We evaluated the conductances for ion flow across the cellular and paracellular pathways of flounder intestine using microelectrode techniques and ion-replacement studies. Apical membrane conductance properties are dominated by the presence of Ba-sensitive K channels. An elevated mucosal solution K concentration, [K]m, depolarized the apical membrane potential (ψa) and, at [K]m less than 40 mM, the K dependence of ψa was abolished by 1-2 mM mucosal Ba. The basolateral membrane displayed Cl conductance behavior, as evidenced by depolarization of the basolateral membrane potential (ψb) with reduced serosal Cl concentrations, [Cl]s. …

We characterized the hyperpolarization of the electrical potential profile of flounder intestinal cells that accompanies inhibition of NaCl cotransport. Several observations indicate that hyperpolarization of ψa and ψb (Δψa,b) results from inhibition of NaCl entry across the apical membrane: (a) the response was elicited by replacement of mucosal solution Cl or Na by nontransported ions, and (b) mucosal bumetanide or serosal cGMP, inhibitors of NaCl influx, elicited Δψa,b and decreased the transepithelial potential (ψt) in parallel. Regardless of initial values, ψa and ψb approached the equilibrium potential for K (EK …

RAIN: Journal of Appropriate Technology
Volume 10, Number 2
Inside: What if Peace Broke Out?
RAIN began in October 1974 as a publication of ECO-NET, an environmental education network funded by the Hill Foundation and an Environmental Education grant. Its office was based in the Environmental Education Center at Portland State University. With a focus on the Pacific Northwest, particularly Oregon, RAIN originally described itself as a “bulletin board” with an “emphasis on environmental/energy related and communications kinds of information” and interested in “the evolutionary possibilities of inter-disciplinary connections.”

v, 44 p. : ill., map ; 28 cm. Bibliography.,from the abstract, "The spiny dogfish is the largest under-utilized resource of the northeastern fisheries of the U.S., yet little critical data is available on its biological parameters. This study describes the age-length relationships, growth and maxinrurn size for both males and females; estimates were also made of size at reproductive maturation. Dorsal fin spines were used to detennine the age of fish. The samples for data development were collected in 1976, 1979, 1980, and 1981 at sites in the Gulf of Maine and the New York Bight. . .

The Courier
Mme. Marguerite Yourcenar, distinguished French writer and the first woman to be elected to the Academie Francaise in its 346-year history, has generously presented seventeen of her books to the Syracuse University Libraries. Some are early editions of special value, and one, Nouvelles orientales (Gallimard, 1938), is extensively corrected in her own hand. All the books contain a presentation inscription.
Includes a comprehensive list of the books that were donated.
