Forensic Scholars Today
The purpose of this paper is to review art therapy (AT) and its effectiveness as a treatment approach for individuals diagnosed with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). In 2008, Gerteisen explored the use of AT as a viable intervention model for individuals affected by FASD. This paper identifies applicable therapeutic AT approaches identified by Gerteisen’s research. The literature review offers a comprehensive overview of FASD and comorbid diagnoses. Finally, this paper presents future research considerations for the use of AT as a successful treatment modality for FASD in all settings.

H.H. Holmes: One Of America's First Recorded Serial Murderers, Jerrod Brown, Eric Hickey, Blake Harris
Forensic Scholars Today
Herman Webster Mudgett, aka Dr. Henry Howard Holmes, is one of America’s first noted serial murderers. He killed at least 27 women during the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition (e.g., World’s Fair) in Chicago. In addition to murder, Holmes enjoyed performing extreme forms of torture and mutilation on those he lured into traps. He is perhaps best known for what would later be dubbed the Murder Castle, a two-story maze designed by Holmes with numerous trap doors, hidden passages, and torture chambers. Many researchers have been fascinated with peering behind the façade that Dr. Holmes contrived and looking into his formative …

Forensic Scholars Today
The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of forensic mental health services for the criminal justice practitioner who may not be fully familiar with the roles and responsibilities of mental health practitioners within the criminal justice system as well as the resources they provide. Given the influential role of mental health in the rehabilitation process, specifically as it pertains to the process of reentry for incarcerated individuals, mental health practitioners can serve as a valuable resource to those within criminal justice populations as well as other professionals within relatable fields.

The Status Of Women Leaders In Government – Utah Counties: A 2024 Update, April Townsend, Susan R. Madsen
The Status Of Women Leaders In Government – Utah Counties: A 2024 Update, April Townsend, Susan R. Madsen
Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications
Organizations increasingly thrive when both men and women hold leadership roles and work together. This is true not only in Utah’s businesses, but also its government organizations, such as state legislatures, city councils, and state and local bureaucracies.1
American democracy is based on the concept of representation.2 Governments mirror this idea by encouraging agencies to employ a workforce that shares the demographic characteristics of the community it serves.3 In fact, the presence of a diverse public workforce “implies equal access to government positions promoting empowerment and connection with government in diverse communities, [and] can also signal the …

Regulating Algorithmic Harms, Sylvia Lu
Regulating Algorithmic Harms, Sylvia Lu
Law & Economics Working Papers
In recent years, the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) innovations has led to a rise in algorithmic harms—harms emerging from AI operations that pose significant threats to civil rights and democratic values in today’s technological landscape. A facial recognition system for improving criminal detection wrongly collected sensitive personal data and flagged racial minorities as shoplifters. A risk-prediction algorithm adopted to identify patients denied medical treatment to Black individuals with poor health conditions. A social media algorithm intended to boost social engagement exacerbated addictive behavior and mental illness in teenagers. These harms are becoming increasingly ubiquitous yet often manifest in …

Educational Neglect In Utah: How The State Allows Children To Fall Through The Cracks, Celeste D. Barker
Transforming Communities
Chronic absenteeism due to educational neglect is a prevalent social need in the state of Utah. Thousands of children in Utah are falling through the cracks of the system that is designed for their success and it is imperative that Utah’s State Legislature examines this dilemma more closely. It is recommended that the legislature examine real cases of educational neglect and realize how current decision making and policy framework is impacting the future success of Utah’s children. Modifications include extending the scope of intervention to secondary school-aged children, creating standardized attendance infraction letters for every school district in Utah, reevaluating …

Mattress Money: How Civil Forfeiture Leaves Taxpayers With Few Options, Aubrey Manculich
The Business, Entrepreneurship & Tax Law Review
Civil forfeiture is a legal practice that allows law enforcement agencies to seize property without a criminal conviction, or even charges. This article examines the tax consequences of civil asset forfeiture, particularly the near-impossibility of individuals or businesses to claim a deduction for forfeited property. By analyzing the treatment of seized and forfeited property by the Internal Revenue Code and related I.R.S. regulations and publications, this study exposes critical gaps in the current system that prevent taxpayers from recognizing losses from civil forfeiture. The article further explores the interaction of tax law and civil forfeiture proceedings, demonstrating how innocent property …
