Submit Yourself: Religious Beliefs, Gender Roles, Self-Control, And Alcohol Use’S Influence On Attitudes Toward Intimate Partner Violence, Carina J. Pawlak
Submit Yourself: Religious Beliefs, Gender Roles, Self-Control, And Alcohol Use’S Influence On Attitudes Toward Intimate Partner Violence, Carina J. Pawlak
Honors Program Theses and Research Projects
Religious beliefs bear a great significance in many individuals’ lives, as they shape our personal belief systems and affect our relationships with others. Limited research has explored the relationship between religion and intimate partner violence (IPV), an increasingly prevalent issue that persists in our society. The traditional values, such as male gender roles associated with patriarchal societies and traditional religious beliefs, may magnify the prevalence of IPV perpetration. Other variables that may be associated with positive attitudes toward IPV include self-control, alcohol intake, and belief in divine control. This analysis used preliminary data from the Crime, Health, and Intimate Partner …

Restorative Pedagogy To Build Community In The Classroom: Autoethnographic Reflections From Faculty, Sheila M. Mcmahon, Zahra Ahmed, Michelle Bemiller
International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
Restorative justice (RJ) is a philosophy and set of practices that center harms and needs. Within a classroom setting, an RJ pedagogical approach invites a process of shared learning that attends to critical issues of equity, power, and voice. Utilizing an autoethnographic approach, this manuscript includes critical reflections from three faculty members from diverse disciplines and positionalities about the use of RJ approaches to teaching in our respective classrooms. This paper includes discussion about the intersection of RJ with critical pedagogy, power differentials, and pragmatic issues of classroom structure learning design.

Hybrid Teaching And Learning In Higher Education: An Appreciative Inquiry, Lori E. Kniffin, Justin Greenleaf
International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
This study is an appreciative inquiry (Cooperrider & Srivasta, 1987; Priest et al., 2013) into hybrid courses offered in Fall 2020, which included a combination of face-to-face and online elements. The courses in this study were part of an academic leadership studies program at Fort Hays State University and were taught in the hybrid format for the first time in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of the study was to identify the assets of the hybrid modality of instruction in order to retain and implement them post-pandemic in any modality. Our findings include three themes: (1) perceptions of …
Socio-Economic Justice As Solution To The Challenge Of Insecurity In Nigeria, Abdulkadir Salaudeen, Nurudeen Sola Ibrahim
Socio-Economic Justice As Solution To The Challenge Of Insecurity In Nigeria, Abdulkadir Salaudeen, Nurudeen Sola Ibrahim
Future Journal of Social Science
Insecurity in Nigeria has, no doubt, reached its crescendo. The affluent and the wretched, for the first time since the transition to democracy in 1999, have something terrible in common—threat to life and property. No one is safe. This study investigates the causes of general insecurity in Nigeria which reduce it to a terrorized country and one of the most dangerous place to live in the world. It examines how Nigeria got into this precarious situation of unprecedented insecurity with a view to proffering solutions. The study utilizes secondary source of data and argues from the perspective of the Social …

Analyzing Trauma-Informed Courtrooms In A Midwestern State Of The United States: Comparisons Between Rural And Urban Jurisdictions, April Terry, Ziwei Qi
Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
This study investigates the implementation of trauma-informed practices in various court settings, including juvenile and adult courtrooms, as well as specialized cases in areas such as family courts, domestic reconciliation, protection orders, and child in need of care (CINC) cases, within a single Midwestern state in the United States. The study targeted one rural and one urban judicial district. The authors sought to assess if, and how these practices are utilized to create an environment and workplace that fosters a needs-based, survivor-centered, resilience-building courtroom. Drawing from a holistic perspective on trauma and survivor-centered practices, this study utilized a mixed-methods approach, …

