The Effect Of Systemic Doxycycline On Alveolar Bone Loss Following Periradicular Surgery, G. Reed Cummings
The Effect Of Systemic Doxycycline On Alveolar Bone Loss Following Periradicular Surgery, G. Reed Cummings
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Studies have shown an average of 0.5 mm to over 1.0 mm of bone loss following full thickness flap reflection. Recent investigations have revealed that the tetracycline family of antibiotics can prevent bone loss. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of systemic Doxycycline on crestal alveolar bone loss following periradicular surgery in Beagle dogs.
The experiment was divided into two phases. The first phase served as the control (Non-Doxycycline), the second phase as the experiment (Doxycycline). Full thickness flaps were reflected in the mandibular left or right quadrant (control side) of five Beagle dogs. Using a …
The Effect Of Root End Demineralization On Cementogenesis : A Long Term Investigation, Hamid R. Abedi
The Effect Of Root End Demineralization On Cementogenesis : A Long Term Investigation, Hamid R. Abedi
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Craig and Harrison12 examined the effect of demineralization of resected root ends on wound healing following periradicular surgery. Based on its microscopic evaluations from 4-45 days, it was proposed that demineralization of resected root ends enhances cementogenesis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the longer term effects of demineralization on cementogenesis using Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) or amalgam as root end filling materials. After completion of root canal therapy and endodontic surgery on seventy-two roots of mandibular second, third and fourth premolars of six beagle dogs, 32/72 of the root ends at random were etched with 50% …

Dilantin is an anticonvulsant drug commonly used in the treatment of epilepsy. This drug induces gingival hyperplasia as a side effect in the patients. In this study, transmission electron microscopy had been used to investigate the ultrastructures of Dilantin-induced gingival hyperplasia and normal gingiva of the patients. The result showed that ultrastructures of gingival fibroblasts and interstitial collagen fibers of hyperplastic gingiva were similar to those of normal gingiva, but the amount of collagen fibers seemed to be greater and denser in the hyperplastic gingiva.(ไดแลนตินเป็นยาที่นิยมใช้กันอย่างแพร่หลายในการป้องกันและรักษาอาการชักในผู้ป่วยด้วยโรคลมชัก ผลข้างเคียงที่สําคัญอันหนึ่งที่พบได้บ่อยในผู้ป่วยที่ใช้ยานี้คือ ทําให้เกิดการบวมโตของเหงือก งานวิจัยนี้เป็นการศึกษา ลักษณะโดยละเอียดของเหงือกบวมโตในผู้ป่วยที่ใช้ยาไดแลนตินเปรียบเทียบกับเนื้อเยื่อเหงือกปกติโดยใช้กล้องจุลทรรศน์อิเล็กตรอนชนิดทรานสมิชชั่น ผลการศึกษาพบว่าเนื้อเยื่อทั้งสองชนิดประกอบไปด้วยเซลล์ไฟโบรบลาสท์และเส้นใย ซึ่งส่วนใหญ่เป็นเส้นใยคอลลาเจนจํานวนมาก องค์ประกอบทั้งสองนี้ในเหงือกบวมโตมีลักษณะคล้ายกับที่พบในเหงือก ปกติ แต่พบว่าปริมาณและความหนาแน่นของเส้นใยคอลลาเจนในเหงือกบวมโตมีมากกว่าในเหงือกปกติ)

In the present study, we have demonstrated that human pulpal fibroblasts express alkaline phosphatase activity, which is corresponded with the reports that these cells can actually differentiate into odontoblast-like cells under proper condition. Furthermore, upon activation with 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D3, the level of enzyme alkaline phosphatase in these cells increased at least two fold within two days, suggesting the role of 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D3 in the process of pulpal cell differentiation. Surprisingly, when we stimulated pulpal fibroblasts with both 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D3 and transforming growth factor beta simutaneously, the level of alkaline phosphatase activity raised dramatically up to ten fold …

The responses of gingival and periodontal ligament (PDL) fibroblasts to hydroxyapatite have been studied in vitro. Sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) revealed that, in the presence of hydroxyapatite crystal, both gingival and PDL cells synthesized a 52-55 kDa protein, which cannot be seen in control culture. Futhermore, these cells also synthesized the higher amount of fibronectin as judged by Western analysis. These changes in protein synthesis corresponded with the electron-microscopic observation that both cell types increased extracellular matrix deposition between hydroxyapatite crystal and cell surface. Our results suggest that these cells can respond to hydroxyapatite crystal by increasing …

