Perceptions Of Using Multiple Measures For Student Placement At Rural Virginia Community Colleges, Whitney Bowling Jul 2024

Perceptions Of Using Multiple Measures For Student Placement At Rural Virginia Community Colleges, Whitney Bowling

Ed.D. Dissertations

Remedial courses have been part of the college landscape in the United States since at least the 1800s when nearly 250,000 students were placed into remedial courses. Traditionally, students who enrolled in remedial courses were placed into that course solely based on one test score. Students who enrolled in traditional remedial courses were more likely to not graduate than their peers placed into college-level English and Mathematics courses. This research aims to understand the rural Virginia community college English and mathematics professors’ perceptions of implementing and using multiple measures to place students into first-year English and mathematics courses. The data …

Sex Work, Antitrafficking, And Mobility, Simanti Dasgupta Jul 2024

Sex Work, Antitrafficking, And Mobility, Simanti Dasgupta

Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work Faculty Publications

With the HIV/AIDS epidemic gripping the world in the 1990s and the resurgence of the antitrafficking discourse in the 2000s, the sex work/abolitionist debate took center stage. Proponents of sex work uphold the labor and livelihood paradigm based on consent; the abolitionists, on the other hand, dismiss sex work as work to posit prostitution as the paradigmatic example of patriarchal violence toward women. The latter routinely conflate sex work with trafficking, and the former sharply demarcates them. Above all, this debate poses a stubborn ideological divide among feminists with serious policy implications for both the worker and the victim, nationally …

Criminal Activities As Threats To Security In The Caribbean, Marika Dawkins-Cavazos

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

This chapter presents an overview of the main criminal activities posing threats to security in the Caribbean region. How best to assess Caribbean security realities, the types of security threats, and the strategies employed to combat such threats in the region that are influenced by its strategic location and proximity to the United States are discussed. Information on criminal activities came from various government reports, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, news reports, and articles. The overall evidence suggests that criminal activities in the region undercut the law and weaken socio-economic and political stability that subsequently threaten Caribbean …

Pathways To Social Mobility: Examining Trades As A Career Path For Formerly Incarcerated Individuals, June Jenkins Jul 2024

Pathways To Social Mobility: Examining Trades As A Career Path For Formerly Incarcerated Individuals, June Jenkins

Dissertations and Theses

Obtaining stable, paid employment is crucial for successful reentry into the community after incarceration, however, formerly incarcerated individuals face extensive barriers when entering the workforce. Trades may present a uniquely attainable career path for this population due to relatively low barriers to entry. To date, there is a lack of research investigating experience-based perspectives on the viability of trades training programs and trades careers in facilitating prisoner reentry. This study employs semi-structured qualitative interviews to investigate perspectives on trades as a career path for formerly incarcerated individuals as well as barriers to accessing and attending trades training programs. Interviewees include …

Considering What Counts: The Fall And Rise Of Maternal Mortality Rates, Joel Best, Keith R. Johnson Jul 2024

Considering What Counts: The Fall And Rise Of Maternal Mortality Rates, Joel Best, Keith R. Johnson

Numeracy

Twentieth-century medical advances reduced the rate of maternal mortality by more than 99 percent. Yet recently we hear that there has been a substantial increase in the maternal mortality rate. This increase has been caused by contemporary researchers adopting much broader definitions for what counts as cases of maternal mortality. This example illustrations the importance of definitions in shaping statistics.

A Quantitative Study On Restorative Justice Programs And Socioeconomic Status On Gun Violence Prevention In Urban Schools, Debra Kaye Long Jul 2024

A Quantitative Study On Restorative Justice Programs And Socioeconomic Status On Gun Violence Prevention In Urban Schools, Debra Kaye Long

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

A gun violence epidemic had been a topic of conversation in America's schools in the form of mass shootings, homicides, nonfatal attacks, accidental discharges, and weapon suicides. The significance of this issue lies in its effects on student safety, well-being, and educational outcomes. A logistic regression model was used to assess the impact of free or reduced-price lunch (SES) and the adoption of restorative justice practices on the likelihood of firearm incidents in schools. Using social learning theory and trauma-informed care, this quantitative study used surveys from 7,290 individuals to analyze these correlations. The findings revealed significant reductions in gun-related …

Singapore Convention: Should Indonesia Ratify It?, Ahmad Rifa'i, Dimas Ramadhansyah

