Health Justice: The Entanglement Of Quality Of Life And Neoliberalism, Rana Rana Hammam, Salma Anwar, Mennatullah Hendawy
Journal of Engineering Research
Covid 19 pandemic sheds light on the entanglement of urban planning and public health in neoliberal urban contexts with special attention to justice. “Good health and wellbeing” is one of the sustainable development goals. This article argues that neoliberal urban practices result in a good Quality of Life for privileged populations, but negatively affect the vulnerable and lead to health injustice from the perspective of urban planning. Hence, Quality of Life is negatively affected since health is a crucial aspect within the discipline of Quality of Life. The spatial determinants of health-related Quality of Life are essential to be considered …

There are plenty of previous studies that investigated the different health characteristics of blue and green spaces. However, there is still a need for more interdisciplinary studies to measure the long-term effect of blue and green landscapes together on the health of their users. Therefore, the presented study aims to investigate and …
Sustainable Urban Design Of Urban Spaces In Residential Areas And Their Impact On Human Behavior, Amira Gaber
Sustainable Urban Design Of Urban Spaces In Residential Areas And Their Impact On Human Behavior, Amira Gaber
Journal of Engineering Research
Public spaces in residential areas can be considered as a key controller of people's behavior. As these spaces motivate people to socially interact this by the way tailor their personality and mental processes. Besides, this interaction affects the quality of life of individuals and the way they interact with the environment. Accordingly, it is essential for architects to pay more concern to the design of open areas with more consideration to human aspects rather than just physical aspects only. Moreover, the goals and principles of sustainability, especially social sustainability has to be considered. This attributed to the strong relationship and …

Understanding the effects of stress on behavior and cognition is important due to its impact on mental health and wellbeing (Schneiderman et al. 2005). Translational animal research can contribute to the development of new treatments that can improve therapeutic outcomes and our understanding of the neurobiology of stress. In the present study, we complement behavioral stress reactivity with immunohistochemical localization of oxytocin in the hypothalamus, a neuropeptide that regulates stress (Neumann & Slattery, 2016). Oxytocin has potential therapeutic use for mental health disorders (Neumann & Slattery, 2016), and the effects of oxytocin seem to be sexually dimorphic (Love, 2018). Using …

Background: Despite significant advances in cancer therapeutics, it remains one of the leading causes of deaths due to poor response to available treatment modalities and drug resistance. Combination therapy has shown the potential to provide a synergistic therapeutic effect and to overcome drug resistance. However, smart delivery systems that can improve the bioavailability and the delivery of multiple hydrophobic anti-cancer drugs simultaneously at the tumor site without normal organ toxicity could be an effective strategy for cancer treatment.
Methods: Here, a PEGylated drug-drug conjugate (CUR-PEG-S-S-CPT) have been successfully synthesized by conjugating two hydrophobic anti-cancer molecules, curcumin and camptothecin through …

Developing A Chlorophyll-Based Near-Infrared Fluorescent Probe For Cancer Cell Imaging, Benilde E. Adriano, Nycol M. Cotto, Neeraj Chauhan, Meena Jaggi, Subhash C. Chauhan, Murali M. Yallapu
Research Colloquium
Introduction: Near-Infrared (NIR) fluorescence-based imaging is a noteworthy and safer strategy for cancer cells/tissues imaging compared to radiological imaging. NIR fluorescence offers deep tissue penetration and have minimal obstruction by autofluorescence and photon scattering [1]. There are several NIR dyes including indocyanine green (ICG) [2] and IR-1061 [3] that allow high-resolution tissue imaging. However, these dyes possess some low-quality characteristics which limit their use, namely photo instability, toxicity, poor water solubility, and short half-lives [4]. Therefore, more efficient and effective alternatives are urgently required to provide the desired clinical outcomes. Chlorophyll (Chl) is a natural dietary NIR fluorescence emitting …

Journal of Engineering Research
CoFe2O4 nanoparticles were prepared using the auto combustion citrate precursor method. The sample has been investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) to investigate structural properties such as lattice constant and crystallite size. Particle size analyzer (PSA) and “transmission electron microscopy (TEM)” confirm that it has a nanostructure of the sample and a wide distribution in the nanoscale in which the values of their D(311) are included in this range. From the FTIR results, the sample exhibits the two distinct absorption bands known as v1 and v2, often attributed to the spinel lattice's tetrahedral (A-site) and octahedral (B-site), respectively. The magnetic behavior …

Seed Coatings Containing Capsaicin Reduce Seed Removal In Temperate Woody Species, Brian M. Connolly, Francesca Lanni, John L. Orrock, Peter W. Guiden
Biology Faculty Scholarship
Coating seeds in taste-averting chemical defenses (e.g., capsaicin from Capsicum spp.) can reduce rodent seed predation, and thus might promote plant establishment and forest regeneration. However, the efficacy of such seed coatings remains unknown for many woody plant species, and seed coatings have not been evaluated across different habitats where forest managers might seek to promote forest regeneration. We used two complementary seed-removal experiments in closed-canopy forests (Michigan) and an old field undergoing reforestation (New York) to examine whether coating seeds of four native tree species (Acer rubrum, Fagus grandifolia, Pinus banksiana, and Pinus resinosa) with chili …

Lower-cost air pollution sensors can fill critical air quality data gaps in India, which experiences very high fine particulate matter (PM2.5) air pollution but has sparse regulatory air monitoring. Challenges for low-cost PM2.5 sensors in India include high-aerosol mass concentrations and pronounced regional and seasonal gradients in aerosol composition. Here, we report on a detailed long-time performance evaluation of a popular sensor, the Purple Air PA-II, at multiple sites in India. We established three distinct sites in India across land use categories and population density extremes (in urban Delhi and rural Hamirpur in north India and urban Bengaluru in south …

Circadian gene transcription is fundamental to metabolic physiology. Here we report that the nuclear receptor REV-ERBα, a repressive component of the molecular clock, forms circadian condensates in the nuclei of mouse liver. These condensates are dictated by an intrinsically disordered region (IDR) located in the protein's hinge region which specifically concentrates nuclear receptor corepressor 1 (NCOR1) at the genome. IDR deletion diminishes the recruitment of NCOR1 and disrupts rhythmic gene transcription in vivo. REV-ERBα condensates are located at high-order transcriptional repressive hubs in the liver genome that are highly correlated with circadian gene repression. Deletion of the IDR disrupts transcriptional …