The C-Shaped root canal and C-Shaped orifice configuration in mandibular molars is one of the variation from typical root canal morphology which compromised the cleaning, shaping and filling of the root canals. The paper presented is a two-case report described root canal treatment of mandibular second molars with C-Shaped canal and C-Shaped orifice by using calcium hydroxide for intracanal medicament. The canals were filled with gutta percha by lateral condensation technique. Two years follow up is included.(คลองราก และรูเปิดคลองรากรูปอักษร C ในฟันกรามล่างเป็นหนึ่งในความแปรปรวนจากลักษณะกายวิภาคปกติของคลองรากฟัน ซึ่งทําให้ขั้นตอนในการรักษาคลองรากฟันมีความยากลําบากในการทําความสะอาดคลองรากขยายคลองราก และอุดคลองรากฟัน บทความนี้เป็นการนําเสนอรูปแบบและขั้นตอนการรักษาคลองรากฟันกรามล่างซี่ที่สองซึ่งมีคลองรากและรูเปิดคลองรากรูปอักษร C ในผู้ป่วย 2 ราย โดยใช้แคลเซียมไฮดรอกไซด์ เป็นยาใส่ในคลองรากฟัน และอุดคลองรากฟันด้วยกัตตาเปอร์ชา โดยวิธีแลเทอรัลคอนเดนเซชั่น ติดตามผลการรักษาในเวลา 2 ปี)

Current Thinking On Post And Core System And Other Options For Restoration Of The Endodontically Treated Tooth, Leevairoj Chalermpol
Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal
In the past few decades, there are the controversies in the proper treatment of the teeth after receiving endodontic treatment. The solutions seem to be concluded. This review of literature summarized the current thinking on post and core system, also the options for restoration of the endodontically treated teeth. Many concepts have been collected from the articles published by 1997. Many ideas have been given and may be useful for the reader to choose the proper techniques and materials when restoring the endodontically treated teeth.

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
119 mongrel dogs, brought to Chulalongkorn Veterinary Teaching Hospital, were investigated over a 150-day period. Divided into 4 groups (less than 0.5 yrs, 0.5 to 1.49 yrs, 1.5 to 4.99 yrs, and more than 4.99 yrs) the age of the animals was related to the severity of the accumulated calculi (P<0.05), particularly in the area of the buccal surface. The group, fed on a soft diet, had more calculi deposits than those fed a hard one.

A Pilot Study On The Short Term Effects Of The Herbst Appliance On The Glenoid Fossa, David A. Bennion
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate the initial effects of the Herbst appliance and determine through the use of common cephalometric radiographs that were optically enhanced and then digitally reproduced, if fossa migration is taking place. Fourteen, (6 male, 8 female), growing patients were treated by the same clinician for the correction of a Class II malocclusion using a modified Herbst appliance. Pretreatment (T1) standard lateral cephalometric radiographs and post Herbst treatment (TH) optically enhanced lateral cephalometric radiographs were taken. All radiographs were digitally captured and reproduced so 6 linear and 1 area …

Nurse Practitioner's Beliefs Regarding Controlled Substance Prescriptive Priviledges, Holly Taylor Robertson
MSN Research Projects
Prescriptive authority for controlled substances for advanced practice nurses has been a very controversial topic over the past years and continues to be an issue today. Research has shown that nurse practitioners prescribe medications appropriately but that barriers to nurse practitioner’s prescribing practices remain even th o u ^ legal authority has been granted. This descriptive study sought to describe the beliefs of nurse practitioners in the state of Mississippi concerning prescriptive privileges of controlled substances. Erickson, Tomlin, and Swain’s Theory of Modeling and Role-modeling (1983) provided the conceptual framework for this study. The research question asked in this study …

Oral Cancer Screening, Damon Omar Watson
Oral Cancer Screening, Damon Omar Watson
Honors Theses
Cancers of the oral cavity and pharynx have increased throughout the decades. Since oral cancer represents a small percentage of the total cancers in the United States, it is often overlooked. Though this is the case, the results of this cancer can be devastating. To address this issue, an Oral Cancer Screening was organized on August 14, 1996 at the West Michigan Cancer Center in Kalamazoo. This was a joint collaboration between the author, the West Michigan Cancer Center, and the Kalamazoo Valley Dental Society. This event allowed research to take place concerning the data obtained. Confidential results and information …
