Enclaves In The Cadillac Mountain Granite (Coastal Maine): Samples Of Hybrid Magma From The Base Of The Chamber, R. A. Wiebe, Diane R. Smith, M. Sturm, E. M. King, M. S. Seckler
Earth and Environmental Geosciences Faculty Research
The Cadillac Mountain intrusive complex is dominated by the Cadillac Mountain granite and a 2–3 km thick section of interlayered gabbroic, dioritic and granitic rocks which occurs near the base of the granite. The layered rocks record hundreds of injections of basaltic magma that ponded on the chamber floor and variably interacted with the overlying silicic magma. Magmatic enclaves, ranging in composition from 55 to 78 wt % SiO2, are abundant in granite above the layered mafic rocks. The most mafic enclaves are highly enriched in incompatible elements and depleted in compatible elements. Their compositions can be best …

Trends In Abundance Of The Gulf Of Maine Population Of Harbor Porpoise, Paula Ann Olson
Trends In Abundance Of The Gulf Of Maine Population Of Harbor Porpoise, Paula Ann Olson
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
Hundreds of harbor porpoise die each year as bycatch in the Gulf of Maine's sink gillnet fishery. In recent years, concern has arisen whether the Gulf of Maine population of harbor porpoise can sustain this level of bycatch. It is believed that the population may have declined, or is declining as a result of the incidental moralities. This paper reviews what is known about Gulf of Maine harbor porpoise demographics and how that information is incorporated into the management of the porpoise/fishery interaction. Included in this paper is a new study on the trend of relative abundance of harbor porpoise …

North American Members Of The Hydrellia Crassipes Species Group (Diptera: Ephydridae), D. L. Deonier
Insecta Mundi
The known members of the Hydrellia crassipes species group in North America are described or redescribed, including H. crassipes Cresson, H. procteri Cresson, H. saltator Deonier, H. amplecta n.sp., H. bryani n.sp., H. ocalae n.sp., and H. tibiospica n.sp. Adults of these species exhibit the following synapomorphies: dilated male metafemur and expanded (and flange din some) male metatibia and striate (fibrillate) distiphallus. Only a single species (H. tibiospica n.sp.) was reared from its host-plant species, Juncus debilis Gray, but there are associated habitat data to indicate that the entire species group may have sedges andrushes as host plants.

Western Reserve Studies Symposium
Patrick Campbell writes on John D. Rockefeller, Sr. and Jr.’s “deep appreciation for the natural environment” and their “keen sensitivity to landscape design” as evidenced in the landscape of their Cleveland summer home, Forest Hill. Abstract; originally published in Western Reserve Studies Symposium (11th:1996 : Cleveland, Ohio)

Acid-Base Regulation In Three Marine Teleosts: The Oyster Toadfish (Opsanus Tau), The Winter Flounder (Pseudopleuronectes Americanus), And The Long-Horned Sculpin (Myoxocephalus Octodecimspinosus), Dana Compton Mccullough
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)
In this study, three species of marine fish were exposed to a variety of dilute salinities in order to determine what effects exposure to diluted seawater may have on acid-base and ion balance. The oyster toadfish (Opsanus tau) and the winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus) are considered to be able to live in a broad range of salinities, euryhaline (Evans, 1979). The long-homed sculpin, Myoxocephalus octodecimspinosus, is considered to be a stenohaline fish, not able to withstand drastic changes in ambient salinity (Claibome and Evans, 1988).
Initially, toadfish exposed to 20 mM diluted seawater took up …

What Do Workers Want? Employee Interests, Public Interests, And Freedom Of Expression Under The National Labor Relations Act, Cynthia Estlund
What Do Workers Want? Employee Interests, Public Interests, And Freedom Of Expression Under The National Labor Relations Act, Cynthia Estlund

Section 7 has been interpreted to protect only empioyee speech relating to terms and conditions of employment, while the First Amendment now protects public employees only when they speak on "matters of public concern." To a great extent, then, the kinds of protests that in the private sector are covered by section 7-those concerning the terms and conditions of employment-are unprotected by the First Amendment in the public sector. Conversely, the protests covered by the First Amendment-those on "matters of public concern"-lie beyond the scope of section 7 in the private sector. This largely unexplored aspect of section 7 doctrine …