The Impact Of State Laws On Officer-Involved Deaths (Oids), Morgan Steele, Ziwei Qi
Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
While the public debates whether law enforcement has a problem with mis- or over-using force, the field lacks critical information concerning how often officers use force when interacting with citizens. Moreover, researchers have not examined how differences in how states restrict officers’ ability to use force affect the frequency of force used. Consequently, the various reforms proposed have little evidence supporting them. Using data from Mapping Police Violence combined with census data, we examined the impact of the incorporation of U.S. Supreme Court jurisprudence and the overall restrictiveness each state placed on law enforcement’s ability to use force when making …
Delinquency And Inadvertent Neglect As Byproducts Of Work-Addicted Parents, Shelley Sasser
Delinquency And Inadvertent Neglect As Byproducts Of Work-Addicted Parents, Shelley Sasser
Bridges: A Journal of Student Research
Over the past decade, discussions of work addiction throughout academic literature have increased substantially. However, the relationship between childhood outcomes and parental work addiction has yet to be explored. In this study, I set out to identify functions of parent-child relationships and comparisons of situational outcomes stemming from work addiction in relation to social determinants such as income, ethnicity, and gender, along with resulting stratification. The degree to which children benefit from features of lifestyles typically associated with high household incomes, such as financial security, health care benefits, access to educational resources, and neighborhood socioeconomic advantage, wherein parental work-addiction might …
“True Crime Effect”: The Influence Of True Crime Media On Jurors’ Perceptions Of Innocence In A Criminal Trial, Abigail Curran
“True Crime Effect”: The Influence Of True Crime Media On Jurors’ Perceptions Of Innocence In A Criminal Trial, Abigail Curran
Honors College Theses
In the mid-2000s, the popular TV show CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and its portrayal of forensic evidence was blamed for a so-called “CSI effect” - hypothesizing that jurors had greater expectations of the use of forensic evidence than was realistic. While CSI has fallen in popularity - ultimately ending its 15-year run on television in 2015 - stories of crime and criminality remain popular. The most recent iteration of this fascination can be seen in the rise in popularity of true crime documentaries and podcasts. This study aims to investigate the existence of a “true crime effect” in which all …

Immigration, Sanctuary Counties, And Crime: A Safety Net For Vulnerable Populations?, Carson Duca
Immigration, Sanctuary Counties, And Crime: A Safety Net For Vulnerable Populations?, Carson Duca
Sociology and Criminology Undergraduate Honors Theses
The literature for the relationship between immigration and crime has been growing in recent decades, but the research on how immigration sanctuary policies are associated with crime is relatively underdeveloped. There is much theory that describes how immigration sanctuary policies could make the police more effective and efficient due to increased correspondence levels, which also has the potential to increase crime reporting rates. The current study advances the extant literature on the relationship between immigration sanctuary policies and crime. To do so, ordinary least squares (OLS) regression techniques are run to analyze how the presence of immigration sanctuary policies along …

New Legal Realism At 20: Rethinking Law In An Era Of Populism And Social Movements, Jeffrey Omari, Pablo Rueda-Saiz, Richard Ashby Wilson
Connecticut Law Review
This Article critically examines the New Legal Realism (NLR) movement on its twentieth anniversary and illuminates its distinctive intellectual contributions. In evaluating NLR’s unique methodological and substantive contributions, we explore the movement's relationship to other interdisciplinary theories and empirical approaches to law. NLR approaches show a commitment to a comparative, crossnational exploration of legal phenomena while allowing for grounded generalizations about the relationship between law and society. NLR approaches embrace a diverse range of methods and emphasize the importance of “looking up, down, and sideways.” Notably, NLR embraces both “top-down” and “bottom-up” methods, providing comprehensive insights into the intricate interactions …
Imperfect Protection Against Perfect Enforcement: When Procedure Is Not Enough, William S. Fallon
Imperfect Protection Against Perfect Enforcement: When Procedure Is Not Enough, William S. Fallon
Connecticut Law Review
Government technology that exclusively detects illegal conduct is per se constitutional. Today, the Fourth Amendment provides no protection—zero—against government technology that identifies illegality without also revealing private, innocent behavior.
Meanwhile, alarmingly, government is rapidly developing—and deploying— technology that bypasses the need to examine private, innocent behavior in its detection of wrongdoing. Government can know there is contraband in your bedroom drawer without the need to rummage through that drawer, your home, or any of your private information and possessions. Government can know there is illegal content on your phone without the need to search through that phone or any of …

