Additive Manufacturing For Medical Education, Michael Noon
Additive Manufacturing For Medical Education, Michael Noon
College of Engineering Summer Undergraduate Research Program
A growing body of evidence is suggesting that anatomical knowledge, the keystone of many medical specialties, is suffering among new graduates. While a host of reasons are provided, one common thread that many point to is the decline of cadaver dissections in the classroom. Many virtual audio-visual tools are used to address this gap, yet evidence has shown their ineffectiveness. Given this gap, the high degree of flexibility found in additive manufacturing (AM), and the many uses AM has already found in the medical field, we propose its use to fill this gap, allowing for students to learn with touch …

Influence Of Metal-Coordinating Comonomers On The Coordination Structure And Binding In Magnetic Poly(Ionic Liquid)S, Kayla Foley, Lucas Condes, Keisha B. Walters
Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
A poly(ionic liquid) (PIL), poly(acrylamide-co-diallyl dimethylammonium chloride), was systematically complexed with Co2+, Fe3+, and Co2+/Fe3+ (mixed) at different molar equivalencies to form a series of magnetic PILs (MPILs). These novel MPILs were utilized to examine molecular structure and binding between the polymer and metal species using comprehensive spectroscopic studies in both dry and liquid states. FTIR, X-ray photoelectron, UV-vis, and Raman spectroscopies showed evidence of metal coordination of both the iron and cobalt chloride species with the acrylamide comonomer. Using AC susceptibility measurements, the MPILs were found to have magnetic properties …

Regulatory T (Treg) cells are inevitable to prevent deleterious immune responses to self and commensal microorganisms. Treg function requires continuous expression of the transcription factor (TF) FOXP3 and is divided into two major subsets: resting (rTregs) and activated (aTregs). Continuous T cell receptor (TCR) signaling plays a vital role in the differentiation of aTregs from their resting state, and in their immune homeostasis. The process by which Tregs differentiate, adapt tissue specificity, and maintain stable phenotypic expression at the transcriptional level is still inconclusivei. In this work, the role of BATF is investigated, which is induced in response to TCR …

Problems In Microservice Development: Supporting Visualisation, Oscar Manglaras, Alex Farkas, Peter Fule, Christoph Treude, Markus Wagner
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In microservice architectures, developers can face significant problems understanding the structure of the system and how the different microservices interact. This difficulty results from the distributed nature of the system, and the abundance of inter-service communication within the architecture. We want to determine if network visualisations can address these problems given their ability to convey complex topologies. However, to identify what architectural characteristics should be visualised, and how this should be done, we must first determine the needs of microservice developers. This paper identifies and presents the impact and frequency of problems faced by a cohort of microservice developers using …

Neural Modulation Enhancement Using Connectivity-Based Eeg Neurofeedback With Simultaneous Fmri For Emotion Regulation, Amin Dehghani, Hamid Soltanian-Zadeh, Gholam-Ali Hossein-Zadeh
Research Administration Articles
Emotion regulation plays a key role in human behavior and overall well-being. Neurofeedback is a non-invasive self-brain training technique used for emotion regulation to enhance brain function and treatment of mental disorders through behavioral changes. Previous neurofeedback research often focused on using activity from a single brain region as measured by fMRI or power from one or two EEG electrodes. In a new study, we employed connectivity-based EEG neurofeedback through recalling positive autobiographical memories and simultaneous fMRI to upregulate positive emotion. In our novel approach, the feedback was determined by the coherence of EEG electrodes rather than the power of …

Constitutional Resilience, Shannon M. Roesler
Constitutional Resilience, Shannon M. Roesler
Washington and Lee Law Review
Since the New Deal era, our system of constitutional governance has relied on expansive federal authority to regulate economic and social problems of national scale. Throughout the twentieth century, Congress passed ambitious federal statutes designed to address these problems. In doing so, it often enlisted states as regulatory partners—creating a system of shared governance that underpins major environmental statutes, such as the Clean Water Act and the Clean Air Act. These governance structures remain important today as we seek to adapt our laws and institutions to the serious disruptions of climate change. But recent Supreme Court decisions challenge this long-established …

Suffering In Search Of A Methodological Frame: Interdisciplinarity In The Context Of The Gendered Impact Of Climate Migration, Becky Jacobs
William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review
In this essay, the author places the gendered impact of climate migration within the methodological frame of scholars such as geographers Sylvia Winters and Doreen Massey, historian Achille Mbembe, philosopher Gilles Deleuze, philosopher and psychoanalyst Félix Guattari, and anthropologist Tim Ingold. The author discusses the importance of interdisciplinarity and describes the gender-specific risks related to climate displacement before delving into theory.
Need-Oriented Evangelism: Encountering, Embracing, And Experiencing God, Petr Činčala, Allison Sauceda
Need-Oriented Evangelism: Encountering, Embracing, And Experiencing God, Petr Činčala, Allison Sauceda
Great Commission Research Journal
This article provides a fresh perspective on evangelism by reflecting a belief in the Triune God--the source of saving truth and loving community. Mission is part of God’s nature; he is the ultimate Missionary. Mission happens naturally whenever children of God intentionally invite and facilitate God’s presence. Over time, the word “evangelism" has become contaminated by myths, a false understanding of God, and unpleasant religious experiences and practices. Genuine evangelism addresses the most burning issues of people’s lives and should be treated as such. True evangelism involves caring about, praying for, and sharing with people. The practical part of this …
Analyzing African American College Student Willingness To Participate In Clinical Trials, Caitlin B. Ulmer
Analyzing African American College Student Willingness To Participate In Clinical Trials, Caitlin B. Ulmer
Senior Theses
Previous studies regarding African American participation in clinical trials have found that African Americans participate at a significantly lower rate than other ethnic/racial groups. Scholars argue that this lack of participation in clinical trials is a direct result of historical trauma linked to unethical experiments and African American distrust in the healthcare system. However, there is a gap in the literature because these studies focus on African American individuals above the age of 30. This study aimed to fill the gap by examining clinical trial participation among African American college students within the ages 18 to 23. This study also …
Avian Scavenging In The Forensic Context, Austin Millwood
Avian Scavenging In The Forensic Context, Austin Millwood
Senior Theses
Many cultures have recognized the importance of birds in scavenging. However, within forensic literature and research, avian scavenging is an understudied phenomenon. Despite this, researchers have shown that scavenging by birds is unique from other types of scavenging in that birds can rapidly cause complete skeletonization, leave relatively little bone damage, and can spread remains and artifacts over a large area. Here birds known to scavenge are explained in a biological context and then their effects on remains are analyzed. Birds are capable of completely scavenging human remains in as little as 5 hours, depending on many understudied factors. Avian …

