This capstone experience explores the role of a Prospective Payment System (PPS) Coordinator within an inpatient rehabilitation setting and how the skills of an occupational therapist qualify the profession to contribute to the success of a PPS team. A literature review revealed the importance of non-traditional education placements within the occupational therapy curriculum to provide well-rounded experiences to students to leverage their professional careers. A needs assessment revealed a need to identify patient outcome trends within different Rehabilitation Impairment Categories at the capstone site. The purpose of this project is to address the benefits of care related to nurse and patient interactions. Throughout the project we have researched these benefits within different specialties of medicine. Some different specialties we studied include, communication in the ICU (intensive care unit), communication within the palliative/hospice setting, communication in the ED (emergency department), communication in the med surgical setting, patients’ perception of nurse/ patient interactions, nurse communication techniques and training, and lastly the costs of effective and ineffective communication.

American adult guardianship needs reform. Thankfully, there is a small but dedicated reform movement that sheds helpful light on problems of underfunding, inattention, and abuse. While the movement’s efforts are needed, this Note argues it is a mistake to focus solely on the ways the guardianship system is sometimes harmful to people who already have access to guardianship. Few reformers consider the needs of people who would benefit from a guardian but do not have anyone to petition the court on their behalf.

This service-learning project surveyed undergraduate students as well as Boise State alumni about a prospective Pre-Med mentorship program being implemented at Boise State University. Aspiring medical school students at Boise State University lack the connections and relationships with upperclassmen and alumni to help prepare them to be competitive applicants. My project proposes a Pre-Med mentorship program to be implemented at Boise State University in the fall semester of the 2024 school year.

High blood pressure (HBP), also known as Hypertension (HTN), is a common diagnosis for primary care office visits in the United States; however, a persistent gap remains between the stated public health targets and achieved blood pressure (BP) control rates in the United States (US). In a small sample of patients with essential HTN (ICD 10: I10) receiving primary care at a mid-western Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), a chart audit tool revealed 10 out of 10 patients achieved BP control during the measurement period (defined as a BP reading <140/90). Quality improvement (QI) analysis revealed the bigger picture: Achieved BP control rates of patients does not reflect the 2017 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association HBP guidelines. Additionally, the author found potential care gaps for patients in elevated BP (120-129/>80; n=34) and Stage 1 HTN (130-139/80-89; n=44) categories (who …

This dissertation examines the history of music’s use for healing purposes in Antiquity and the Middle Ages and explores the contributions of Islamic medicine on historical musical therapy. It begins in ancient Greece with an examination of polytheistic ancient Greek music and medicine, moves to the role of music in Byzantine healing institutions after the Christianization of Greece, and to its role in bīmāristāns during the Abbasid, Mamluk, and Ottoman periods. Ultimately, it seeks to describe how music was used therapeutically in ancient Greek, Byzantine, and Islamic institutions of healing. The burden of pain is significant and current pain treatments are often ineffective. Opiate use has led to an epidemic, requiring alternative pain medications that are more effective and non-addictive. Voltage-gated sodium channel NaV1.7 is preferentially expressed in pain-sensing neurons. Mutations in NaV1.7 can cause disorders ranging from intense pain to complete painlessness in humans, suggesting that its inhibition could provide analgesia without CNS side-effects or addictive potential. Indeed, existing non-selective NaV channels blockers prevent pain, but their utility is limited due to serious side-effects caused by inhibition of NaV isoforms expressed in the heart and brain. Background: Medical aid in dying (MAID) is a process by which a terminally ill adult with a prognosis of six months or less can request prescription medications to end their life. Colorado’s End-of-Life Options Act requires that two physicians participate in the process to certify terminal illness and prescribe medications. Nearly all rural and frontier counties face shortages of medical professionals. These conditions challenge rural residents who want to access MAID. Advanced practice registered nurses and physician assistants can address gaps in rural and frontier counties; on average, they outnumber physicians in these communities.

Background: Cesarean section delivery rate in the United States has reached an alarming rate of over 30%. African American women experience a higher cesarean birth rate compared to Caucasian Women. The repeat c-section rate for all patients is greater than 80%. These findings underscore the need for intervention to reduce primary cesarean section deliveries in African American Women.

Objective: This quality improvement project aimed to implement caregiver education on the ACOG/SMFM definition of the first and second-stage labor arrest disorder to reduce primary cesarean section birth for African American women.

The purpose of this pilot study was to examine influences of interaction with a trained facility therapy dog on a sample of high school students. Much of the existing literature on animal assisted therapy interaction engages with populations of younger children, college-aged adults, the elderly. This small sample (n=8) of adolescents provides insight into a population that despite benefiting from the interventions, is not widely studied. Emotional regulation and grit inventories were used to compare scores before and after direct interactions with the therapy dog. PURPOSE: Early detection of brain metastases (BMs) is critical for prompt treatment and optimal control of the disease. In this study, we seek to predict the risk of developing BM among patients diagnosed with lung cancer on the basis of electronic health record (EHR) data and to understand what factors are important for the model to predict BM development through explainable artificial intelligence approaches accurately.

The Singapore Management University undertook the fifth wave of the Public Cleanliness Satisfaction Survey (PCSS) with 2,020 Singapore residents providing responses to the survey from July to October 2022, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2022 wave of the PCSS continued to reflect an overall satisfaction with public cleanliness in Singapore, similar to the last PCSS in 2021. Majority of survey respondents (92%) were satisfied with the cleanliness of public spaces that they had recently visited, with no change from 2021. Satisfaction with the cleanliness of food outlets saw the largest decrease (by 2.1%) among all location types, to 82.7%. Nevertheless, …

This thesis frames the abortion debate by dividing the pro-life position into two premises: that the government must protect human beings’ right to life, and that an unborn human organism is a human being. Patient and family-centered care strategies see patients and families as valuable healthcare team members. Such strategies thus treat these groups as essential clinical partners in providing safe, high-quality care. Participation, collaboration, and shared decision-making are central to this framework. Historically, hospitals have relied on physical presence at the bedside as a prerequisite to engaging families in the shared decision-making process. Visitor restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic removed the primary strategy for family participation: physical presence. Healthcare organizations rapidly deployed mobile devices to help minimize the exposure of healthcare providers and provide video visits for family members. This deployment was often …
