The association structures formed by cationic liposomes and DNA(Deoxyribonucleic acid)-liposome have been effectively utilized as gene carriers in transfection assays. In this research study, cationic liposomes were prepared using a modified lipid film hydration method consisting of a lyophilization step for gene delivery applications. The obtained results demonstrated that the mean particle size had no significant change while the polydispersity (PDI) increased after lyophilization. The mean particle size slightly reduced after lyophilization (520 ± 12 nm to 464 ± 25 nm) while the PDI increased after lyophilization (0.094 ± 0.017 to 0.220 ± 0.004). In addition. The mean particle size …

Is Time Of Birth A Predictor Of Adverse Perinatal Outcome? A Hospital-Based Cross-Sectional Study In A Low-Resource Setting, Tanzania, Andrew H. Mgaya, Januarius Hinju, Hussein Kidanto

Faculty of Health Sciences, East Africa

Background Inconsistent evidence of a higher risk of adverse perinatal outcomes during off-hours compared to office hours necessitated a search for clear evidence of an association between time of birth and adverse perinatal outcomes.

Methods A cross-sectional study conducted at a tertiary referral hospital compared perinatal outcomes across three working shifts over 24 h. A checklist and a questionnaire were used to record parturients’ socio-demographic and obstetric characteristics, mode of delivery and perinatal outcomes, including 5th minute Apgar score, and early neonatal mortality. Risks of adverse outcomes included maternal age, parity, referral status and mode of delivery, and were assessed …

Introduction: In this paper, we report on a study exploring a potential typology of primary care patients referred for integrated behavioral health care (IBHC) services. We considered whether primary care patients could be grouped into meaningful clusters based on perceived need for behavioral health services, barriers to accessing care, and past-year service utilization. We also describe the development of a working partnership between our university-based research team and a federally qualified health center (FQHC).

Method: A total of 105 adult primary care patients referred for same-day behavioral health appointments completed a brief self-report questionnaire assessing past-year behavioral health concerns, …

We perform a full amplitude analysis of the process e+e−→J/ψD¯D, where D refers to either D0 or D+. A new charmoniumlike state X∗(3860) that decays to D¯D is observed with a significance of 6.5σ. Its mass is (3862+26−32 +40−13)  MeV/c2, and its width is (201+154−67 +88−82)  MeV. The JPC=0++ hypothesis is favored over the 2++ hypothesis at the level of 2.5σ. The analysis is based on the 980  fb−1 data sample collected by the Belle detector at the asymmetric-energy e+e− collider KEKB.

Federalism And Health Care In Canada: A Troubled Romance?, University Of Ottawa Law Rps Submitter, Colleen M. M. Flood, Bryan P. Thomas, William Lahey

Research Papers, Working Papers, Conference Papers

Canadian federalism fragments health system governance Although the Constitution has been interpreted as providing shared jurisdiction over health generally with respect to health care specifically the courts have interpreted the Constitution as giving direct jurisdiction to the provinces The Federal role in health care is therefore indirect but nevertheless potentially powerful For example the Federal government has used its spending powers to establish the Canada Health Act CHA which commits funding to provinces on condition they provide firstdollar public coverage of hospital and physician services However in recent times as federal contributions have declined the CHA has been weakly enforced …

Study Design: Narrative review. Objectives: Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is a reliable procedure, commonly used for cervical degenerative disc disease. For interbody fusions, autograft was the gold standard for decades; however, limited availability and donor site morbidities have led to a constant search for new materials. Clinically, it has been shown that calcium phosphate ceramics, including hydroxyapatite (HA) and tricalcium phosphate (TCP), are effective as osteoconductive materials and bone grafts. In this review, we present the current findings regarding the use of ceramics in ACDF. Methods: A review of the relevant literature examining the clinical use of ceramics …

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by chronic high blood glucose concentrations (hyperglycemia). When it is left untreated or improperly managed, it can lead to acute complications including diabetic ketoacidosis and non-ketotic hyperosmolar coma. In addition, possible long-term complications include impotence, nerve damage, stroke, chronic kidney failure, cardiovascular disease, foot ulcers, and retinopathy. Historically, universal methods to measure glycemic control for the diagnosis of diabetes included fasting plasma glucose level (FPG), 2-h plasma glucose (2HP), and random plasma glucose. However, these measurements did not provide information about glycemic control over a long period of time. To …