The Effectiveness Of Behavior Management Systems In Grade 5 Classrooms, Mihaela Colteanu
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
This action research project, conducted over a 6-week period, aimed to enhance classroom management techniques in response to evolving educational trends which emphasize students' self-regulation and intrinsic motivation. The study focused on a control and experimental group of grade 5 students, implementing two distinct behavior management systems: one grounded in a behavioral approach utilizing rewards and sanctions, and the other based on positive strategies. The researcher, a secondary school English teacher with 8 years international teaching experience, collected data through observations and interviews with former teachers. Even though the initial hypothesis proposed the superiority of a balanced system encompassing both …

Significance statement:
The paper presents major new insights into the multidisciplinary controls of nitrogen export (a widespread environmental concern) from residential landscapes. We conducted biogeochemical and social survey studies to identify locations (hotspots) or times (hot moments) with a disproportionate influence on this export. Results showed high variation in the vulnerability/sensitivity of individual parcels to cause environmental damage and in the knowledge and practices of individual managers. To the extent that hotspots are the result of management choices by homeowners, there are straightforward approaches to improve outcomes, e.g. fertilizer restrictions. If, however, hotspots arise from the configuration and inherent characteristics …

Indicium Ex Machina: Unstructured Sentencing And Disparate Outcomes In Canada, Damilola Awotula
LLM Theses
Recent advancements in artificial intelligence have caused a wave of technological normality. As expected, the criminal justice system, and more increasingly, criminal sentencing is seeing a trend of “technosolutionism” due to real concerns about unjustified disparity. Truly, artificial intelligence has the prospect of making the sentencing process more effective, value-driven, consistent, and predictable. However, relying on the assumption that using such a system may require being confined to the normative sentencing traditions of each country, this thesis argues that there are crucial questions to be addressed about how this technological normality fits within the normative pillars of extant legal principles, …
Towards Effective Governance Of Marine Geoengineering In West Africa: Aligning With Global And Regional Best Practices, Abdul Hafez Mahamah
Towards Effective Governance Of Marine Geoengineering In West Africa: Aligning With Global And Regional Best Practices, Abdul Hafez Mahamah
LLM Theses
The impacts of climate change have compelled humanity to produce innovative ways of counteracting this phenomenon. Marine geoengineering technologies are regarded as an avenue to forestall climate change. However, these technologies pose a danger to the environment and threaten the survival of living organisms and humanity. The deployment of these technologies could exacerbate the adverse impacts that climate change has on the environment. Using doctrinal, legal history, and comparative legal analysis, this thesis studies how West Africa can ensure the effective governance of marine geoengineering activities in the subregion. The study examines the global and selected regional governance regimes and …

Novel Strategies In Antithrombotic Therapy: Targeting Thrombosis While Preserving Hemostasis, Martha M. S. Sim, Semekidus Shiferawe, Jeremy P. Wood
Saha Cardiovascular Research Center Faculty Publications
Antithrombotic therapy is a delicate balance between the benefits of preventing a thrombotic event and the risks of inducing a major bleed. Traditional approaches have included antiplatelet and anticoagulant medications, require careful dosing and monitoring, and all carry some risk of bleeding. In recent years, several new targets have been identified, both in the platelet and coagulation systems, which may mitigate this bleeding risk. In this review, we briefly describe the current state of antithrombotic therapy, and then present a detailed discussion of the new generation of drugs that are being developed to target more safely existing or newly identified …
Compensating For Effects Of Autotomy On Locomotion In Stink Bugs (Halyomorpha Halys), Lilian C. Jubb
Compensating For Effects Of Autotomy On Locomotion In Stink Bugs (Halyomorpha Halys), Lilian C. Jubb
Longwood Senior Thesis Proposal
Autotomy is the voluntary release of an appendage, typically to avoid predation or entrapment. Autonomy of a single leg can have minimal effects on locomotion in arthropods with more than six legs. Hexapods, however, use a double-tripod gait which is completely disrupted with the loss of a single leg, thus locomotor performance should be greatly reduced leading to lower survival. Autotomy is so costly to locomotion that some insects regenerate a lost limb in a subsequent molt leading to reduced investment in other important functions (e.g. reproduction). Autotomy persists in adult hexapods with no opportunity for regeneration, which suggests some …