A Quantitative Evaluation Of An Innovative Family Treatment Court Program For Families With Co-Occurring Child Maltreatment And Substance Use., Ashley Rose Logsdon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Substance use is linked to out-of-home care in over 40% of child welfare cases. This dissertation evaluated the experience of families with co-occurring child maltreatment and substance use in Family Recovery Court (FRC), an innovative family treatment court involving the judicial system, child welfare system, and behavioral health. Study One used a quasi-experimental propensity score match design, using administrative data and the North Carolina Family Assessment Scale for 68 families. The FRC group experienced better safety (substantiated repeat maltreatment), permanency (reunification), and well-being outcomes. The percentage of the FRC group who achieved reunification (81.2%) was significantly higher than that of …
Understanding Carceral Pathways And Outcomes Of Marginalized Adults Who Use Drugs., Carmen Renee Mitchell
Understanding Carceral Pathways And Outcomes Of Marginalized Adults Who Use Drugs., Carmen Renee Mitchell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is an examination of outcomes among substance users at various stages of the incarceration process divided among five chapters. Chapter One provides an overview of substance use disorder (SUD), incarceration, and wider justice system-involvement, and explores how the political economy of health theoretical framework can be applied to examine how the criminal justice system creates and perpetuates inequality among marginalized people who use substances. Chapter Two examines post-release health outcomes among the population of incarcerated people who use substances using a scoping review and finds that people in reentry with SUD have poorer overall outcomes that without transitional …
A Broken Shield: Ineffective Assistance Of Counsel Claims In Cases Of Racist Defense Attorneys, Sophia Sabet
A Broken Shield: Ineffective Assistance Of Counsel Claims In Cases Of Racist Defense Attorneys, Sophia Sabet
Fordham Law Review
Defense attorneys are not immune to racism, and a defense attorney who holds racist beliefs about their client’s race fundamentally calls into question the representation received. Under the Sixth Amendment, all criminal defendants have the right to the effective assistance of counsel. To prevail on an ineffective assistance of counsel claim, the U.S. Supreme Court held in Strickland v. Washington that a criminal defendant must prove that their counsel’s performance was deficient and that the deficiency prejudiced the defense. The Supreme Court supplemented the Strickland standard in Cuyler v. Sullivan and United States v. Cronic, holding that a conflict …
Understanding The Relationship Between Humble Leadership, Reflecting Dialogue, Psychological Safety And Job Satisfaction: A Study Of Japanese Correctional Officers, Yayoi Kimura
Theses
This study investigates the relationships between humble leadership, reflecting dialogue, psychological safety, and job satisfaction among correctional officers in Japanese correctional institutions. Correctional officers face high levels of stress due to their demanding roles in rehabilitating and managing inmates, yet the impact of organizational factors on their job satisfaction remains underexplored. As Japan undergoes significant changes in its penal system, understanding the factors that contribute to a supportive work environment is crucial. First, this study examines the relationship between psychological safety and job satisfaction among correctional officers. Second, it explores whether facilities that practice reflecting dialogue and humble leadership experience …

Challenging Myths & Addressing Intimate Partner Sexual Violence In Lgbtq+ Relationships, Nora K. Whitten
SPARK Symposium Presentations
Intimate partner violence (IPV), including intimate partner sexual violence (IPSV), is a public health crisis that disproportionately affects members of the LGBTQ+ community. This paper draws upon related, though limited, research to identify the five prevalent myths surrounding IPSV in LGBTQ+ relationships, addressing the following misconceptions: 1) IPSV can only occur in heterosexual relationships, 2) IPSV in LGBTQ+ relationships is not as severe, 3) Women cannot commit acts of sexual violence, 4) The more “masculine” partner is always the perpetrator, and 5) IPSV is a “mutual fight” among partners of the same sex. These myths perpetuate victim-blaming, minimize the severity …
Burnout, Stress And Its Effect On The Use Of Deadly Force, Charles Gutshall
Burnout, Stress And Its Effect On The Use Of Deadly Force, Charles Gutshall
School of Criminal Justice Theses and Dissertations
Police officers encounter significant occupational stressors that contribute to heightened levels of burnout and stress, potentially influencing their critical decision-making during deadly force encounters. This dissertation investigates the relationship between selfreported perceived stress, burnout, and the frequency of deadly force application among officers in southeastern Florida. Drawing on the Professional Quality of Life Scale, the Perceived Stress Scale, and the Restraint in the Use of Deadly Force Scale, survey responses from 202 officers were statistically analyzed using regression and descriptive techniques.
Contrary to initial hypotheses, findings revealed no significant predictive relationship between perceived stress, burnout, and the likelihood of using …
