Analyzing The Enduring White Reception Of Raisin In The Sun: Defining And Reexamining The “Universal” Label, Kayla J. Baur May 2024

Analyzing The Enduring White Reception Of Raisin In The Sun: Defining And Reexamining The “Universal” Label, Kayla J. Baur

Student Theses

Hansberry’s intent to centralize the Black American family while simultaneously addressing divisive topics of race and gender positioned Raisin as a prescient, continuously relevant work that is open for interpretation for years to come. With this intent in mind, critics acclaimed Raisin and hailed it as a universal play for every theatergoer to enjoy. However, this enduring sentiment of Raisin as “universal” is a construct created by the predominantly-white theater industry. This perceived universality is dependent on the audience’s ability to find entertainment value in the story, even if the idea of only deriving amusement from the story undermines Hansberry’s …

Sex Offenders’ Cognitive Self-Change In Group Treatment: A Pre-/Posttest Study, Malinda Rae Peterson May 2024

Sex Offenders’ Cognitive Self-Change In Group Treatment: A Pre-/Posttest Study, Malinda Rae Peterson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Wisconsin policy makers implement sex offender treatment programs with the purpose of decreasing reoffending while increasing safety for victims and communities. Research has suggested that the cognitive behavioral therapy group curriculum, Thinking for a Change (T4C), has been effective for offenders; however, this program’s key component of cognitive self-change among sex offenders has yet to be researched. The purpose of the current study was to fill a gap in T4C research and, specifically, explore whether sex offender probationers gained the T4C component of cognitive self-change as compared to non-sex offender probationers from Wisconsin. Beck’s cognitive behavioral theory was used as …

Data were collected using a survey questionnaire, focus groups and interviews from 300 community residents and legal practitioners in the Joe Bar Community. The causes of mob justice in Liberia are multi-faceted. In addition to a weak judiciary, the country has a history …

Welfare As We Know It Now: Examination Of State-Level Effects Of Welfare Expenditure And Policy Restrictiveness On Crime And Group-Specific Arrests Over Twenty-Four Years Following Reform, Elizabeth Ann Sabbath May 2024

Welfare As We Know It Now: Examination Of State-Level Effects Of Welfare Expenditure And Policy Restrictiveness On Crime And Group-Specific Arrests Over Twenty-Four Years Following Reform, Elizabeth Ann Sabbath

Sociology ETDs

The current project investigates how two different ways of operationalizing welfare—as an expenditure or as a policy of restrictive regulations—could shape the distribution of crime rates within a place and over time. In addressing the significance of its measures, the project also explores how welfare interacts with the broader economic forces of a place to influence crime rates over time. Finally, the project explores how welfare measures can predict arrest rates disaggregated by different gender and race groups. Panel fixed effects measure whether within-state changes in crime and group-specific arrests are explained by expenditure and restrictiveness observed repeatedly from the …

Injustice: Parental Betrayal And The Exploitation Of Child Murder In The United States, Isabella Merlini May 2024

Injustice: Parental Betrayal And The Exploitation Of Child Murder In The United States, Isabella Merlini

Honors Scholar Theses

The following serves as an extensive literature review on the phenomena of filicide and familicide–the ultimate forms of parental betrayal–perpetrated within the United States. Subsequently highlighted is the theme that the people who should always take care of and love their children are sometimes also those who demonically arrange for their children’s very deaths, and while parents have the power to bring children into this world, they do not have the right to remove children from it. An overview of the unique perpetrations, victimologies, psychopathologies, and motivations that contribute to the classifications of filicide and familicide are further provided. Six …

Measuring Student Perceptions On Online Vs. Traditional Learning, Peyton Vittitoe, Betsy Matthews May 2024

Measuring Student Perceptions On Online Vs. Traditional Learning, Peyton Vittitoe, Betsy Matthews

Honors Theses

During the time of the global pandemic, COVID-19, there was a rapid transition in learning environments for schools across the country. During this transition, online based education was viewed extremely poorly by students, educators and even parents. Both students and educators thrived on human interaction in the classroom because it had been familiar to them their entire lives. This familiarity with human interaction was a very important factor for schools when designing learning plans and creating learning objectives. When the pandemic was at its peak, it was unsafe for schools to continue the traditional face-to-face learning methods, so the government …

Prosecutors’ And Police Chiefs’ Perception Of Crime In South Dakota, Maggie Erickson May 2024

Prosecutors’ And Police Chiefs’ Perception Of Crime In South Dakota, Maggie Erickson

Honors Thesis

PURPOSE:

This exploratory study regarding prosecutors' and police chiefs' perceptions of crime in South Dakota covers many aspects of crime, including available resources to address crime, perceptions of the criminal justice system, fear of crime, concern for specific crime categories, and crime-reducing measures. Studies specifically focusing on Criminal Justice actors’ perception of crime prove low in number at the national and state levels.

FINDINGS:

Findings indicate that prosecutors lack enough time, financial resources, and staff to effectively address crime, while police chiefs primarily view inadequate staffing as their biggest resource concern. While personal fear of crime or victimization for both …

Sustainable Manure Management In Intensified Corn Production Systems For Maintaining Crop Quality And Yield, Managing Soil Phosphorus, And Increasing Soil Health, Gabriella Burkett May 2024

Sustainable Manure Management In Intensified Corn Production Systems For Maintaining Crop Quality And Yield, Managing Soil Phosphorus, And Increasing Soil Health, Gabriella Burkett

Honors Theses

Dairy farmers often surface apply phosphorus (P)-based liquid manure to corn (Zea mays L.) for silage, supplementing with N fertilizers for optimum corn nitrogen (N), optimizing crop production while decreasing P loss to the environment. However, injecting manure may further conserve losses and reduce synthetic N fertilizer need. An experiment was conducted on a dairy farm in Breese, IL from May 2019 to April 2022 with two main treatments including (i) surface application of manure at P-based rate supplemented with 123 kg ha-1 synthetic N and (ii) manure injection at P-based rate supplemented with 17 kg ha-1 …

The Unintended Consequences Of Torture's Ineffectiveness, Russell L. Christopher May 2024

The Unintended Consequences Of Torture's Ineffectiveness, Russell L. Christopher

Texas A&M Law Review

Whether torture to extract true information—for example, military secrets or the location of a terrorist-planted bomb—is morally permissible and empirically effective is widely disputed. But many agree that such torture’s effectiveness is a necessary condition for its permissibility; if ineffective, then it is impermissible. Thus, the empirical issue has become crucial in deciding the moral issue. This Article addresses the empirical issue with a novel, non-empirical argument. Torture’s ineffectiveness not only ensures torture’s impermissibility but also exposes torture victims to criminal liability for any offenses they are tortured into committing. With torture as the most extreme and horrific form of …

A Federal Inmate’S Right To Stay Home, Jordan Thorn May 2024

A Federal Inmate’S Right To Stay Home, Jordan Thorn

Texas A&M Law Review

Since the start of the COVID–19 pandemic, the Federal Bureau of Prisons (“BOP”) has, for the first time in history, placed tens of thousands of inmates onto home confinement. Likely due to the unprecedented nature and rapid release of inmates to contain the virus, the BOP failed to timely update their policies and procedures surrounding the disciplinary system of inmates on home confinement. This failure to update resulted in the BOP removing inmates from home confinement and placing them back in prison for minor violations. Furthermore, when the BOP chose to remove an inmate from home confinement, it did so …
