Evaluating The Texas Risk Assessment System (Tras) Predictors Of Revocation And Early Release In Adult Felony Probation, Sarah A. El Sayed, Carley R. Shelton, Michael F. Teneyck Sep 2024

Evaluating The Texas Risk Assessment System (Tras) Predictors Of Revocation And Early Release In Adult Felony Probation, Sarah A. El Sayed, Carley R. Shelton, Michael F. Teneyck

Open Initiatives Grant Funded Publications-Archive

Although much is known about recidivism risk, less is known about factors predicting early release. The current study analyses a sample of 2,070 adult felony probation clients to see if offense characteristics, domains from the Texas Risk Assessment System (TRAS), and demographic variables impact both revocation and successful early release. Results revealed that predictors of early release mirrored those of revocation with one exception—race. Specifically, Black clients were 27% less likely to be granted early release. The findings highlight the TRAS is an effective tool to help mitigate bias for revocation of probation but not for granting early release.

The Nexus Of Resistance And Neoliberalism In Social Work And Social Welfare: A Scoping Review, Kevin Cherry, Sandra Leotti Sep 2024

The Nexus Of Resistance And Neoliberalism In Social Work And Social Welfare: A Scoping Review, Kevin Cherry, Sandra Leotti

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study intervenes in a growing scholarly dialogue about neoliberalism in social work and social welfare by addressing the undertheorized concept of resistance. We conduct a scoping review of 54 articles published from 2008–2023 to answer two questions: how is resistance discussed in relation to neoliberalism, and what are the practice elements of resistance? Findings highlight resistance as a diverse phenomenon enacted in relation to context-specific manifestations of neoliberalism. A range of actors engage in resistance, including individual practitioners, social service organizations and collective action entities, among others. Resistance occurs across all scales of practice and takes many forms, from …

Examining Sense Of Belonging In Higher Education Leadership For Black Women With Intersecting Marginalized Identities, Dominique A. White Sep 2024

Examining Sense Of Belonging In Higher Education Leadership For Black Women With Intersecting Marginalized Identities, Dominique A. White

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Black women juggling marginalized minority identities in executive leadership at public four-year universities contend with stigmas associated with race and gender, contributing to a decreased sense of belonging. Significant research has been done about the journeys of Black or African American women as they seek executive roles in higher education. However, minimal research explores Black women's sense of belonging once executive leadership status is reached. Understanding their sense of belonging could fill a gap in practice regarding Black women’s scarcity occupying executive university leadership. This qualitative study examined the perceptions of a sense of belonging for Black women juggling intersecting …

The Association Between Environmental Factors And Substance Use Outcomes Among A Vulnerable Veteran Population, Leah Nixon Bryan Sep 2024

The Association Between Environmental Factors And Substance Use Outcomes Among A Vulnerable Veteran Population, Leah Nixon Bryan

All ETDs from UAB

Background. Illicit substance use among veterans is a complex and multifaceted issue. As individuals who have served in the armed forces return to civilian life, they may face a range of challenges, including mental health issues, physical injuries, and difficulties readjusting to societal norms. Unfortunately, for some veterans, these challenges can contribute to the allure of illicit substances as a coping mechanism. The intersection of the unique stressors associated with military service creates a population with an increased vulnerability to select health and psychosocial issues and susceptible to substance misuse (Tsai & Rosenheck, 2015). In addition to military experiences, environmental …

Measuring Resilience In Black Families, Destiny Shanell Kelly Sep 2024

Measuring Resilience In Black Families, Destiny Shanell Kelly

All ETDs from UAB

Black families play a unique role in navigating risk and adversity, operating as a source of various protective factors to combat challenges faced. Given the historical and current role that racism plays in the everyday lives of Black individuals, culturally specific protective mechanisms have manifested as a defense for these encounters. Many of these protective factors are instilled at the family level, helping all family members maintain healthy functioning or be resilient, such as social support, ethnic-racial socialization, and racial identity. However, current measures of family resilience do not incorporate these culturally relevant protective mechanisms into the measures, preventing Black …

Adolescents' Life Stressors And Mental Health Trajectories In Young Adulthood: Findings From The Nlsy97 Cohort, Monir Hossain Sep 2024

Adolescents' Life Stressors And Mental Health Trajectories In Young Adulthood: Findings From The Nlsy97 Cohort, Monir Hossain

All ETDs from UAB

Prior research demonstrates that early life adversity lowers mental health in young adulthood; however, there has been less attention to adversity occurring in adolescence and how this affects mental health over time. Further, little research has considered how the type of adversity (here called Adolescent Life Stressors (ALSs)) may affect mental health over time differently. The life course perspective directs attention to how adversity in adolescence and the type of ALS experienced may be especially consequential to the extent that it disrupts normative adult role attainment—education, employment, marriage, and parenthood—in the transition to adulthood. To address these gaps, I use …

Design Thinking Strategies For Complex Situations: Covid-19 In Western Australia And New South Wales, Terence Love, Paul Cozens, Trudi Cooper Sep 2024

Design Thinking Strategies For Complex Situations: Covid-19 In Western Australia And New South Wales, Terence Love, Paul Cozens, Trudi Cooper

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

This paper outlines an argument for changing the foundation of design thinking practices to include causal feedback loops instead of primarily predicting futures using linear causal relations. The paper suggests for most real-world design situations the traditional linear causal perspective is insufficient and leads to lower value design outcomes. The authors propose instead designers address real-world complex design situations via design methods that include feedback loops, which require different design methods and tools. The discussion in the paper follows the understanding of systems researchers. The authors provide an example of the significant differences in outcomes using a comparative case study …

Indiana Time Law And Its Detrimental Effects, John F. Gaski Sep 2024

Indiana Time Law And Its Detrimental Effects, John F. Gaski

The Geographical Bulletin

The most enduring and contentious public policy issue in Indiana history may be the seemingly prosaic matter of “what time is it?” This analysis focuses on the implications of the State of Indiana’s recent change to daylight-saving time in conjunction with near-statewide Eastern time . I argue that the economic and commercial basis for the new temporal regimen is erroneous, and that its educational and humane implications are substantial . Finally, I outline a proposal for resolution of these issues . Although the concentration here is the Indiana situation, lessons are generalizable to other states, counties, and regions facing similar …

The Transportation Disadvantaged And The Right To The City In Syracuse, New York, Kafui Ablode Attoh

The Geographical Bulletin

Drawing on the idea of the right to the city, this paper focuses on the challenges facing the transportation disadvantaged in Syracuse, N .Y . This paper will begin by focusing on two programs aimed at transporting welfare recipients to work: the Rides for Work and Wheels for Work programs . This paper will then examine transit activism in Syracuse as it emerged, first in debates over wheelchair lifts on public buses in the 1980s and second as it has emerged in more contemporary organizing efforts aimed at promoting transit awareness . Through these four case studies, this paper argues …
