Applying Heidegger To Case Study Research In The Medical And Social Sciences, Patrick Whitehead Oct 2021

Applying Heidegger To Case Study Research In The Medical And Social Sciences, Patrick Whitehead

The Qualitative Report

In this article, I introduce an approach to the case-study method which is based on the work of German philosopher Martin Heidegger (1889-1976). Heidegger’s insights have been applied by philosophers and scholars to the social and health sciences, and this application has increased noticeably over the last decade. This article has been written so that non philosophers may benefit from Heidegger’s insights and apply them to their own research and practice. I begin with a description and overview of the shift in perspective that Heidegger has advocated, and how this shift has turned upside down the fields to which it …

Future As Medium, Georgie Nolan Jun 2021

Future As Medium, Georgie Nolan

Masters Theses

FUTURE AS MEDIUM through critical examination develops a working premise for advancing designed visualizations of the future. In an effort to build new models of practice that consciously work towards the future, I undertake a set of delicate negotiations rooted in critical inquiry as well as creative production, all expressed across three temporal contingencies: yesterday, today and tomorrow.

I work the terrain of the past as an assembled archive of speculative worlds created by architects, designers, and artists, and problematize the mediation of futures through a close reading of their world-building tools. I use this archive to make sense of …

And We're Rollin' On A River...: The Poetics And Musical Dimensions Of Breaking With Eurocentric Knowledge And Decolonizing Humanity, Hannah Renee Shelton Jan 2021

And We're Rollin' On A River...: The Poetics And Musical Dimensions Of Breaking With Eurocentric Knowledge And Decolonizing Humanity, Hannah Renee Shelton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

American society to date is wearing a mask. Although claiming to secure rights and liberites for all, American society hides under Eurocentrism's guise which overvalorizes the white maleand undervalorizes minority bodies through reason, space, and place. Therefore, I assert there must be an epistemology which breaks from Eurocentricism. Utilizing poetics as a revalorizing logic, I will ask: How can poetics, as a legitimate source of knowledge, decolonize humanity? Keeping within the American scope, I employ critical race theory and theorists to demonstrate the dangers of employing hegemonic knowledge. I will then utilize poetry, literary devices, jazz, and blues to demonstrate …

A Job Guarantee Proposal For Austria: Public Policy For Full Employment And The Reduction Of Poverty And Inequality, Daniel Haim Ms Jan 2021

A Job Guarantee Proposal For Austria: Public Policy For Full Employment And The Reduction Of Poverty And Inequality, Daniel Haim Ms

Theses - Graduate Programs in Economic Theory and Policy

The Austrian labor market has experienced high rates of involuntary unemployment for several years, and the COVID-19 pandemic has likely exacerbated the problem. Part-time employment rates, especially high for women, have fed into time-related underemployment. Many people have left the labor force wanting to work. Aside from the short-lived Aktion 20,000 program, labor market policies have been ineffective in addressing these issues. A different, more promising approach is the job guarantee. In a job guarantee, the state acts as an employer-of-last resort, granting everyone willing to work the right to a job at a minimum wage. This thesis argues that …

Fairness, Copyright, And Video Games: Hate The Game, Not The Player, Shani Shisha Jan 2021

Fairness, Copyright, And Video Games: Hate The Game, Not The Player, Shani Shisha

Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal

Creative communities often rely on social norms to regulate the production of creative content. Yet while an emerging body of literature has focused on isolated accounts of social norms operating in discrete, small-scale creative industries, no research to date has explored the social norms that pervade the world’s largest content microcosm—the sprawling video game community.

Now a veritable global phenomenon, the video game industry has recently grown to eclipse the music and motion picture industries. But despite its meteoric rise, the video game industry has provoked little attention from copyright scholars. This Article is the first to explore the shifting …

The Yin And Yang Of Corporations And Democracy, Franklin A. Gevurtz Jan 2021

The Yin And Yang Of Corporations And Democracy, Franklin A. Gevurtz

McGeorge School of Law Scholarly Articles

These are perilous times for American democracy. Among the threats, many point to the power of corporations. This article examines that threat by considering a series of dualisms characterizing the relationship between corporations and democracy.

