This paper explores some causes and effects of this gap such as miscommunication, ableism, and discrimination as key issues that are damaging to the Deaf community and lead to further health problems and stress. It also examines the difficulty of acquiring an interpreter through social, political, and economic lenses. Objective

Health professional education researchers have documented increased training on shared decision-making (SDM) skills in undergraduate as well as continuing professional development (CPD). In this review, we seek to understand the current methods and approaches to teaching SDM for healthcare providers and trainees.

Methods

This scoping review involved the systematic search of 4 databases: MEDLINE, ERIC, PsycINFO, and Scopus for qualitative and quantitative studies literature covering the topic of teaching SDM in medical education.

Results

This evocative autoethnographic study explored the lived experiences of a mature doctoral student navigating grief and loss while progressing through a doctoral program. The research connected the personal narrative of the author a nurse, educator, wife, mother, and widow to broader themes of resilience, identity, and persistence in higher education. Using narrative inquiry and self-reflective vignettes, this dissertation sought to illuminate how grief intersects with academic life, shaping both personal meaning and scholarly perseverance.

Background: Early palliative care in intensive care units improves outcomes and reduces costs, yet referrals are often delayed. At J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital’s medical intensive care unit (MICU), baseline median time to consultation was 112 hours (mean=246), exceeding recommended benchmarks and highlighting the need for a standardized process.

Purpose: This quality improvement project evaluated a nurse-driven screening tool to improve timeliness and consistency of palliative care consultations in the MICU.

Background & aims: Treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) prior to liver transplantation (LT) has been reported; however, ICIs may elevate the risk of allograft rejection and impact other clinical outcomes. This study aims to summarize the impact of ICI use on post-LT outcomes.

Methods: In this individual patient data meta-analysis, we searched databases to identify HCC cases treated with ICIs before LT, detailing allograft rejection, HCC recurrence, and overall survival. We performed Cox regression analysis to identify risk factors for allograft rejection.

The first 5 decades of research in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) were dominated by the cytarabine plus anthracyclines backbone, with advances in strategies including allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, high-dose cytarabine, supportive care measures, and targeted therapies for the subset of patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia. Objectives: Palliative care (PC) is rare for patients with sickle cell disease (SCD). This study evaluated clinician attitudes toward PC for SCD.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted between October 2022 and February 2023. Clinicians were recruited from institutions across the United States.

Results: Eighty-six participants completed the survey. Most were physicians (90%), female (72%), had >10 years of experience (63%), and lacked prior PC training (57%). Most participants agreed (83%) that patients with SCD would benefit from PC, disagreed (99%) that PC is only for dying patients, and expressed interest (91%) in learning about PC interventions. Purpose: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the association between the Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes-Palliative Care (ECHO-PC; ECHO Model–Based comprehensive educational and telementoring intervention) for health care professionals (HCPs) and change in patient-reported quality-of-life (QOL; Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General [FACT-G]) among patients with advanced cancer. This dissertation examined the impact of job, home, and leisure crafting on perceptions of five markers of positive work identity among employees with chronic mental and physical illnesses. It was hypothesized that all forms of crafting would be positively related to work identity perceptions when examined independently, and that job crafting would be the strongest predictor when the crafting categories were examined together. BACKGROUND: Mayo Test Drive (MTD): Mayo Test Development through Rapid Iteration, Validation and Expansion, is a web-based remote cognitive assessment platform for self-administered neuropsychological measures with previously demonstrated validity and reliability. The purpose of this study was to explore the effectiveness of a multi-method approach for ethics education. The investigators measured occupational therapy (OT) students’ self-efficacy for ethical decision-making and explored their perception of what contributed to their confidence in understanding the American Occupational Therapy Association’s (AOTA) 2020 Occupational Therapy Code of Ethics. Training and education about grief counseling has been stagnant, stalling the creativity and novel practice when working with bereaved individuals. Counselors in Training often receive minimal education and training in grief, even though clients will ultimately experience this phenomenon. Aim: Neurofilament light chain (NfL) is a nonspecific sensitive biomarker of axonal damage.

Methods: This case series identified cancer patients with neurological complications who had serum NfL measurements and paired these results to outcomes.

Results: NfL serum levels were available in 15 patients with hematological malignancies or solid tumors. The neurological complications studied were immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome, immune checkpoint inhibitor-related encephalopathy, anoxic brain injury, Guillain-Barre syndrome, hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, transverse myelitis, paraneoplastic syndrome, central nervous system demyelinating disorder and chronic lymphocytic inflammation with pontine perivascular enhancement responsive to steroids. All patients but one with serum NfL >900 pg/ml died …

The poorer functioning and greater morbidity and mortality risk in those with greater life course socioeconomic disadvantage has led to the search for the biological processes that underlie these associations, including accelerated cellular and system aging. Our study examines whether a DNA methylation profile of the pace of biological aging (DunedinPACE) and a multi-system index of physiological dysregulation (allostatic load (AL)) mediate associations between life course socioeconomic disadvantage (SESDIS) and both physical function (gait speed, chair stand time) and survival. INTRODUCTION: Acute food insecurity (FI) significantly impacts cancer patients' health, exacerbating physical and psychological burdens. While current interventions address chronic FI, acute cases remain undermanaged. Legacy of Hope, a Philadelphia-based non-profit, addresses this gap through its Emergency Patient Support Network (EPSN), offering free bi-weekly groceries to patients facing acute FI.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: The pilot study evaluated EPSN's impact utilizing the Legacy of Hope Acute Food Insecurity (LOHAFI) survey, which was performed at baseline and two weeks post-intervention. To examine the ethical perspective, the dissertation lays out how nudges interact with and enhance the biomedical principles of autonomy and beneficence.