Indonesian Journal of International Law

As cross-border trading develops, there is an increasing need for an effective dispute resolution system to solve disputes on business transactions. Mediation is a well-established method of efficient alternative dispute resolution that was recently internationally recognized under a specific treaty. The United Nations General Assembly took a resolution to adopt the United Nations Convention on International Settlement Resulting from Mediation (“Singapore Convention”). The Indonesian government has tried to boost foreign investment, but such efforts have been delayed due to a legal enforcement issue, which requires a legal reform to provide certainty for investors by providing a seamless and internationally recognized …

“Ain’T Nuthin Wrong With Being A Trojan Man”: Discourse On Safe-Sex In Rap Music, 1985-1995, Christopher D. Rounds, Kareem R. Muhammad Jul 2024

“Ain’T Nuthin Wrong With Being A Trojan Man”: Discourse On Safe-Sex In Rap Music, 1985-1995, Christopher D. Rounds, Kareem R. Muhammad

Journal of Hip Hop Studies

This essay methodically tracks references to safe-sex in rap music and analyzes their implications. Reviewing over 3,000 songs from 1985 to 1995, the authors found that the tone and messages of these references differed substantially. While many artists celebrated risky and indiscriminate sexual behavior– their work marred by a misogny and homophobia that often stigmatized persons living with sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)– many other artists portrayed safe-sex in a positive light, either as a responsible approach to sexual behavior, or as a pragmatic tool of urban survival. These songs normalized the use of condoms, and educated listeners by raising awareness …

Through The Digital Lens: Examining Beliefs About Online Child Sexual Abuse, Kendhyl Delacour Jul 2024

Through The Digital Lens: Examining Beliefs About Online Child Sexual Abuse, Kendhyl Delacour

Student Theses

Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a global societal problem. Advances in technology and widespread Internet access have shifted much of the focus and prevention policies toward online CSA (OCSA). Initially, internet crimes against children were seen as “stranger danger” offenses, where the perpetrator was unknown to the victim. However, recent studies show that online sex offenses are mostly committed by individuals known to the victim. While existing literature has explored how the “stranger danger myth” shapes public perceptions about in-person offenders, little is known about public beliefs regarding OCSA within the context of the stranger danger myth. This study aimed …

An Occupational Perspective On Collegiate Athlete Mental Health, Katelyn D. Cardwell

Graduate Student Scholarship

College can impact mental health for all students, especially those involved in a college sport. Sports require significant time dedication that decreases time available for students to be involved in other activities such as academics or leisure which can lead to increased stress. This study focuses on investigating the impact level of competition and location of school may have on student athletes’ mental health in the state of West Virginia. A mixed methods self-report survey with a total of 75 questions was administered online via Qualtrics software. Quantitative data was analyzed using Stats IQ feature on Qualtrics and qualitative data …

Law, Language, And Authority: The Algorithmic Turn, Amanda Turnbull Jul 2024

Law, Language, And Authority: The Algorithmic Turn, Amanda Turnbull

PhD Dissertations

Law is formed by language and law utilizes language. Law is also like language in that it consists of social rules that aid in the structuring of society. From the time that we first put language into writing, we have been invested in the technologizing of language. There is a clear trajectory of our interest in having machines do things with language that we would otherwise do ourselves. This dissertation investigates how law’s relationship with language changes with the use of algorithmically driven technologies, and correspondingly, the consequences for the changing nature of authority since the use of language in …

Latinos' Intimate Partner Violence, Abuse, And Interventions: Developing A Latcrit Analysis And Critique, Adrian Luis Manriquez, Eric S. Mankowski Jul 2024

Latinos' Intimate Partner Violence, Abuse, And Interventions: Developing A Latcrit Analysis And Critique, Adrian Luis Manriquez, Eric S. Mankowski

Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The paper utilizes LatCrit and critical psychology perspectives in order to review and critique the literature on Latinos' intimate partner violence and abuse and intervention programs. LatCrit theories are described and reviewed, and then applied to the literature on IPV predictors among Latinos. The review demonstrates that the research literature on the predictors, correlates, and antecedents of Latino males' IPV behaviors focuses largely on the individual level of analysis, and consequently suffers from three main limitations: use of deficit models in research; decontextualized assessment and evaluations of IPV; neglect of higher levels of analysis influencing IPV in Latinx communities. Implications …

Exploring Associations Among Identity, Cognitive Flexibility, Intersectional Awareness, And Empathy, Brianna Heuser Jul 2024