This begins with a look at the anti- as well as the pro-democratic impacts of the earliest corporations and the paradoxes with respect to democracy created during the evolution of corporate law. The article then looks at internal corporate governance (so-called “corporate” or “shareholder democracy”) to show how, on the one hand, it contains features addressing some of the greatest current threats to American democracy, …

Environmental Ethics, Survival And Apocalypse: An Analysis Of Margaret Atwood’S Maddaddam Trilogy, Sarawut Kururatphan Jan 2021

Environmental Ethics, Survival And Apocalypse: An Analysis Of Margaret Atwood’S Maddaddam Trilogy, Sarawut Kururatphan

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This thesis examines the connection of ethics and survival in the pre- and post-apocalyptic worlds in Margaret Atwood's MaddAddam trilogy: Oryx and Crake (2003), The Year of the Flood (2009), and MaddAddam (2013). It investigates the author’s imaginings of a dystopian society marked by rampant technocratic capitalism and unchecked scientism in Oryx and Crake. Applying Murray Bookchin's social ecology to shed light on the root causes of the apocalypse, it argues that hierarchical ideology and diversiform inequality deeply rooted in society lead to warped ethics, affecting the crisis. This thesis also examines environmental ethics which is embedded in the belief …

How Can We Achieve Accountability In Policing? The (Not-So-Secret) Ingredients To Effective Police Reform, Michael D. White, Henry F. Fradella, Michaela Flippin Jan 2021

How Can We Achieve Accountability In Policing? The (Not-So-Secret) Ingredients To Effective Police Reform, Michael D. White, Henry F. Fradella, Michaela Flippin

Lewis & Clark Law Review

The summer of 2020 was marked by a series of high-profile police killings of citizens, highlighting excessive force as the most pernicious form of racial injustice in American policing. The persistence of the excessive use of force problem over decades raises serious questions regarding what we know about police accountability, and has led some to argue for defunding or even abolishing the police. However, the roadmap to effective police accountability is tangible and known. In this Article, we delineate eight guiding principles and eight strate-

Restoring The Balance Of Copyright: Antitrust, Misuse, And Other Possible Paths To Challenge Inequitable Licensing Practices, Michelle M. Wu

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Libraries’ purposes of ensuring access to and preservation of information have been compromised as licensing increasingly replaces ownership. This article outlines various novel legal strategies that libraries could use to restore copyright’s intended balance, including antitrust, preemption, misuse, and unconscionability.

Development Of An Instrument Measuring Existential Authenticity, Misty M. Richmond Jul 2020

Development Of An Instrument Measuring Existential Authenticity, Misty M. Richmond

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to develop an instrument to measure existential authenticity in adults. Existential authenticity was defined as awareness of the existential givens in the human experience as defined by Irvin Yalom. This construct is theorized as the goal of existential psychotherapy, which is a meaning-centered psychotherapy aligned with the purpose of providing clients with the tools to cope with life's negativities and live a meaningful life. Many diagnostic conditions, including depression, psychological trauma, and anxiety, are conceptualized as amenable to the benefits of existential psychotherapy and the journey towards existential authenticity.

Janus And The Future Of Collective Bargaining: Rhetorically Predicting A First Amendment Right To Negotiation, Thomas J. Freeman, Aaron Mckain, Destynie J.L. Sewell Jul 2020

Janus And The Future Of Collective Bargaining: Rhetorically Predicting A First Amendment Right To Negotiation, Thomas J. Freeman, Aaron Mckain, Destynie J.L. Sewell

William & Mary Business Law Review

The importance of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Janus v. American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees has been widely recognized for its effect on reducing the power and influence of public unions. A close reading of the majority opinion provides a clue that compulsory collective bargaining itself may be settling into the court’s crosshairs. Collective bargaining is an important tool, by which labor can reduce the often-inherent power imbalance it has with ownership and management. Yet as this Article outlines, the interests of individual workers can often be at odds with those other workers workers, particularly those …

A Phenomenological Study Of The Lived Experience Of Online Instructors Of Theological Reflection At Christian Institutions Accredited By The Association Of Theological Schools, Judy Arline Jowers Apr 2020

