However, research has shown that the lack of social cues in videoconferencing negatively impacts human social connectedness and hinders the production of creative ideas. Therefore, E-Motioning has been proposed as a system that generates geometrical-based visuals according to users’ real-time emotions, and these visuals are used, as backgrounds for videoconferencing. An experiment was conducted with twenty-four participants to examine the effects of E-Motioning on creativity and connectedness in Microsoft Teams compared to a control condition that uses the …

Living Entanglement: Toward An Entangled Design Nexus, Clee Zhuo Wang, Laurent Laurent Gutierrez Oct 2023

Living Entanglement: Toward An Entangled Design Nexus, Clee Zhuo Wang, Laurent Laurent Gutierrez

IASDR Conference Series

Human-nature encounters more and more take forms of conflict, struggle, resistance and denial. Beneath the surface question of “how to survive”, these encounters reveal “entanglement” as the fundamental condition of the world. This new world view, supported by systems thinking and posthumanism, radicalizes the anthropocentric reductionistic belief. The shift informs a reposition of design from a method to produce (techne) to an invitation to co-becoming (phronesis). This article starts with a cross-disciplinary literature review to elaborate the concept of “entanglement” in three levels: relationality, co-becoming and blurred subject / object division. Then, the field work of an ecoliteracy program (“The …

Co-Designing Strategic Ritual In Craft Beer: Churches, Denominations, Sects, And Mystics, Ian Parkman, David Turnbloom, Samuel Holloway

IASDR Conference Series

This study explores the co-design of strategic rituals by craft breweries and their customers. As many marketplaces have become increasingly overly-saturated, organizations have struggled to create meaningful connections between themselves and customers. Ritual consumption is a potentially powerful method to maintain strong customer relationships and reinforce differentiation. Drawing on the concept of co-design, described as a process of ‘joint inquiry and imagination’ whereby ‘problem and solution coevolve’, our exploratory study employs case study methodology to clarify how strategic rituals are co-designed by customers and organizations in the craft beer industry of the US Pacific Northwest. Specifically, drawing on the Sociology …

Emotional well-being manages people’s emotions and copes with challenges throughout life. Positive emotion and emotion regulation have beneficial effects on overall emotional well-being (Colombo et al., 2021; Quoidbach et al., 2010; Yoon & Kim, 2022). In the sensory perception of humans, touch interaction is regarded as a vital contributor to regulating our emotions. Considering that appropriate touch experience can lead to more positive emotion regulation, the study attempts to figure out how the touch experience relates to positive emotion regulation. Among several factors of tactile perception, our focus was on texture and weight, which are presumably closely related to positive …

Assembly Of An Inexpensive Rat Jugular Catheter Button Based On A Split-Septum Needleless Intravenous System, Mauricio Suarez, Elizabeth J. Cantrell, Ken T. Wakabayashi, Caroline E. Bass Oct 2023

Assembly Of An Inexpensive Rat Jugular Catheter Button Based On A Split-Septum Needleless Intravenous System, Mauricio Suarez, Elizabeth J. Cantrell, Ken T. Wakabayashi, Caroline E. Bass

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Rat intravenous self-administration is a widely-used animal model in the study of substance use disorders. Rats are tethered to a drug delivery system usually through a port or button that inter- faces the drug delivery system with a chronic indwelling jugular vein catheter. These buttons can be purchased commercially but are costly, presenting a significant economic barrier for many researchers. Many researchers manufacture buttons in-house from a combination of individual custom made and commercially available components, resulting in large variation in terms of how the animals are handled and the longevity of catheter patency. We have developed a jugular catheter …

The cardiac endothelium influences ventricular chamber development by coordinating trabeculation and compaction. However, the endothelial-specific molecular mechanisms mediating this coordination are not fully understood. Here, we identify the Sox7 transcription factor as a critical cue instructing cardiac endothelium identity during ventricular chamber development. Endothelial-specific loss of Sox7 function in mice results in cardiac ventricular defects similar to non-compaction cardiomyopathy, with a change in the proportions of trabecular and compact cardiomyocytes in the mutant hearts. This phenotype is paralleled by abnormal coronary artery formation. Loss of Sox7 function disrupts the transcriptional regulation of the Notch pathway and connexins 37 and 40, …

Pathogenic single-nucleotide variants (SNVs) and copy-number variant (CNV) deletions involving the FOXF1 transcription factor gene or CNV deletions of its distant lung-specific enhancer are responsible for alveolar capillary dysplasia with misalignment of pulmonary veins (ACDMPV), a rarely diagnosed lethal lung developmental disorder in neonates. In contrast to SNVs within FOXF1 and CNV deletions involving only the FOXF1 enhancer, larger-sized deletions involving FOXF1 and the adjacent, oppositely oriented lncRNA gene FENDRR have additionally been associated with hypoplastic left heart syndrome and single umbilical artery (SUA). Here, in an ACDMPV infant without any congenital heart defect or SUA, we identified a small …
