If a CAM treatment option is evidence-based, there is a strong argument that medical doctors should advise of this option for treatment to satisfy their duty. CAM practitioners should also provide details of options for treatment within their …

Models Of Disease, Chris Del Mar, Jenny Doust, Paul Glasziou

Christopher Del Mar

[Excerpt] What we will do here is set out some models of disease, and then apply them to some clinical problems to see how the models shape up. The models of disease we discuss are not all mutually exclusive, but different ways of viewing the clinical problems we encounter. The models include: *Cause and effect models, and their several variants; *‘edge of the distribution’ illnesses (also known as ‘spectrum disorders’); *Spontaneously remitting and self-perpetuating illnesses; and *‘alternative’ medicine models. These are all ‘transparent box’ approaches to disease: that is, a model of how the disease works, which in turn should …

Perceptions About The Impact Of Global Medical Travel On Poorer Populations In India, Blair Gifford, Sinyoung Park, Sharmila Anand Jan 2009

Perceptions About The Impact Of Global Medical Travel On Poorer Populations In India, Blair Gifford, Sinyoung Park, Sharmila Anand

Department of Health Administration Faculty Publications

There is anecdotal evidence that the increasing focus on global medical travel health services for foreigners in India is likely to exacerbate the different levels of access to health services between India’s wealthy and poor populations. However, surveyed physicians (n=177) at three hospitals in New Delhi indicated positive attitudes to global medical travel, especially in regards to global medical travel’s effects on poorer populations. Overall, these results appear to be the result of respondents’ support of the economic development, new medical technologies, and increased medical training that comes from the health infrastructure investments needed to attract foreign patients.

This exploratory study uses a sequential design combining quantitative and qualitative methodology to explore the worldview of allopathic and naturopathic physicians. Using survey research, the study identifies five basic components of competing worldviews among allopathic (n = 550) and naturopathic physicians (n = 399). It measures agreement among the two groups with these components and explores their influence upon support for …

Herbal medicine is one of the oldest healing practices known to humankind and continues to be practiced today despite the numerous challenges modern society poses. As Julie Stone and Joan Mathews illuminate in Complimentary Medicine and the Law, “Plant-based remedies have been the principal source of medicines in healing traditions around the world and, as the World health Organization is at pains to remind us, 80 percent of the world’s population still depends …