A Phenomenological Study Of The Lived Experience Of Online Instructors Of Theological Reflection At Christian Institutions Accredited By The Association Of Theological Schools, Judy Arline Jowers

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to describe the lived experience of teaching theological reflection in the online environment for instructors at Christian institutions accredited by the Association of Theological Schools. The central theories guiding this study were reflective practice and transformative learning theory as they explore the relationship between experience and reflection. Since relatively few inquiries have been published on the ways in which seminary professors assist future religious leaders in the use of reflective practice, the central research question for this study was: How do instructors at Christian institutions accredited by the Association of Theological Schools …

A Resistance In Red: Ideographs In The Handmaid's Tale, Jessica Marie Wozniak Mar 2020

A Resistance In Red: Ideographs In The Handmaid's Tale, Jessica Marie Wozniak

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the first season of the television show The Handmaid’s Tale, in order to better understand why the program has resonated in this historical moment to the extent that political activists use costumes from the show in their protests. I applied McGee’s (1980) ideograph theory in combination with a feminist lens to identify and explore five prominent symbols in the show. One ideograph in particular, , is especially dynamic in that it transforms from a marker of oppression to one of solidarity. I argue that the ideographs, which are highly gendered and mainly visual in nature, give The …

Trans Action And Poetic Justice: Retrospective Trans Narratives Of High School, Mary Waring Jan 2020

Trans Action And Poetic Justice: Retrospective Trans Narratives Of High School, Mary Waring

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

Trans students are part of a heteronormative culture of shared spaces within secondary education. Spaces that are complicated by external and internal factors that simultaneously contradict and complement each other. Functioning within a Queer Theory framework, this qualitative study explores the complex relationships between student agency, student identity, and school function, as expressed in the retrospective accounts of five trans participants who all attended suburban high schools in New York. Poetic transcription challenges the extant research of trans students. Studies that predominately consolidate the transgender experience under the umbrella of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and questioning (LGBTQ), a conflation that …

Judging Hypocrisy, Todd E. Pettys Jan 2020

Judging Hypocrisy, Todd E. Pettys

Emory Law Journal

Editorialists, politicians, and others sometimes accuse U.S. Supreme Court Justices of hypocrisy, especially when they believe that divisions among the Justices are the product of partisan loyalties rather than good-faith differences in impartial legal judgment. These hypocrisy charges pose a serious threat to the Court’s legitimacy. In legal circles and elsewhere, however, one finds a remarkable lack of clarity about what hypocrisy is and the moral precepts that define its boundaries. As a result, participants in public discourse about the Court can easily find themselves talking past one another. To be assured that the Justices are not hypocrites with respect …

Afrofuturism In Animation: Self Identity Of African Americans In Cinematic Storytelling, Dana Barnes Jan 2020

Afrofuturism In Animation: Self Identity Of African Americans In Cinematic Storytelling, Dana Barnes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

My work addresses the importance of self-identity within the Black culture of the United States of America through the depiction of an African American boy who must look into himself to overcome a difficult bullying situation. Animation as a medium is an ideal tool for interrogating the Western perspective of identity through cinematic storytelling. Using established animation methods, I created a visual narrative to portray the impact self-identity has on an individual's actions in certain social conditions. The film expands the medium of animation to subvert the narrative expectations of bullying and presents the idea of identity as a nonconforming …

Privacy At Work: A Review And A Research Agenda For A Contested Terrain, Devasheesh P. Bhave, Laurel H. Teo, Reeshad S. Dalal Jan 2020

Privacy At Work: A Review And A Research Agenda For A Contested Terrain, Devasheesh P. Bhave, Laurel H. Teo, Reeshad S. Dalal

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Privacy in the workplace is a pivotal concern for employees and employers. Employees expect to be in control of the personal information and access they provide to the organization. Employers, however, expect extensive information regarding their employees as well as extensive access to employees’ presence. The chasm between these two often competing expectations has been magnified by regulatory and technological trends. We begin the review by integrating viewpoints from multiple disciplines to disentangle definitions of privacy and to delineate the privacy contexts of information privacy and work environment privacy. We then identify the key stakeholders of privacy in the workplace …
