriorates, it can lead to safety hazards, higher vehicle maintenance costs, and expensive repairs for cities and states—making early detection essential for everyone who relies on the roadway system. To address this challenge, the research team developed a prototype cracking identification system that integrates a customized machine learning model with computer vision algorithms. High-resolution images collected from drones or ground-based cameras are processed within the system to automatically detect and classify major cracking types. The core of the framework utilizes the You …
Can Legal Knowledge Save Lives? A Randomized Experiment In Preventive Health Screenings, Christopher Robertson, Wendy Netter Epstein
Can Legal Knowledge Save Lives? A Randomized Experiment In Preventive Health Screenings, Christopher Robertson, Wendy Netter Epstein
Faculty Scholarship
While the U.S. healthcare system typically imposes significant out-of-pocket costs, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires full insurance coverage for certain preventive health services (PHS), including cancer screenings, without cost-sharing. Despite this policy, one in four eligible Americans remains unscreened for breast, colorectal, and cervical cancer, which increases their risk of premature death. We hypothesize that a lack of awareness about the ACA’s free care requirement contributes to this gap and that explicitly informing patients could increase screening uptake. Additionally, we investigate whether prior experiences with medical debt deter individuals from seeking even cost-free care, reflecting a spillover effect of …

Single Zonular Fiber Extraction And Characterization: A Platform For Biomechanical, Biochemical And Structural Analyses, Riley Forinash, Sean Staggs, Steven Bassnett, Juan Rodriguez
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Zonular fibers are essential for suspending the lens within the eye and, in primates, for transmitting forces generated by the ciliary body to drive ocular accommodation. Despite their biomechanical importance, the response of these fibers to sudden strains, and the molecular basis of their exceptional durability remain poorly understood. This is due, in part, to the absence of tools for studying them in isolation. Here, we present a custom-built, cost-effective apparatus designed to isolate, manipulate, and characterize individual zonular fibers under controlled physical and chemical conditions. The apparatus enables quantification of elastic moduli, stress-relaxation behavior, Poisson's ratio, and response to …

Vestibular schwannomas (VS) are tumors arising from Schwann cells of the vestibulocochlear nerve, often leading to hearing loss, gait imbalance, and other neurological complications. Recently, molecular profiling of VS using bulk and single-cell transcriptional and epigenetic approaches has reshaped our understanding of VS pathogenesis and challenged the long-standing view of VS being molecularly homogeneous. These integrative, multi-omic approaches reveal significant differences within VS and highlight diverse Schwann cell subpopulations and their interactions with the tumor microenvironment. Interestingly, these analyses also uncover 2 molecularly distinct groups of VS, one containing Schwann cells with an "Injury-like" phenotype that drives VS progression through …

Finding Significant Hits in Networks (FISHNET) uses prior biological knowledge, represented as gene interaction networks and gene function annotations, to identify genes that do not meet the genome-wide significance threshold but replicate, nonetheless. Its input is gene-level P-values from any source, including omicsWAS, aggregation of genome-wide association studies P-values, CRISPR screens, or differential expression analysis. It is based on the idea that genes whose P-values are low purely by chance are distributed randomly across networks and functions, so genes with suggestive P-values that cluster in densely connected subnetworks and share common functions are less likely to reflect chance and more …

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have investigated the dose-response relationship between external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) and leukemia by reconstructing the mean active bone marrow (ABM) dose as part of the exposure assessment. However, no prior study has leveraged electronic medical records (EMR) to reconstruct ABM dose and dose-volume in an EBRT patient population.
PURPOSE: To support future studies on the relationship between radiation exposure and adverse health effects among EBRT patients, we demonstrate methods to retrospectively calculate ABM dose and dose-volume metrics in a large patient cohort using EMR.

Intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) are often rich in charged residues, and electrostatic interactions have a pronounced effect on their conformational distributions, interactions and functions. However, attaining quantitative understanding of electrostatics is challenging because of the sequence-specific arrangement of charges in the chain, the long-range nature of electrostatic interactions, charge screening, and the condensation of counterions-effects that all need to be taken into account self-consistently. Here, analytically tractable quantitative models are developed to predict ensemble average distances between any pair of residues in IDPs as a function of sequence and salt concentration, explicitly considering charge patterning. These models are tested systematically …

N-Dqn: Neutrosophic Deep Q-Network For Uncertainty-Aware Forecasting And Decision Optimization, Rania Lutfi
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
Uncertainty remains a critical challenge in dynamic spatiotemporal forecasting. This study proposes the Neutrosophic Deep Q-Network (N-DQN), a framework that integrates neutrosophic logic with deep reinforcement learning to enhance decision optimization under uncertainty. Features are modeled through truth, indeterminacy, and falsity membership functions, enabling robust handling of ambiguous data. The framework incorporates attention-guided preprocessing and horizon-aware optimization to adapt predictions across short- and long-term intervals. Experiments on benchmark traffic datasets (METR-LA and PEMS-BAY) demonstrate improved forecasting accuracy and reduced error rates compared with established baselines. The results highlight the scalability and resilience of N-DQN, positioning it as a promising approach …

The automatic diagnosis of lung cancer using chest X-ray (CXR) images has significantly advanced with progress in computing, machine learning, and deep learning. However, detecting lesions and nodules remains challenging due to CXR limitations. Early lung cancer detection is critical for successful treatment, but current AI algorithms often rely on large annotated datasets, which are not always available. To address this, a novel multi-classification deep learning framework is proposed that combines CXR and CT images. This approach leverages the detailed feature detection capabilities of CT scans alongside the complementary views from CXRs, improving early-stage lung cancer detection and classification precision. …

Motivation: Methods for sharing gene regulatory information and knowledge on FAIR principles, particularly in the context of tissue-specific gene regulation, remain poorly defined and implemented, hampering discovery and clinical genetic diagnosis.
Results: We specified FAIR principles for tissue-specific gene regulatory information and knowledge; implemented them by developing a registry of regulatory elements and aggregating FAIR gene regulatory information from several major sources; developed computational tools that utilize these FAIR resources; and demonstrated their utility by associating gene regulatory variants with major subtypes of congenital heart disease.

Radiopharmaceutical therapy (RPT) has emerged as a transformative modality in oncology, particularly for patients with metastatic or inoperable tumors. By leveraging molecularly targeted carriers conjugated to cytotoxic radionuclides, RPT enables precise delivery of ionizing radiation to tumor sites while minimizing off-target effects. Central to this approach are alpha (α) and beta (β) particle-emitting radionuclides. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of all clinically relevant alpha and beta emitters and incorporates the most recent advances from 2017-2025, offering a comprehensive and up-to-date perspective. Alpha and beta emitters hold significant promises for the future, especially in nuclear medicine, energy, and …

Background
Despite evidence for a genetic component, few genetic associations with lung function decline have been identified. We aimed to evaluate genome-wide associations and putative downstream functionality of genetic variants for lung function decline.
Methods
We conducted genome-wide association study (GWAS) analyses of decline in FEV1, FVC, and FEV1/FVC in 52,056 White (N = 44,988), Black (N = 5,788), Hispanic (N = 550), and Chinese American (N = 730) participants across seven general population cohorts. GWAS analyses were stratified by cohort, ancestry, and sex. Results were combined in cross-ancestry and ancestry-specific meta-analyses. Significant variants available in …
