Alternative Health Practices Of Homebound Adults In Northeast Mississippi, Jenny Barnes
Alternative Health Practices Of Homebound Adults In Northeast Mississippi, Jenny Barnes
MSN Research Projects
More people are relying on alternative practices and less conventional therapies for a wide variety of problems. Alternative therapies have gained increasing popularity, recognition, and usage in the past decade. Minimal knowledge exists regarding the alternative health care practices of the essentially homebound population who may be more likely to use alternative forms of health care due to the difficulty in leaving home and in following with certain cultural beliefs and practices. The focus of this descriptive study was to describe the alternative health practices of home health clients and how these practices may effect care in the primary care …

"A Myth Becomes Reality": Kaspar Hauser As Messianic Wild Child , Ulrich Struve
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
The topos of the "Wild Child" occupies an important place in the mythic and literary imagination of the West. The European climax of a long line of wild children, Kaspar Hauser was a nineteenth-century German foundling whose fate has inspired a host of novels, dramas, novellas, poems, songs, and movies, even an opera and a ballet. It has been treated by Paul Verlaine, R. M. Rilke, and Klaus Mann, by the Dada poet Hans Arp, by the dramatist Peter Handke, and by the filmmaker Werner Herzog. This article offers a brief historical sketch of Hauser's life before discussing a key …
Proposition 215: De Facto Legalization Of Pot And The Shortcomings Of Direct Democracy, Michael Vitiello
Proposition 215: De Facto Legalization Of Pot And The Shortcomings Of Direct Democracy, Michael Vitiello
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
In 1996, California voters passed Proposition 215, officially titled The Compassionate Use Act of 1996, and popularly known as the "medical marijuana" initiative. This initiative allows qualifying people and their caregivers immunity from criminal prosecution when the state attempts to charge them with possession or cultivation of marijuana. Professor Vitiello uses the medical marijuana initiative as a case study illustrating flaws in California's ballot initiative process He examines the history of the initiative process in California, misleading aspects of the campaign for Proposition 215, and ambiguities in the proposition's language. Concluding that the initiative process as it now stands fosters …
The Professional Decline Of Physicians In The Era Of Managed Care, Aimee E. Marlow
The Professional Decline Of Physicians In The Era Of Managed Care, Aimee E. Marlow
New England Journal of Public Policy
Physicians have long enjoyed prestige, power, and autonomy, but the rise of managed care organizations has drastically changed their status. Many doctors are in thrall to the financial well-being of the corporations that employ them, their knowledge and expertise controlled and manipulated in the interest of profit maximization. This article investigates the professional decline of physicians, citing the use of gag clauses, incentives to withhold care, and the breakdown of their authority. In an effort to regain some measure of control, physicians have taken their concerns to the public, supporting state and federal legislation that attempts to curb questionable managed …

Utilization Of Therapeutic Touch In Clients Diagnosed With Chronic Pain, Rosa Matonti
Utilization Of Therapeutic Touch In Clients Diagnosed With Chronic Pain, Rosa Matonti
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Chronic pain is one of the most pervasive and expensive health care problems in society today. Fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis are chronic disease states which currently have no cure. A common complaint among these patients is constant and unremitting pain, which often worsens with inactivity. At this time treatment for both disease processes is essentially palliative, supportive and aimed at symptom relief; A quasi experimental design was used to determine if there were any significant differences in pain perception between persons with FM or RA receiving therapeutic touch (TT) and a placebo treatment (PT). Sixty-one subjects served as their own …
The Inclusion Of Herbal Remedies In The Patient Care Practices Of Nurse Practitioners, Diane Renee Stricker
The Inclusion Of Herbal Remedies In The Patient Care Practices Of Nurse Practitioners, Diane Renee Stricker
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to describe the extent that nurse practitioners acquire knowledge, evaluate, recommend, and teach the safe use and acquisition of herbal remedies to their patients. Additionally, the study sought to investigate factors associated with the frequency nurse practitioners recommended herbal remedies. A survey was constructed and mailed to 600 randomly selected members of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners; Of the 304 returned questionnaires, 264 of the respondents identified exclusively as family nurse practitioners (FNP). Because of the low response rate for specialties outside of family nurse practitioners, the study sample utilized consisted exclusively of …

Awareness And Usage Of Alternative Medicine In The Elderly Black Population, Deborah Martin Burks
Awareness And Usage Of Alternative Medicine In The Elderly Black Population, Deborah Martin Burks
Theses
Alternative medicine covers a broad range of healing philosophies, approaches and therapies. When these therapies are used alone they are referred to as ' alternative'. When they are used with conventional therapies or other alternative therapies then they are referred to as complimentary.
Alternative medicine also embraces health beliefs and practices that fall outside of orthodox medicine. They offer the opportunity for an individual or case manager to explore alternative forms of healing when conventional treatment alone is not effective. Research has shown an increased interest in alternative medicine for the treatment of chronic illness.
The overall goal of this …
The Role Of Good Nutrition. Good Physicians And The Advantages Of Alternative Medicine: An Educational Program For Senior Adults, Violet Connoyer
The Role Of Good Nutrition. Good Physicians And The Advantages Of Alternative Medicine: An Educational Program For Senior Adults, Violet Connoyer
Theses
This study examines previous and forthcoming knowledge of ancient medicinal remedies and solutions which provide and enable]e the acquisition of better and safer health care. Because of political reasons which appear to be dominant over all others, this inherent knowledge continues to seemingly remain obscure within the medical world and within our society. Continued education plays a vital role in the assessment of health care today because statistics stress that too many Eves are daily being snuffed out because of careless and improper drug administration and insidious drug reactions which follow thereafter. As a result, many people are striving to …