Five-Year Follow-Up Of A Coronally Advanced Flap Over Grafted Bone And Restorative Composite In Maxillary Recession Defect., Syeda Mahvash Hussain, Farhan Raza Khan

Section of Dental-Oral Maxillofacial Surgery

Periodontal plastic surgery has become a predictable method of managing gingival recession defects. In the current case report, a five-year follow-up of a coronally advanced flap surgery with bone graft along with endodontics and fixed prosthodontic rehabilitation is reported in the maxillary anterior sextant of a middle aged female. The present case demonstrates that deep and wide gingival defects can be treated with coronally positioned surgical flap without a connective tissue graft. Amultidisciplinary management approach was adopted in this case that yielded predictable outcome.

: Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) treatment is a rapidly expanding and emerging technology for cancer treatment. Direct CAP jet irradiation is limited to the skin and it can also be invoked as a supplement therapy during surgery as it only causes cell death in the upper three to five cell layers. However, the current cannulas from which the plasma emanates are too large for intracranial applications. To enhance efficiency and expand the applicability of the CAP method for brain tumors and reduce the gas flow rate and size of the plasma jet, a novel micro-sized CAP device (µCAP) was developed …

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Barbuda and Antigua’s national animal is the fallowdeer, Dama dama dama, a species native to the eastern Mediterranean that has been transported around the world by people during the last 8000 years. The timing and circumstances by which fallow deer came to be established on Barbuda are currently uncertain but, by examining documentary, osteological and genetic evidence, this paper will consider the validity of existing theories. It will review the dynamics of human–Dama relationships from the 1500s AD to the present day and consider how the meaning attached to this species has changed through time: from a symbol of colonial …

Oldest Skeleton Of A Plesiadapiform Provides Additional Evidence For An Exclusively Arboreal Radiation Of Stem Primates In The Palaeocene, Stephen B. Chester, Thomas E. Williamson, Jonathan I. Bloch, Mary T. Silcox, Eric J. Sargis

Publications and Research

Palaechthonid plesiadapiforms from the Palaeocene of western North America have long been recognized as among the oldest and most primitive euarchontan mammals, a group that includes extant primates, colugos and treeshrews. Despite their relatively sparse fossil record, palaechthonids have played an important role in discussions surrounding adaptive scenarios for primate origins for nearly a half-century. Likewise, palaechthonids have been considered important for understanding relationships among plesiadapiforms, with members of the group proposed as plausible ancestors of Paromomyidae and Microsyopidae. Here, we describe a dentally associated partial skeleton of Torrejonia wilsoni from the early Palaeocene (approx. 62Ma) of New Mexico, which …

After Closure: Options For Pursuing A High Performance Rural Health System, Andrew F. Coburn Phd May 2017

After Closure: Options For Pursuing A High Performance Rural Health System, Andrew F. Coburn Phd

Rural Hospitals (Flex Program)

Presented at the 2017 National Rural Health Association Annual Meeting. Coburn, a member of the Rural Policy Research Institute Panel, discussed the following key questions: What kind of rural health system is possible in places that cannot support a full-service hospital? How does a rural community navigate the transition from hospital-centric care toward new models that deliver high performance? What implementation support will be needed? Coburn noted that there is no single model for re-configuring the rural health system after hospital closure; local assets, affiliations and partnerships, financial and delivery flexibility and capacities must be critically assessed to determine the …

The Age Of Homo Naledi And Associated Sediments In The Rising Star Cave, South Africa, Paul H.G.M. Dirks, Eric M. Roberts, Hannah Hilbert-Wolf

KIP Articles

New ages for flowstone, sediments and fossil bones from the Dinaledi Chamber are presented. We combined optically stimulated luminescence dating of sediments with U-Th and palaeomagnetic analyses of flowstones to establish that all sediments containing Homo naledi fossils can be allocated to a single stratigraphic entity (sub-unit 3b), interpreted to be deposited between 236 ka and 414 ka. This result has been confirmed independently by dating three H. naledi teeth with combined U-series and electron spin resonance (US-ESR) dating. Two dating scenarios for the fossils were tested by varying the assumed levels of 222Rn loss in the encasing sediments: a …