Exploring Associations Among Identity, Cognitive Flexibility, Intersectional Awareness, And Empathy, Brianna Heuser

ETD Collection

Growing research has supported the need to incorporate an intersectional perspective in psychology, both in terms of research and clinical practice. The current investigation aimed to expand on current literature and used an intersectional approach to understanding empathy, specifically focusing on self-identification with stigmatized identities, intersectional awareness, and cognitive flexibility. Although prior research has investigated these variables individually, the current study examined the factors simultaneously and proposed a serial mediation model to explain the relationship between the variables. In particular, the serial mediation model suggested the association between the number of stigmatized identities an individual identifies with and their level …

Criminality & Imprisonment Policy Lessons From Across The Pond: Comparing Europe And The United States, Jonathan Link Jul 2024

Criminality & Imprisonment Policy Lessons From Across The Pond: Comparing Europe And The United States, Jonathan Link

Florida Journal of International Law

In the wake of the death of George Floyd and the national and international outcry for racial justice that followed, it seems inevitable that criminal justice reform in America is on the horizon. U.S. President Joe Biden has recognized that there “absolutely” is systemic racism in law enforcement.1 He went on to argue that the U.S. prison system should “turn into a rehabilitation system, not . . . just punishment.” In these interview statements and various other campaign speeches, Presidential debates, and Presidential press conferences since, the President has made clear that the way that the U.S. punishes crime needs …

The United States As An Essential Forum For Litigating And Chronicling The Genocide In Rwanda, Matthew C. Kane Jul 2024

The United States As An Essential Forum For Litigating And Chronicling The Genocide In Rwanda, Matthew C. Kane

Florida Journal of International Law

Over several months in 1994, hell descended on Rwanda. The country and its people experienced unfathomable tragedy, the likes of which the rest of the world simply cannot comprehend. Since the Rwandese Patriotic Front (RPF) seized power from the architects of the genocide, the country has made significant steps in terms of nation building. Rwanda has experienced tremendous economic growth and is widely considered to have one of the lowest levels of official corruption on the continent. The people themselves are different—perhaps most fundamentally, the majority of the current population had not yet been born when death became routine. Yet …

All Stalk And No Action: A Proposal For Arkansas Gps Stalking Legislation, Erin Wadley Jul 2024

All Stalk And No Action: A Proposal For Arkansas Gps Stalking Legislation, Erin Wadley

Arkansas Law Notes

The expanding availability of GPS and internet of things (IoT) devices has equipped abusers with more tools to intensify and broaden the scope of domestic abuse tactics, “threatening the progress advocates have made in the past thirty years and creating novel dangers for survivors.” These devices “allow abusers to overcome geographic and spatial boundaries that would have otherwise prevented them from monitoring, controlling, harassing, and threatening survivors.” Thus, this Comment strongly urges the Arkansas State Legislature to enact a law to protect victims, provide justice, and preventatively deter the tracking of private citizens through GPS tracking while being broad enough …

Toward Queer Potentialities In Child And Youth Care, Bobbi Ali Zaman, Ben Anderson-Nathe

Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Arguably, from the invention of adolescence at the beginning of the 20th century, developmental theory has served as the foundation of disciplinary study and professional practice with children and youth across the global West. Despite their founders’ assertions that development is culturally constructed, in educational and youth work practice contexts stage-based trajectories of normative human growth are largely erroneously accepted as ahistorical, apolitical, naturally occurring, and universally applicable. This paper presents critiques of developmentalism from historical, reconceptualist, and queer perspectives, calling into question the underlying principles of normalcy and abnormality that run through the developmental project. We pay particular attention …

Mental Health In South Georgia: Another Area Of Disadvantage For An Underserved Region, But Pandemic-Related Policy Changes Suggest Pathways Forward, Shelly Yankovskyy, Anne Price

Proceedings of the annual meeting of the Southern Anthropological Society

Mental health is a contemporary issue of key concern among academics and policymakers, especially due to the exacerbation of mental health issues with the COVID-19 pandemic. Increases in mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, suicide, opioid overdose, and youth depression are the subject of research and governmental-allocated grant funding and new policies have been put in place at multiple institutional levels. We utilize a political economy framework to understand the incidence of mental health disorders and explore how new programs and policies have been implemented in Georgia to address and support mental health at various institutional levels, such as …
