More people are relying on alternative practices and less conventional therapies for a wide variety of problems. Alternative therapies have gained increasing popularity, recognition, and usage in the past decade. Minimal knowledge exists regarding the alternative health care practices of the essentially homebound population who may be more likely to use alternative forms of health care due to the difficulty in leaving home and in following with certain cultural beliefs and practices. Chronic pain is one of the most pervasive and expensive health care problems in society today. Fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis are chronic disease states which currently have no cure. A common complaint among these patients is constant and unremitting pain, which often worsens with inactivity. At this time treatment for both disease processes is essentially palliative, supportive and aimed at symptom relief; A quasi experimental design was used to determine if there were any significant differences in pain perception between persons with FM or RA receiving therapeutic touch (TT) and a placebo treatment (PT). The purpose of this study was to describe the extent that nurse practitioners acquire knowledge, evaluate, recommend, and teach the safe use and acquisition of herbal remedies to their patients. Additionally, the study sought to investigate factors associated with the frequency nurse practitioners recommended herbal remedies. A survey was constructed and mailed to 600 randomly selected members of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners; Of the 304 returned questionnaires, 264 of the respondents identified exclusively as family nurse practitioners (FNP). Alternative medicine covers a broad range of healing philosophies, approaches and therapies. When these therapies are used alone they are referred to as ' alternative'. When they are used with conventional therapies or other alternative therapies then they are referred to as complimentary.

Alternative medicine also embraces health beliefs and practices that fall outside of orthodox medicine. They offer the opportunity for an individual or case manager to explore alternative forms of healing when conventional treatment alone is not effective. Research has shown an increased interest in alternative medicine for the treatment of chronic illness.
