Pharmacology courses in any institution are information intensive with a constant, high volume of new material. With that in mind, the standards that the American Dental Education Association set for Pharmacology include that: “the student must identify the influences drugs taken for non-dental purposes may have on a proposed treatment (…) and the student must recognize therapeutic agents used in the routine practice of clinical dentistry.” This requires that students at a minimum, recognize common drugs and know their major implications for dental therapy.

This learning tool has been created to address the drug recognition aspect of that standard.

Pacific Journal of Health

Over three years have passed since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. During these times we have experienced significant changes in all areas of our life. In healthcare, more attention was focused on COVID-19 than other concerns. An unexpected consequence of the pandemic was a silent progression of an increased spread of multi-resistant pathogens. While antibiotic use during the pandemic varied across healthcare settings, antibiotics were prescribed for COVID-19 patients, even though antibiotics are known not to be effective against viruses.1 In dentistry, antibiotics were prescribed to prevent potential dental infections, since many dental offices were not open. Antimicrobial …

Gingival Crevicular Flow (Volume) As A Biomarker Of Orthodontic Tooth Movement, Harrison Truman, Nina Stevens, Tyler Starley May 2023

Gingival Crevicular Flow (Volume) As A Biomarker Of Orthodontic Tooth Movement, Harrison Truman, Nina Stevens, Tyler Starley

Excellence Day

Tooth movement is caused by the application of force. In short, applied force strains structures present in the PDL space – cells, ligaments, blood vessels. Cells in the PDL are damaged by extension and by diminished oxygen supply due to compression of blood vessels. Compounds released from damaged or dead cells trigger an innate inflammatory response. One of the biomarkers of that response is increased formation of extracellular fluid (edema), specifically gingival crevicular fluid (GCF). Our goal is to monitor changes of GCF flow during the orthodontic treatment with Invisalign.

G. V. Black, the father of modern dentistry believed in extension for prevention. Today we have come a long way. We practice minimally invasive dentistry which is possible because of adhesion. We have eight generations of bonding systems. 4th generation is the gold standard, while 6th ,7th and 8th are used extensively. Direct restorations which involve minimally invasive procedure alternatives for carious lesion management, include the use of sealants, infiltration, atraumatic restorative treatment (ART), and selective carious tissue removal (e.g., indirect pulp capping, stepwise removal, or selective removal to soft dentine). Due to adhesion and the invention of higher quality …

A Review Of External Cervical Resorption, Sarah Makkiyah, Max Kazantcev May 2023

A Review Of External Cervical Resorption, Sarah Makkiyah, Max Kazantcev

Excellence Day

Invasive cervical resorption (ECR) is a complex form of external resorption. It is distinguished by its localization, its invasive nature, and the formation of a mineralized replacement tissue resembling cellular cementum. During initiation of ECR, the portal of entry is the cementum below the gingival epithelium, and resorption starts with localized destruction and removal of PDL. Response to PDL injury includes formation of a blood clot and inflammation, followed by granulation tissue, recruitment of macrophages, and multinucleated-cell differentiation.
